A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog (short coat). Sad Story - Owner Died in Motorcycle Crash! Owners Died in Motorcycle Crash! Mom and Dad went to work and never came back! Barney was cared for by neighbors and then brought to animal control. Very sad story. Barney was left homeless. The friends of the owners called from Florida and told me about Barney's situation and reflected on what a horrible situation he was put in. The owners would never had wanted their baby to go through this. Anyway, they are safe. Barney is 6, a bit of a larger boy, probably 60 pounds, but Barney wants to be in a real forever home. Barney is well mannered, he needs a bit of work on the leash, most likely he was off leash since he is so good off leash and probably didn't ear a leash very often. Please come give Barney a real forever home, he really deserves to be in a home. Barney is in South East Arizona but the foster mom makes trips to Tucson usually on the weekends and occasional trips to Phoenix. 602-316-8919 (no texts please)

Posted Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog (short coat). 6 year old sweet Catahoula Rosie came to Fedwell Farm 4 years ago. Her adopter decided to move into a community that doesn't accept dogs. I really try to screen adopters for this type of irresponsibility, but I guess I failed. Rosie is now 6 years old and super sweet. She is a little pudgy but she has been treated well. She has not been abused in any way. Rosie will be a great dog for walking, hiking or camping. Yet, she is quiet enough that she would be fine in an apartment or townhouse. Please come meet this wonderful girl and give her the real forever home she deserves. Rosie is located in South East Arizona. Her foster mom will attempt to meet potential adopters in Tucson if necessary. 602-316-8919 (no texts please)

Oreo is only 18 months old, he was surrendered by his owner for a move. Oreo is very sweet, he can be a little dog selective at first, but he has gotten along with all dogs at his foster moms home with a little introduction. He is just a little fearful with aggressive male dogs (so am I), but after a correct introduction, they all did well together. He is housebroken has has nice house manners, although he needs a little work about being pushy, he needs to learn to give his humans space, he is a smart boy and is learning quickly. Oreo came from Maricopa County Shelter and he is a very happy boy. He loves his humans and dog friends. Oreo is located in a foster home in south east Arizona. Posted Breed: Bloodhound (short coat). Another Senior BloodHound Dinga is a super sweet 8 year old Bloodhound. She was turned into the Maricopa Animal Shelter by an ex wife who said she wasn't good with children. Not sure where that came from, but she is sure great with children here! Being great family dogs is part of the hound personality, we think it was just vindictiveness unfortunately. People do nasty things to get even with ex spouses. Dinga is 8 years old, she is used to being in the house, she is a typical hound couch potato. She loves to go outside, she likes walks and she doesn't appear to have any health issues. She is her foster mom's best friend. Dinga is located in south east Arizona. The foster mom takes frequent trips to Tucson and occasional trips to Phoenix for meet and greets.
