Posted Breed: Poodle (unknown type) / Mixed. Dixie is a 23 pound, 11-year-old cuddly Cockapoo. She is a peppy little senior gal that loves attention and really thrives on human contact. She is on the timid side when meeting new people; she takes her time and then slowly warms up to them. Dixie's sight is impaired which may explain her timidity. Dixie is intrigued by cats and would love to have a cat friend in her life if possible. She has lived with dogs, too, and would be fine as an only dog or part of a pack. She hasn't shown interest in toys. When walking on a leash, she doesn't pull, but she wanders in all directions. She never runs unless encouraged to do so. When she gets excited in the house, she does have accidents. This can likely be corrected with training. She whines a little when separated from her foster, but quiets down eventually. Her foster mom says "Dixie loves to take car trips. She doesn't act her age. Minus the cataracts, you wouldn't know she was about 12. She acts younger -- bouncy, and happy!" Dixie has multiple health issues that need ongoing attention. She is on daily eye medication, but only sees the ophthalmologist every six months. She has chronic ear and skin issues and is under the care of a dermatologist. She has environmental allergies and takes daily medication to help keep her skin and ears healthy and needs weekly medicated baths. She also has low thyroid and is on a thyroid medication and needs to have her thyroid levels checked every 4-6 months. She is looking for a devoted adopter who isn't bothered by her special needs. Dixie came to us as a stray from Salinas Animal Services.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Maltese / Mixed. Breed: Terrier/Maltese mix Age: 9 years Weight: 9 pounds Gender: Female My name is Eliza! I suppose my friends would say I am mellow while a bit on the shy side and that I can keep a secret. If you want to share your thoughts with someone, I'm the girl you've been looking for. I'm a wonderful listener and you will have my undivided attention. I do have some vision impairment so you'll have to be my eyes for me sometimes. I take daily eye drops but I am a good girl when we have to do them. I also enjoy meeting both two legged and four legged friends! I've reached the best years of my life. I'm smart enough to know you don't potty inside and you don't eat sofas or shoes. I'm not afraid to be at home alone and I appreciate the pleasure of lying close to my human while watching a little TV or listening to music. I'm always up for a stroll or a car ride. I'm not loud either - I don't bark unless there is a good reason to do so. Eliza has dry eyes and will lose her eye sight if she does not get her eye drop medication regularly, on an every few hour basis. She still has vision and this can be maintained with vigilant care. The cost is around $120 every 6 weeks. Are you looking for someone like me? Could I make you as happy as I know you can make me? Why not consider a greet and meet? I just know you will fall in love with me. I'm already in like with you because, well, you've taken the time to learn about me! I came to POMDR from Monterey County Animal Services.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Being surrendered at a shelter is likely a scary experience, but having your best friend by your side must be a huge reassurance. Toby and Marley are so attached to one another - we need a special adopter who will help us keep them together. They spend their time cuddling in the same bed or play-wrestling with one another. They're an odd couple and are sure to put a smile on your face! Toby is a 9-year-old, 23 pound Poodle mix, and Marley is his 5-year-old, 11-pound Chihuahua sidekick. They are both friendly and cheerful dogs. They adore your attention, although Marley has a more animated personality and will do all kinds of cute antics to get some love. Toby is right there waiting for a few scratches, too. They get along well with dogs of all sizes. Both of these pups need to lose some weight and would benefit from walks and a proper diet. They are good on leash, ride really well in the car and fall asleep together while you work or watch TV. They would likely be an easy fit in most dog-loving households. Toby and Marley came to us from Santa Cruz County Animal Services after being surrendered their by their guardian.

Posted Breed: Norfolk Terrier / Silky Terrier / Mixed. Breed: Norfolk Terrier mix Age: 10 years Weight: 10 pounds Gender: Male Jerry is a quiet, gentle dog and gets along better when with other dogs. After a patient introductory period, he calmly tolerates being groomed and handled. He is looking for the perfect person to show him some kindness and affection and make him part of their "pack." He would love someone patient enough to teach him that the world is a safe place to be! This sweet soul really needs someone who understands that because of his turbulent past, he will never be a terribly outgoing boy and will have to become your friend over time, making gradual progress as you earn his trust. He just needs that special someone to instill in him confidence and so he can respond with loyalty. More than anything, Jerry LOVES walks! His favorite activity is going for a walk and exploring your neighborhood! He sees that leash come out and really lights up. We have learned through our time with Jerry that he has a skin irritation that requires a daily regiment of medication. This can be costly and time consuming. He also is sensitive to many foods and we can help list appropriate options for him. Jerry arrived as a stray that was really in need of medical attention and grooming. His skin and coat are now healthy and he is looking very handsome! Jerry came to POMDR from San Jose Animal Services after being picked up as a stray.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Breed: Chihuahua Age: 6 years Weight: 7 pounds Gender: Male Bologna is a great companion, whether you're a senior who sticks close to home or a young family who's always on the go. He has a contagious love for life and an enviable carefree personality. He is loyal and affectionate and still has a lot of puppy-like enthusiasm for adventure! In his current forest home, he gets along great with both dogs and cats. He is also a star among the neighborhood kids who love to pet him and help walk him. They can't get enough of him, and he is always quite the gentleman. He loves going on adventures, particularly long walks and hikes. Whether it's up trails at a park or around the various pet-friendly shopping centers in the area, he loves going out and seeing the world. He also loves the car rides that get you there! At home, he is adorable because he likes to be in the same room as you. If you move to another room, he loyally follows if he senses you're not coming back after a few minutes. He also looks for any excuse to cuddle up and nap on or next to you. He is crate-trained and walks great on a leash. He even behaves while you're gone, which means he's a breeze to take care of. When you get home, he's there at the door with a big smile on his little face. Sadly, both of Bologna's guardians passed away. A family member gave him to a loving couple who offered to help him find his forever family and they reached out to POMDR for help. He just cannot wait to find a forever home that will love him as much as he loves them.

