A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Dutch Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). 6 year old Dutch Shepherd Mix Bolt is heartbroken! He can't believe he is in this situation. He was dumped by his owner at the shelter because of a move. He was somebody's pet, in a secure environment and all this change has made him depressed. Bolt is a big boy, he is 6 years old and 80 pounds. He is beautiful bright brindle color. Bolt gets along with other dogs, he is well housebroken, he is a lower energy dog which would make an excellent apartment dog (if an apartment will allow an 80 pound dog). Bolt does not do anything wrong, he can be a bit shy at first, but it may be just because he is scared with all this change in a short amount of time. He is very friendly and a great boy. Bolt is located in South East Arizona, her foster mom goes to Tucson usually on Saturdays for meet and greets. 602-316-8919 (no texts please)

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Cattle Dog (short coat). Senior Smallish Cattle Dog Needs Forever Home Lily is a senior Cattle Dog that was given up to the county because she is a nipper, Queensland Heelers can nip, that is what they are bred to do. Anyway, how can you abandon your dog after 8 years, but I have not gotten very good at predicting human behaviors when it comes to these things. I would not recommend her for small children but she should be fine with 7 and up, as long as they understand not to corner her and then attack her, something toddlers can do by accident. Lilly is well housebroken, she has nice house manners. She does well with most of the dogs in her foster home, she especially likes the boy dogs. Lilly is a bit more independent than most cattle dogs, she likes to be in the room with you, but she is not seeking tons of attention. She will follow you to the end of the world, she sill jump up in the car and ride shot gun, but she is not always seeking attention. Lilly would be fine in an apartment as long as she had a walk once a day. Please come meet this really nice girl and give her the real forever home she really deserves. She is located in a foster home in south east Arizona, her foster mom makes 1 trip per week to Tucson for meet and greets. 602-316-8919 (no texts please)
