Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Stephanie Rivero (stephanier@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet. Sweet and gentle girl looking for a FUR-ever home! TOMASA HAS AN ADOPTION PENDING- SHE HOPES YOU WILL CONSIDER ADOPTING ONE OF THE OTHER LUCKY PUPS! Name: Tomasa Breed: Terrier Mix Approximate Age: 2 years old Approximate Weight: 47lbs Currently Living at: A shelter in Puerto Rico. Tomasa will be making her way up to the DC area soon to look for her FUR-ever home! Has Lived with: Dogs Special Adoption Considerations: Tomasa has tested positive for Heartworm and is undergoing treatment. Hola! My name is Tomasa and let me tell you- I’ve already had quite the life. I don’t quite know how this happened, but somehow I ended up tied to the front of a scary place called a ‘shelter’. There were a lot of other dogs in cages and it was loud and cold on that cement floor. Then the amazing folks at Lucky Dog came to see me and now I get to travel all the way to the DC area in hopes that someone there will want to take me home. I'm waiting every day for my chance to find someone to love, cuddle, and play with! So a bit about me: I've got a really beautiful and soft grey coat with a white patch on my chest! I've also got big floppy ears- that will do whatever you tell them to (with some proper training, that is)! Right now, I’m about 2 years old and 47 lovable pounds. My age means that I am likely done growing—but no matter how big I get I’ll always think of myself as a lap dog. The folks at the shelter say that I do really well with other dogs and kids. They are not sure how I will interact with cats yet, but the folks at Lucky Dog can try to find out for you if you need to know! I’ve been daydreaming everyday about my new family, and I've decided I would love to go to a home with some folks that will take me on hikes, runs, and trips to the dog park to play with my canine friends. I don’t think I would be able to stop wagging my tail if I had my very own human who will give me lots of belly rubs and get me cool toys to play with. If my new family would take me to obedience classes so that I could use my smarts to learn tons of new tricks that would be amazing. If you think I might be the right dog for you, then please let my adoptions coordinator know! I do hope to hear from you soon! Woofs and tail wags, Tomasa Like most shelter dogs, Tomasa may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. Tomasa has tested positive and has not yet been treated for Heartworm disease. Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. The fee for adoption of a HW positive dog is $450 , which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment. If you are interested in adopting, please download our Adoption Questionnaire and email it to Stephanie at StephanieR@LuckyDogAnimalRescue.org! A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Come meet Petey and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (Oct 8) from 12-2 pm at the Unleashed by Petco, 1855 Wisconsin Avenue Northwest, Washington, D.C., DC 20007)!!!!!! PETEY NEEDS A FOSTER OR A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: PETEY Best Guess for Breed: Terrier Mix Best Guess for Age: 1.5 years as of 6/8/17 SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 45 - 50 lbs Has Lived With: Other dogs Currently Living at: Boarding. Petey needs a full time foster or forever home. Special Considerations: Petey needs help working on polite leash manners when around other dogs. Hola! My name is Petey and let me tell you- I’ve already had quite the life. I was born and raised on the streets of Puerto Rico until some wonderful rescuers saved me from long days roaming around and being very hungry. Since then, I have learned how to be a good boy and I've gotta tell ya- I REALLY like living in a home! Check out this video of me in my current foster home: https://youtu.be/flPfUU5rX3Q! I got to travel on the plane all the way to the DC area in hopes that someone here will want to take me home. I'm waiting every day for my chance to find someone to love, cuddle, and play with! So a bit about me: I've got a really beautiful and soft white coat with some brown spots just on my face! I've also got big floppy ears- that will do whatever you tell them to (with some proper training, that is)! Right now, I’m about 1.5 years old and 45 - 50 lovable pounds. My age means that I am likely done growing—but no matter how big I get I’ll always think of myself as a lap dog. I do really well with other dogs - as long as I am given a proper introduction. We are not sure how I will interact with kids or cats yet, but the folks at Lucky Dog can try to find out for you if you need to know! Woofs and tail wags, PETEY A NOTE FROM PETEY'S FOSTER PARENT: Petey is an extremely well mannered house guest. He is fully house trained and has had zero accidents in the 2+ weeks that he has been living with me. He is also crate trained and will go to his crate for bedtime, or if he is just wanting a nap. He does not jump on the furniture or bed (although if you invited him Im sure he would), he does not chew anything that he isn't supposed to, he does not get into the trash, he does not counter surf, he does not bark very much, and he will let you know if he needs to go out. He knows basic commands, such as sit, lay down, and stay and we work on these daily. He will even sit and stay while you fill his bowl. We are at the point that i don't crate him unless I know that I will be gone for 3+ hours. He does like to be outside and is pretty good at fetch, although he needs a bit more work on the "give" part of the game. He also does well at the dog park and will focus his time and energy to whatever balls are around more so than the other dogs. His leash manners have improved drastically and has cut down on his tendency to pull (still happens when he gets excited though). He has also made great strides with his leash anxiety and while he has his days, most days he is able to properly meet other dogs on leash without incident. There are definitely some tricks to this which I would be happy to share as I think this will be an ongoing thing to work on with Petey. Like most shelter dogs, Petey may need a refresher on housetraining. He is likely crate trained. