Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed. My name is Devo, I am so glad to meet you! In fact, I'm lucky I'm meeting you at all. I was found by the police department tied outside on a bitterly cold night. It was obvious I hadn't eaten in a very long time, basically skin on bones. I am now healthy and happy. I am a playful dog that loves toys and being outdoors. And I love to eat! Devo needs to go to a home where he will be indoor/outdoor, a member of the family, and will not be tied out. Upon adoption this animal will have been spayed/neutered, will be UTD on vaccinations, dewormed, and tested for heartworms if 6 months or older. For information on adopting or questions regarding this animal, phone 660.359.2700 or email us at greenhillsanimalshelter@hotmail.com.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

I would do best in a home with no children or older children. Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier (Parson Russell Terrier) / Mixed (short coat). Boy do I have an interesting story to tell you. I was just minding my own business, riding in the car when suddenly it stopped moving. Someone pulled me from the car then tossed me into a building. Then the truck just took off! Everyone inside the building was so surprised by my entrance. But good for me it was the animal shelter, because I was in bad shape. I had fleas so bad I had bald, red patches, and it itched and hurt so bad that I screamed when I scratched. It took awhile, but I am flea free, but my tail may always stay partly bald. I am a friendly dog looking for a good home where I will never get flea infested again and never be abandoned. I am big and strong, so you better be too ;) I like my people, but I'm not too keen on other dogs and a little too keen on cats, so my new home should be one where I am the only pet. I was a bit confused at first, but I have figured out that I really like people. I love it when they pet me and talk softly to me. I would like a home that is on the quiet side with lots of positive vibes coming my way. P.S. I'm very handsome.

Posted Breed: Boxer / Mixed. Lilah is one of the sweetest, most mild mannered dogs we have had at the shelter. She showed up and someone's front door and didn't leave, but they couldn't keep her. She is quiet, has good manners and loves to be physically close. She would prefer to avoid conflict than cause any trouble. She would make a great family dog. She is very sensitive, so kindness and loving intent would be best ingredients for her to have a happy life. Lilah will need to meet other dogs in the home to check for compatibility. Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Chow Chow / Mixed (short coat). My name is Lizzy. I lived in a home, but could not stay. My owner had fallen on hard times and couldn't afford to care for me any longer. I was a bit thrown off, having never been away from the farm, but I have gotten used to new things and have started to relax and have fun. I am a happy, smiling, young lady that is eager to please. I have a very unique look with big brown eyes that just scream "I love you!" I am part Chow, but I am more like the other part, Lab. But I cannot be adopted in Trenton city limits because of the Chow half. **Throughout July 2015 this dog's adoption fee is only $25!** Upon adoption this animal will have been spayed/neutered, will be UTD on vaccinations, dewormed, and tested for heartworms if 6 months or older.
