A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

(Out of State) 8-25-16 Mya is returned to rescue. 6-12-16 Mya has a pending adoption. 7-9-15 Mya comes into rescue as an owner surrender, due to her being deaf and finding out after the fact that she is three legged due to an injury at 3 months old which the breeder did not treat. The owner did not know she was deaf when she got her, supposedly. So then, the rescue only gets part of the story as well. Then the paperwork and x-rays are withheld. It seems that FHO surgery was done at 8 months old. Yet, it did not heal correctly and no rehab was done. So, at 14 months old, the rescue had the FHO Repair surgery done for her. Finding out the morning of the surgery, that she also has a luxating patella, grade 4, which (according to that particular vet) will also need repair after the hip is healed. The rescue had two more opinions, after her FHO surgery, and both of those vets (who we have previously worked with and trust more than the one(s) who did the surgery) agreed that taking off the knee cap and reattaching (because of the previous neglect) could make her unable to use her leg at all and make it worse. Therefore, we are opting to let her be the dog as she is very happy now. Our adoption fee ($250) covers the age appropriate spay / neutering, heart worm testing, rabies, distemper combo, microchipping and any other necessary medical that a dog may need. Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler (medium coat). Please contact Monica R Larner (cowdogrescue@gmail.com), (989) 330-5147 for more information about this pet. 11-27-15 I was told that Jack's owner was in the hospital and did not know for how long. I offered to temporarily take care of Jack, and had a volunteer bring him to rescue. When I called later that day, the adopter answered the phone, surprisingly. So the gist of the conversation was that the adopter did not know if they could properly care for him. I did offer food assistance, yet there has been no reply. 10-15-12 Jack has been adopted! 9-29-12 Jack has a pending adoption. 6-9-12 Jack comes back into rescue, due to his acting up when people would come to the home. Jack was worked with and the adopter did not feel that Jack could be trusted around the grandchildren. Jack tries to "buffalo" people by staring them down, then chewing on their pant legs. 4-28-12 Jack has a pending adoption. March 2012, Jack may have been abandoned. Jack has been here with us since last July due to his owner losing his job and place to live. The owner had found a job where he moved to with hopes of bringing Jack with him when he found a place to live. We were told that when he found a place to live that there was another male dog in the home, which was not going to work out for Jack. We were told that the owner would be finding his own place so that Jack could come back. Well, Christmas came and went without a visit to Jack. The new year rolled around and I asked that Jack go back with his owner before March 1st, so that I can continue to help the shelter dogs that need to come into rescue. So, on 2-15-12, I reminded the owner that March 1st was coming up. He said that he was moving to San Antonio, TX and had found a place for Jack. I asked him to find out what vaccinations were needed for him to move there, and I would get those done for him. Since that time there has been NO response back to my voice mails or text. All I can think is that Jack has been abandoned. Jack is looking to be the only dog in the home, and he will need an ACD experienced strong leader. --------------------------------------------------------------- August 2007, Jack (RED)aka J.D. aka Tuffy, was adopted out in January 2007 from another ACD Rescue in Michigan, then the adopter took him to the shelter. The other rescue refused to take him back and told the adopter to take him to the shelter. The shelter contacted us, and we went to bail him out. We were told that he was fighting with the female cattle dog in the home. We were also told that he escaped and attacked the neighborhood dogs. J.D. is extremely friendly with people. The people at the shelter did not have any problems with him. When I met him he made right up to me. When we got him home, we introduced him on neutral ground with our personal ACD female. No problems there. We then put him into a long run over 100 feet long with dogs on both side of him. J.D. did not show any posturing towards fighting. We don't think that J.D. is a bad dog, he needs a strong leader to steer him in the right direction.

Spatter's Personal Page: http://aucado.hoppingmedia.com/?p=701 9-28-11 Spatter is HW NEGATIVE after her treatment. Spatter's HW positive treatment, Immiticide, was given 6-12-11 and 6-13-11. 5-30-11 Spatter tested HW positive. She has been on a pre-treatment regimen. 5-23-11 Spatter is an adult female heeler who was surrendered today, due to not behaving at her new home after getting her off of Craigs List. Spatter expects to be in trouble, as you can see by her picture, she does not want to even look my way. Spatter was brought here on a baling twine, no collar, no leash, no love. We were told that she is about 4 years old, has been spayed, and up to date on shots. Yet, there is no "proof" of any of these claims. Spatter had no training, no boundaries, and no routine. She "herded" the children, tried to herd the goats, tried to get into the chicken coop and chased (caught) a kitten in the yard. Spatter seems to be voice correctable, which tells us that she can be worked with to make her a good dog. Please contact Monica R Larner (cowdogrescue@gmail.com), (989) 330-5147 for more information about this pet.  7-20-15 Nickolai comes into rescue from a Detroit Shelter, where he was “urgent” because he was not able to be moved to the “adoption building”. (Yet, within a couple of hours of Susan meeting him, on Sunday, he was whisked away to the adoptable building.) While I have not received his owner surrender paperwork, the rumor going around was that he was on Craig’s List a couple of times, and each time surrendered. He was labeled as having separation anxiety, which if you stop and think about it is understandable. All of the bouncing / moving / dumping / whisking him away to another building when I told them that Sue would be getting him in the next 24 hours, did not do him any favors. 7-30-15 Nickolai had complete vetting done, since nothing was done for him. (Why would people pass around on Craig’s List an intact deaf ACD?) He was a cryptorchid, which caused him to have a 2 hour surgery to “find” the other one. He is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, heartworm tested, etc. He is under weight, yet finally eating better quality foods. He is on mega-dose of antibiotics due to the invasive surgery, and he seems much more happy now! After he is released from his surgery restrictions, I will start introducing him to other dogs.    Our adoption fee ($250) covers the age appropriate spay / neutering, heart worm testing, rabies, distemper combo, microchipping and any other necessary medical that a dog may need. Please consider a rescue that comes to you with all of the routine medical done. Need to find the application? Please visit our new website at AuCaDo Australian Cattle Dog Rescue Michigan Contact Monica at (989) 330-5147, Director of AuCaDo Rescue, for questions about adoption process. If you are looking for a certain rescue, let me know, as we always have rescues waiting to come here. PLEASE NOTE: AuCaDo Rescue is not a public shelter. This dog is being fostered in a private home until adoption. Prospective adopters who have submitted an accepted application and completed a telephone interview are welcome to schedule an appointment to travel to meet the dog. If approved for adoption, a deposit will hold the dog until a meeting or transport is arranged. AuCaDo Rescue does welcome out of state adoptions. We require an approved application, phone interview, photos and willingness to help with transport. AuCaDo Rescue is now located in Michigan and Ohio.