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. Courageous Calvin! CALVIN NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: CALVIN Best Guess for Breed: YELLOW LAB MIX Best Guess for Age: 10 MONTHS AS OF 10/12/17 SEX: MALE Approximate Weight: ABOUT 40 LBS. Has Lived With: Other Dogs Currently Living at: SCARY SHELTER; CALVIN NEEDS A FOSTER OR BETTER YET A FOREVER HOME. Special adoption considerations: 2nd Dog required in home to give Calvin some confidence building lessons, no kids under 12 years of age due to his shyness. Calvin is a young puppy, frequent potty breaks, and socialization needed. Well Hello There! I am Calvin, Calvin the courageous lab puppy, or at least I am learning to be courageous! I am a friendly, smart wiggly Lab Mix puppy but I am a bit shy at first in new situations and am learning to be more confident. I am looking for my perfect forever family and I need you to already have a dog in your home so I can build my confidence from him/her!!! I am excitingly waiting to find my furever home with a patient, wonderful family that will love me always! I love to play with other dogs and have lots of puppy wrestle sessions! I want to be home and be able to go rompin' around my very own yard smelling the pretty spring flowers! And of course, like any good lab, I am sooooo ready to learn to doggy paddle - can you teach me??!! My dream would be long walks sniffing along, doggy parks, peanut butter kongs and a cozy bed to curl up with my new brother or sister - I don't mind sharing with you either! My foster mom at the shelter says " Calvin was the shyest puppy in his litter, but his confidence has improved a lot. He does get worried in unfamiliar environments, especially when on leash. He would be most successful in a patient, loving home with a second dog without small children (under 12 years old). Calvin is sweet and lovable, and bonds strongly with his favorite person. He loves treats and loves to learn". Check out some video of Calvin learning to sit and come on a leash!!! https://youtu.be/h3_P0SqFQrY https://youtu.be/Czmtd7nqPhA Since I am soo young, I will be a big responsibility and take a lot of time, lookin' after and training. I am a blank slate ready to be trained and molded into your perfect pup! I will probably be good with kids and cats since I am just a puppy but I have never lived with them officially. So what in the name of milkbones are you waiting for....fill out the application and send it to my adoption coordinator! I am trying to wait patiently...wiggle...wiggle...wiggle! Due to a puppy's need for attention and frequent bathroom excursions, we do not adopt puppies to homes where no one is home during the day. This means no 9-5ers, unless you commit to hiring a dog walker to come multiple times a day. Like all puppies, Calvin will need to work on housetraining and will also need to go to obedience school to grow into a well-socialized dog! The adoption fee for this dog is $400, which includes the cost of routine vetting and transport from the shelter. If you are interested in adopting, please download our Adoption Questionnaire and email it to Ali at Alip@luckydoganimalrescue.org! Name: Lucy Loo Breed: boxer/shepherd mix Approximate Age: 2-3 years SEX: female Approximate Weight: 50 lbs Has Lived With: dogs Currently Living at: DC foster Special adoption considerations: Lucy Loo must go to an experienced dog owner who is comfortable working with a trainer to help her be more confident and comfortable. My name is Lucy Loo. Through no fault of my own, I found myself in the shelter with three puppies (Lewis, Lola and Larry). My puppies have all been adopted and I am excited to be in DC to find my furever home. I am dreaming of a family who will keep me active and give me lots of opportunities to socialize. I also heard that dogs with homes get to go on walks and sleep inside on their very own beds, which sounds pretty great. I am a volunteer favorite at Lucky Dog! My fosters love me because I ride nicely in the car and am great at home. I am happy staying in and watching Netflix and ordering in but also love to go on hikes and like to show a fitbit who is boss. I also enjoy roller derby and crocheting. My ultimate goal is to become a spokespup for Barkbox Super Chewer. I follow Lexy the Elderbull on Instagram and she is a real role model for me—she knows how to wear a tutu and pearls and make it look so effortless. I get nervous when I meet other dogs on leash so I need my new family to help me work on that. Because they loved having me and recognize what an amazing girl I am, my fosters have sponsored me and whoever adopts me will receive a training package (included in the adoption fee) to help me with my transition and to get settled into my forever home. Like most shelter dogs, Lucy Loo