A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

J ack Jack is a 1.5 year old Bluetick Coonhound. He is fully vaccinated neutered and microchipped. He is a big sweetheart and loves to be around his humans. He is very sociable and loves to greet everyone he passes by, even children. He enjoys playing with all dogs at the dog park and on group dog walks. Jack walks well on a leash using a head halter type lead. He does like to sing his hound song when he sees small critters (squirrels, birds, cats, etc.) or when he gets excited, but he is easily redirected with cookies. Jack is house and crate trained, he can be left alone for a normal work day without any issues. Unfortunately Jack would not suit a home with cats as his instinct causes him to chase them. He would love to have another dog to play with. Jack is still young and does jump up on people when really excited but he is learning to sit politely for cookies or a toy. Jack would excel with some positive reinforcement training classes to build his bond with his human. He learns quickly and loves to please. He is very loving......you are likely to be met at the door by a wiggling body full of excitement.. He is good with people in general but possibly due to past experiences he is cautious and has to be introduced to some men. He is good with other dogs as long as they are neutered. Ranger is young and has a lot of energy and 65lbs worth of strength. He would do well with a large fenced in yard with another dog to play with. He will need some training on his leash manners as he is very strong and is learning not to pull. With practice and patience he will be an outstanding boy! He would do well with someone who is active and some nosework training classes. He is a very loving boy and will make a wonderful companion for the right family. She is looking for a calm home where she'll get a daily walk and be allowed to live inside as a close member of her family. She has basic obedience and is very well behaved! Abby adores human companionship and would love to be able to snuggle up with you on the sofa, or stay close by while you work in your garden. Abby has wonderful house manners and is a perfect greeter when company arrives. All humans are wonderful in Abby's eyes. Young and old will be blessed with her calm and gentle disposition. Her ideal family would have someone home most of the time. Abby is six years old and is full of zest and love for life. It's a joy to watch her dance around when it's time for a walk, or when she runs and plays with her foster siblings. She has spent the last five years in a loving home. She was standoffish at first but loves attention. She rarely jumps up. So far only barks occassionally...usually if she feels she is unjustly in crate but if you tell her to stop she is pretty good at obeying. She loves to play with my other dogs. Location: USA
Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound / Coonhound (short coat). Adoption Fee: 400.00. FOSTER HOME NEEDED! Meet Annabelle! I am a smaller sized Coonhound with beautiful coloring who is looking for a patient and experienced home with shy dogs. Although I am comfortable with other dogs, meeting new humans can be scary. I was rescued from an Ohio shelter and when someone would approach my kennel I tried to hide from them. My foster mom wishes I could talk and tell her about my past and why humans frighten me. I love my foster mom though, so once I learn to trust you, I am right by your side. One of my favorite activities we did together was take walks so I would get used to noises outside my house and bond with my human. I walk very nicely on a lead. I will tell you though, I can be a alarm barker. Meaning that some times I bark in my backyard if there are strange noises at the neighbors house. It's part of my anxiety, so I may not be suited for someone living in a subdivision where homes are close to each other My other trait is being food protective. I need to be fed in my crate or alone where other dogs or children cannot interfere. Annabelle has the softest coat, is crate and house trained, current on vaccinations and already spayed. Although we don't know her birth date Annabelle is young, maybe 3-5 years old. She is healthy and athletic, so could be a great running partner but also needing a fenced yard for containment. Although not an absolute requirement, she would benefit from having another well adjusted dog in her new home to help with adjusting in a new place. Her foster mom wants to find a home where Annabelle will be loved despite her shyness and history where she may not have had good life experiences. Additional questions about Annabelle can be discussed with approved applicants. Ruby-Tuesday aka RubyTue (formerly known as Daisy) is a playful 3 yr old female Treeing Walker Coonhound. She is a stunning tri-colored beauty with soft, soulful eyes and intelligence to match! She’s had a bit of a rough start being shuffled from shelter to shelter and a failed adoption behind her (through no fault of her own). Who could abandon this little sweetheart who ju st wants to give love & tail wags & kisses! RubyTue was pretty thin when she came to foster home with gastro-intestinal issues and required special food. But that turned out to be just stress and fear of being all alone in the world! She gained her body weight back quickly in a safe foster home with other canine siblings. She can be a little dominant with other dogs her own size, until she gets to know them and establishes her place in the hierarchy. She is very food motivated and will do anything you ask, just a simple treat and belly rub! She is learning her basic commands and knows “sit”; we are working on recall and crate training. RubyTue was not a fan of