Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed (short coat). I’m a very special boy who has already become a shelter favorite with everyone he meets! Though I might be a little older than your average shelter doggie, I have personality for days! When I first arrived at Second Chance, I was missing most of my fur from a skin infection, and was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease. A few more tests determined that I’m actually Cushings free! I do have a little bit of arthritis in my spine and right knee, and seem to be mostly deaf, but I get around just fine, and manage very well with an anti-inflammatory. Now that my skin feels better, my beautiful white locks are coming back in, making me extra handsome! I know once you meet me you’ll see for yourself- I am a perfect little guy, who’s looking for his perfect human! Age: 10 years, Weight: 12.6 pounds ADOPTION PROCESS: If you are interested in adopting an animal from Second Chance SPCA, you will need to come to our adoption center during business hours. Appointments are not required. Adopters must visit with an adoption counselor, and complete an application process. Adoptions are approved based on the best matched home for each pet. We reserve the right to reject an application based on the needs of the pet. Adopters must live in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Adopters must be at least 21 years-old. ADOPTION FEES: $250 for puppies under 6 months of age and $200 for dogs older than 6 months; Includes spay/neuter, age appropriate vaccinations, microchip, fecal and heartworm test. All dogs are current on heartworm and flea preventative. $125 for kittens under 6 months of age and $100 for cats older than 6 months. A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

I’m still a big old puppy, and I have plenty of energy for play and exercise. I’m working hard to learn all of the things a good puppy should know, like how to walk like a lady on the leash and not to jump up on new friends. I’m a pretty smart girl, so I’m already starting to figure out my groove here in the shelter! I would do best in a family that can keep up with my training and make sure I get plenty of playtime, too! I’m ready to find my new home today- won’t you say you’ll come meet me? My brother Roger and I were found roaming around together, and both of us were in pretty rough shape. I’m the taller of the two of us, and my lanky legs made me look even skinnier than I am! I’m already starting to fill out to a healthy weight, and am figuring out the routine here at the shelter very well. I’m the “playful” brother, and you can often find me making mischief and trying to get other doggies to join in! I’m never a shy guy, but I am a lovey dovey guy once you get to know me! I was covered head to toe in ticks when I arrived, and it was clear I hadn’t been well tended to in a long time. Now that I’ve gotten all cleaned up, I’m looking and feeling like a new dog! I went straight to foster care after I was rescued, where my foster family went to work trying to fatten me up a little bit! I fit in perfectly with the other dogs in the home, and would make a great companion for another dog. Second Chance learned after saving me that I was heartworm positive too. Luckily my friends here at the shelter have already put me through treatment, and I’m happy to say I’m feeling better than every! I’m gaining weight well, and starting to feel better, too, now that I’ve got the right medication for my hypothyroidism. Now all I need is a great family to adopt me, and I’ll be the happiest shepherd around! I might be a little older than your average shelter pup, but I know I have so much left to offer a family. Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Looking for a dog with plenty of kisses to share? I’m certainly your girl! If you know terriers at all, you won’t be surprised to hear I’m a high-energy girl. Though I’ve already had some basic training, my energy level can make me a handful for some homes. I’d do best leading an active lifestyle, with an owner than can make time to keep up with my training. When I’m bored, I tend to turn into a troublemaker, but as long as you keep me engaged, I’m eager to learn and happy to go wherever you do! I can “sit” and “down”, and am working on getting accustomed to a gentle leader too. I know I have plenty to offer the right home, and I can’t wait to show my new family what a great doggie I can be! Won’t you come see me today?
