Posted Breed: Poodle (Miniature) / Scottish Terrier Scottie / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Paxey! This little guy was found in the woods by some kind people. To prevent him from goign to Animal Control, we picked him up and took him to the Vet where he stayed overnight and they gave him a hair cut. How different he looks. They said he was a good boy, but cataracts have taken his vision. He did not potty in his kennel the whole night, he whines when he needs to go out, walks well on a leash. They said he was a sweet, sweet dog, but he can't be startled or picked up without talking to him and letting him know that you are going to pick him up. When he is frightened he will growl and snap because he isn't sure about what is happening, or going to happen. We need a special person for a 'special need' fur baby. Possibly with no young children who might startle or try to pick him up. Please, open your heart and home to Paxey.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Akita (medium coat). Meet out girl...Kit..She is an Akita and is looking forward to having a family to call her own. She is spayed and utd on shots. She is around 4-5 years old and is absolutely a beauty. She is heart worm negative and is on heart worm prevention. According to her foster: She's great in the house, with other dogs and kids. Great on the leash, needs some command training (sit, stay). She is very smart and will need lots of attention. Some of the down side is that she hates to be alone, mildly terrified of cats, panics in a storm. She can and will hurt herself to escape a fence or crate if she is afraid. She enjoys walks and must be walked. She sleeps well in her crate at night (depending on the weather) and goes in without a problem. She doesn't like a bath, but she's easy to handle, really doesn't like her feet or butt touched. She doesn't bite, even when upset. She only barks appropriately. Believes herself to be a lap dog. We are hoping that she can soon find her own family, she has been deprived of this for 5 years and it is time for her to know the love that can be shared to her and by her. if you are interested in giving this well deserved girl a forever home please go to our website:carolinahelpingpawsrescue.org and fill out an application and email back to us at carolinahelpingpawsrescue@gmail.com Her adoption fee is $180.

Posted Breed: Border Collie / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). We saved Dakota from a high kill shelter as she was running out of time. We were told she had possible kidney stones and was urinating blood and needed out ASAP per shelter vets documentation, with surgery needed to remove the stones. She was utd on shots, spayed and good with other dogs per shelter, which we have since discovered she certainly is protective of her humand and isn't really friendly towards other animals. We immediately took her to the vet and upon examination, and x-rays he told us he couldn't justify doing surgery, because he did not feel or see any stones. Dakota has begun her heart worm treatment and is doing great with her foster. Dakota will continue on her heart worm treatment.. She is listed as Border/Collie/Lab. Chocolate, born 3/23/2013. She was an Owner surrender at a high kill shelter. She is available for adoption but must complete her heartworm treatment. She probably would be better in a home by herself, or with just one other dog. Previous owner said on intake sheet, she likes children (probably older children, not unsteady toddlers), dogs, cats and livestock, but we believe she would need re-introduced to other animals prior to adoption. Her breed is very protective and needs a strong human leader in the household. Download an application at our website: wwwcarolinahelpingpawsrescue.org

      Location: Shaw AFB, SC
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Pointer / Mixed (short coat). We are sad to say that he will be coming back to our Rescue (sad, but that is what is suppose to happen.) His family is not able to keep him any longer. Maximus was a bottle fed baby from a Shelter when their Mom was killed. He is utd on shots, is neutered and is a good dog, but with still a lot of puppy habits. It will take someone willing and knowing the puppy stage and to endure and help him get through it. He still has the chewing everything he can, mouthing, biting stage (which he needs to be taught that is not acceptable). All of these issues can be dealt with. Some puppies are easier to help break these bad habits than others. It doesn't make him a bad dog, it just takes a person knowing and willing to help, and may take a little longer for him. The family has tried really hard to make it work, but when he is outside he is disturbing neighbors. Love doesn't conquer all things... He is a little over 6 months old. His adoption fee is $180.00 Please fill out an application on our website if interested: carolinahelpingpawsrescue.org

Posted Breed: Pointer / Bluetick Coonhound / Mixed (short coat). Bonnie Belle is a very special dog and needs a very special adoptive family. Bonnie came into our rescue with hip dysplasia and had been accidentally stepped on which causes her knee ro become deformed. But despite the pain, Bonnie is sweet and loving. She loves people! She is so sweet and loves toys. She would do well in a family with older children, not that she has EVER done anything to a small child, we only know how she is with children 6 years and up. The best comfort level for her would possibly be only dog or only one other dog in the family. She doesn't want to be stepped on again. She is heartworm negative. Utd on shots and spayed. She has been in a wonderful foster home and is needing to find her forever home. Hopefully one who has the financial means to provide the surgery she needs. Our estimates were over $500 and our fundraising efforts have failed her as Sumter has a depressed economy. She is around 3-4 years old. If interested contact us on Facebook or on our website for an adoption application. www.carolinahelpingpawsrescue.org Please help us get this sweet girl back to full function and no pain and placed in a great family! Her adoption fee is not set as we really need to get her surgery completed. A home visit and vet reference is required.

Chabo is heartworm positive and will be treated with slow kill meds. His adopters will be under contract to complete this life-saving treatment (at a local vet at rescue expense if necessary). She is spayed and undergoing heartworm treatment but can be adopted with a contract to complete the life-saving heartworm course of treatment. She was rescued from a high kill shelter and given a new lease on life with us, but needs a family of her own so our fosters can save more lives! Dakota had a broken leg which was badly infected and she had been shot with birdshot pellets. So sad to see such a great girl abused so badly. She is very mellow and shy at first since she could not trust the humans she previously met. She is fearful of loud noises like many dogs, and loves to play with her foster sisters.
