A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Location: Scottsdale, AZ
Posted Breed: Australian Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). 1 year old Aussie Mix - Black Tri Roger found himself on the euthanasia list at the Maricopa County Shelter because he was petrified. I would be to. But poor Roger was practically catatonic. After being in his foster home for about 2 weeks, he realized that we weren't so bad and he became a regular, happy dog. Roger walks well on a leash, he is friendly and a super sweet boy. Roger would probably not do well in a home filled with children but even a moderately active home will be wonderful for Roger. Roger is only 1 year old, he is house broken, he weighs approximately 45 pounds and a true joy. Roger is located in a foster home in South East Arizona. His foster mom makes frequent trips to Tucson and occasional trips to Phoenix for meet and greets. Please come meet this magnificent boy! 602-316-8919 (no texts please)

      Breed: German Shepherd Dog-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Scottsdale, AZ
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (short coat). Sweet, long legged boy, great family dog Poncho's owner died. No one in the family would help him so he ended up in the shelter in Douglas Arizona. Thank goodness the shelter manager realized what a nice dog he is and reached out to Fedwell Farm to help the young boy. He wouldn't have a very good chance of survival in the shelter. Poncho is 10 months old and he is a sweet heart. We are not really sure of the breeds involved, but he has long legs and he is a very nice dog. \When Poncho arrived at the farm, he ran for 30 minutes, he was so happy to be out of the cage. He loves the kiddie pool and loves to play. Poncho gets along with other dogs. He is housebroken and a true angel. Please come meet Poncho and be the real forever home he deserves. Poncho is located in South East Arizona in a foster home. His foster mom comes to Phoenix occasionally and Tucson frequently for meet and greets. 602-316-8919

Posted Breed: Bloodhound (short coat). Another Senior BloodHound Dinga is a super sweet 8 year old Bloodhound. She was turned into the Maricopa Animal Shelter by an ex wife who said she wasn't good with children. Not sure where that came from, but she is sure great with children here! Being great family dogs is part of the hound personality, we think it was just vindictiveness unfortunately. People do nasty things to get even with ex spouses. Dinga is 8 years old, she is used to being in the house, she is a typical hound couch potato. She loves to go outside, she likes walks and she doesn't appear to have any health issues. She is her foster mom's best friend. Dinga is located in south east Arizona. The foster mom takes frequent trips to Tucson and occasional trips to Phoenix for meet and greets.
