Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). " My trust must be earned, but once earned.. I will be your shadow!" Meet To-To! Breed: Terrier Mix Gender: Male Adoption Fee: $250 Date into Rescue: 2/20/2015 Reason for being in rescue: Owner surrender Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? No Weight: Est 15 lbs Height: Est 14 What is my personality like? Toto is a very loyal, sweet dog. He is the type of dog that will bond with you and be your little shadow. Toto is not the type of dog that will run right up to you, he will need some patience. Once he warms up to you, he will be your best friend and lap dog. He is very food motivated and loves treats. He gets along great with other dogs. Update 11/7/20116: To-to is very descicive on who he wants to love. He is not one that can be won over just from a simple "hey". He is excellent on a leash and allows you to lead him. To-to says that his love is given on his terms to who he pleases.. But once he loves you there's no getting rid of him! He will sit in your lap all day with out a question. Every bit of patience will be totally worth it with To-To and he will be sure to thank you. Who I am seeking: Experienced, adult only home. Age: est 1.5 years old Please understand that these are rescued dogs, and sometimes their ages are only a guess. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture, and not to discriminate against older dogs. You never know which dog will steal your heart when you meet them! Please note - we do not ship dogs. If you are interested in adopting, please take a look at the distance between the foster home location and your location and make sure you are willing to make that trip. To apply, please visit our webpage at www.carolinapoodlerescue.org and visit the tab on the left that directions you to the online application. Please note that when screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, color, age, etc. Others here may be a better fit for you. It is very difficult to get to know a living animal from a picture and a short description. Since we are constantly getting in new dogs, this may be a dog not in our listings yet. We want you to be very happy with your new companion and will make suggestions based on what you tell us about you. A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Brussels Griffon (short coat). Little dog, Big personality! Date into Rescue: 04/27/2015 Reason for being in rescue: We rescued Whiskers from our local shelter Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Weight: Est 8 lbs Height: Est 11" Adoption Fee: $125 What's my story? It's quite a story. On 4/19/2013 a cute little dog was taken to the local shelter after being found by police. No microchip was found and no owner came forward so the people at the shelter started looking for a home .On 5/28/2013 they found that home with a lady named Elizabeth. It could have happened anywhere in the Carolina's, right? Sure it could - but Whiskers was found running at large - in Oregon. That's a far piece from South Carolina. Two years later, our Whiskers is once again picked up running at large. This time, a scan of his little body found a microchip implanted by the Oregon shelter he was adopted from. The chip was registered but attempts to contact the owner have gone unanswered. The phone # on record rings fast busy and the email's are ignored. After working with our new partner in Oregon on this, we've all agreed that it's best to find Whiskers a good home right here. What is my personality like? Whiskers has some behavioral issues, and a home without children is a must. He will show you his teeth, growl and snap over many things. He is a big resource guarder. He will guard his crate, his food, his toys, his treats, his friends and most importantly his human. Whiskers can be quite temperamental, possibly an indication of a bad past. He is in love with one of CPR's employees and does great with her. She can handle him, get him out of the crate, etc. Even with her, however, he will growl and guard treats. He also does not like his faced to be touch. On the positive side, he is a real cuddle bug. .He knows how to gives hugs and loves to show you. He will lay his little head on your shoulder to let you know he is there and that he loves you. Whiskers is very playful and loves to play with other dogs his size. Ideally, finding a trainer would be best. He seems to like women more than men and would thrive best in a home with someone that lives completely alone. Age: est birthday 04/19/2011 Please understand that these are rescued dogs, and sometimes their ages are only a guess. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture, and not to discriminate against older dogs. You never know which dog will steal your heart when you meet them! Location: Pacolet, SC
