Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed. Handsome Jasper has sure been through a lot! He was part of a hoarding situation where an owner had over 40 other dogs in their backyard, all neglected and scared. Jasper is learning to trust people and is still a bit scared of his new surroundings. Jasper is a very sweet boy and really wants to be with people, he just needs to learn that people are good and want to do what's best for him. Jasper thrives with being around other dogs and he would likely do best in a home where there are dogs to help show him that people and new situations are ok. He looks to other dogs to see what he should do next and we're certain the more time he spends with other dogs, the sooner he'll gain confidence and feel relaxed and happy. Jasper is a dog that requires some patience to help get him to where he needs to be and we are happy that we get to be a part of his journey on his way to a new life and home. A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Nani

      Breed: Miniature Pinscher
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Newhall, CA
Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher (short coat). Nani means "beautiful" in Hawaiian and when we first laid eyes on her, that's exactly what we thought of her! Nani was one of the dogs who didn't find a home at the end of a big adoption event. When we came across her, she was laying down with her head propped up to the kennel wall fast asleep. She is a very sweet girl, but being what we believe to be a purebred miniature pinscher, she is also curious and independent which is typical of the breed. It is believed that when Nani was young, she may have had a premature botched spay, which has caused her some issues with her urinary tract. She will need to be on continued medication and may require vet visits periodically. Per Nani's current owners, "She is crate trained and stays indoors in her kennel overnight for sleeping and whenever the owners aren't home. Nani is quiet and easy to get along with, she takes her medicine gently and for the most part has a house cat personality. She is a calm and lovey girl who loves attention and snuggles, and gets along perfectly with everyone in the family, including our children." We have faith that someone special out there is willing to adopt a dog with a medical history and bring this lovable girl into their life. Nani has been through a lot of changes in her life and now faces finding yet another forever family who can commit to loving and caring for her for the rest of her life. Please give this girl a chance and adopt her today!

Posted Breed: Doberman Pinscher (short coat). Looking for a head-turning-kind-of-handsome companion to share a lifetime of memories with? Then you have found just the dog in our resident stud-pup: Ferdinand. It's a typical public misconception that purebred dogs are almost impossible to find in the world of animal rescue, but it's actually far from the reality. Purebreds are a common sight at shelters, and are sometimes even more at risk for euthanasia than their "mutt" counterparts. Such seems to be the story of Ferdinand. We first met Ferdie at the end of a long row of kennels in one of the highest-kill shelters in the area. While the other dogs around him were going into overdrive with barks and snarls, Ferdinand caught the attention of our staff with the way he approached the kennel gate with grace, calm and composure. We took Ferdinand out into the small, cramped meet-and-greet area, and he instantly came up to our staff members and leaned into their legs, begging for ear scratches and wiggling his stumpy tail in excitement. We knew a smart dog like Ferdinand would find a fantastic forever home in a heartbeat! Since coming to the haven of New Leash On Life's thirteen-acre Ranch property, Ferdinand has blossomed into a smart, loyal, loving guy who wants nothing more than to stretch out in the sun or play in the dog park. He has earned the affectionate nickname of "Velcro" among the staff and volunteers -- he still wraps around our legs, much like a curious but shy toddler experiencing the world around him for the first time. Ferdinand's former family obviously spent no time whatsoever trying to socialize or train him -- we suspect he may have even the victim of severe abusive behavior. He would benefit greatly from an intense obedience course, and definitely needs to get out and about in the world and try new experiences. We have no doubt that with a little effort, Ferdinand will make the finest of dogs -- full of enough love and loyalty to last for years to come!

      Meatball

      Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Newhall, CA
Posted Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). We love our little man: Meatball! Rescued from a high-kill City shelter after being returned THREE times for having "too much energy," things looked pretty grim for this stumpy stud-muffin. His cropped ears and pearly white teeth didn't help matters, despite his ache to love, snuggle and kiss anyone who would give him the chance. Luckily, our Rescue Team got to Meatball just in time -- we knew our Trainers and Volunteers would have no problem showing Meatball the correct way to a forever home, and were happy to rescue him from an undeserved fate to rehabilitate a dog who clearly had much to offer but had never had any semblance of discipline in his life. After a little TLC, Meatball couldn't wait to get started with his next activity: meeting everyone at the Ranch, and making new friends! We proudly parade this adorable kiss-machine around to anyone who will take notice... he is an amazing dog, and he promises to do his very best to keep you happy and smiling for the rest of your days if you give him the opportunity! Due to his strength and energy levels, it is recommended that Meatball be in a home with older children who he can't accidentally knock over while playing. He seems to get along with most other dogs, but definitely thrives when the other dog is calm and has obedience manners. Cats and small critter households probably won't work for this curious guy. Meatball will definitely need a daily outlet for his energy - such as walks or dog park adventures, maybe even frolicking on the shallow step of a pool! He does well on a leash and will only continue to improve, provided he isn't given the opportunity to pull with a harness or flat collar while out exploring. Meatball is a genuinely happy dude, full of pep and personality. He enjoys long walks, lazy days at the park, endless amounts of tug-of-war, and cuddles after it's all said and done! He is always down to play and explore, so if you have an active life and are looking for a handsome guy to take along for the ride, Meatball is your man!

Beautiful Bessie is SO happy to be out of the shelter! She waited for nearly a month without any interest, when it just so happened that a networking team who was furiously trying to get this girl some attention reached out to New Leash On Life to try and save her life! After meeting Bessie in person, we couldn't believe this lovely girl wasn't snatched up in a second! The shelter is often a frightening place for dogs - with lots of loud noises and smells, constant barking, and hardly any activity for dogs cooped up in small kennels all day long, Bessie just wasn't happy there and appeared very timid at first. But when we went to pet her, she leaned into our hands, allowing us to hold and comfort her. She was filthy, miserable, and had almost given up hope of ever finding love again - we couldn't WAIT to get her out of that environment! Bessie would do best with a person or family that is experienced with the Mastiff breed, and would thrive in a quiet, low-key household with few people coming and going. Whatever may have happened to Bessie in her past life has made her distrustful of males and will need time to bond with any man she may be living with. Our trainer is happy to help out in any way she can to ensure Bessie and her new family are a match made in Heaven! If you feel you are the right match for her, please submit an adoption application for Bessie today!

She loves everyone she meets and will instantly use her charm and good looks to get hugs and kisses and belly rubs from them. She is very patient and mellow, so has no problem to relax while being home while mom or dad is at work and will even entertain herself with her bones and toys, but she also loves to accompany people on car rides and field trips.