may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. Here is an update from my foster family: Lucy Loo is such a sweetheart. She is out of the puppy stage but did not seem to have any structure prior to coming to Lucky Dog. She is eagerly learning to sit and impress us with her smarts. She is very food driven, making her training easy and fun. Lucy will do best with strong leadership from an owner as she will not hesitate to be queen of the house. She is very playful but certainly a couch potato too. She loves tug-a-war, chewing on her bones, destroying a chew toy, wrestling with other big dogs and playing fetch. Lucy Loo loves her walks but is even more excited to get back on the couch to snuggle back up to us. She has already been on a hike at Great Falls and was up for the challenge- what a rock climber she is! She does well with other dogs off leash. Lucy does amazing in cars as well- the best foster in the car we have ever had! We are so happy to have her in our home and know she will make the perfect addition as a mature mama in her forever family soon. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. Come meet Marina and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (Oct 8) from 12-2 pm at the Unleashed by Petco, 1855 Wisconsin Avenue Northwest, Washington, D.C., DC 20007)!!!!!! MARINA NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Marina Best Guess for Breed: Hound mix Best Guess for Age: 3 yrs. SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 52 lbs. Has Lived With: Other dogs Currently Living at: Boarding in D.C. where she gets to play with her dog friends all day! Special adoption considerations: Because she is a hound, we would like to caution those who live in apartments as they sometimes like to howl! Marina is a sweet 3-year-old, 52-pound Houndy-Houndy Hound mix. She possesses the unique ability to be both a baying, "a-ROO-ROO-ROO" doggo, while SIMULTANEOUSLY showing great promise as a ninja or spy, as she was coasting along quietly for many weeks, garnering very little notice until this past weekend... a benevolent covert operative, if you will. In her spare time, Marina enjoys snuggles and crashing out on the ground or floor in extremely inconvenient places. Marina is currently living in a doggy daycare facility where she enjoys playing with other dogs all day - because of this she would do great in a home with other dogs OR she'd also be happy to soak up all the attention as an only dog. We are not quite sure how Marina will do with cats or kids yet - but we are happy to find out for you. So, what are you waiting for? Fill out the application and lets get this sweet girl into your home! Like most shelter dogs, Marina may need a refresher on house-training. She is likely crate trained. Marina has tested positive and been treated for for Heartworm disease. Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. The adoption fee for this dog is $450, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment. If you are interested in adopting, please download our Adoption Questionnaire and email it to Liz K. at lizk@luckydoganimalrescue.org! Name: Cutie Best Guess for Breed: Lab Mix Approximate Age: 2.5 years old as of 4/17/17 Best Guess for Weight: 40 lbs Currently Living at: DC Area Foster Home Has Lived with: Dogs Special Adoption Considerations: Cutie must go to a home with an already existing dog. He can not go to a home with young children or cats. Hi there! My name is Cutie and let me tell you- I’ve already had quite the life. I don’t quite know how this happened, but somehow I ended up in a scary place called a ‘shelter’ in Puerto Rico. There were a lot of other dogs in cages and it was loud and cold on that cement floor. Then the amazing folks at Lucky Dog came to see me and flew me to the DC area-- they tell me that someone here will want to take me home. I'm waiting every day for my chance to find someone to love, cuddle, and play with! So a bit about me: I've got a really beautiful and soft yellow coat with a white patch on my chest! I've also got floppy ears- that will do whatever you tell them to (with some proper training, that is)! Right now, I’m about 2.5 years old and 40 lovable pounds. My age means that I am likely done growing—but no matter how big I get I’ll always think of myself as a lap dog. FOSTER UPDATE: Cutie is the PERFECT houseguest - he is completely potty trained, sleeps quietly in his crate all night, and loves to snuggle. Cutie knows all of his basic commands including - sit, down, stay, and wait. Cutie loves to go on walks around the neighborhood and gets along wonderfully with every dog that he meets. It takes Cutie about 3 minutes to warm up to a new houseguest, with a proper introduction, after that he will give you kisses and love on you for the duration of your stay. FOR MORE PICTURES OF CUTIE PLEASE CHECK HIM OUT ON INSTAGRAM: @PETEYANDFURENDS. I do really well with other dogs as they help me to be confident and brave- because of this, I will need to go to a home with an already existing dog. I will do best in a home without cats or young children. Cutie says: I’ve been daydreaming everyday about my new family, and I've decided I would love to go to a home with some folks that will take me on hikes, runs, and trips to the dog park to play with my canine friends. Woofs and tail wags, CUTIE Like most shelter dogs, Cutie may need a refresher on housetraining. He is likely crate trained. The fee for adoption of this dog is $350 , which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, and spay/neuter.
