Posted Breed: Retriever. Passion 4 Paws is looking for new foster homes in Chittenden County and surrounding areas! We save dogs from shelters in the south and need foster homes in the north for our dogs until they get adopted. The more foster homes we have, the more dogs we can save! Please consider giving this short term rewarding commitment a try. Foster as often or as little as you'd like. We supply any vet care needed and support to our foster homes, you supply the food and the love. Please contact us today to find out more! Visit our website to complete a foster application www.Passion-4-Paws.org Disclosure: Breed labels are often incorrect: we rarely know the genetic lineage of the dogs we rescue. Many shelters and rescues specify breeds based on appearance; however, research has shown that less than 2% of a dog’s DNA determines appearance! Passion 4 Paws does not practice the use of labels pertaining to compatibility with others or dog breed. Labels such as “dog friendly” and “child friendly” should be used with caution as they often over-simplify the personalities and behavior of dogs.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Here is her video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uip8cWso3Q Sadie is approx. 1 1/2-2 years old, about 58 lbs., vetted, spayed, and micro-chipped. She has the CUTEST lower lip and underbite! We believe she looks Boxer/Terrier mix; but a DNA test on her would be fun! Sadie was found in SC unconscious from severe heat stroke and very emaciated. She was immediately rushed to the ER Vet for medical care and is now a very healthy pup ready to start her new life! She is a young pup and loves to play as you can see in her video she runs like a deer; she would do well with an active lifestyle where she can get the exercise she thoroughly loves. Sadie is a very affectionate, expressive, and goofy girl who loves people of all ages. Sadie is house trained and is medium+ energy; she loves attention and going on adventures. Sadie is currently training with one of our VIP volunteers and comes with professional training session! She current is very insecure around other dogs (with the training we have lined up for her we think she will learn to be more confident) but is so willing to learn so Sadie should be the only pup and center of attention in the home for now. Sadie would do best outside of the City environment without all the stimulation comes with a City life; with Adopters that are experienced with dogs and where she can have the freedom to be herself! If you are interested in adopting Sadie please fill out an Application at www.Passion-4-Paws.org (please make sure you have the Vermont site) thanks! Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Retriever / Mixed. ** IN VERMONT** Meet Barney! Here are some words from his foster: If you're looking for an athletic companion to adventure with and make with, then Barney is the wing man for you! Weighing in at a slender and muscular 46 pounds and 18 mos old. Barney is agile, powerful, and amazingly flexible. He travels well in the car (in his crate), and is ver y excited with any new location or adventure. He LOVES playing at the Starr Farm Dog Park. He plays extremely well with other dogs both large and small. Have not observed him around any cats. He is also great with kids. Barney's needs: He is a puppy with lots of energy and requires daily exercise. He doesn't seem to have any "bad habits" such as getting on furniture, begging for food, or chewing sneakers or furniture. He does enjoy chewing on his Nylabone, reindeer antler, Kong, and bully sticks. When Barney first came to VT he couldn't/wouldn't even sit. He can now sit, stay, come, and "good night" (command to get in his crate). He has even learned to ring some wind chimes with his nose to indicate that he would like to go outside. With a couple weeks of repetition he seems to be able to pick up most concepts. A perfect home for Barney would have a fenced yard (or an invisible fence as I think he would learn this quickly). His new family should know he needs daily walks (preferably morning and evening) or any other exercise. Another dog in the house for Barney to play with would be a great scenario. Barney will absolutely cuddle if you want and lean on you when you're at his level (whether you want him to or not). He will also just lay down on his own bed and curl up while I'm working around the house or watching TV. Barney will be reciprocate a great friendship as your earn his trust and he learns the routine. Video to come!
