Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed (short coat). I’m a very special boy who has already become a shelter favorite with everyone he meets! Though I might be a little older than your average shelter doggie, I have personality for days! When I first arrived at Second Chance, I was missing most of my fur from a skin infection, and was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease. A few more tests determined that I’m actually Cushings free! I do have a little bit of arthritis in my spine and right knee, and seem to be mostly deaf, but I get around just fine, and manage very well with an anti-inflammatory. Now that my skin feels better, my beautiful white locks are coming back in, making me extra handsome! I know once you meet me you’ll see for yourself- I am a perfect little guy, who’s looking for his perfect human! A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Lhasa Apso / Shih Tzu / Mixed (medium coat). I might be a little older than your average shelter doggie, but my age also gives me a few advantages over the younger doggies. I’m crate trained, a gentleman on the leash, and a quiet guy until dinnertime rolls around. That’s usually when you’ll see me get the most excited! I was surrendered to a large city shelter in pretty rough shape, but my friends at Second Chance cleaned me up with a haircut and made sure I got the right meds for my itchy skin. Wouldn’t you know it, I settled in here right away! I’m friendly with other doggies, and LOVE to hang out next to people, sneaking in some belly rubs when I can. I’m ready to find a home where I can spend the rest of my days, and I have plenty of years of love left in me. Won’t you come see me today? If you know terriers at all, you won’t be surprised to hear I’m a high-energy girl. Though I’ve already had some basic training, my energy level can make me a handful for some homes. I’d do best leading an active lifestyle, with an owner than can make time to keep up with my training. When I’m bored, I tend to turn into a troublemaker, but as long as you keep me engaged, I’m eager to learn and happy to go wherever you do! I can “sit” and “down”, and am working on getting accustomed to a gentle leader too. I know I have plenty to offer the right home, and I can’t wait to show my new family what a great doggie I can be! Rescued as orphans barely old enough to be away from mom, my siblings and I were covered head to toe in mange. It was a long road to treatment, but after many weeks of treatment, I am finally free and clear of it! I’ve spent the last couple of months learning all about how to be a good puppy, and am already accustomed to both a leash and a crate. I’m a small girl now, but have some growing left to do. I’m searching for a home that can keep up with my training and teach me all of the things a good pup should know, and I’m ready to meet my new family today! Won’t you come meet me today? Though I was originally a very shy boy when I arrived, it didn't take me very long at all to open up. I'm friendly with other doggies, and already figuring out how to walk nicely on a leash too! As my name might suggest, I’m quite the ladies man around here, but you’d never have guessed I’d have so many new volunteer friends if you’d seen me before I arrived. I was rescued from a pretty rotten situation and terrified out of my mind in a city shelter, when Second Chance met me- all I could do was lie in my kennel and tremble uncontrollably. In a quieter atmosphere, it became apparent that not only was I a beautiful and affectionate boy, but that my tremors might be something neurological. I take one medication daily to help control my shakes, and I have some near sighted vision issues, but I never let that interfere with my play or my happy personality! I’ve found I may not be able to catch a ball, but I can sure chase one, and I love to run racetrack circles in the backyard during free time! I’m a very special boy who deserves a wonderful home full of love, I know I can return it tenfold when I meet my lucky forever family. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). If you’d had a chance to meet me when I first arrived, I think you’d be impressed by how social I’ve become! I was rescued from the largest city shelter around, where I was fearful and overwhelmed by all of the noises and smells. After arriving at Second Chance less than a month ago, I’ve proven what a sweet and loving dog I can be. No longer a nervous mess, I may still play shy when I first meet you. I’m sure if you spend a little time with me you’ll see it’s all an act! I’m the best lap dog around, and I’ll find any open lap I can to snuggle up in! I’m well behaved with other dogs, a gentle girl on the leash, and love to give kisses when we cuddle. I have so many great qualities I know I’ll make an amazing dog for a lucky family. Do you think I could be the one for you? Age: 2 years, Weight: 12 pounds ADOPTION PROCESS: If you are interested in adopting an animal from Second Chance SPCA, you will need to come to our adoption center during business hours. Posted Breed: Border Collie / Cattle Dog / Mixed (short coat). If you’re looking for a dog that is both beautiful and sweet, I might be just the one for you! I have big ears that give my face a dopey look, and beautiful blue eyes that look right into your heart! You’ll know by my name that I love to sing, and whenever the tornado sirens sound, I’ll usually join in with a howl or two! I’m a playful and smart young girl who would love an active lifestyle, but I’m also mellow enough to lounge around the house with you too. I’m sure to make a great dog for one lucky home, and I can’t wait to meet my new family! I sure hope they come find me soon!
