A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Moose D3432

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed. Moose is a young hound mix, born in October 2015. He is about 60 pounds of pure love. If you have ever met a hound, they are true comedians and Moose is no exception. Moose is all puppy and Mr. Personality himself. Moose is sure to keep you on your toes. He is ebullient in an energetic way but not consistently noisy. He is a dog that is working very hard on manners, but will need someone who can commit to continued training and exercise, as well as provide him strong boundaries and structure. While there isn't a mean bone in his body, the sounds he makes at play will leave you sure he’s a tough guy. Rest assured, he’s all marshmallow. In his time at Rush to Rescue, Moose has learned a useful variety of commands. While out playing with his friends, Moose will ‘check-in’ of his own volition. He is working on ‘off’ so that he keeps paws on ground when greeting someone. With the spring thaw, Moose demonstrated his digging abilities; however, he can be distracted and redirected. In a yard he may find new ‘furry or feathered friends’ to chase or a lawn mower to bark at. Moose is working on leave it, because he is a curious boy, and getting very good at ‘leaving it’. Never one to touch anything that doesn’t belong to him, he enjoys squeaky toys although they may not squeak for long. Moose likes everyone, including kids, although he doesn't always know his own size and still tends to jump up. Moose is very eager to love everyone; he gives sweet gentle kisses and absolutely loves to snuggle. Moose gets along great with other dogs, both big and small. He has not been around cats while in foster care, so cat testing will have to be done if a potential adopter has a cat. Moose is house trained and crate trained and being a mischievous sort, he needs to be crated when his people are not home. Moose will curl up like a couch potato and spend an entire day watching movies and eating popcorn with you. But, Moose will not do well with a family looking for a consistently laid back dog. Moose needs daily exercise to keep him happy and well-behaved. Interested applicants will need to be able to keep up with all the energy of a hound. For the right family who loves the goofy, energetic, and good-natured naughty nature of a hound, Moose is a wonderful dog. Moose is participating in our Rush to Rescue program, and he is currently being fostered by a pair of offenders at the Rush City Correctional Facility. While there, Moose will be attending a training program with a certified trainer and will be working on his commands with his handlers. Please contact us to find out more about Moose. Meet and greets can be arranged with a Wags & Whiskers volunteer in the prison lobby, adoption event, or other locations for an approved applicant. Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Mixed. Artemisia, known as Sia in her foster home, is a gorgeous German Shepherd mix who was born in November of 2015. She is a very sweet and loyal girl who loves other dogs and does okay with cats. Sia loves being with her people, is very affectionate, and walks nicely on a leash. She is also very smart and enjoys learning new things, and is especially attentive when there are high value treats like cheese involved. Sia is house trained when kept on a schedule and is learning all about crate training, although she would prefer if her people were home all the time. Sia does great in the car and would enjoy a family who likes road trips as much as her. Sia is a special girl and is what we call a tripod as she only has three legs. Don't let that fool you as she gets around just fine! Because of this, it will be important she maintains a slim and healthy weight to keep any extra pressure off her joints, which should not be hard as she makes such a great walking buddy. We do not know Sia's background, but she can be a little shy with new people and in new situations so it will be important her forever family recognizes this and is willing to spend time working on building her confidence. Overall, Sia is a great dog who is looking for a quiet and patient home with someone who can help her build some confidence. For the right person, Sia is going to make a wonderful family pet. Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed. Minnie came to us under extraordinary circumstances and needed to be taken in immediately. She was surrendered due to mouthiness and excessive amounts of energy. For us, it turned into a blessing! Minnie weighs about 40lbs. She is housebroken, and does know some basic commands, although some diligence is needed. She is a dog that loves to be at your side and will follow you where ever you go, so expect a nearby companion. She loves a variety of toys, such as, frisbees and tennis balls. She loves to chew, so don`t expect the toys to last long (she`s destroyed 3 tennis balls and 2 tug o` war ropes so far). Solid bones and Kong are some of her favorites. she likes to go on walks, and will pull only a little on the leash unless surprised or she sees another critter that interests her. She is progressively liking baths and cuddling for a little while. She is a very active dog, can rock the head tilt, and loves to give kisses. She`s incredibly smart and clever; when trying to bring her in off leash or kennel, tactics to get her to follow only work 2 times, then she figures our what your trying to do. Some additional things to know about her: Minnie was removed from her previous household for `herding` the children. while she is still a puppy, this could be associated with nipping/biting. Minnie does show signs that her previous household was very strict on her, and while she`ll follow along side me (I`m male), she does become slightly fearful of my movement towards her. She does well around females, but a male in the household should have a calm, gentle demeanor. Mouthiness was an issue in the beginning, but she is progressively becoming softer and is learning not to do it. Fear can immobilize her, and she`ll immediately drop to submission, regardless of being led to food. Getting her to eat can be a challenge as she will leave her food alone unless the environment is calm and quiet. She`ll even refuse treats, with the impression there is a catch. Even during training, she`ll turn away from treats and refuse to participate. `Time Out` works wonderfully, she knows what it means, acknowledges the purpose, and is more at ease with this form of discipline. Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Shepherd / Mixed. Hi, my name is Echo, and I'm a petite Lab around 40 lbs. I am a southern girl originating from Hope, Arkansas. Several months ago I was brought to Minnesota with my puppies to find a better life. I have worked hard raising my pups and now it is my turn to find my forever home. I am your typical adolescent lab (born in November 2015). I love dogs and kids. I'm a little jumpy when people are moving fast so I will probably do best with kids that are a little bit older - I do live with a 5 year old and do well. I love jumping and chasing rabbits and squirrels, so I would love a fenced in yard to run around in. I'll sit with you, ride in the car with you (even to the gas station) and do pretty much anything you want to do. Because I had heartworm, and have been treated, it is extremely important that you don't forget my monthly heartworm preventative all year round. Otherwise I love my people, belly rubs, walks, fetch and naps...want to join me? Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Posted Breed: Bichon Frise / Terrier / Mixed. ** Don't forget to check out my video my foster mom just posted. I hope you enjoy it! Love Lala Little Lucy, known as Lala to her foster home, is an adorable Bichon mix who weighs approximately 30 pounds. She is a sweet girl who is just discovering what it is like to be a dog. Lala loves to be with other dogs and is learning all of the lovely traits from her doggie sisters. She happiest in the company of other dogs and her little tail wags a mile a minute when she has a doggy pal to play with. Lala has been at her foster home now for 5 months and has made great improvement. Originally she came to us very under socialized and scared. We are not entirely sure of her background, but her behavior is similar to that of a dog raised in a puppy mill. She has come out of her shell and is a joy to watch from when we originally picked her up. She loves to run around the yard, play with stuffed animals and come in for a quick smell of her human friends. Watching her grow into a dog that trusts has been one of the best experiences ever. Her new family must continue to commit to patience and training to help her gain confidence and learn how to be a normal dog. Lala is house trained, has free roam during the working day and currently lives with school aged children and does well. She is very curious to know what is going on and to watch everything. She is taking it all in. She loves going on walks although she does best walking in areas that are not highly traveled as she gets spooked easily. The perfect home for Lala would be a quiet home with another confident dog to model her behavior after. We require a fenced in yard for Lala to keep her safe and secure in addition for another dog she can continue to learn from. If you can offer Lala the love and attention she needs, please fill out an application to meet her. Interested in adopting this lovable animal? He is very good with dogs and loves to play and run around outside, and he loves squeaky toys and bones! A home with a resident dog to show him the ropes would also be a good fit for this guy. He does great in his kennel at night and when we leave the house. It's his safe place and he seems to be very comfortable in it. He is also house trained. He loves to stop and sniff everything when we go on walks! He is somewhat afraid of loud and unexpected noises and commotion. He is fine with kiddos but tries to avoid them. He would be a great fit for a family with no kids or older kids/teens that know how to respect boundaries. He does ok on a leash, but could use some more training in that area. All in all, Jesse is a very playful and snuggly pup who loves dogs and his people/owners. He is working on not pulling on the leash while walking, but he jogs very well. Phil is house trained and goes to the door when it is time to go. Phil will go in his crate, but he is not a big fan of his people leaving and will bark and cry when it happens. He is working on letting his people leave without expressing his sadness. Phil will sleep in his crate at night, but he would prefer to be snuggled up next to you in bed. He is medium energy, he loves to play but he is also up for lounging around. Really, he wants to do whatever you are doing! Phil would make a great family dog. He loves kids, and would love to have multiple people to be around (but one would do too)! Phil would do best as the only dog in the home. Phil would do best with a family who will show him a lot of love and affection. I am a little shy and sometimes strangers and loud noises scare me but once I am your friend I am happy to sit in your lap all day. I have been through two levels of obedience, which has helped me learn better manners and has made me less scared of the world around. I also love walks and doing zoomies! My foster mom says I am high energy and would benefit from a home with an active lifestyle; because of my high energy I would do best with older children that I can’t accidently knock down. Being a princess means I prefer all attention on me. I would do best in a home without cats and I am selective about my doggie friends. All I need is a structured schedule and a warm bed to sleep in! If you are interested in a diamond in the rough then Vala may be your girl. She will shine with a continued commitment to obedience and lots of love! Interested in adopting this lovable animal?
