A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed. Adoption Fee: 380. Artemisia, known as Sia in her foster home, is a gorgeous German Shepherd mix who was born in November of 2015. She is a very sweet and loyal girl who loves other dogs and does okay with cats. Sia loves being with her people, is very affectionate, and walks nicely on a leash. She is also very smart and enjoys learning new things, and is especially attentive when there are high value treats like cheese involved. Sia is house trained when kept on a schedule and is learning all about crate training, although she would prefer if her people were home all the time. Sia does great in the car and would enjoy a family who likes road trips as much as her. Sia is a special girl and is what we call a tripod as she only has three legs. Don't let that fool you as she gets around just fine! Because of this, it will be important she maintains a slim and healthy weight to keep any extra pressure off her joints, which should not be hard as she makes such a great walking buddy. We do not know Sia's background, but she can be a little shy with new people and in new situations so it will be important her forever family recognizes this and is willing to spend time working on building her confidence. Sia would be best in a home without shared walls. Overall, Sia is a great dog who is looking for a quiet and patient home with someone who can help her build some confidence. For the right person, Sia is going to make a wonderful family pet. Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Please go to our website www.wagsmn.org and fill out an Adoption Application. Posted Breed: Bichon Frise / Terrier / Mixed. Adoption Fee: 380. Check out the newest video of Little Lucy playing with her foster friends Mocha and Trigger! Little Lucy, known as Lala to her foster home, has been a wonderful foster dog to watch because she has grown so much. Because as her foster mom, there is truly nothing more special than watching her bloom into a dog. Yes, that is right, bloom into what she was supposed to be all along…..the perfect family pet. Instead, although we are not positive, it appears Lala was a puppy mill mom. This is very sad of course. She originally came to us very under-socialized and scared. But now over 8 months in her foster home, she has grown so much! No longer the timid dog she was, she is now curious. She happiest in the company of other dogs and her little tail wags a mile a minute when she has a doggy pal to play with. She loves to run around the yard, play with stuffed animals and come in for a quick smell of her human friends. She is very curious to know what is going on and to watch everything. She is taking it all in. The love for Lala grows strong each day and now she is ready to spread her wings. Her new family must continue to commit to patience and training to help her gain confidence and learn how to be a normal dog. But each week seeing growth of this dog makes her foster mom know she can succeed. Lala is house trained, has free roam during the working day and currently lives with school aged children and does well. She loves going on walks although she does best walking in areas that are not highly traveled as she gets spooked easily. If you can offer Lala the love and attention she needs, please fill out an application to meet her. ** Little Lucy (aka Lala) is built more like a terrier weighing approx. 35 lbs. We require a fenced in yard for Lala to keep her safe and secure in addition for another dog she can continue to learn from. Please understand this when applying for her. Posted Breed: Coonhound / Mixed. Adoption Fee: 280. Hello! My name is Thor and I am a nine year old Coon Hound. While I may be, and usually act pretty mature, I get excited for food and treats no matter what they are. The rest of the time I like to be lazy and lay around the house. If I can, I prefer to cuddle next to my foster parents, but am fine not always being next to them as well. I don't like spending time in a kennel, and sometimes try to break my way out so I can lounge on the couch instead. My parents love that I sit nicely for baths and don't make a fuss. They don't always enjoy listening to me when I feel like singing though, as is pretty standard for us hounds. I also like going for walks and usually walk nicely by my foster parents side. I do love to sniff around and explore both inside and outside as well though. Right now I need to go out at least once every three or four hours at least because of my medical condition called Cushings Disease. I am making constant improvement now that I am being treated for it; however will need to take medication for the rest of my life. No worries though, as long as you put it with some food I will gobble it down! If you have kids or other pets, I do well with all of them, and generally just ignore them. I can't wait to find somewhere where I can spend most of the day with my parents and go explore outside each day as well. Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed. Minnie came to us under extraordinary circumstances and needed to be taken in immediately. She was surrendered due to mouthiness and excessive amounts of energy. For us, it turned into a blessing! Minnie weighs about 40lbs. She is housebroken, and does know some basic commands, although some diligence is needed. She is a dog that loves to be at your side and will follow you where ever you go, so expect a nearby companion. She loves a variety of toys, such as, frisbees and tennis balls. She loves to chew, so don`t expect the toys to last long (she`s destroyed 3 tennis balls and 2 tug o` war ropes so far). Solid bones and Kong are some of her favorites. she likes to go on walks, and will pull only a little on the leash unless surprised or she sees another critter that interests her. She is progressively liking baths and cuddling for a little while. She is a very active dog, can rock the head tilt, and loves to give kisses. She`s incredibly smart and clever; when trying to bring her in off leash or kennel, tactics to get her to follow only work 2 times, then she figures our what your trying to do. Some additional things to know about her: Minnie was removed from her previous household for `herding` the children. while she is still a puppy, this could be associated with nipping/biting. Minnie does show signs that her previous household was very strict on her, and while she`ll follow along side me (I`m male), she does become slightly fearful of my movement towards her. She does well around females, but a male in the household should have a calm, gentle demeanor. Mouthiness was an issue in the beginning, but she is progressively becoming softer and is learning not to do it. Fear can immobilize her, and she`ll immediately drop to submission, regardless of being led to food. Getting her to eat can be a challenge as she will leave her food alone unless the environment is calm and quiet. She`ll even refuse treats, with the impression there is a catch. Even during training, she`ll turn away from treats and refuse to participate. `Time Out` works wonderfully, she knows what it means, acknowledges the purpose, and is more at ease with this form of discipline. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. What is that you say? You are looking for the perfect pooch? Well then look no further because this girl is it. This sweet adorable compact pit is only 40 lbs and the snuggliest, sweetest pup around. Her name is Lydia, but her foster mom likes to call her Pig because she snorts and grunts just like a little pig. And just like a pig who roots in the mud looking for food, Pig will do just that, but instead of mud, she roots through blankets to snuggle up to her beloved human. She is a complete goofball and makes her foster family laugh on a daily basis. Pig is very devoted to her humans and while she has not been around kids yet, she likely will do very well. She loves to play fetch, chew on bones, and give kisses. She also loves other dogs, all she wants to do is play, play, play. Pig would do best in a home without cats though, she is just a little too interested. This little girl really is the best dog and will show her family exactly where the saying, "Dog is man's best friend," comes from. Are you ready to show this girl all the love she deserves? *Like many white Bullies, Lydia has seasonal allergies. These are controlled with an allergy med that works well for her. I think she means that I'm very happy and full of energy. I'm 63 pounds and pretty strong, I don't mean to pull on walks but I get really excited by other people and animals so I want to go meet them. My foster mom says we are working on my manners! I currently live with another dog and a cat- I find the cat very fascinating but he doesn't seem to want to be my friend. I haven't spent time with young kids, but my foster mom thinks that with some training I would be great with them (her concern is that I don't know how big and strong I am and that I might unintentionally knock over someone smaller than me!). Overall, my foster mom says I'm a good dog, who will make a great companion to the right person! Fill out an application if you think you might be that person for me!
