Posted Breed: Coonhound. A Delcie & Lilly update: If you like hounds, you’ll love the “Houndie Girls”. They have been in our home as fosters since November 2013. While they are around 14 years old, they didn’t ‘get the memo’ that they are senior dogs. They love a good walk, just like their 5 year old foster sister. In fact, Delcie bounces around like a puppy whenever the leash is brought out. They live for their walks and enjoy backyard time, although preferably with a sweater during a winter like the last one! In our home the houndies are the 2nd half to a foursome, and get along well with our two dogs, one senior and one youngster. They aren’t keen on public ‘meet-ups’ at the dog park or HBR events. Like many floppy eared breeds, the girls are plagued by chronic ear issues. Regular cleaning and strategic upkeep seems to maintain their comfort, but the amount of scarring makes for a chronic condition. They are not keen on ear cleaning or nail trimming. The “Houndies” maintain their hounding ways, engaging in the odd sampling of garbage if available and love table scraps, taking advantage of any opportunity. They enjoy engaging in regular ‘choir practice’, howling in unison with foster dad, and make for a great alarm system in the house! The ladies would prefer to lounge on the furniture, but the foster parents encourage dog beds, and the girls oblige. “Hounding Hour” can happen anywhere, they are happiest when with their people, relaxing or walking. These two ladies have personality plus and are truly lovable, Lilly waves with her paw when you come to talk to her, Delcie wags the tip of her tail when spoken (or sung) to. Perhaps you would like a “Hounding Hour” at your house? Delcie and Lilly would be happy to join you.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Mastiff. * ADOPTION PENDING *Hi I'm Khali and If you are into naps I might be just the girl for you! Don't get me wrong everyone enjoys a walk around the neighbourhood and my leash manners are fantastic, but I prefer to leave most of that "exercise" stuff to the younger generation! I really would much rather hang out around the house with my people and am also good with other calm easygoing dogs. I'm not a big fan of the cats they have in my foster family's house (although they keep insisting that they are allowed to be here) I'm pretty sure I'd like to chase them out so if you are for me you probably won't have any of those "felines" in your house! My foster family has given me a nice cushy bed in the living room and another in my bedroom since I have very nice manners and do not even try to get up on the furniture (I think it's too much like work to climb up). If I may make one request I much prefer to have free run in the house or have a room of my own, and get quite upset if locked in a crate...those are for dogs not ladies like me!! The great thing about us "mature" ladies is we do not chew on things like puppies do, I certainly would never mess in the house and I'm more than happy to snooze and take care of the house while you are away at work earning cookie money for me!! Speaking of food I have excellent table manners and have no problem with people being near me when I'm eating, and am happy to do anything you ask to get treats! I do love having company young and old and win the heart of everyone I meet, my foster mom says I am just such a sweet dog she can't imagine how anyone could give me away. Oh and Shhh don't believe what they say I'm not 10...I'm 1, with 9 years of experience :)KHALI IS BEING FOSTERED IN~ Penetanguishene

Posted Breed: English Bulldog. Hi, my name is Rex (aka Big Sexy aka Sexy Rex) and I’m a handsome 6year old English Bulldog rescued from a shelter. I was overweight, butmy foster parents have helped me get to a healthy weight and now I amway more active and love to frolic around – but only when I feel likeit. I've also championed a recovery from surgery for cherry eye and aprolapsed urethra. I don’t really like to play with toys, but I LOVEtreats – any kind of food, to be honest. I love to be around peoplethat love me and am perfectly content lying close by while you’re busydoing things around the house, but as soon as you sit down, I will beright by your side. I also love to sleep and have won the award forloudest snorer in the house. I’m also very independent and am notafraid of being home alone while you’re at work. I’m housetrained andhave never had an accident at my foster parents' house and sleep on mybed with no crate and no issues through the night. I walk very well onmy leash, but occasionally get distracted if I see another dog goingfor a walk nearby. I am pretty strong, so it would be best to have ahuman who can redirect me and/or properly introduce me when I get tooexcited. Although I am an only child, I am good with most dogs as longas I have been properly introduced, but I haven't been cat tested. Iam also good with children as long as proper introductions have beenmade. There have been a few occasions while in foster care that I havestarted biting at people's feet and I don't know why. My fosterparents have been working on narrowing down what triggers thisbehaviour with certain people, but we're still working on it. We'vegotten some advice from the behaviour coordinator at HBR about how wecan fix this, so this will be something that I will need my humans towork on with me. I will need eye drops indefinitely and a little bitof coconut oil or ointment for my dry nose, but I am an absolute angeland don't put up a fight when it's time for my daily dose. My fosterparents say I am quite a catch. I'm a sweet, loyal, low maintenance, easy going, silly stud - what more can you ask for? I'm the perfectguy for anyone who wants some love and has love to give.* Rex is being fostered in Milton *

