A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Black and Tan Coonhound

      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Black and Tan Coonhound (short coat). Meet Duncan! This handsome fellow came to Gentle Jake's from Kentucky. This sweet lovable hound was residing in a rural shelter, listed as a stray, estimated to be 6-7 years old. Shelter staff knew he was a gem and reached out to us to help find him a safe place to wait for his forever home. Here is what Duncan's foster home has to say about him.... Duncan is an amazing dog! He is timid at first when he meets new people, but does become attached fairly quickly. He is not the type of dog to run up and jump on new people or visitors to the home. He prefers to stand back and take things in at a distance at first. He loves people, and once he knows you are ok, he will love you to bits. Duncan enjoys spending time in his crate, and will go there willingly to have a nap or to chill. He has no problem having his crate door shut for the night, or during the day when his people need to go to work. Duncan loves his visits to the dog park, and enjoys meeting new dogs of all sizes. He shows no signs of dog aggression, resource guarding, or fear aggression. Duncan would fit well in a family with respectful children. He is a laid back dog that may not want to play rough with younger children, or be climbed on. A working family would suit Duncan just fine. Daily walks and visits to the dog park are right up his alley. He does not have separation anxiety, so when you are at work, he will happily wait for you in his crate. Duncan is housetrained and knows to ask to go outside to do his business. He is still working on his house manners and will inspect food left out on the counter. He is a smart, fast learner. He understands what is not ok, and with some calm reinforcement, his house manners will be great in no time! Duncan has not been tested with cats. He is currently attending training sessions with his foster and is doing very well. We can provide his new home with all of the training info for what we have been working on with Duncan. Duncan is not an escape artist, or fence jumper/climber. He does not dig. Duncan is a quiet dog and does not howl much. He will use his nose to get your attention if there is something he wants. Duncan travels well in the car. Overall, Duncan is an awesome dog. "how someone let him go is beyond me". Posted Breed: Bluetick Coonhound (short coat). Meet Faith! This striking beauty came to Gentle Jake's as an owner surrender in Ohio. Ufortunately, when the young family members lost interest in her, she was forced to live outside, which was foreign and heartbreaking for her, having been a house dog since a puppy. More bad news came for Faith when she tested positive for Heartworm. Faith stayed with a loving foster home while she completed her Heartworm treatment. Faith is now healthy and glad to have that part of her life behind her. She was a model patient, and even got the starring role in some Heartworm education video's produced by her veterinarian. Everyone who meets Faith falls in love! Faith is housetrained and crate trained. She loves other dogs, and is great with all kids and adults. She has no interest in cats and tends to stay away from them. Faith loves to go for a walk and is doing great with her leash training. Faith does not dig, and is not a fence climber or jumper. Since Faith was on strict crate rest while undergoing her Heartworm treatment she has put on a little extra weight. With gradual increases in her exercise, and a high quality diet, she will be back to her healthy weight in no time! Faith is a very quick learner. She knows to wait when a door is opened, and not push her way past when going in or out. Faith is an absolute treasure that will make a cherished addition to a loving family. Posted Breed: Black and Tan Coonhound (short coat). Meet Memphis! This sweet young (3-4 year old) girl is super happy and eager to please. She was surrendered by her owner due to a job change. Memphis was a house pet, and not kept outdoors. She is housetrained, walks well on a leash, plays well with other dogs and is not bossy with her playmates. She is a curious girl that takes things in stride. Gentle Jake's pulled Memphis from a county shelter in Ohio, and moved her to a boarding facility where she is receiving more attention. She has been given great reviews by her caregivers. She has not been cat tested, but given her willingness to back away from small dogs that don't care to play with her, it is likely that she would be respectful of cats as well. Memphis is quiet in her kennel and doesn't seem to have a strong desire to vocalize. She is a hound, and loves to explore with her nose. She will require a fully fenced yard, and a family that is willing to walk her regularly and keep up with her training so she can build on her already good manners. Memphis would be a great addition to pretty much any family. Her happy-go-lucky personality is a real treat to be around! Location: USA
Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound (short coat). Meet Abby. This sweetheart found herself in a rural Ohio shelter in February 2012. Barely a year old at the time, she quickly stole the hearts of the shelter workers when she laid her head in the hands of the people who would pet her. Abby was quickly adopted into a loving home outside of Ottawa, Ont. Abby continued to bask in the love and affection showered on her in her home, and in turn, she has been the most gentle and calm girl. She would love nothing more than to lay in your arms while she sleeps. Being right by your side is the only place she wants to be. Abby's past is a mystery. Judging by her high anxiety in a vehicle, and her extreme separation anxiety, we suspect she was abandoned, and being in a car is the last place she was with her original people. Abby is exceptional with small children. She is currently living with another dog and a cat. She is fine with both. Abby does not require a companion animal in the home. What she absolutely MUST have is human companionship almost constantly. Work from home, stay-at-home parents or active, retired persons would be necessary. Abby does not handle being crated, and will become stressed when her people leave the home. She does bark when left. Abby does not travel well in a car, so would not be a good fit for a family that travels frequently. Abby's challenges are far outweighed by the love she gives and the pleasure she will bring to her new family. Abby's current adoptive family are needing to re-home her due to family medical challenges. They will work with Gentle Jake's to ensure a smooth transition for Abby into a new loving family. Through no fault of her own, her family is going through many changes and Rosey is in need of a new home. Rosey's family loves her very much but feel that she would be happier in a more stable environment. Rosie is a 5 year old spayed female Bluetick English Coonhound. She has a very sweet personality but can be timid with new people. She is trained to ring a bell at the door to go to the washroom, knows all her basic commands, is kennel trained but also can be left out of the crate (providing there is no garbage cans with goodies in it). She is non destructive. Rosie would do well in a home with teenagers but not with young kids. She has been living with a chihuahua and a lab X and a cat for the last 4.5 years. She loves going for walks, and walks well on leash. She is energetic but also loves to lay on the couch and be lazy or lay on the floor in sunbathe. This handsome boy came to us from Kentucky, and is about 3 - 4 years old. He's a very energetic boy who loves to run and play with other non-dominant female dogs. He will accept a non-dominant male dog, but more cautiously. Smokey will do best with an experienced hound owner who can provide him with routine and lots of exercise and structure. Smokey is a smart boy who looks to his people to give him the leadership he needs. We would like to find Smokey a hom e with someone who will continue to work on his training. He is very eager to please. He would also do best with another confident female dog to play with. Children 12+ are recommended, but younger could be considered depending on the child's ability to respect his space. Once Smokey burns off some energy he loves to cuddle with his people. No cats please. He will make a wonderful companion for the right family. If you think you have what Smokey needs, please consider filling out an adoption application form. Ruby-Tuesday aka RubyTue (formerly known as Daisy) is a playful 3 yr old female Treeing Walker Coonhound. She is a stunning tri-colored beauty with soft, soulful eyes and intelligence to match! She’s had a bit of a rough start being shuffled from shelter to shelter and a failed adoption behind her (through no fault of her own). Who could abandon this little sweetheart who ju st wants to give love & tail wags & kisses! RubyTue was pretty thin when she came to foster home with gastro-intestinal issues and required special food. But that turned out to be just stress and fear of being all alone in the world! She gained her body weight back quickly in a safe foster home with other canine siblings. She can be a little dominant with other dogs her own size, until she gets to know them and establishes her place in the hierarchy. She is very food motivated and will do anything you ask, just a simple treat and belly rub! She is learning her basic commands and knows “sit”; we are working on recall and crate training. RubyTue was not a fan of the crate initially but she now runs to it to get her meal and treats, she even recognizes it as her very own bedroom and safe place. RubyTue may have had a rough start in the world, but she is thankful that she landed with Gentle Jake’s Coonhound Rescue! Ruby MUST have a securely fenced yard with at least a 5 foot fence. Un-fenced yards will not be considered.