Posted Breed: Poodle (Standard) / English Sheepdog (long coat). Meet Sherlock! Breed: Shep a doodle - old english sheepdog and standard poodle mix Gender: male Date into Rescue: 7/31/14 Reason for being in rescue: Owner release, can't handle Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? YES -Behavior Weight: Est 50 lbs Height: Est 25 " Adoption fee: $329 Age: birthdater 10/6/2009 (Please understand that these are rescued dogs, and sometimes their ages are only a guess. We go with what we are told) What is my personality like? Sherlock's sad past history of shock-collar training (since he was a year old until he came to us, Sherlock wore an electric shock training collar at all times) makes me cry every time I think of it. This is abuse plain and simple - to be continually shocked for the slightest transgression would drive me crazy too. Sherlock developed some bad, and quite frankly, sad, habits. After being assessed by a trainer, we believe it will take a very long time - possibly years to undo the damage that has been done to this guy. He is very strong on a leash but will walk alongside you, especially when he is wearing a harness. Sherlock is a bright dog with many skills. Cues he knows include : sit, wait (stay), up (stand up from laying down), down (to lay down), leave-it (walk away from whatever it is he's smelling, eating, doing etc.), kennel (go to his kennel), heel, here (his recall/come). There are a few other commands that he knew like "place" and "look sharp" but the previous owner did not reinforce these commands. Sherlock does have some resource guarding tendencies, especially inside of his crate over his food bowl. This is most evident when other dogs approach him. Our caregiver can now put his bowl in and take it out of the crate with no issues. This is a huge improvement from when he first came here. Also, according to what his previous owner witnessed with him, he does not like to be approached while he is lying down. He will growl, show teeth and or bite. We have not seen this at the farm, however farm-life and home-life are two different things, and he may resort to this behavior again once he is back in a home. Also according to his behavior with his previous owner, he could not be bathed or groomed without a muzzle. At first, we were able to do both without a muzzle here, but again he is out of his comfort zone, and sometimes dog's do not show their "true nature" until they are comfortable. A few months into his stay with CPR, he did get wild during grooming and we chose to get him shaved down under sedation but we're going to try again. We have had two bite incidents at the farm with Sherlock. In both cases, Sherlock warned the caregiver repeatedly and the warning one time was ignored and the second time, Sherlock had a rag wrapped around his foot and it was cutting off circulation. Our caregiver was a new one and did not know he had time to call for help so he tried to remove the rag himself. It was painful and Sherlock snapped at him In both cases, the bite broke skin but did not require stitches or a doctor's visit. On a positive note, Sherlock is a happy, affectionate dog. There is much more to him than some bad habits, he loves attention and he loves to be petted. Sherlock is house and crate trained, and is VERY well mannered indoors. He really is a sweet dog who could make someone a wonderful companion, if you are are strong dog leader who understands this dog must always be closely monitored and whose energy must be drawn to positive activities. He loves to run and would make a great jogging or hiking companion. Update: Sherlock is absolutely brilliant. I believe Sherlock would do wonderful with a dog trainer or someone who has a adequate amount of experience with temperamental dogs. Sherlock truly wants to be loved and have a owner,, but his past makes it hard for him to put his trust in anyone. With a little bit of work, patience, and time he could be a amazing dog to have. Who I am seeking: Because of his behavior, we understand Sherlock may be with for the rest of his life so he is available for virtual adoption and is seeking sponsors to help us afford to care for him. If you hate shocking dogs as much as I do, then consider Sherlock as your virtually adoptable favorite guy. Thinking you can handle him - we have requirements for Sherlock. He must be adopted by someone who is a very experienced dog-owner. Preferably someone who has experience with the breed and with the behaviors that we are describing. He must be an only dog - other animals overwhelm him and spark some of these bad habits of his. