Posted Breed: Coonhound / Hound (short coat). If you are interested in adopting Etta Mae, please complete our adoption application on our website at www.coonhoundrescue.ca The adoption process is also listed on our website FAQ link. Etta Mae is a sweet and active middle aged (maybe 8 yrs old) Treeing Walker Coonhound. She is such an easy girl to care for and is looking for a home that can walk her regularly or has a high fenced yard to exercise. Her Foster Mom owns Pointers and she keeps right up with them when running and playing. Another playful companion dog would be ideal for Etta Mae in her forever home. She has been fully vetted including a dental to remove several bad teeth. Her new family will need to be diligent with annual dental checkups in addition to routine vetting. Fully crate and house trained, Etta Mae would be fine with a family or individual who have working hours but are still willing to make her the center of their lives. She is currently fostered through a Gentle Jake's Foster Home in Ohio, USA. Please Note: We are all volunteers and busy taking care of our foster dogs so please take the time to fill out our on-line adoption application if you are interested in more information about any of the hounds that we have for adoption. VISIT COONHOUND COMPANIONS WEBSITE TO SEE WHY ADOPTING A COONHOUND CAN BE A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE! www.coonhoundcompanions.com ADOPTION FEE: $375.00 LOCATION: Etta-Mae is currently in foster care in Knox County, OH. A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Bluetick Coonhound (short coat). Adoption Fee: 400.00. Meet Beautiful Angel! I am about a year and a half old. I love to play and I’m not picky with who I play with! Dogs, big kids, even little kids but sometimes the little ones get exited and scare me which makes me nervous. I know my basic commands like sit and stay. My foster parents say I'm a really fast learner. I like being outside a lot and have learned that if I come when I hear a “click” ( from a clicker) that I get a treat. Boy do I love my treats! I love my foster family very much but hope I can find my forever home soon. A few words from my foster parents... Angel is a very sweet girl and will capture your heart quickly. She is house training well, learning fast by watching our other dog. She is shy at first, but once she warms up she is a bundle of joy. Angel is well on her way to being clicker trained and is food motivated and eager to please. She will do great with other dogs (not good with cats or small critters), and children, however she can get nervous when around toddlers as their loud noises and quick movements spook her. She is crate trained and knows the command “crate” to go in. She will amaze you. She is incredibly good around food. Although she'll go for a treat any time, she keeps her distance and stays quiet while we eat at the dinner table. She will do well in a household who enjoys being outside. Angel has lots of love to give. She loves snuggles after a long day! J ack Jack is a 1.5 year old Bluetick Coonhound. He is fully vaccinated neutered and microchipped. He is a big sweetheart and loves to be around his humans. He is very sociable and loves to greet everyone he passes by, even children. He enjoys playing with all dogs at the dog park and on group dog walks. Jack walks well on a leash using a head halter type lead. He does like to sing his hound song when he sees small critters (squirrels, birds, cats, etc.) or when he gets excited, but he is easily redirected with cookies. Jack is house and crate trained, he can be left alone for a normal work day without any issues. Unfortunately Jack would not suit a home with cats as his instinct causes him to chase them. He would love to have another dog to play with. Jack is still young and does jump up on people when really excited but he is learning to sit politely for cookies or a toy. Jack would excel with some positive reinforcement training classes to build his bond with his human. He learns quickly and loves to please. I am a laid back companion, quite happy to do whatever it is my people want to do, as long as we are together....and I love going for walks...I get so excited to see my harness...I can almost put it on myself. And if you have to keep me safe while you are off to work or go somewhere without me, I will hang out in my crate, with minimal fuss, as long as I have a bone or treat to keep me occupied. My foster Mom says I can be adorably stubborn sometimes, especially when I think I should have something, so I use all of my charms and sit so nicely. I like to play and socialize with other dogs, and meeting new people is fine with me. However, I do not like it when male humans bend or reach over me, it makes me anxious. As long as I am given a heads up I stay calm. As a rescue who has had a few bumps in the road, I am now more than ready to find my people, whom I will love and be loyal to for the rest of my dog days. So, if you think I'm the right guy for you, get going and fill out an application (does not obligate you to adopt me, but I bet you will) so we can talk. Patiently waiting... Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound / Coonhound (short coat). Meet pretty Sophie! I’m a very happy, affectionate, and playful two-year-old Treeing Walker Coonhound. I love to give kisses and hugs! I’m pretty skinny but healthy, and I should fatten up in no time. I do have a coonie howl, but I only raise my voice to tell you I want to come inside. A gate helps keep me off the kitchen counters, and I’m working on laying down while people eat instead of giving kisses and sneaking food. Cuddling on the couch with my foster dad is the best thing ever! But I’m also pretty content laying on my floor pillow next to my foster mom. She says I’m super cute and sweet. I like to eat in my crate but I don't need to sleep in there anymore. I'm house trained now and get to stay with my foster siblings when my foster people have to go out. I really love to play with my foster siblings, both human and canine, so I hope my new forever home has other dogs and kids I can run and play with so I don’t get bored. I’m not dominant or aggressive, but you might have to watch me sometimes around the younger kids. I just can’t help it. Their cheeks are so kissable! Please, won’t you give me a chance? I promise to be your best friend and love you forever! Floyd has spent the last 6 years living at a boarding facility with an irresponsible owner who basically just forgot about him! Then when her business was closing she said if a rescue didn't take him she was going to have him put to sleep. We could not let this happen to such a wonderful boy. He is now in a foster home waiting for a family to call his own. He is a good dog, knows some basic obedience commands and he is crate trained and house trained. Floyd is an active energetic boy for being 8 years old. He acts like a much younger dog! He also loves back scratches! Floyd is a scent hound and he loves to chase chipmunks and squirrels. He does not do well with cats. A fenced yard for him to run around in would be ideal for Floyd. He also loves going for walks. He will need some training on leash walking as he does like to pull and sniff everything! Floyd did not have any exposure to young children during the 6 years he was penned up. We are not recommending he be placed in a home with children under the age of 12. Please consider giving this boy a second chance with a family who truly loves him. Floyd would do very well as an only dog and the center of your universe. Posted Breed: Bluetick Coonhound / Coonhound (short coat). Meet pretty Ladybug! Hi there! My name is Ladybug, and I have a huge personality for a little hound! I came all the way from Tennessee, where I was used for breeding and never allowed to live in a house. When I arrived to Canada I was so scared and hid in my crate for weeks, was pretty sick and just exhausted from my previous life. Thankfully, my foster parents were patient with me; they taught me how to live in a house (especially using those pesky stairs), how to walk on a leash, enjoy my dinner without fear, know what it’s like to have a cozy bed and make friends with people that come to visit, my foster siblings and other area dogs – I’m a real star around the neighbourhood! The wonderful rescue has helped me though a few health hiccups, even making sure I received the ACL surgery I needed. My little knee is as good as new, meaning I’m ready for long walks around the neighbourhood or trails – I LOVE my walks! Just please remember, I can NEVER be off-leash, but do LOVE my 20’ training leash when going for long walks on trails…oh the things I can sniff on those trails! I’m still working on my fear of males; I’m simply not confident around men and it takes a while for me to trust them. There are certain things males do that trigger my fear and set me back; the sound of an opening pop or beer can terrify me, so please just open them in a different room, or loud sounds of yelling or talking; I know you’re likely just excited watching that hockey game, but it makes me really scared. I am looking for a special home. I need someone who will be patient with me as we work together through my fears and training. I’m very timid at first and it might take me some time to trust. I’m good when left alone, but really love my human companions the most. I am the cutest naturally and know it too! Once you get to know my sassy personality, I’ll have you in stitches laughing non-stop! If you’re looking for a snuggle or walking buddy, I just might be your girl because I’m looking for my forever home. Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound / Coonhound (short coat). Adoption Fee: 400.00. FOSTER HOME NEEDED! Meet Annabelle! I am a smaller sized Coonhound with beautiful coloring who is looking for a patient and experienced home with shy dogs. Although I am comfortable with other dogs, meeting new humans can be scary. I was rescued from an Ohio shelter and when someone would approach my kennel I tried to hide from them. My foster mom wishes I could talk and tell her about my past and why humans frighten me. I love my foster mom though, so once I learn to trust you, I am right by your side. One of my favorite activities we did together was take walks so I would get used to noises outside my house and bond with my human. I walk very nicely on a lead. I will tell you though, I can be a alarm barker. Meaning that some times I bark in my backyard if there are strange noises at the neighbors house. It's part of my anxiety, so I may not be suited for someone living in a subdivision where homes are close to each other My other trait is being food protective. I need to be fed in my crate or alone where other dogs or children cannot interfere. Annabelle has the softest coat, is crate and house trained, current on vaccinations and already spayed. Although we don't know her birth date Annabelle is young, maybe 3-5 years old. She is healthy and athletic, so could be a great running partner but also needing a fenced yard for containment. Although not an absolute requirement, she would benefit from having another well adjusted dog in her new home to help with adjusting in a new place. Her foster mom wants to find a home where Annabelle will be loved despite her shyness and history where she may not have had good life experiences. Additional questions about Annabelle can be discussed with approved applicants. Please Note: We are all volunteers and busy taking care of our foster dogs so please take the time to fill out our on-line adoption application if you are interested in more information about any of the hounds that we have for adoption. Filling out our application does not obligate you to adopt in any way. It does, however, help us to determine if the dog that your interested in would be a good match for your family and lifestyle. All of our dogs are fully vetted. They have been vaccinated, altered, microchipped and heartworm tested and on prevention.
