Many shelters and rescues specify breeds based on appearance; however, research has shown that less than 2% of a dog’s DNA determines appearance! A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

We swear she is part Boxer! She is the body, uses her paws, her eyes, and her cute underbite are all boxer like! Candy dose well with other dogs and loves to play. She needs to be monitored in her play as she enjoys to play very energetically. She's playful with new dogs, but can come off a little strong. We have not observed her to have any bad intentions with other dogs/attack instincts. She has a doggy best friend carol, who is a high energy pitty / boxer mix. They love to chase each other and 'box' and wrestle playfully. We are unsure how she would do with cats. She really likes to hear that she is a "good girl". Andie is an extremely people oriented; happy, energetic, and a joyful girl. She will instantly love on you and shower you with kisses. She loves squeaky toys, throwing them up to her self and carrying them around. She is very good so far at making the distinction between toys and owners' possessions. She will rip her toys to shreds but doesn't touch clothes, bags, trash etc. Her ideal family will be active and assertive yet fun and committed to helping a sweet girl learn boundaries. Play time and exercise are essential. Hiking buddy anyone? Andie knows sit, lie down and stay she is working on her leash skills. Per her Foster family she is the most loveable lil thing ever. Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed. IN VERMONT** Meet handsome Bentley!!! Here is his video with his BFF Bella: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPoOI0-XzyU&feature=youtube_gdata Bentley is 1 ½ years old, approx. 30 lbs., vaccinated, and neutered. He lost his family due to mold in their home; everything that is familiar to him, a new baby and another on the way, his BFF Bella he now has to be separated from as she is wanted but he is not much to our sadness. He is house trained and crate trained. He LOVES to go for hikes, walks, loves to play, loves the water, and loves attention from his humans. Bentley now much prefers a calmer environment where this is not a lot of "comings and goings". Bentley is med/high energy and is your classic 4 legged happy toddler. He needs a training regime to provide structure and discipline because he currently is so confused about his "role" in any pack. He learns quickly and given time with patience he will be your furever loyal friend. Without Bella we need to see and hope he will flourish. Older children would be preferred as he needs predictability and respect of his space. Bentley knows basic commands such as Sit, Come, and Stay. He loves to run, play fetch and needs someone that has the time and energy to provide him training on proper behavior. If you are interested in adopting Bentley please fill out an Application at www.Passion-4-Paws.org (please make sure you have the Vermont site) thanks! Penny is a great pup; she is most happy when she is cuddled up next to a human (adults and kids alike). She is not a barker and loves to consume rawhide. Miss Penny hasn't quite taken to the cold weather but she is getting more used to it. In a nutshell....she is extremely low maintenance and just wants to be cuddled! Penny is best without cats and may do well with 1 dog as a companion but only with proper introductions and patience. Penny lives with another dog now that she loves but it took some time for her to warm up. Since then, they are best buds and even share a dog bed and human bed. She is good with kids; Penny is absolutely fine with children of all ages. She loves people, loves to ride in the car, is potty trained, is a very quiet dog, isn't intimidated or scared of men. She can be very active when she is outside as she likes to chase squirrels and chipmunks (prey drive toward smaller animals). Inside, she likes to lay around. Penny is a fantastic dog. She would do well with any family. If they have a dog, the new family would just need to take it slow and follow introductions instructions to set her up to succeed with another dog. Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed. **COURTESY POST ** IN VERMONT ** Meet Rocky! Here is his video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxtwEupiK64 DEAR P4P FRIENDS - our dog Trainer Wyatt is currently caring for him. Rocky is likely a Wolf Hybrid and has basically been "set up to fail". His former owners got him as a puppy and did not have the necessary skills as he matured to understand what he needed. He is NOT a "pocket dog" and needs owner w/ SERIOUS dog experience and/or willingness to learn. He has made tremendous strides w/ his Trainer who is currently interviewing potential adopters. Yes, you read that correctly.. Rocky is not being interviewed. Adopters are. This is to ensure he finds a permanent home, not a temporary one. His Trainer is willing to work with anyone who shows potential. Rocky has a strong prey drive and is fear aggressive. He does, however, do well with other medium & large dogs. He has assimilated into his Trainer's Pack Walks with little prior interaction: so this is tremendous indication of his ability to learn, and become cooperative member of family with or without, other dogs. PLEASE CONSIDER SHARING, as one never knows who might see this to help this beautiful animal out. HIS STORY: He approx. 3 years old, male, vetted, and neutered. Rocky lost him home last fall when his family didn't know how to handle him and what he needed to thrive to become a balanced pack member vs. pack leader. Rocky is an EXTREMELY intelligent and perceptive pup that needs a knowledgeable pack leader; he has a history of making reactive decisions with people. He is loyal, obedient, gets along with other dogs in an experienced environment (best with larger dogs), and needs both physical and mental stimulation. Imagine having a dog who's intelligence is capable of being a Police dog, a Search & Rescue, a running companion, and more but isn't getting any of that mental or physical stimulation or training. We believe Rocky has a purpose and is trying to find his way to his forever family. He has been staying in boarding for months which is completely unfair to him but has been doing well in that environment much to our surprise. He is a stunning mix of we believe Shepherd and Husky however there is no way to know for certain without a DNA test (these are very helpful to understand any mixed breed much better). Rocky loves to go for car rides, loves to snuggle, loves to hike, and needs a loyal human pack leader. If you are interested in adopting Rocky please fill out an Application at our website at www.Passion-4-Paws.org (pls make sure you have the Vermont site) or if you have an Application already in let us know! **PLEASE NOTE** This is a courtesy post where we are assisting his owner to find a home and do not own Rocky. Should have named him "Bronx"! Winston is approx. 2-3 years old, male, neutered, vetted, micro-chipped, and about 58 lbs! Winston is a wiggle butt; he loves people and kids and is always so incredibly happy. He knows sit and is learning wait. He is a sponge for knowledge, loves to go for runs, walks, hikes and is learning how to ride in a car (he is a bit clumsy in a car). He is housetrained and is learning what a ball is. We think Winston has not had much attention in his past nor did someone love him enough to show him the ropes! Someone probably got him as a cute puppy then discarded him while neglecting his basic needs. This fella is so incredibly handsome with red/gold eyes that match his fur; he has a cute underbite. For commands Winston knows Sit, down, bow, touch He is very treat motivated and learns quickly. He is in the process of learning proper doggy social etiquette but would prefer to be the center of attention! He loves to be with people, follows you everywhere, like to sleep with you, like to play fetch, loves to learn trick and does well with obedience training. Highly food motivated. Loves food, belly rubs and people. He would be best with older kids that aren't so unpredictable.