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture, and not to discriminate against older dogs. You never know which dog will steal your heart when you meet them! Please note - we do not ship dogs. Yes - Diabetes Insipidus Weight: 13 lbs Height: est 13" Adoption Fee: I'm special Fence needed? Yes - Buckles is very active and loves to run. What does Diabetes Insipidus mean? Buckles drinks water - all day - and urinates frequently as a result. This is a rare form of diabetes that is caused by a deficiency of the pituitary hormone (vasopressin) which regulates kidney function. This disorder is very uncommon and is not curable. Here is what happens in the body -Buckles kidney's do not produce the hormone that neutralizes toxins in the body thereby making urine. Her kidney's can accept water but can't process it correctly. Water passes through her body very quickly and that is why she peees so much but often her "urine" is just pure water that has passed through. It does not have a urine odor at all and if you wipe it up there is no yellow to it. It is not what is called concentrated. Her body uses water but Buckles has to consume much more water than a normal dog for her body to get what it needs while her system is pushing it out much faster than it should. Imagine a water hose in the summer running full blast - and your drinking from it. You can get what you need - and Buckles body grabs what it needs from this rush of water going through it - but much of the water is wasted and therefore run on the ground just like our summer water hose. Your body functions more like a glass. Her body functions like that hose. Because of this rapid rush of water, Buckles must have access to water at all times so when she needs it,she can get it. If not she will dehydrate and that will lead to death. Buckles is currently on a hormone-replacement medication (given through eye drops twice per day). It is the hormone she is lacking that makes the urine. It is helping a little but we do not know how much. We are working with her to find out what is the best dosage for her. The medication is about $120 per month. What is my personality like? All that sounds frightening and it is but there is more to Buckles than bad plumbing. Buckles is spunky, friendly and loving. She is energetic and must have a fenced in yard to run in. She gets along with other dogs and cats - and would be a great playmate to another dog her size or larger. Buckles is eager to please and bonds quickly. Buckles does have a "house training" issue only because of her condition. For someone who is retired and is home all the time, her house training isn't much of a problem. She must be taken outside every two hours, and her house training is basically controlled. She would love a house with a doggie door. She goes to the door in her foster home if she needs to go out. She wears diapers if her foster mom is going out more than 2 hours. Buckles cannot be deprived of water as it can be fatal to her. How I act when I first meet new people: Happy, friendly and gregarious. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? Strong personality Weight: Est 25 lbs Height: Est 15" What is my personality like? Timon has now been in our care for a year and a half. We have watched this fella grow like a wildflower. When he first came into our rescue, he was untouchable. He was grouchy, grumpy and flat out mean! Of course, who could blame him... he was dumped at a high kill facility by his family because they "didn't want him." Over the months we have given him a lot of space, and he has been very obedient and learned our routine well. Just recently we took him out of his comfort zone and let him live in our of our offices, which is a lot quieter with more one on one attention. He is really a GREAT boy once he gets to know you. He has established a light bond with one of our employees and he is just fine with her. Given some time, Timon is going to be a wonderful companion dog for someone. He is house trained, does great with other animals of all sizes, and is crate trained. He walks great on a leash and loves to go for a car ride. Timon does have to be sedation groomed, however if the right, patient groomer would try him...we think he could make progress with that. He is okay being groomed everywhere except his face. Timon loves toys and he really, really loves treats. He is food motivated, he is calm and well mannered. He needs someone with experience, and an adult only home because he is known to snap if he gets aggravated. Who I am seeking: Timon is seeking a couple without children who is willing to work though some of his behavioral problems. Someone who will help teach him that most people are kind and can be his buddy. Age: est 10 years old Please understand that these are rescued dogs, and sometimes their ages are only a guess. Posted Breed: Hound / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Meet this joyous, loyal girl.. Deanna! Thank you for your interest in a rescued dog. Our descriptions contain all that we know about this dog today. We'll update as more information is known. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture. Are you looking to adopt within the next 30 days? If so please visit our webpage at www.carolinapoodlerescue.org and complete the application. You'll find it in the menu on the left hand side. Please drop a note to applications@carolinapoodlerescue.org with your name, address and phone # and email. We'll add you to our mailing list. thanks the CPR Adoption team Date into Rescue: 12/27/15 Reason for being in rescue: Found as a stray Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? No Weight: est 40 lbs Height: growing Adoption Fee: $200 Fence needed? Preferred, she needs good exercise daily. What kind of home would be best for me? Deanna is a happy, goofy big puppy! She is friendly and loves everyone. She would do great in many different environments. Although we have not seen her around kids, we feel she would be a great addition to a family with kids; she keeps us on our toes! She is very loving and affectionate, and pretty calm for a puppy. She and her brother are best friends and we think she would do great with another dog in the home. Deanna recently spent one-on-one time with a caregiver and he shared: "Deanna needs a lot of work on a leash. She will chew on them. She loved playing outside. While inside she was mostly focused on playing with the crated dogs. She is a serious love bug and will have no problem becoming connected to an adopter." UPDATE: 10/11/2016 We cant help but wonder why Miss Deanna is still here! This girl has made huge improvement since she has came in. She no longer pulls on the leash unless something catches her attention. She can sit on command is highly treat motivated so teaching her commands would be easy with time. Deanna is dog selective.. she only likes certain dogs and she must be the leader with her doggy friends. When she is with other dogs, she is a completely different dog and becomes a robust, playful dog. Alone, she just wants to sniff everywhere while being by your side. Deanna is extremely loyal and can be your constant best friend if you let her. How I act when I first meet new people: Friendly House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. My age: est birthday 4/17/2015 Please note - we do not ship dogs. Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler (medium coat). Meet Jasmine (aka Smarty Pants)! Breed: Australian Blue Heeler Gender: Female Adoption Fee: $200 Date into Rescue: 12/22/15 Reason for being in rescue: Found as a stray Foster location: Harriet in Greenville, SC Special Needs? No Weight: Est 30 lbs Height: Est 15" Fence Needed: Yes, absolutely What is my personality like? Jasmine is a young dog who needs a strong leader and an experienced blue heeler owner. She is a pure bred heeler and needs a job! Jasmine is high energy, true to her breed, and loves to catch sticks, tennis balls, or her favorite - a Frisbee. She knows how to fetch, and will bring whatever you throw for her back to you. Jasmine absolutely loves playing with toys. S he knows how to walk on a leash but really needs a harness. She really enjoys going for walks and see what is going on in the world. She has done great just walking along side her foster's side. Jasmine is such a smart girl. Her foster uses a whistle or clicker and rewards with a treat - Jasmine has responded very well to this positive training and learns her commands very quickly. She came to us with some basic obedience skills such as Sit, Crate, and Come and has been working on more like Leave It. She is fully crate trained and will go right into her crate when you say "Crate". She is still working on some typical puppy behaviors, but has come a long way working on those with her foster. For example, Jasmine used to have a bad habit of "nipping." This was not in any way out of aggression but rather excitement and her herding instinct. She has now overcome this while in the care of her foster mom! Jasmine is also a very affectionate girl. She likes to be petted and have her ears rubbed and tickled. She is a good dog! She and her foster dog sister play and play and play!! Her adopter will have to have time for her, patience, and a fenced yard. If given the chance, she can jump - but not six feet. In short she needs active owners - ideally someone who likes to hike, do agility and other activities. She will be a great dog in the right setting. Her foster home also has 4 cats which Jasmine has learned to tolerate. Who I am seeking: An experienced dog owner, preferably with this particular breed. Someone who is home more than they're not. How I act when I first meet new people: Friendly House trained? Still working on house training. The foster is utilizing Jasmine's crate training and working on getting her house trained in one room. She strongly believes that Jasmine will catch on to house training with a solid routine and regular mental and physical exercise. Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. Age: est birth date 12/2013 Please understand that these are rescued dogs, and sometimes their ages are only a guess. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture, and not to discriminate against older dogs. You never know which dog will steal your heart when you meet them! Posted Breed: Great Dane (short coat). Meet Stella! Breed: Great Dane Gender: Female Date into Rescue: 05/02/2014 Reason for being in rescue : Stella's previous owners surrendered her to the shelter after she developed tumors, likely from being bred too much. Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? yes - behavior Weight: Est 100 lbs Height: Est 30" at the shoulder Age: We think Stella was born around May of 2010 What can I say about a big spotty girl with lot and lots of attitude. Stella came to CPR because of her health but she's still with us because of her behavior. Stella can't be trusted with people she does not know. That's the key - if Stella knows you and you're a firm and experienced handler, she's your best friend. If not, watch out. Stella has many good qualities and is a fun dog to be around if she has accepted you. She is stunningly good looking, a large girl with a large heart for those she loves and trusts. Stella loves toys and she can be found collecting so she can keep them tidy and neat. She's a hoarder but not really for any caregiver can walk in at any time and help themselves to her toy collection and she's happy to share. Leave it laying on the kennel floor and she'll fetch it and put it back where it belongs, in her run. She's a very neat girl. Stella loves big, fluffy beds but she also has been known to get so excited she eats the darn thing. We go through beds with her. Right now, Stella is sleeping on a big Kuranda bed with a fluffy comforter recycled from Goodwill. That seems to be working for her. Stella loves to play with other dogs and she'll romp and play just like a standard poodle and she can run and jump, wrestle and roll with the best of them. Stella has never met a dog she didn't like and she especially seems to like poodles and doodles. It's people that drive her a bit crazy and we don't know why. We've had her checked from top to toe and no physical issues. She eats grain free food to keep her skin fresh and healthy but other than that, she is as healthy now as she can possibly be. Eye sight was suspected but it's just fine. So is her hearing. But there is something about certain people that sets her off and when that happens, Stella uses her teeth. We've only seen one incident of aggression out of Stella here that was short and did not result in any damage. All the caregivers love her. We placed her once and she came back with a history of biting and biting hard. When that happens we stop, we observe and we try to figure out what happened for there is always a trigger, you just need to figure out what it is. So far it seems to be somewhat resource guarding. For the rest, I don't know. Stella is adoptable to the person with a ton of experience and a firm grasp of doggie discipline. They must understand that if they give this girl direction and focus, she will give them back a devotion that will be unlike any they have ever seen. If not - then trouble will happen. If interested in adopting Stella, you must have a fenced in yard prefer 6' privacy and one other large dog. No children under 18 years old. No cats.

None Weight: est 30 lbs Height: est 17" at shoulder Adoption Fee: $200 Fence needed? No, although he would really love a fence! What kind of home would be best for me? Cabarrus would thrive best in a home with an active family. He is young and full of energy and always on the go! Overall he is friendly with everyone that he has met, and he would likely do well in many different home environments. What is my personality like? Cabarrus is very playful and happy guy. He is well crate trained, however he much prefers to be out loose with you. He has a puppy-like energy but is well mannered when he needs to be. We are working on his leash training, and he is doing well so far. Cabarrus can be picky about his canine companions and would fare best being the only spoiled dog in the house! None known Weight: 8 Height: 10" Adoption Fee: $200 Fence needed? No What kind of home would be best for me? Sadly we do not have much history on Sabrina, however if her behavior is indicative of her past...it was not a positive one. I will never forget the day we picked her up. We were actually going to the shelter to pick up another few dogs, and we saw Sabrina. She was hairless, crusty and absolutely petrified....and of course, on the Euthanasia list. Touching her bare-handed was not an option. We got her back to the farm where we started making progress. We treated her skin for allergies and it took several months but she has finally grown a full coat back!! She is great with other dogs and has turned into a happy gal. She has also done well walking on a leash for our caregivers! Sabrina needs someone who is familiar with chihuahuas as she has a few quirks. Once she trusts you, she is a breeze to deal with. Sabrina only snaps if she gets very frightened (which happens less and less as time goes on). She has never actually bitten anyone. Sabrina is a sweetheart who is full of life and would really thrive with some one on one attention! We hope to find her a forever family, as almost 10 months has gone by and she is now ready! UPDATE 9/16/2016: Sabrina is becoming more confident everyday. She is such a sweet girl, and does not have one mean bone in her body. Sometimes when you pick her her up she yelps, more so out of fear than anything else. Once she gets acquainted with you, she wants nothing but love and affection. She gets along great with her fellow doggy friends and usually just lays low. She is very polite, she doesn't bark much nor does she get in any kind of scruffles with other dogs.