Posted Breed: Pug / Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed. Hi my name is Rogue. I'm a nine year old Jack Russell x Pug, but you'd never know it! I am a happy go lucky and sweet girl that loves people. I enjoy walks, playing with toys, and cuddling on the couch. You'll often see me with my tongue sticking out.I sleep in a dog bed at night, and I am crate and house trained. After having a HUGE bladder stone removed, my bladder isn't as strong. I try not to make a mess, but sometimes I dribble or pee in my sleep. I have been wearing little diapers and they have been working perfectly! I am now eating urinary s/o food from the vet to avoid more bladder stones.I am good with other dogs and children. I cannot go to a home with cats as I do not like them!I am being fostered near Ottawa right now and hope to meet you soon

Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Pug / Mixed. Hey I'm Cheto: I am a 3 year old, Jack Russell x pugThe awesome people from HBR sprung me from a loud and cold shelter, I was a bit weary of strangers and nervous of other dogs, which is understandable! Since coming into my foster home they tell me I have made AMAZING progress and am learning how to trust and love again . I am getting better every day with commands and love to be rewarded when I listen. I have been getting along with my foster brothers (Boxer and Pug) but they have a lot less energy than me, so if there is another dog in the home they should be Alpha or have the energy to keep up (and put up) with my GO GO GO! I am improving at leash etiquette with every walk, but sweet little me has a TON of energy and needs a home with a good sized fenced yard and an active family (a jogger would be great!!) I still has an occasional accident (whoops) in the house usually if my foster family sleeps in too late on a weekend or are late coming home from work, but it’s understandable as I am only a little guy with limited capacity. I have enjoyed the company of my teenage human brother, but homes with young children should be avoided. I came into care with quite bad separation anxiety (not surprising since my last family dumped me) but after a few short days I settled in and can be found most nights a sleep on my foster Moms lap while she reads a book or watches TV. I am very loving and a sweet guy, love to play with toys, but still learning how to be social with other dogs while on a leash. A note from My foster Mom-This awesome little dude has so much love to give and is ready to find his forever home.* Cheto will not be adopted to homes with Children under the age of 12and will need a well balanced dog in the home if any at all.*EXPERIENCED ACTIVE FAMILY ONLY *Cheto is being fostered in Toronto

Posted Breed: English Bulldog. *ADOPTION PENDING*Hi my name is Sampson I am a handsome 4 year old English Bulldog (if I don't say so myself) I am healthy and active for a Bulldog and love to run and play. I especially love durable squeaky toys and sticks. I take my cues from my foster pack, and if they are active, so am I, but when it is time to sit on the couch and rest, I will snore next to you for hours. I am quite cuddly and I am happiest when I am lying next to you. The past that I've had has been a little shaky, which makes me nervous when I'm left alone, but we're working on that. Foster mom stays home with me and I really enjoy that. I am a very emotional boy, and it takes me about 10 minutes to settle down. I may cry a little, but after that, I settle down and I am very happy as long as I can see you I love going on car rides and I love to ride in the front seat. However, I have learned very quickly how to share the backseat with my foster brother, who is a yellow lab. I am a very smart young boy, and I will do almost anything for a liver treat. I sometimes get distracted when I am playing with other dogs. I am getting better at walking, and my new harness is great. I have learned how to step into it all by myself. I like an adult person to walk me as I am very strong! I am a great house-dog, and I have never had any accidents. I know how to ask to go to the bathroom, which I learned within 12 hours of being in my foster home! I learned the routine from my foster brother, who I have no problem with being the leader of the pack. If you want to vacuum, I will have to be outside, as I really hate the noise. You won't have to vacuum much though, as I don't shed a lot. If you want to use the hose, I will have to be inside, as I have had bad experiences with being sprayed in the past. I will make it up to you by keeping the backyard squirrel-free! If you have doggie neighbours, you will have to have very secure fences as I can slip underneath and will escape to go have some fun. Foster family doesn't have kids, but when I walk near the school, I love to sit nicely and give them kisses. I also ignore cats, so I would have no problem living with them. I am a friendly, happy boy who has a great temperament. I will learn the rules of your house quickly, and I would be a great dog for a family who would love to take me everywhere!* SAMPSON IS BEING FOSTERED IN GUELPH** Breed experience is a must!
