Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Laney was turned into us by a concerned citizen. He found Laney but could not find the owner and didn't have the heart to turn her into a kill shelter. Laney can be selective about the dogs she likes to play with. 9/4/2016 Dog For A Day: We took Laney out on Saturday and let her sleep over through Sunday. She was beautifully behaved! She walks well on a leash without excessive pulling. She passed other dogs on the street without barking, pulling, or getting overly excited. We have 2 dogs plus 2 other foster dogs. She played well with our 1 resident dog who is equally matched in size. And I mean played. Running all over the back yard and jumping up on each other in play. She sniffed and wagged her tail at our other resident dog who is a Westie, old, deaf and blind. We did not associate her with the 2 foster dogs we currently have. They did see each other on opposite sides of a glass door, again, without much excitement. No aggressiveness shown. Just tail wagging and interest. We also have 2 cats. She was curious but not aggressive with them either. She loves to lay next to you, roll over and have her belly rubbed. She listens pretty well. Initially she is very excited to see you and jumps up, almost like she's afraid you will leave her. But once she realizes you are there to love her she will sit and let you rub her belly. She puts her head down in sweet submission as you approach her. She loves laying on the bed! She seems to love everyone she meets and is not fearful or aggressive with newcomers in any way. She is a wonderful darling who would make a great, loving and loyal companion. ----------------------------- Dog 4 A Day UPDATE : She was a fairly calm dog and really associated well around people. She liked personal/physical contact with the kids. We took her to the Baldwin Park dog park, but kept her leashed except for a special "small dog" area that had no dogs at the time. We felt that because she hadn't been trained with us that an open leashless environment would not be prudent. She did interact with some dogs, but her excitement level seemed to escalate quickly. Separating the two dogs and sitting quietly with Lainey for a few minutes rubbing her shoulders or a reassuring hand on her side seemed to work well. The return trip from the park pooped her out a bit. She was a nice dog and with consistent training would do well. --------------------------------------------- Laney is a very loving dog, she loves to cuddle and sleep next to you. She also follows you where ever you go! She doesn't like to be alone, even when she goes outside. She just wants to be by your side! Her absolute favorite thing to do is play fetch. When she retrieves the ball she hops and pounces on it, it's adorable to watch.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Foxy Lady *F...

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Sanford, FL
Posted Breed: Terrier (short coat). Foxy Lady was found in the Casselberry area by a police officer. FOSTER UPDATE: Foxy Lady is an amazing dog, to say the least. She is extremely afraid of the vacuum cleaner and any similar loud noises. We took her to Downtown Sanford last night and Foxy was very well-behaved; she loved to greet everyone that walked by with kisses and of course, sat by us and begged for food when we ate, but was not overbearing or rude about it. When we told her to lie down she did and gave us puppy dog eyes until we ordered her some chicken. She walks well on a leash if you tell her to "Leave It". She is obedient, loves to please, very food motivated, and knows her basic commands. Foxy is a fence jumper so needs to be watched when outside in a fenced in yard. She loves to go for walks! She has an obsession with frisbees and tennis balls and loves to play fetch (loves bones and you won’t see her until the bone has vanished). She will chase the ball for hours but will make your work for it to get the ball back until you ignore her then she’ll drop it for you. Foxy Lady is such a happy, sweet girl, and needs a great loving owner that will make sure she knows who’s boss. She likes kids and does well when they approach her but she is very strong - she may knock them right over when she plays so would need to go to a home with older children. Foxy is 50 pounds of pure muscle and thinks she is a little Yorkie - so be warned - she LOVES to cuddle and will try and get as close as she can when laying down or watching TV. Foxy is an awesome dog and if we could we would adopt her in a heartbeat! Don’t miss out on this amazing girl! STAFF UPDATE: Foxy Lady sometimes gets to hang out in the office! She loves to greet visitors. She's been really good about not chewing on the furniture, and she doesn't take things off the desk. I moved the trash can outside, because she does like to take out the papers. But I think it's more of a game with her--I see that tail wagging! She is very friendly and loves to play, but again, she doesn't seem to realize how big and strong she is, so she can get a bit rough. She LOVES to play fetch, although trying to get the ball back from her to throw it again can be a challenge!

      rescue
      Breed: Beagle
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Sanford, FL
Posted Breed: Beagle / Hound (short coat). Beasley was the biggest pup of the litter. He and the other pups were surrendered when their family could not find them homes and their mom just could not take care of them anymore. Unfortunately for them, their "family" was a back yard breeder. They were living in a pen in the yard until one of our volunteers came and offered to take the pups off their hands and find proper homes. This is exactly what we did! They are very sweet and loving and will make sturdy and fun companions for your family. Because of their past treatment, Beasley would do best in a home with older or no children as he could nip at little hands. We are working on this behavior with one of our trainers, but for now, Beasley prefers not to have small kids around him.

      Chasity

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: Sanford, FL
Posted Breed: Terrier / Hound (short coat). Chasity was owner surrendered. Chasity's former owner obtained Chasity as a gift from her brother. She realized she was not prepared to care for a young puppy, and in addition, she found out she had allergies. Per the former owner, Chasity is housetrained, happy and playful, likes baths, and both dry and canned food. She will playfully nip when she gets excited. She is all up to date and ready for her forever home! Chasity is an awesome dog. She needs a strong owner that is willing to teach her some manners. We don't feel she was given the direction she needed when she was a puppy. One of our staff members takes Chasity out for long walks and he states that Chasity would do best in a home with an active couple or single person. A fenced in yard for her would be a must because she requires a lot of exercising. She is crate trained here at the shelter. She loves to get attention, so if you work long hours, that would not benefit her with the exercise she requires. As for other dogs, she is selective. Patience, maybe some professional training and dedication with lots of love will get Chasity on the right track. She is an amazing dog that would make a great pet.

