A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound / Hound (short coat). Adoption Fee: 400.00. Hello from Ernie! I’m a typical lazy (10ish year old) treeing walker coonhound just looking for my own retirement home where I can sleep or hang out on the couch and keep you company. I am feeling great after recently been treated for heartworms and having some dental work done. I do have some arthritis in my back legs (who doesn't at this age right?), so sometimes it takes me a minute to get this old body moving. I really like my crate and will go in there to eat and hang out, and to sleep every night. I have done a great job with my house training and no longer mark in the house. My foster mom has a doggie door that goes out to a fenced yard, which I really like so I can roam free and bark at all the trees. I also bark to say hello to my foster Mom or to let her know that I am hungry. I would be best suited for a country property so your neighbours don't complain about by outside voice :) I like car rides, but I could use some practice walking on a leash. I’m not a chewer (not even toys or shoes!) and I’m not a beggar for treats. I’m very tolerant with other dogs and am great with younger kids, but I prefer to hang back and watch them play. I'm also great with cats! I just want to lay on a big comfy pillow or lay in the sun and sleep the day away. It’s retirement, right? Let’s hang out together! I promise not to snore too loudly! Please Note: We are all volunteers and busy taking care of our foster dogs so please take the time to fill out our on-line adoption application if you are interested in more information about any of the hounds that we have for adoption. Posted Breed: English Coonhound (short coat). Adoption Fee: 400.00. Miss Paisley known in the GJCR family as Alice, has come a long way since being found in Southern Ohio with severe eye and dental injuries caused by a gunshot to the head. A good Samaritan stepped up to fund the surgery necessary to remove her damaged eye and teeth. Since, Paisley has recovered 100% and appears to have no long-term repercussions from her injuries. Paisley is an energetic, playful and very loving girl who would best be suited in a home with a very active family and older children as she can be a little over bearing and mouthy when she is excited. She plays well with other dogs of any age and gender. Paisley will need a large fenced yard where she can burn off stream playing with a playmate or chasing a ball. She would also make an excellent running partner as she has stamina and the athleticism to go for miles. She still has a hard time understanding why the cats won’t rough house with her, but has never shown aggression towards them. Paisley walks well on a leash and respects our fenced yard with no issues. She has impeccable kennel habits and will sleep in her crate or in bed with her family. Paisley loves toys, but needs to be under supervision while playing with them as she can be destructive and ingest parts. On that same note, Paisley has been known to pick up non-toy items such as shoes, socks, etc. so keeping a tidy home is necessary for her safety. However, Paisley is quickly learning “drop it” or “leave it” when it comes to those items. For that reason, Paisley is confined to her crate when we are not home or too busy to pay close attention to her. Paisley understands simple commands such as sit, wait (stay), drop it, and is coming along nicely with her recall. She is crate trained and only occasionally has accidents in the house when we are not paying attention to her cues. Paisley has had a heartworm and 3 tickborne disease negative test, is up to date on vaccines, spayed, and is current on heartworm, intestinal parasite and flea and tick prevention. Paisley is estimated to be just over one year old. Finding a home for Paisley is not as important to us as finding the right home for her. She is a special soul and deserves a home best suited for her. Until that time, Paisley will continue to learn and experience life with her wonderful foster family. Location: USA
Posted Breed: Black and Tan Coonhound (short coat). Adoption Fee: 400.00. Meet Duncan! This handsome fellow came to Gentle Jake's from Kentucky. This sweet lovable hound was residing in a rural shelter, listed as a stray, estimated to be 6-8 years old. Shelter staff knew he was a gem and reached out to us to help find him a safe place to wait for his forever home. Here is what Duncan's foster home has to say about him.... Duncan is an amazing dog! He is timid at first when he meets new people, but does become attached fairly quickly. He is not the type of dog to run up and jump on new people or visitors to the home. He prefers to stand back and take things in at a distance at first. He loves people, and once he knows you are ok, he will love you to bits. Duncan enjoys spending time in his crate, and will go there willingly to have a nap or to chill. He has no problem having his crate door shut for the night, or during the day when his people need to go to work. Duncan loves his visits to the dog park, and enjoys meeting new dogs of all sizes. He shows no signs of dog aggression, resource guarding, or fear aggression. Duncan would fit well in a family with respectful children. He is a laid back dog that may not want to play rough with younger children, or be climbed on. A working family would suit Duncan just fine. Daily walks and visits to the dog park are right up his alley. He does not have separation anxiety, so when you are at work, he will happily wait for you in his crate. Duncan is housetrained and knows to ask to go outside to do his business. He is still working on his house manners and will inspect food left out on the counter. He is a smart, fast learner. He understands what is not ok, and with some calm reinforcement, his house manners will be great in no time! Duncan has been tested with cats and showed absolutely no interest. He may even be frightened but an overly assertive cat :) He is currently attending training sessions with his foster and is doing very well. We can provide his new home with all of the training info for what we have been working on with Duncan. Duncan is not an escape artist, or fence jumper/climber. He does not dig. Duncan is a quiet dog and does not howl much. He will use his nose to get your attention if there is something he wants. Duncan