Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed (short coat). I’m a very special boy who has already become a shelter favorite with everyone he meets! Though I might be a little older than your average shelter doggie, I have personality for days! When I first arrived at Second Chance, I was missing most of my fur from a skin infection, and was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease. A few more tests determined that I’m actually Cushings free! I do have a little bit of arthritis in my spine and right knee, and seem to be mostly deaf, but I get around just fine, and manage very well with an anti-inflammatory. Now that my skin feels better, my beautiful white locks are coming back in, making me extra handsome! I know once you meet me you’ll see for yourself- I am a perfect little guy, who’s looking for his perfect human! Age: 10 years, Weight: 12.6 pounds ADOPTION PROCESS: If you are interested in adopting an animal from Second Chance SPCA, you will need to come to our adoption center during business hours. A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Beagle / Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hello! My name is Godiva. I came to Second Chance after landing at Dallas Animal Services as a stray. My time there was brief, but terrifying, and I'm so glad I was brought here to relax. I was found on the streets of Dallas with my little friend Mozzarella. We are very close, and would love to go home together - but I think I could be best friends with any other friendly dog, too. I would actually love to have a dog friend (just no cats, please)! I take a lot of comfort in having friends to lean on, literally and figuratively :) But enough about other dogs, let's talk more about me. I'm an independent little one with quite a spirited attitude, and I definitely know how to get my cuddle on! I love breakfast and dinner time more than anything in the world, and I promise to keep your kitchen floors squeaky clean. If you've ever wanted a best friend, portable vacuum cleaner, miniature foot heater and home alarm system all in one, I'm the girl for you! Head down to the shelter and take me home with you today! ADOPTION PROCESS: Adopters must visit with an adoption counselor and complete an application. Same-day adoptions are approved based on the best matched home for each pet. Posted Breed: Retriever / Corgi / Mixed (short coat). Oh, hello... You came to visit me? Well, I love you already! I grew up as an outdoor dog before I was relinquished to a local shelter. I spent a few days in a cold, lonely kennel, dreaming of what a couch might feel like, or a loving touch of a human hand - and that's when Second Chance came and picked me up! They promised I would never be tethered up outside again, or left to fend for myself against predators and weather extremes. They told me I would soon find a forever family who appreciates my sweet, gentle nature; a family who will satisfy my appetite for endless tummy rubs and soft nose kisses. They said I was a perfect dog: quick to trust, good with all other animals, the perfect size and sugar-sweet. All I want in life is to curl up in a warm bed, and to attach myself to your hip so we can face our lives (and beds, and snacks) together. Are you looking for your velcro dog? Stop looking, because I'm waiting for you. ADOPTION PROCESS: Adopters must visit with an adoption counselor and complete an application. Life hasn't been too kind to me so far, and I'm at Second Chance with my sister, Jackie, in hopes we can move into greener pastures. When I arrived here, I was so scared that I would just hide in the corner with my sister all day. But after a few days of TLC, I have really come out of my shell; now I like to come right up to you and say hi with my tail wagging a million miles per minute! I think my ideal home would be somewhere safe and laid back, with lots of love and treats for both my sister and me. I'm more of a curl-up-on-the-couch dog than a climb-every-mountain dog. Take me home with you, and I promise to warm your bed and your heart! ADOPTION PROCESS: Adopters must visit with an adoption counselor and complete an application. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Hello, human! My name is Jackie, and I'm as excited to meet you as you are to meet me! I came to Second Chance with my sister, Roxie, to find a home that's going to treat us right. I've had sort of a rough start so far, and I was pretty withdrawn when I arrived here. However, after a little reassurance and some soft petting from the nice people here, I've realized that people can be pretty great! In fact, I think I'd like to go home with some pretty great people of my own - ideally with my sister, Jackie. We are very bonded, as we've spent our whole lives together. We make a great home defense team! If you bring us home, I promise to always keep your kitchen floors clean and free of dropped morsels; think of how much less cleaning you'll have to do! Okay, I know you're sold, so I'll just wait here while you fill out the adoption paperwork... :) ADOPTION PROCESS: Adopters must visit with an adoption counselor and complete an application.
