A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Update on our sweet boy: Holden is one gorgeous foxhound (possibly Hamiltonstovare Hound), who has been learning new manners and commands at the speed of light! Holden is 2 years old and a very high energy boy. He is incredibly intelligent and is eager to please his people. He really is a sweetheart, just a young guy that has lots of energy to burn. He runs well either with his jogging partner or along side a bike. He just loves to run! Holden has learned that his crate is not a bad place to be, and will willingly go into it once he has been out for a good walk first. Holden would make a fantastic running partner! When you are ready to relax he will happily cuddle up with you. Holden gets along well with other dogs and loves to play. He pays no attention to cats. Holden does not show aggression while eating or chewing his bones beside other dogs. He would benefit from an experienced dog owner who can provide him with the gentle leadership and the exercise he needs and someone who is home alot as Holden doesn't like being alone to long away from his family. Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound (short coat). Meet Willow, she is a female treeing walker coonhound, approximately 3-4 years old, weighing 40 lbs. She has a very fun personality and is very energetic. She's a big suck, so she always loves to lay with you on the couch when it's time to relax to soak up your snuggles and pets. she is a really affectionate and lovey dog, always trying to get your attention. She is on her way to being fully house trained; she will need continued consistency and patience. Willow does very well in her crate although she's apprehensive to go in at first. But once she's in she lays quiet. she gets along very well with other dogs big and small, loves to play tug a war and run with other dogs and humans, she plays very well with toddlers and children, she is super easy going. Willow is progressing quickly on her leash training. She loves going for walks and saying hi to everyone she meets, try's to get as much love out of everyone she can. She's got a hound nose and really likes food. She will often jump on the counter or try to sneak in the fridge when she has the chance but we are working on that and in the short time we have had her we've seen drastic improvement. I think once she feels secure in knowing food comes consistently this will also tame our. She loves car rides and travels well. Once you meet her and see how happy, loving and playful she is you will easily fall in love with this adorable girl. Location: Ontario, ON
Posted Breed: Foxhound (short coat). Please contact Jean (houndrescue@yahoo.ca) for more information about this pet. Do you like Timbits? So does Jackson . Do you like other dogs, cats and people? So does Jackson . Do you like going for moderate walks? So does Jackson . This gentle fox hound was found as a stray near Ottawa and came to Gentle Jake’s in July 2016. He is estimated to be 10 years old despite his puppy-like energy that will melt your heart. He is a medium sized dog, just about 50lbs. Jackson is a medium energy dog who enjoys 1 or 2 moderate walks each day, and is content to snooze away the rest of the day by your side. He walks fairly well on leash; he makes a lot of friends since he is always veering off to meet new people. Busy downtown streets are not for him as the sound of fast cars and loud trucks startles him and he tries to bolt, but he does fine on quiet residential streets. On trails and open fields Jackson is tempted to follow his nose so no off-leash for him, but he does well on a 30-foot leash. He has gone to the dog park a few times and seems a little overwhelmed by all the activity, but it's possible he would learn to enjoy it with regular visits at quieter times. Jackson would do best in a home that has other pets as he is very social but not exactly a leader. In the home he gets along well with the cats (generally he ignores them but he does like the occasional snack of cat food when he can find some). He enjoys the company of dogs and would like to have a friend that he can race around the yard with. Jackson is crate-trained and spends the day in his crate while his foster is at work. He loves to tear apart stuffed dog toys and will sometimes swallow the pieces, so only durable toys are suitable for him. Because he is denied his beloved stuffies he will resort to the occasional slipper or mitten (and also cat toys), so crating or confinement to a safe area is recommended when he is left on his own. Jackson is neutered, has been to the dentist and also has had his “lazy eye” inspected. He has an allergy-based cough that is easily managed with daily pills that he happily takes with Cheez Whiz. The pills are cheap (approx $10/month). Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound (short coat). Lizzy is a very social girl, estimated to be about 3 years of age. She is spayed and has had 9 teeth removed (likely damaged from chewing on a cage), but that doesn’t stop her from loving treats and her dog food. Although Lizzy is housetrained, she will need a fully fenced and secure yard to protect her from following her coonhound nose. Regular walks are on Lizzy’s daily agenda. Lizzy's foster home is currently working on her leash manners, and she is doing well walking as a single dog or as part of a group of three. She is also turning out to be a great athletic dog when going for a run with her foster mom! Currently Lizzy is being fostered with 4 other dogs, ranging from 10 lbs to 55lbs, and she is good with all of them. She loves to play but does not get pushy. If the other dogs let her know they are not interested she wanders away. Lizzy prefers to sleep on her dog bed and has been able to go a full work day with no accidents. Once she knows what door to go out she will go to it and let out a cry. She is very gentle at taking treats. She does not grab at all and has shown no aggression with her food or treats or toys. She eats nicely beside other dogs once she gets to know them. Lizzy and her foster siblings enjoy going to work with their foster Mom. She is very calm and social in a setting with new and changing situations :) Lizzy is an absolute sweetheart that would make a great addition to a loving home. She would enjoy another companion dog in the home. She is cat friendly. When Lizzy was found as a stray, she was treated for a urinary tract infection and also had a bladder ultrasound and blood work. Blood results were great and showed no signs of kidney disease. Antibiotics cleared up her infection and she is now in great health. As a precaution, Lizzy has been placed on a special urinary health diet. It will be recommended that her new family continue with this diet. This handsome boy came to us from Kentucky, and is about 3 - 4 years old. He's a very energetic boy who loves to run and play with other non-dominant female dogs. He will accept a non-dominant male dog, but more cautiously. Smokey will do best with an experienced hound owner who can provide him with routine and lots of exercise and structure. Smokey is a smart boy who looks to his people to give him the leadership he needs. We would like to find Smokey a hom e with someone who will continue to work on his training. He is very eager to please. He would also do best with another confident female dog to play with. Children 12+ are recommended, but younger could be considered depending on the child's ability to respect his space. Once Smokey burns off some energy he loves to cuddle with his people. Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound / Hound (short coat). Riley is a very sweet, lovable and energetic ~2 year old Treeing Walker Coonhound. Riley was a stray originally from Ohio. Due to an unpredicted family split his owner is sadly no longer able to provide for all of Riley's needs. Riley is fully housetrained and has completed basic obedience training. When undistracted, he follows his commands extremely well. In the house, he is extremely well behaved. He takes treats gently and has shown no signs of food possessiveness. Like all hounds he is food motivated and if not monitored in the kitchen he will countersurf when he thinks no one is looking. Riley is relatively quiet for a coonhound - except when very excited (leaving for a car ride!) and he does let you know when someone is at the door! Riley is a lovable dog - who bonds very strongly with his chosen human. He has some insecurity and fears and although he has overcome many fears so far, he still needs additional support in this area. Riley has some fear of meeting new people so his social skills need further improvement and he would benefit from the influence of other well socialized dogs. Riley still suffers from separation anxiety. We think it would be best for Riley to find a home with an experienced dog owner. Ruby-Tuesday aka RubyTue (formerly known as Daisy) is a playful 3 yr old female Treeing Walker Coonhound. She is a stunning tri-colored beauty with soft, soulful eyes and intelligence to match! She’s had a bit of a rough start being shuffled from shelter to shelter and a failed adoption behind her (through no fault of her own). Who could abandon this little sweetheart who ju st wants to give love & tail wags & kisses! RubyTue was pretty thin when she came to foster home with gastro-intestinal issues and required special food. But that turned out to be just stress and fear of being all alone in the world! She gained her body weight back quickly in a safe foster home with other canine siblings. She can be a little dominant with other dogs her own size, until she gets to know them and establishes her place in the hierarchy. She is very food motivated and will do anything you ask, just a simple treat and belly rub! She is learning her basic commands and knows “sit”; we are working on recall and crate training. RubyTue was not a fan of the crate initially but she now runs to it to get her meal and treats, she even recognizes it as her very own bedroom and safe place. RubyTue may have had a rough start in the world, but she is thankful that she landed with Gentle Jake’s Coonhound Rescue! Ruby MUST have a securely fenced yard with at least a 5 foot fence. Un-fenced yards will not be considered. All of our dogs are fully vetted. They have been vaccinated, altered, microchipped and heartworm tested and on prevention. VISIT COONHOUND COMPANIONS WEBSITE TO SEE WHY ADOPTING A COONHOUND CAN BE A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE! www.coonhoundcompanions.com ADOPTION FEE: $400.00 LOCATION: Ladybug is currently in foster care in Toronto, ON.