She is very particular about the other dogs she likes so she would would be best as an only dog with a careful, aware owner since she is picky about other pets. rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Sanford, FL
Posted Breed: Terrier / Labrador Retriever (short coat). Dallas and her puppies were owner-surrendered to one of our volunteers. Dallas was bred on purpose so the other owner of the male dog could get a dog that looked like his un-neutered male. Not one looked like his dog, so they surrendered Dallas and all the puppies. All of the puppies have been adopted and mom is left looking for a home and love. Dallas loves people and is very affectionate with them. She never wants to leave your side. She loves to play outside, get belly rubs, and give kisses. She is very friendly with everyone she meets and just wants to be loved. She would probably be best as an only dog with a careful, aware owner since she is picky about other pets. She is a very sweet girl. She is a staff favorite at the shelter.

      rescue
      Breed: Boxer
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Sanford, FL
Posted Breed: Boxer / Hound (short coat). Cami is affectionate and plays with dogs in her foster home. She likes to sunbathe in the backyard, run and play , enjoys walks, is house and crate trained, cuddling on her couch and sharing a spot with Darlene. Cami needs time to adjust to a new home, but once she does, she's quiet and wonderful. The best environment for Cami would be a calm home with adults only who can work with her to better introduce her to new people and animals, she becomes protective. She would be a great dog for apartment living or to travel in a motor home.

      Location: Sanford, FL
Posted Breed: Terrier (short coat). Weston was found tied up outside after one of the foster's tenants moved out; he lived his life tied up outside. Foster Update: Weston is good on a leash, although he sometimes is headstrong when he sees something he wants to explore. He's great around other dogs. I have another rescue dog living with him and they play and chase each other around the house. When they first met they were barking and playing rough with each other but it was their way of saying hello. Weston needs a yard and lots of chew toys. Keep anything dangerous out of reach because he likes to explore and chew when he's bored. He has a lot of energy since he has experienced freedom from being leash bound most of his life. I walk him in the morning and evening where he's pretty much trained to go outside. He has a nice schedule. Being able to go inside and outside through a doggie door would be ideal. I feed him very high-quality kibble that he loves. He knows how to sit when told. He's very affectionate, even to new people. He will jump on you and lick you and try to sit in your lap. When he wants to go outside he will hum and bark to let you know he's bored, let's go for a walk or he needs to use the bathroom. He needs an active family since he's not a couch potato type dog. Weston is a great dog that would be great with other same size or larger dogs. Great personality and very friendly.

Posted Breed: Rhodesian Ridgeback / Terrier (short coat). Smokey is a sweet little girl who loves to play. She is good with some of our dogs and lets you know what she wants. DOG FOR A DAY UPDATE 4/4/16 : Smokey is a great playmate, who will run with you for hours or play stick all day. She would also benefit from a game of tug of war with a strong rope or toy. She has a natural bounty of energy that she needs to use daily. She is very nice to new people, licking their hand and wagging her tail. She warmed up to me a lot after we went for a good run. She did very well with her male friend Winn Dixie and was so thrilled to be out for a day. Smokey needs an owner who will devote time each day to her exercise needs. She enjoyed the car ride and loved seeing all the exciting things happening around her. She also loves treats !! Just when you think you heard it all, beautiful Smokey was found tied to a tree, Judy was notified and took this sweet girl in.

      Breed: Bull Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Sanford, FL
Posted Breed: Bull Terrier / Hound (short coat). Willow came to us from an owner who couldn't keep her because she got too big. Poor girl looks like a Dane mix but the vet also thinks she could be a Bull Terrier/ Hound mix. It's really hard to tell what the mix is, but she is cute and loving just the same! According to her former owners, she loves to go running, swimming, and chasing the frisbee. She is housebroken and crate trained. FOSTER UPDATE • Appearance Black and white, 86 lbs (slightly overweight) • Energy Level Sleeps most of the time. Energy level peaks in the evenings when she is sometimes looking for attention or play time with ball or Frisbee. • Food Dry kibble, Buffalo Blue, 1-1/2 cups twice a day. • Adaptability Very excited to travel somewhere new but soon after arriving she just wants to leave and go home. • Human Social Skills Friendly with other people, somewhat cautious of men, is afraid of people with canes, baseball bats, sticks in general. • Animal Social Skills She is dog and cat aggressive so she would be best as the only dog. • Obedience Very food motivated and will sit, give paw and lay down when treats are involved. • Training Willow is house trained but she is also let outside quite often during the day. She goes into her crate on her own when we leave the house. • Personality Quirks Willow will get totally airborne to catch a Frisbee in the air or catch a bouncing ball. She will also chase and bite at the water streaming from a garden hose. • Health Willow has a sensitive stomach and may get the runs when her diet is changed or when given certain treats. She also has a seasonal skin disorder that requires prednisone throughout the warm summer months. • Ideal Home Someone home all day, large yard for Frisbee.