Posted Breed: Pekingese / Pomeranian / Mixed. Sampson and Goliath are brothers, and we'd love to keep them together. These guys are friendly and playful with everybody they meet - people, kids and dogs alike! We've nicknamed them "Copy and Paste." They even approach kitties with a gentle curiosity and would be fine with them in their future family. They're very good dogs who are both house-trained and crate-trained. Sampson is the "nurturer" of the two and is constantly taking care of his brother's hygiene by cleaning his face and ears. Goliath is the adventurous one who would prefer to be exploring your house and checking your floor for crumbs. Can't you just see yourself walking these two cuties down your street as a happy little family? They are great on leash and enjoy going for short walks. They're precious, sweet and will keep you laughing. Goliath has degenerative disease in his back and it is touch and go some days. He may eventually be completely paralyzed. We have been managing his condition with medication and mobility restriction and that helps. He is very attached to his brother, Sampson, who is being treated for heart disease. He takes daily medication which runs approximately $150 per month and he needs an ECG and radiographs every 4-6 months. They are being fostered by a veterinary ICU nurse so are in very good hands. They do both have a lot going on, so need to go to a home willing to see them through their medical needs and the related expenses. medications. Sampson and Goliath have been loved dogs their whole life, but their guardian's property is under new management and they are adamant that they can no longer have dogs. They've made the hard decision to re-home these sweet boys.

      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Maeby is a 7 pound, 7-year-old Chihuahua mix. She's a bit shy with new people, but warms up quickly. She will walk up very slowly to a new person, but then allows them to pet her, and in turn she gives them kisses. She does the same with children. Maeby can walk happily for miles, but at home she's very mellow, spending much of her time napping or sitting in laps. She gets along very well with the other dogs in her foster home, and they play together nicely. Maeby enjoys just hanging out, too, preferably with a "knee cap" to chew on!. Maeby overcame some initial nervousness with the household cats to the point where she now ignores them unless they are too persistent about pestering her. Maeby is fine meeting new dogs unless they are too rambunctious, in which case she worries. She walks very well on a leash in familiar places. In new or very busy places she can get spooked and try to pull somewhere that looks safe. Her foster family is working on this. When you have to go out without Maeby, she does fine with free roam inside the house and access to a doggie door so that she may go outside into the yard whenever she wishes. Being confined seems to stress her a bit. Maeby rarely barks, and usually will bark only once if she does feel the need. Maeby's foster mom reports: "Maeby's best trait is how affectionate she is. She constantly dotes on her people. She is also the best cuddle buddy anyone could ask for. She loves bed time and will fall asleep in your arms, right next to your head (she has her own pillow), or under the covers if you'll let her!" Maeby originally came to us from the Watsonville Shelter. She was adopted by a loving family several months ago, but one of their dogs is afraid of Maeby so we are looking for a new home for her.

He sniffs everything in his path on walks, including other dogs and the people he meets. Whether he's around strangers or friends, Marlon lives for just a little bit of attention. He blisses out on head and butt scratches and loves to curl up in a friendly lap. Same goes for car rides - if your lap is available, he's happy to keep it warm. Though Marlon is a wiggles-and-wags kind of guy, he was overlooked at the shelter for several months. After getting to know him and his gentle, loving disposition, we just can't understand why. But we definitely can see his potential to be an awesome new member of your family! Marlon gets along great with other dogs and cats and anyone who'll give him love. He relaxes in his crate at night or when you're gone and loves being by your side during the day. He's getting a refresher course on housetraining and so far doing great. Marlon is going to make someone a loving companion and fun partner for getting out and exploring the world. Marlon came to us from Salinas Animal Services after being picked up as a stray.

Phoebe is recovering nicely from spinal surgery, with a possibility of eventually regaining some ability to walk. The vet says that she is making excellent progress and has hopes she will be able to walk someday, but she is still on crate rest for a few weeks. Phoebe has a darling, silly personality and is NOT shy! She loves toys and giving kisses. She is outgoing with people and nonchalant about meeting other dogs. She is good at riding in the car. Her foster mama says she is an "overall great dog" who just needs extra TLC because of her back injury. Do you have room in your heart for this babe?
