Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Sprinkles is an adorable 6-year-old Australian Cattle Dog/Terrier mix who weighs right around 60 pounds. Sweet, bashful Sprinkles was at our shelter years ago and unfortunately recently returned because his owners could no longer care for him. He is not thrilled to be back in the noisy kennel, so we try to give him extra TLC in the quiet training hall. There, he will do all of his commands for treats, and he's very obedient. He is wary of his surroundings here at first but it's so cute when he comes out of his shell and plays and prances around with his favorite Kong toy. Outside Sprinkles walks very nicely and he is most definitely house broken from his years living in a home. Sprinkles would do best in a home with no small kids because he does not like a lot of noise and commotion. He would be a great dog to be a couch potato with on these cold winter evenings! Please come meet him today!

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Sonic

      Breed: Greyhound-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Northbrook, IL
Posted Breed: Greyhound / Mixed. Sonic is a beautiful 6-year-old, 60-pound Lurcher who has been waiting for his forever home since July! He is just as beautiful inside as he is outside! Sonic was saved by a Lurcher rescue group in Ohio, and brought to Heartland. Lurchers are often bred and kept in terrible conditions, and used to race and hunt. Sonic may not have had the easiest life but he is a happy, relaxed boy! He is one of the dogs we love to take to adoption events because he is so gentle and easy-going! Sonic loves nothing more than a game of fetch followed by a long nap! Sonic is great to walk on a leash; he is so light and graceful, and would make a great running partner. Because Sonic loves his toys so much we don't think he would do well sharing them in a home with another dog. If you are looking for a wonderful new family member, come fall in love with Sonic!

      Estee

      Breed: Dalmatian-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Northbrook, IL
Posted Breed: Dalmatian / Mixed. Doesn't our Estee girl have the most beautiful light brown eyes?! They almost glow! But Estee is not just a pretty face, she has a wonderful, loving personality to match! Estee gives the best hugs and kisses. She could probably stand on her hind legs hugging you for hours if you let her! Estee came to Heartland from southern Illinois to find her forever home, and we frankly can't believe she is still at the shelter. Estee is friendly with all people, except she does not like little kids. Sometimes dogs do not respond well to their energy and Estee is one of those dogs. Speaking of energy, Estee has quite a bit and she loves to play fetch with tennis balls. She is great at retrieving and while she hasn't mastered the command "drop it" she will happily let you take the ball out of her mouth. Estee is great about going potty outside and she is easy to walk on a leash! She is very intelligent and knows some basic commands as well. Estee is treat motivated so she would be easy to teach advanced commands to! She is not dog aggressive unless a dog is aggressive towards her in which case she will react, but Estee has no problem being next to most of the dogs at the shelter. Currently Estee is being treated for the completely curable case of Heartworm that she came in with, so she isn't able to run and play as much as we would like to let her (treatment requires low activity) but she goes on frequent walks. She will need to get two more shots before she is cleared but Heartland is covering the cost and Estee is still able to go home at any point! We would hate for this to be a deterrent to her adoption since she is a perfectly healthy young dog! Estee loves to be outside but she's also happy to be warm and cozy inside on her bed. She would love to be a couch potato with you this winter!

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. If we had to choose one word to describe Felicia it would be "ADORABLE!" This little girl is the cutest! Look at those ears!! Felicia is a little stressed while in the kennel and barks when she sees people. Please don't let this keep you from wanting to meet her! She is just asking you to take her out! Once she is outside she lets her sweet personality shine! She loves being with people! She loves playing with people and her favorite game is tug-o-war! Felicia is around 4 years old and weighs 9 pounds! She came to Heartland from an animal control and can't wait to find her happy forever home. If you are interested in meeting this adorable girl, make plans to come in to meet her soon!

We are working on it with him and he is smart and is learning quickly. The cutest thing he does is look right at you in the eye and talk to you! Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed. Papa Bear is a five year old terrier mix that loves to give great bear hugs! He has the softest coat and loves to be a lap dog... A 55 pound lap dog! Papa has been at Heartland for approximately a year and is still searching for his forever home. He was transported to our shelter from Miami, FL where he had a sad life with an owner who didn't treat him well and did not show him the love he deserves! Thankfully, Papa made his way to safety and is a great example of how resilient his breed is. Despite Papa's past, he LOVES all people and dogs! He shows his love by giving big kisses and hugs. What a chic magnet! This boy should go to a home with an experienced dog owner and no young children due to his strength and guarding of items from people he doesn't know. Once Papa knows and trusts someone, he has no issue letting you take a toy out of his mouth or a food bowl away. Recently Papa Bear was Heartland's guest at our annual Walk of Love. He enjoyed meeting so many new friends - both two and four legged. He truly was a perfect participant! Please give Papa a chance to steal your heart. He doesn't feel comfortable when visitors stand in front of his kennel, so ask a staff member to bring Papa outside to meet you. This boy deserves a great home and second chance at life. Come meet Papa Bear and get your share of hugs and smooches today!

      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Northbrook, IL
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed. If Heartland had a yearbook Blade would definitely win Best Smile! Blade has this unique habit of showing all his teeth to show he's happy and he can even do it with the command "Smile"! Some might mistake this for a sign of aggression but some dogs do smile, and Blade is one of them! It's the cutest thing ever. Blade is approximately 5 years old and weighs right around 40 pounds. Blade came to Heartland all the way from Miami and he certainly had a tough life before we got him. Blade has scars on his side and stomach, and he also does not like to be touched around the neck or back end if he does not know you. Blade does not like most other dogs and will attempt to pull towards them on walks, but with his new harness on he is very responsive to his walker's direction. Other than that Blade is very well leash-trained, and knows his commands well. He's very treat motivated which makes him even easier to train! When Blade accepts you into his heart all he wants is to smile for you, give kisses, and try to sit on your lap. Because Blade has been mistreated in the past, he needs an owner who will understand his issues and give him time to adjust. Please open your heart to this deserving dog.

      Arlo

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Northbrook, IL
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Arlo has the sweetest face with his big brown eyes and pink nose that doesn't match. There is something so adorable about it! Arlo is very upset being back at the shelter. He has a nervous habit of curling in a ball and sucking the tip of his tail like a child might do with its thumb. It is really heartbreaking. Arlo was previously adopted into a home with another dog, and they ended up being best friends. Unfortunately, there were also kids in the home and Arlo did not do well with them. This family tried to make it work for months but ultimately they had to give him back. Arlo loves to be loved. He wants to be a lap dog and if you sit down in a chair he will put his front paws up on you and give you (too many!) face kisses. Arlo is housebroken, and he does love going for walks. He is not super interested in toys, but he would be a fun jogging partner. Arlo is 3 years old an weighs around 60 pounds. He really needs to get out of the shelter where he is constantly stressed, so if you are not sure you can adopt Arlo, please consider fostering him and he can be relaxed and happy in his foster home.