travels well in the car. Overall, Duncan is an awesome dog. "how someone let him go is beyond me". I am a young Treeing Walker Coonhound and I am a very sweet but curious and busy girl. I am about 3 years old. Willa does get along with other dogs and would do well in a home where she can have fenced yard to run around in. She also has a unique smile.... she shows her teeth but she's really just smiling at you. Willa seems stand-offish when first meeting strangers but quickly warms up. Willa is approximately 3 years old. Willa will sit for her treats and will also smile. Some may say it looks weird but she is just showing you her smile. We highly recommend that Willa's new family continue with her training through an obedience class or a training plan. She is a good dog that has lots of potential. He's a very energetic boy who loves to run and play with other non-dominant female dogs. He will accept a non-dominant male dog, but more cautiously. Smokey will do best with an experienced hound owner who can provide him with routine and lots of exercise and structure. Smokey is a smart boy who looks to his people to give him the leadership he needs. We would like to find Smokey a hom e with someone who will continue to work on his training. He is very eager to please. He would also do best with another confident female dog to play with. Children 12+ are recommended, but younger could be considered depending on the child's ability to respect his space. Once Smokey burns off some energy he loves to cuddle with his people. No cats please. He will make a wonderful companion for the right family. If you think you have what Smokey needs, please consider filling out an adoption application form. Jim doesn't need to be right beside, just likes to know you are there. He will put himself to bed if he feels tired, without trying to get up on the bed or other furniture. While Jim looks skinny now, we are slowly putting weight on him. He has a good appetite, but doesn't eat too quickly. Jim gets along well with the other dogs in the house with no squabbling or dominance issues. He doesn't try to play with the others, but doesn't mind their company. Posted Breed: English Coonhound (short coat). Adoption Fee: 400.00. Hello there: Name’s Gibby and I’m not much of a talker, but I figured if you were interested in making me part of your family, you would probably want to know a few things about me. I’m a 5 year old Redtick Coonhound and I’ve been told I’m quite handsome. Although I was a stray I quickly figured out how to be a good house guest, going out side when nature calls, staying out of things when I’m left alone. In fact, I quite like just finding a comfy place to sleep while I wait for my people to come home. I like to go for walks and play at the dog park. Occasionally some dogs get my dander up, but I’m a lover not a fighter so we figure it out and soon we are having fun. Other dogs in my home are fine too, as long as they don’t put their nose in my bowl, but hey, who wouldn’t get a little put out about that? Cats I’m good with – they smell interesting but not enough to chase. Do you have a car? Anywhere you want to go – I’m all about the car! And boat rides are fun too, just don’t expect me to jump in. Swimming is for labs I’m a huge snuggler, and a loving and happy guy but when I'm tired and sleeping, I like to be left alone. No hugs, or petting as I wake up startled and can be a bit grouchy. Just like you probably wouldn't like a person waking you out of a deep sleep....neither do I. Even though I like the little ones. they tend to move fast and forget to let sleeping dogs lie so my guardians have decided that the best home for me would not have children under 12. So why is a great guy like me looking for a new family? Well, my current guardians are expecting their first baby and I am having a hard time letting people around the lady, even her husband. I was fine until the pregnancy, but I’ve become overprotective and can’t seem to stop guarding her. I’m ok with everyone when she isn’t around ‘cause I really do like everyone. So, there's my story. We all have a past, and that's what makes us who we are today. I’m hopeful there is someone out there who will love me for my quirks and let me love them for theirs. Anything else you need to know? Well, all you got to do is fill in an application so you can talk to these nice folks at Gentle Jake's about me; then maybe we can get to know each other in person. I’ll be waiting. Ruby-Tuesday aka RubyTue (formerly known as Daisy) is a playful 3 yr old female Treeing Walker Coonhound. She is a stunning tri-colored beauty with soft, soulful eyes and intelligence to match! She’s had a bit of a rough start being shuffled from shelter to shelter and a failed adoption behind her (through no fault of her own). Who could abandon this little sweetheart who ju st wants to give love & tail wags & kisses! RubyTue was pretty thin when she came to foster home with gastro-intestinal issues and required special food. But that turned out to be just stress and fear of being all alone in the world! She gained her body weight back quickly in a safe foster home with other canine siblings. She can be a little dominant with other dogs her own size, until she gets to know them and establishes her place in the hierarchy. She is very food motivated and will do anything you ask, just a simple treat and belly rub! She is learning her basic commands and knows “sit”; we are working on recall and crate training. RubyTue was not a fan of the crate initially but she now runs to it to get her meal and treats, she even recognizes it as her very own bedroom and safe place. RubyTue may have had a rough start in the world, but she is thankful that she landed with Gentle Jake’s Coonhound Rescue! Ruby MUST have a securely fenced yard with at least a 5 foot fence. Un-fenced yards will not be considered. He is a senior boy who quickly became accustomed to the "finer" things in life -- soft bed, back scratches, chopped up food, and adoration! Not much is known about his background, but he appears to not have had a good life prior to rescue. He was very underweight with little muscle tone in hind quarters. Dave had several rotten teeth removed and is feeling much better now. Dave has been in his foster home since May. He has put on much needed weight and slowly building up muscles in his hindquarters.
