If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

I just arrived at Gail's Pets along with my 6 littermates. I was rescued by a neighbor of my owners after she discovered my mom and us were not being taken care of. My fur started out to be black with some white markings, but all of a sudden I'm getting some grey/light brown markings by my shoulders, that is why they included a picture of my side. I am a very friendly puppy with my tail always wagging. I love to cuddle with the volunteers here at the rescue and I also love running and playing with my littermates. And, I LOVE the water! I am looking for my own family and home and I sure hope that is with you. These pictures were just taken on 9/3/2017 and just so you know, I'm a cuddler! I'm listed as a terrier mix because the people here just don't know what breeds I am. I just a cute girl! When I first arrived at the shelter I got very sick the next day. I actually had Parvo. I was immediately taken to the vet and spent 3 weeks fighting for my life. The kind people there took such good care of me and I pulled through. I am very healthy now and have gained weight. I am a nice girl. I am currently sharing a pen with a female dog and we had some issues at first but are best buddies now. I love going for walks. Posted Breed: Mountain Cur / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Hello. My name is Carter. I am a male dog estimated to be 2 years old and a Mountain Cur mix. (Perhaps with a little bit of Labrador - just a guess.) I recently arrived at Gail's Pets after having been found abandoned. I arrived with another dog that appears to be my littermate (Cash). The people here at the rescue were told by the people who found us that they had had us for 2 months but no family came forward. They said we got along fine until a couple of days before they contacted Gail. When I first arrived here I was afraid of everyone. I would lay in a corner and growl, but I would not snap. Anyway, everyone took their time with me and spent time approaching me slowly. I think I was just scared of everything and everyone being so new. But now my tail is always wagging. I love all of the volunteers and I especially love going for walks. I am looking for a home where I can be king - meaning no other dogs. So far I'm not a fan of other dogs so it would be best. Perhaps you'd like to call Gail and speak with her about me. I am a sweetheart and will be your best buddy. Carter resides at a rescue organization in Arkansas.
