Etta Mae is a sweet and active middle aged (maybe 8 yrs old) Treeing Walker Coonhound. She is such an easy girl to care for and is looking for a home that can walk her regularly or has a high fenced yard to exercise. Her Foster Mom owns Pointers and she keeps right up with them when running and playing. Another playful companion dog would be ideal for Etta Mae in her forever home. She has been fully vetted including a dental to remove several bad teeth. Her new family will need to be diligent with annual dental checkups in addition to routine vetting. Fully crate and house trained, Etta Mae would be fine with a family or individual who have working hours but are still willing to make her the center of their lives. She is currently fostered through a Gentle Jake's Foster Home in Ohio, USA. A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

He was rescued by Gentle Jake's this summer and has since been thriving in his foster home. Prince now goes by Beau at his foster home. He's still learning about life as a house hound but his progress is unbelievable. He's such a cuddler and with those good looks he can be pretty persuasive. Beau LOVES other dogs and playing. He is great with cats which is a huge bonus. He jumps about 10 feet in the air when he knows he's going on a walk. Beau/Prince will require a home where he has routine, exercise and company. A big shout out to his foster family for supporting his development and providing him the right environment to flourish. Prince is a very handsome 3 ½ year old Treeing Walker Coonhound. He is a bit shy but does warm up. He likes to play with other dogs. We do not know how he is with cats. Prince will need someone who can be patient with him while he gains confidence and trust. Another dog for company would be ideal for Prince. Prince is currently staying with a foster home in Victoria Harbour Ontario ( near Midland ). We would love to see him in a forever home! Handsome Smokey Bones is a young fellow, three or four years old, who was recently rescued from a high kill shelter in Kentucky. Smokey may not have lived in a house before he got here, but he’s adjusting well to his new freedom and his life as part of his foster family. He’s working hard to learn his new name and all the words he needs to understand, and he’s a good student (especially when he’s rewarded with a little treat when he gets it right!). Smokey is wonderful with his foster dog brother and sister and loves to play. He is a gentle and sweet natured boy. He’s having lots of fun experiencing all the new sights, sounds and smells of his adopted country. Smokey needs to put on a bit of weight, but otherwise he is healthy. He is neutered and up to date on all of his vaccinations. Smokey has the shiniest coat in town and lots of adorable freckles. Location: Ontario, ON
Posted Breed: Foxhound (medium coat). Please contact Jean (houndrescue@yahoo.ca) for more information about this pet. Jackson was picked up as a stray in the countryside just outside of Ottawa. The vet estimates him to be 10 years old (although he has more energy than you'd expect from a 10 year old) and he weighs about 45 lbs. He is a sweet gentle boy who just wants to rest his head on your lap and gaze soulfully into your eyes while you rub his ears. He is playful with other dogs and with his toys, and he gets along wonderfully with the cats in his foster home. Jackson loves going for walks in the local parks, and is starting to enjoy walks around his suburban neighborhood, although the noise of passing cars still startles him. He used to howl along with the fire engine sirens, which was kind of cute, but he doesn't do that anymore now that he is used to them. He enjoys hanging out in the backyard and is pretty quiet for a hound, barking only occasionally as people pass by the house. Jackson doesn't like thunderstorms and will head to the safety of his crate to wait for the storm to end. He is a good boy in his crate and rarely makes a peep when he is in there. His house training is coming along really well. Jackson has one eye that looks like it suffered some damage but the vet does not think it is painful. He doesn't seem to be able to blink, but the eye is well-lubricated and there is no damage to the cornea. We're not certain if he has any vision in that eye. There is nothing that needs to be done with it - maybe just drops every now and then if it seems irritated. Jackson has been neutered and has had dental work done to remove some bad teeth. Posted Breed: Bluetick Coonhound / Coonhound (short coat). Hi y’all, I am Wendy, and I think I’m four or five year old. I am a Bluetick Coonhound who was rescued by some wonderful people in West Virginia. Someone nice saw that I was having a hard time finding a home, so I made the long trip to my foster home in Port Hope, Ontario. I am a brave girl who has had cancer and Lyme disease survivor – but I sure am healthy now! I am goofy and gentle and loyal and I love to be cuddled by my people. I love other dogs – especially my foster brother and sister, but I’m not too sure about cats actually. I would really like to live in a place that had another dog that I could snuggle with. I am spayed – no more puppies for me! And I have had all my shots. I love to go for walks – I love it so much that I spin and dance when I see my harness!! But some of those loud noises make me a little bit afraid – darn trucks and vacuum cleaners make me bark a bit. What do you think? Aren’t I adorable? Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound / Coonhound (short coat). Meet Shyla! This beautiful girl is an older Treeing Walker Coonhound who is approximately 9 - 10 years old. She is about 60 pounds. She is very friendly and just wants to be loved. She is still a little shy with certain noises but is gaining confidence every day. From her foster mom: Shyla is one of the sweetest, kindest dogs I have ever met. She is so gentle and loving. Shyla would love nothing more than to spend the day cuddling with her person on the couch and going for a couple of walks a day. She also enjoys going to the dog park. When Shyla first came to us she was very timid and shy (hence the name). She is still very unsure of certain noises and will run out the door but will soon come back inside. She has learned how to play with other dogs and discovered toys. It has been amazing watching her grow into a happy, more confident dog. I would love to see Shyla go to a home with another confident friendly dog to help her gain more confidence. She would love to have a buddy that she can snuggle with when her people are not at home. Shyla is crate trained and likes to go in her crate when there are thunder storms. She can be left alone uncrated and is not destructive and has not had an accident in the house. She walks very well on leash. She is also good in the car, she just lays down and goes to sleep. When she is nervous she does drool! Information about this dog is current. She is a stunning tri-colored beauty with soft, soulful eyes and intelligence to match! She’s had a bit of a rough start being shuffled from shelter to shelter and a failed adoption behind her (through no fault of her own). Who could abandon this little sweetheart who ju st wants to give love & tail wags & kisses! RubyTue was pretty thin when she came to foster home with gastro-intestinal issues and required special food. But that turned out to be just stress and fear of being all alone in the world! She gained her body weight back quickly in a safe foster home with other canine siblings. She can be a little dominant with other dogs her own size, until she gets to know them and establishes her place in the hierarchy. She is very food motivated and will do anything you ask, just a simple treat and belly rub! She is learning her basic commands and knows “sit”; we are working on recall and crate training. RubyTue was not a fan of the crate initially but she now runs to it to get her meal and treats, she even recognizes it as her very own bedroom and safe place.
