If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Hi. My name is Hank. I am an adult male dog estimated to be 5 years old and a Boxer mix. The people at the rescue don't think I'm quite that old, but that is what the vet estimated. I was found abandoned and wandering along a rural road. After an exhaustive search to find my family no one came forward. So, I arrived at Gail's Pets. I am a friendly boy who can be a little shy right at first, but boy, I sure warm right up after that and I will be your best friend. I love to be scratched behind my ears, and when I'm happy, which is like always, my whole body wags, but not my tail as I don't have one - fully docked. I am looking for a home to call my own. Perhaps that might be with you. Hank resides at a rescue organization in Arkansas. Please contact Gail Ross at 870-431-8229, or via email at gailspets@hotmail.com to discuss this dog. You can find our adoption application by going to www.Gailspets.org and clicking on the Adoption Application tab. I was found wandering along a road. My family was located but they don't want me back, sad I know. They said my father was actually a Dingo. I am super friendly. I get along with everyone whether two legged or four legged. I love to go for walks and I love to give hugs and kisses. I am estimated to be eight years old so my teeth are not the best. Otherwise I am healthy and heartworm negative. I have been spayed and I'm up to date on those nasty shots! So, if you are looking for a friendly boy whose tail is always wagging, that is me! Hi, my name is Hope and I am a female Australian Shepherd/Heeler mix puppy born the first part of August 2017. I just arrived at Gail's Pets along with my 7 littermates. The family that has my mom couldn't keep all of us. I am a very friendly puppy with my tail - on wait - I don't have a tail - my whole body wags. I have one blue eye and one brown eye. I love to cuddle with the volunteers here at the rescue and I also love running and playing with my littermates. I am looking for my own family and home and I sure hope that is with you. I still need to have my remaining "puppy" shots including my rabies shot, so I can't leave the rescue until the beginning of December 2017. I hope you understand and are willing to wait for me! But don't delay in filling out an application because I'm so cute I'm going to get taken fast. Hope resides at a rescue organization in Arkansas. Posted Breed: Border Collie / Anatolian Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Beautiful, beautiful girl Hi. My name is Lisa and I am a female dog estimated to be 15 months old (as of November 2017) and a Border Collie/Anatolian Shepherd/Livestock Guard dog mix. I arrived at the rescue in early August after having showed up at some people's house. After an exhaustive search no family was found. They kept me for about a month and then brought me to the rescue. When I arrived at the rescue I was pregnant, perhaps by the people's dog whose house I wandered up to. He was an English Shepherd, but the vet isn't sure he is the dad. Anyway, I gave birth to ten puppies on August 30, 2017. Unfortunately two of them didn't make it, but the other eight are all healthy and have been pre-adopted and will be joining their new families in early December. I am looking for a family to call my own. I weight approximately 74 pounds. I am very friendly and love everybody I meet. I love to play, go for walks, and I'm told I have the most docile, calm disposition. I think I would do best in a house with lots of land to run on. No apartments for me, sorry. My mom is a Mastiff and my dad is a "question mark!" I think I might have some Hound or Boxer in me too, but of course that is just a guess. I recently arrived at the rescue along with my littermates Clyde and Bonnie. My mom and myself and littermates were found abandoned at a house after people moved away. A nice lady did contact them, but they said they didn't want us anymore. Isn't that the saddest thing you've ever heard. I have met the volunteers and other dogs. I am a friendly girl. All the animals in his apartment building were smal.ler then he is and were found alive. He is very friendly, loves people and loves children. He has lived in Joplin since Jan. 9, 2011, just 18 weeks or so before the tornado. He was possibly seen at Junge Stadium at 6:40 pm on Saturday July 23, by someone saying they saw a dog with an orange collar. They were walking to the Guitar Bar and Grill and then saw Harley's photo and said they were sure it was him! Harley is also posted as a lost dog on Amber Alerts for Pets and Find My Animal, both have Facebook pages.
