A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier X DOB: est 10/2012 Gender: male Altered:yes Coat: short Size: medium Color(s): white Description: ***Needs a Foster Home*** This dog is in need of a foster home as well as a permanent home. If you are interested in fostering call the Adoption Center at (805) 644-PETS (7387). Hi, I'm Brave Heart a very sweet American Staffordshire Terrier X. I've been described as being the poster dog for love, loyalty, and ferocity. Here is the story of how I got my name from C.A.R.L. My owner and 3 other people were living in a car in a park (not in Ventura County). Law enforcement received a report of "shots fired" in the park. On arrival they found 2 dead in the car and my owner's best friend dead next to the car. My owner and I had scrambled out of the car (gunfire still erupting). Immediately, I attacked the shooters and drove them off (this account has been verified by police report and newspaper account). I was taken to the local animal services. Workers there were unable to handle me (I'd just survived a street war, overstimulated, you think?). They considered "putting me down". The law officer transporting me interceded and thankfully euthanasia was put on hold. My owner was only 17 so he couldn't pick me up. He begged his social worker to help save me and it worked. She found C.A.R.L. and they agreed to take me in. My owner and his caretaker picked me up and drove me to Ventura County and C.A.R.L. C.A.R.L. was astounded at how friendly and loving I am. All I want to do is be with someone who cares. I am not sure I am ready to be left alone at home. I was so happy living full time with my owner and now I have my new friends at C.A.R.L. with me all the time. I might want to live in a home where someone is home almost all the time. I am not sure about living with other dogs, hope to work on making friends while I am at C.A.R.L. My owner came out to play with me and help us both recover from all the changes. He did lots of work at C.A.R.L. as a volunteer. He said I saved him, he saved me and C.A.R.L. gave both of us a chance. Now he has gone to live with family and I could not go. We said good bye and I am ready to find someone else to call family. *Thank you to Sharon for sponsoring this wonderful dog at the Burnice Kraemer Sanctuary and giving him the chance for a better life. If you are interested in fostering call the Adoption Center at (805) 644-PETS (7387). Hi, I'm Desi a gorgeous Catahoula / American Staffordshire Terrier mix who loves to play and be around people. I was one of many dogs rescued from a raid in El Rio. Those days long behind me, I'm waiting for someone to come and take me home. I'm energetic and cuddly and I love the water. I would make a great jogging partner as I run along beside you. I'm house trained, good with respectful children and good with dogs with proper introductions. We can do a meet and greet if you already have a dog in your home. I do need a home with no cats. I react strongly when I see stray cats at the kennel, doing backflips to try and get to them. I was at one of C.A.R.L.'s mobiles where someone approached me in an interesting way. I think I heard someone say it was something called a wheelchair. I wasn't afraid of it at all, just very curious. I went right up to the person and just stood there for a closer look. He leaned down, and I very gently sniffed him and gave him some kisses. I then stood up on the wheelchair for a moment to investigate him further, which he seemed to like. We both had a great time getting to know each other for a little bit before he went on his way. Everyone praised me for being such a good girl. I'm grateful to be given a chance to know the true meaning of being a cherished member of a loving family. We've been through a lot and I hope we all find our forever homes really soon. Additional information: *Housetrained *Needs home with no cats *Current on shots

I've been through a lot loosing both my parents and now I've lost my beloved "sister" and companion too. She sadly passed away after an incurable illness. I really need a home where I'll be showered with love and attention so I don't feel so all alone. I'm not a playful dog so I probably would do best in an adult only home. I might do ok if the children were gentle and respectful with me Sadly people by-pass the older dogs for whatever reasons they may have. I'd sure love to be back in the comforts of a home with somebody to take care of me for the rest of my life. Could that someone be you? If you have room in your heart and home for adorable me, please come and meet me. Additional information: *Housetrained *Needs home with no small children *Current on shots

If you are interested in fostering call the Adoption Center at (805) 644-PETS(7387). Hi, I'm Mahlaya a very sweet and a little shy American Staffordshire Terrier X who is need of a new home. The older female dog in the home started picking on me when I was 7 months old. We were separated and went to training (I've successfully completed Petsmart's intermediate and advanced education classes as well as successfully completing the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test) and things were fine again. But then it started again and we have been separated for a while now. Dad is willing to continue to work with us, but our future Mom says one of us has to go. I guess I drew the short straw. Being separated all the time isn't a great way for me to live. I want to be part of the family and be able to interact all the time. I'm good with small dogs and I ignore other dogs when I get to go to Petsmart and Home Depot. I'm active and playful, but can also be a cuddle buddy too. I love children, toys and playing fetch and I absolutely love the water! I've had formal training and know -- sit, stay, lay down, shake, high five, return to side and come. I walk well on a leash and love to go for runs and walks too. I'm house and crate trained and will let you know if I have to go out. I hope you will come meet and see for yourself what a wonderful girl I am. Additional information: *Housetrained *Current on shots
