Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed (short coat). I’m a very special boy who has already become a shelter favorite with everyone he meets! Though I might be a little older than your average shelter doggie, I have personality for days! When I first arrived at Second Chance, I was missing most of my fur from a skin infection, and was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease. A few more tests determined that I’m actually Cushings free! I do have a little bit of arthritis in my spine and right knee, and seem to be mostly deaf, but I get around just fine, and manage very well with an anti-inflammatory. Now that my skin feels better, my beautiful white locks are coming back in, making me extra handsome! I know once you meet me you’ll see for yourself- I am a perfect little guy, who’s looking for his perfect human! Age: 10 years, Weight: 12.6 pounds ADOPTION PROCESS: If you are interested in adopting an animal from Second Chance SPCA, you will need to come to our adoption center during business hours. Appointments are not required. Adopters must visit with an adoption counselor, and complete an application process. Adoptions are approved based on the best matched home for each pet. We reserve the right to reject an application based on the needs of the pet. Adopters must live in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Adopters must be at least 21 years-old. Renters must provide proof of pet deposit and/or written permission by landlord to have a pet. ADOPTION FEES: $250 for puppies under 6 months of age and $200 for dogs older than 6 months; Includes spay/neuter, age appropriate vaccinations, microchip, fecal and heartworm test. All dogs are current on heartworm and flea preventative. $125 for kittens under 6 months of age and $100 for cats older than 6 months. Includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchip, fecal and FeLV / FIV test. All cats are current on heartworm and flea preventative. A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Hound / Pointer / Mixed (short coat). If you’re looking for a good and handsome boy to hang out with you all day, I just might be the doggie for you! I have a little bit of separation anxiety, and I prefer to spend my time in the presence of a human companion. I still have lots of puppy energy in me, and will need a family that can handle a little goofiness now and then. I love to play, but also am enjoying learning all of the commands a good doggie should know! I’m hoping to find someone that can keep up with my training, and exercise. I am very well behaved with other doggies, and have even made a few pals here at Second Chance since arriving! I would do best in a home that has owned doggies before, as I can be a little rambunctious when I get really jazzed about something. All of my antics are in good fun, and I hope my new family as happy-go-lucky as I am! Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). I am a spunky little guy, and you will be able to tell as soon as you meet me what a character I am! I have a scruffy little face with an adorable underbite that makes me look like I have a great smile! I would do best in a quieter home without small children, as I sometimes get fairly excited when there is a lot of activity. I was mighty suspicious of the leash at first, and still sometimes don’t quite know what to think about it, but am getting better and better each day! I do very well with other small dogs, and have met many canine friends since arriving. While I do have a heart murmur that requires daily medication, I know that I am worth a little extra care, and I’m just waiting to find a special person that knows it too!
