Sweet and gentle girl looking for a FUR-ever home! TOMASA HAS AN ADOPTION PENDING- SHE HOPES YOU WILL CONSIDER ADOPTING ONE OF THE OTHER LUCKY PUPS! Name: Tomasa Breed: Terrier Mix Approximate Age: 2 years old Approximate Weight: 47lbs Currently Living at: A shelter in Puerto Rico. Tomasa will be making her way up to the DC area soon to look for her FUR-ever home! Has Lived with: Dogs Special Adoption Considerations: Tomasa has tested positive for Heartworm and is undergoing treatment. Hola! My name is Tomasa and let me tell you- I’ve already had quite the life. I don’t quite know how this happened, but somehow I ended up tied to the front of a scary place called a ‘shelter’. There were a lot of other dogs in cages and it was loud and cold on that cement floor. Then the amazing folks at Lucky Dog came to see me and now I get to travel all the way to the DC area in hopes that someone there will want to take me home. I'm waiting every day for my chance to find someone to love, cuddle, and play with! So a bit about me: I've got a really beautiful and soft grey coat with a white patch on my chest! I've also got big floppy ears- that will do whatever you tell them to (with some proper training, that is)! Right now, I’m about 2 years old and 47 lovable pounds. My age means that I am likely done growing—but no matter how big I get I’ll always think of myself as a lap dog. The folks at the shelter say that I do really well with other dogs and kids. They are not sure how I will interact with cats yet, but the folks at Lucky Dog can try to find out for you if you need to know! I’ve been daydreaming everyday about my new family, and I've decided I would love to go to a home with some folks that will take me on hikes, runs, and trips to the dog park to play with my canine friends. I don’t think I would be able to stop wagging my tail if I had my very own human who will give me lots of belly rubs and get me cool toys to play with. If my new family would take me to obedience classes so that I could use my smarts to learn tons of new tricks that would be amazing. If you think I might be the right dog for you, then please let my adoptions coordinator know! I do hope to hear from you soon! Woofs and tail wags, Tomasa Like most shelter dogs, Tomasa may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. Tomasa has tested positive and has not yet been treated for Heartworm disease. Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. The fee for adoption of a HW positive dog is $450 , which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment. A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Name: Lucy Loo Breed: boxer/shepherd mix Approximate Age: 2-3 years SEX: female Approximate Weight: 50 lbs Has Lived With: dogs and cats and a rabbit! Currently Living at: DC foster Special adoption considerations: none known at this time My name is Lucy Loo. Through no fault of my own, I found myself in the shelter with three puppies (Lewis, Lola and Larry). I am excited to be in DC to find my furever home. I am dreaming of a family who will keep me active and give me lots of opportunities to socialize. I have heard about this place where dogs go to hang out and play...they call it a dog park. I am interested in going to one of these for sure! I also heard that dogs with homes get to go on walks and sleep inside on their very own beds, which sounds pretty great. I have lived with other dogs and cats and they are alright by me. Like most shelter dogs, Lucy Loo may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. Here is an update from my foster family: Lucy Loo is such a sweetheart. She is a very loyal girl who loves her humans and likes to visit with her canine friends. She is out of the puppy stage but did not seem to have any structure prior to coming to Lucky Dog. She is eagerly learning to sit and impress us with her smarts. She is very food driven, making her training easy and fun. Lucy will do best with strong leadership from an owner as she will not hesitate to be queen of the house. She is very playful but certainly a couch potato too. She loves tug-a-war, chewing on her bones, destroying a chew toy, wrestling with other big dogs and playing fetch. Lucy Loo loves her walks but is even more excited to get back on the couch to snuggle back up to us. She went on her first hike at Great Falls last weekend and was up for the challenge- what a rock climber she is! She does well with other dogs off leash. Lucy does amazing in cars as well- the best foster in the car we have ever had! We are so happy to have her in our home and know she will make the perfect addition as a mature mama in her forever family soon. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Washington, DC
