If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hello, my name is Wimpy (definitely not a name I chose and some of the volunteers don't like it either so they call me Wally - but Gail still calls me Wimpy!) who is believed to be 6-1/2 years old as of February 2017. The vet doesn't really know what breeds I have in me so I am listed as a "medium mix" but I think I look like a Terrier mix. I weigh approximately 25 pounds. I am a super friendly boy and I want to be your best buddy. I am learning how to walk on a leash, but darn it, sometimes I like to just fall down and roll over on my back for some tummy rubs! I am trustworthy to stay in the yard at the rescue so I have free reign when outside. I will adapt to whatever your living situation is though. I was found abandoned and rescue by some nice people. No family came forward so I arrived at Gail's Pets. I am meeting all of the volunteers and the other dogs here. It's a nice place but I'd really like a family to call my own. Perhaps that would be with you? Wally (Wimpy) resides at a rescue organization in Arkansas. Please contact Gail Ross at 870-431-8229, or via email at gailspets@hotmail.com to discuss this dog. You can find our adoption application by going to www.Gailspets.org and clicking on the Adoption Application tab. The application, when completed and submitted, will be electronically sent to Gail’s email address. Posted Breed: Boxer / Mastiff / Mixed (short coat). Big Boy! Hi there. My name is Brady. I am thought to be a young male Boxer/Mastiff mix. Of course that is just a guess as I wandered up to a house last fall and the nice people tried to find my family. When no one came forward they tried to find someone to adopt me, but again no one came forward so they contact Gail's Pets and I arrived here. The people told Gail that I got along well with their big dog, but not medium and little dogs. I LOVE people. I love going for walks although I am very strong on a leash. I'm trying really really hard to learn my manners. (I am walked with a pinch collar on because I am strong and several of the volunteer dog walks have had shoulder surgery so....) I am looking for a family to call my own. I sure hope that is with you. Brady resides at a rescue organization in Arkansas. I've been at the shelter for over a year and I guess they forgot to put me online for everybody up East to see. So - here I am!! I am a very sweet Chihuahua mix weighing around 18 pounds and I get along with everybody. My most favorite things to do are cuddle and go for walks. I sure hope there is someone out there that will give me a chance to add to their lives. How about you? Casper resides at a rescue organization in Arkansas.