the crate initially but she now runs to it to get her meal and treats, she even recognizes it as her very own bedroom and safe place. RubyTue may have had a rough start in the world, but she is thankful that she landed with Gentle Jake’s Coonhound Rescue! Ruby MUST have a securely fenced yard with at least a 5 foot fence. Un-fenced yards will not be considered. Posted Breed: Bluetick Coonhound / Coonhound (short coat). Meet pretty Ladybug! Hi there! My name is Ladybug, and I have a huge personality for a little hound! I came all the way from Tennessee, where I was used for breeding and never allowed to live in a house. When I arrived to Canada I was so scared and hid in my crate for weeks, was pretty sick and just exhausted from my previous life. Thankfully, my foster parents were patient with me; they taught me how to live in a house (especially using those pesky stairs), how to walk on a leash, enjoy my dinner without fear, know what it’s like to have a cozy bed and make friends with people that come to visit, my foster siblings and other area dogs – I’m a real star around the neighbourhood! The wonderful rescue has helped me though a few health hiccups, even making sure I received the ACL surgery I needed. My little knee is as good as new, meaning I’m ready for long walks around the neighbourhood or trails – I LOVE my walks! Just please remember, I can NEVER be off-leash, but do LOVE my 20’ training leash when going for long walks on trails…oh the things I can sniff on those trails! I’m still working on my fear of males; I’m simply not confident around men and it takes a while for me to trust them. There are certain things males do that trigger my fear and set me back; the sound of an opening pop or beer can terrify me, so please just open them in a different room, or loud sounds of yelling or talking; I know you’re likely just excited watching that hockey game, but it makes me really scared. I am looking for a special home. I need someone who will be patient with me as we work together through my fears and training. I’m very timid at first and it might take me some time to trust. I’m good when left alone, but really love my human companions the most. I am the cutest naturally and know it too! Once you get to know my sassy personality, I’ll have you in stitches laughing non-stop! If you’re looking for a snuggle or walking buddy, I just might be your girl because I’m looking for my forever home. I am a laid back companion, quite happy to do whatever it is my people want to do, as long as we are together....and I love going for walks...I get so excited to see my harness...I can almost put it on myself. And if you have to keep me safe while you are off to work or go somewhere without me, I will hang out in my crate, with minimal fuss, as long as I have a bone or treat to keep me occupied. My foster Mom says I can be adorably stubborn sometimes, especially when I think I should have something, so I use all of my charms and sit so nicely. I like to play and socialize with other dogs, and meeting new people is fine with me. However, I do not like it when male humans bend or reach over me, it makes me anxious. As long as I am given a heads up I stay calm. As a rescue who has had a few bumps in the road, I am now more than ready to find my people, whom I will love and be loyal to for the rest of my dog days. Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Black and Tan Coonhound / Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Courtesy post.... Toby is a handsome, neutered male rescue. Toby is a Hound mix, medium sized dog - about the height of a Lab, but with a slighter build. He is very athletic, dextrous and bright. He's maybe 2-3 years old. He seems to be well socialized with all dogs, small and large. He absolutely adores pack life, and loves to be part of the family's activities. Toby would be over the moon to have at least one other large, younger, playful dog in his forever home, as he enjoys to play chase and wrestle games with dogs, but is also very respectful when other dogs are telling him to back off. He does not engage in conflict. He does well with small dogs, but he's so eager to play most of the time and the little guys in his current foster home are older, and some have mobility/health issues, so don't often accept his advances for play. There is a younger large dog that stays at the foster home a fair amount of time and they became thick as thieves quite quickly, leap frogging each other, boxing like kangaroos, ripping around the yard as fast as can be and rolling around the ground together. Toby does like a good game of fetch as well. A second dog in the home would also be a great comfort to him when his family is out. He does seem to settle well indoors and is crate trained. He's comfortable crated when his foster brothers and sisters who live there permanently are not. A crate would be a beneficial tool while Toby adjusts to his new home and learns good house etiquette and his new household's routine. He bonds quickly to his handler/caregiver and is eager to please. He has a sweet side to him as well, enjoying pats, massages and leaning against his handler. He's learning commands steadily and his leash skills have improved immensely in just a week's time. Toby can be wary of strangers until he is introduced, and then seems fine. He may not do well with some kids. He is a bit of a watch dog, and barks when strangers come on the property, he hears unfamiliar noises or sees unfamiliar sights on the property. No cats or other small pets as he does have a strong prey drive and will chase. Toby's ideal family would be adults or a family with calm, respectful, dog-comfortable teens and at least one other dog. A secured yard or play run is a must.