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). ***Come meet Judge and other, great adoptable dogs this Sun. (Jan. 15) from 12-2 pm at the Rockville Petco (1507 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD 20852)*** JUDGE NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Judge Breed: Labrador mix Approximate Age: 6-7 yrs. SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 50-55 lbs. Has Lived With: Other dogs and kids Currently Living at: DC foster Special Adoption Considerations: Judge would do best in a home without young children or small dogs. Judge has also suffered a leg injury sometime in his past and is doing well with medications and rehab - his new family should be prepared to continue that. Meet handsome Judge! This sweet guy is a 6-7 year old Labrador mix, weighing in at approximately 55-60 lbs. Judge found himself at a shelter through no fault of his own and is now looking to be your new best friend! Judge can't wait to start a new, better life with someone who loves him. He is a happy, gentle, friendly boy ready for a new forever home! Judge is an older dog, but he still has that typical comedic lab behavior and energy, so his new adopters will need to provide him with plenty of exercise and playtime to keep him happy and healthy! Fun fact: Judge will lie on his back for everyone! Judge's new person or family will need to make sure he gets lots of socialization to keep up the good social skills he has already! And, like all dogs we adopt out, he'll need to go to obedience classes to build a strong bond with his people, and help him become a well behaved companion and family member. Judge seems to like all the people he meets, and can't wait to wiggle his way into your heart and home! Judge does well with other dogs, but he tends to be selective about which dogs he wants as friends. We haven't had the opportunity to test him with cats yet. If you have them, please let us know and we'll do our best to find out! Judge would make a great addition to an existing pack — or he'd love to soak up all the attention as an only dog! FOSTER UPDATE!! Judge is an awesome dog! Though he can be a bit pushy and rude, he is the most devoted, loyal, and loving dog you will ever meet! And when he gives you the sad eyes, he will melt your heart! He is very low key, has great house manners and is wonderful with children. He will be like your shadow and follow you everywhere, hoping to please you. His favorite place is snuggled up with you on the sofa or stretched out next to you for a nap. Skip the dog parks with Judge - other dogs' play-fighting makes him uncomfortable so he tries to intervene and stop them. He gets along well with his sibling fosters. Though he eventually gets grumpy with rambunctious dogs or dogs that try to dominate, he understands puppies and has a lot of patience for them. Please consider Judge if you are looking for an awesome best buddy, and can help him to continue to be his best self!! :) Like most shelter dogs, Judge may need a refresher on house-training. He is likely crate trained. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. SASHA NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Sasha Breed: Australian Shepherd Mix Approximate Age: 2 years Sex: Female Approximate Weight: 33lbs Currently Living at: DC foster Special Adoption Considerations: Sasha prefers not to share her home with other dogs or cats, and would do best with children over 15 years old. I was saying to myself just this morning, "Sasha," I said, "Sasha, you know what you need? You need a person all your own." So I sat down to write this post for the nice people at Lucky Dog, because apparently that's the kind of thing they do - find nice people for extremely intelligent and lovable, doggies who are...I shudder to type this...HOMELESS. That's right: I have no home to call my own. Could you be persuaded to volunteer yours? This little charmer knows she's got it and is not afraid to flaunt it. Sasha seeks a mature and experienced new owner who can meet her every need and spoil her beyond her wildest dreams. Sound like you? This 2 year old spunky, good time girl is intelligent, focused, and learns new tricks quickly. She’s quite the smarty pants and loves to show off her new skills like sit, down, and release for an audience of friends! Being an Aussie mix, Sasha will need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to be a happy and healthy pup. She can't wait to go to obedience training with her new family so that she can bond with her people and become her very best self! Though we don't know why she ended up in the shelter, we know she doesn't belong there! This sweetheart loves the company of her humans but prefers not to share her home with other dogs or cats. She loves playing with toys (especially tennis balls!) and eating yummy treats, but at the end of the day, Sasha loves nothing more than cuddling with the people that love her. Want to make Sasha a part of your family? Fill out an application! Sasha's foster mom says, "She likes to cuddle, be scratched behind her ears and on her belly, give kisses and take naps. Sasha also is playful and loves to chase balls, a frisbee, and her own tail. She is super loyal once she bonds with her people. She is a good house guest who respects her boundaries (she doesn't jump on furniture unless invited or chew anything other than her toys). Sasha also does very well in her crate." Here is a cute video of Sasha being a goofball: https://youtu.be/-3kDvL2ZDVI The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. Name: Purvis Breed: Lab Mix Approximate Age: 3 years old Approximate Weight: 60 lbs Currently Living at: Foster. Purvis needs a forever home! Has Lived with: Dogs Special Adoption Considerations: Needs a second dog, High Energy, Has some stranger danger issues especially around men- will need an adopter who is willing to work with him on this Purvis is a sweet 60 pound, crate trained, goofy Lab Mix who is 3 years old. He is very playful, active and has a curious personality and will need mental and physical stimulation on a daily basis. Playing with other dogs is his favorite thing to do. Whether it's out in public, a dog park or a doggy daycare he loves all dogs. Sometimes he needs a slow introduction to puppies because he is practically still a puppy himself but doesn't understand that his size and demeanor can be scary to the little ones! Most of the time after an introduction, he plays great with them (puppies). He enjoys walks, jogs, hikes, swimming, chasing soccer balls and playing in the snow! After a nice walk or playing, Purvis loves to lay on the floor or walks into his crate and chew on a bone while you relax. Sometimes he has a mind of his own when he sees a squirrel or another furry friend. Purvis knows most of the basic commands and some tricks too: - Sit - Stay - Come - Leave It - Let Go - Down - Heel - Break(Free) - Off - Away - Get Busy(Bathroom) - Crate(Bed) - Shake - Roll Over Purvis will need a committed owner to provide more training and exercise because he is a very smart and energetic dog. He will need a patient and experienced dog owner to remind him who the leader is in the family. He is intelligent, so he will learn to follow your rules quickly but he needs someone with a firm grasp of pack leadership in order to respond positively to training. Unfortunately, Purvis was not properly socialized as a puppy and is a bit shy and scared in new settings and around new people. He loves everyone but is a big scaredy cat in certain situations and would do really well living in a home that already has another dog to help Purvis learn the ropes of how to be a confident pup. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations. Meet Citrus, Sweet Plott Hound Longing for a Special Home CITRUS NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! If you are viewing Citrus' bio on Petfinder, please click below for more information! Name: Citrus Breed: Plott Hound mix Approximate Age: 1.5 years Approximate Weight: 62 lbs. Currently Living at: Boarding facility. Please adopt Citrus! At the tender of age of 1.5 years old, Citrus found herself without a family to call her own. This beautiful lady has since been living in a rural shelter and now calls a Washington, DC boarding facility "home". Citrus has been described as a Plott hound mix and clearly has the instincts of a scent hound. Our guess is that Citrus has a dose of mastiff in her, which we can see in her slight jowls. Her coat is a beautiful black/brown brindle, with a striking white chest. She has a tall, leggy stance, and weighing in at 62 pounds, she is a very strong girl. She is an athletic dog and loves to run and jump. She will need someone experienced with dogs to take a chance on her and show her the world is a safe, fun place! She has made a lot of friends during her shelter stay. She's impressed the staff with her pleasing personality and earned a good behavior rating. Citrus would do well in a calm, but active family. She could easily assimilate into the active lifestyle of a single adopter or couple who have the time to focus on a young dog's needs. Citrus could easily join a multi-dog home, with one or two well-trained dogs. She would do best in a home without children. Like most shelter dogs, Citrus may need a refresher on housetraining. Posted Breed: Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Sweet boy looking for a second chance with YOU! SECOND CHANCE NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Second Chance Breed: Boxer Mix Approximate Age: 3 years SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 55 lbs Has Lived With: Other Dogs Currently Living at: A cold and scary shelter in South Carolina. Second Chance is looking for a foster home, or even better yet, a FUR-ever home! Special adoption considerations: Second Chance is Heartworm Positive but has already been treated and is happily recovering. Hi there! My name is Second Chance and let me tell you- I’ve already had quite the life. The folks at the shelter gave me my name because when they found me, I was in really rough shape. I was super skinny and pretty neglected, but thats all finally behind me. The amazing folks at Lucky Dog tell me that I get to travel all the way to the DC area in hopes that someone there will want to take me home. I'm waiting every day for my (second) chance to find someone to love, cuddle, and play with! So a bit about me: I've got a really beautiful and soft all white coat with a black nose! I've also got big pointy ears- that will do whatever you tell them to (with some proper training, that is)! Right now, I’m about 3 years old and 55 lovable pounds. My age means that I am likely done growing—but no matter how big I get I’ll always think of myself as a lap dog. The folks at the shelter say that I do really well with other dogs. They are not sure how I will interact with kids or cats yet, but the folks at Lucky Dog can try to find out for you if you need to know! Woofs and tail wags, Second Chance Like most shelter dogs, Second Chance may need a refresher on housetraining. He is likely crate trained. Second Chance has tested positive and has been treated for for Heartworm disease. Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. The adoption fee for this dog is $450, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment. Posted Breed: Beagle / Mixed (medium coat). Please contact Lowell Nelson (lowelln@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet. Sweet Mellow Girl GRACIE NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Gracie Breed: Beagle Mix Approximate Age: 5-6 yrs SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 25 lbs Has Lived With: Other dogs, kids Currently Living at: Shelter--needs a foster, or better yet, a forever home! Meet Gracie! This sweet girl is a beagle mix, weighing in at approximately 25 pounds. Gracie found herself at the shelter through no fault of her own and is looking for a forever family to give her the love and attention he deserves! Could it be yours? Gracie’s had a little rough patch—she had a benign mammary mass removed, and will be treated for heart worm (see details below). She needs a loving home to take care of her. We think she’d be great for someone getting their first dog. Gracie has reached her mellow years, but still will need plenty of exercise to keep her fit! She’d love to go on long walks and hikes, and take trips to the dog park so she can socialize with her canine friends. And of course, upon returning home, she’d love to shower her new forever family with plenty of cuddles and kisses! Gracie gets along great with kids and other dogs. We haven't had a chance to see her interact with cats yet. If you have them, let us know, and we'll do our best to find out. Gracie is also looking forward to attending obedience school to further hone her doggie manners and impress her new family. Like most shelter dogs, Gracie may need a refresher on house-training. She is likely crate trained. Gracie hopes you will want to take him home with you! Gracie has tested positive and will be treated for Heartworm disease. Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Please contact Allison Tebbe (allisont@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet. Gorgeous bully girl needs a home! MOLLIE TOO NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Mollie Too Breed: Am Staff/Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix Approximate Age: 3 years 8 months as of 2/2016 Approximate Weight: 50 lbs Currently Living at: Foster home in DC area! HI, I'M MOLLIE TOO! My previous owners left me at my wonderful dog sitters home and never came back, so now I'm looking for my real forever family while I stick around their house for a while. I'm learning so much already in my foster home and I get so excited to learn and play! I LOVE TOYS SO MUCH. Also I've already done place training and I know how to sit, stay, come, shake, and wait! I even have great recall and am comfortable in my crate - how great is that?? I like swimming, hiking, running, fetching, jumping, and everything in between so I need an ACTIVE forever family to keep me physically and mentally exhausted every day. I live to please my humans and would love my owner to be a strong leader who can guide me in what to do. I promise we'll have so much fun!! I would especially love a job like a dog sport (agility?? fly ball?!) so I can impress you with how athletic and smart I am. At the end of the day, I really just want to snuggle up with my human(s), get some ear scratchies, and be told how much I am loved. As a bully breed a lot of people judge me by my looks and misunderstand me - I have SO MUCH love to give, all I want to do is please you and cover you in kisses...promise! Like most bully breed pups I am silly and have lots of personality to show you. Check out these videos of me (plus the one below my pictures) so you can get an idea of all the fun I love to have: Swimming: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-DsawhiKFQ&feature=youtu.be Trying to eat wind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0o73BX2xfMk&feature=youtu.be Playing with a big ball I found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTXiaXLohaQ&feature=youtu.be I currently live and get along with a cat, so I am happy to live with a feline friend! I can be a little feisty with my dog friends (especially ones with personalities just like mine) so it's probably best I am an only pup who can soak up aaaaall of your attention. I do love kids but due to some minor food guarding I'm working on, it's best I live with kids middle school age and older who can fully understand my boundaries. As a super smart and athletic pup, I'd love to continue to do training for years to come so I can be the best behaved pup on the block. If you have the time and the energy for a big love muffin like me in your life, please email my adoption coordinator! I love my fosters parents but I'd really love to be in a forever home, could it be yours?? When transitioning to a new environment, Mollie Too may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter.
