Posted Breed: Plott Hound / Terrier (medium coat). Barley is a cute little puppy who was born in our care over two months ago. The mom is a beautiful petite plott hound mix. She made some very interesting looking puppies! We don't think they will be huge but they won't be small breed dogs! Barley is a cute long hair brindle!

Plott Hound

A.K.A. : Plott, Plotthund
Overview: The Plott hound was bred by the Plott family beginning in the mid 1700s. The breed was used for tracking raccoons and bear in the mountains. The breed is seen only in the eastern USA and is generally used by hunters.
Breed Group: Hound
Weight (lbs): 51-60
Height (in): 20-24
Colors: brindle and blue
Coat: The coat is short and thick
Character: The Plott hound is clever, loyal and loving.
Temperament: The Plott hound gets along very well with children and other dogs.
Care: The Plott hound needs to be bathed infrequently and brushed occasionally. Keep the ears clean to avoid infections.
Training: The Plott hound should be given obedience and leash training. If used for hunting, it should be trained for this purpose.
Activity: This breed needs a lot of exercise. They like to run in open spaces, but should be kept a fenced yard to prevent them from tracking animals and getting lost.
Country of Origin: USA
Health Issue: Gastric problems from over eating; can be avoided by giving smaller quantities of food more often and waiting before exercise after meals.
Life Expectancy: 12-14

More About Plott Hound Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Sanford, FL
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Lady was pulled from the local animal shelter. She was in the cage with another younger chihuahua that we were pulling and she just looked so sad. God knows why she was at the shelter at her age...but we have her and she is safe now. She just needs a warm doggy bed to sleep in and some gentle pets in her old age! Foster update: Lady is 12 years old and 12 pounds of sweetness. She is the submissive type and timid at first but warms up quickly. She loves to sit by you or in her crate and is happy knowing someone is in the room. She is great with dogs, big and small and great with cats. Her foster has 3 cats and Lady pays them no attention and is very friendly to them. She barely barks only when a new person comes into the house. She enjoys riding in the car and will sit on your lap while driving if you let her. She even will nudge your hand so you will pet her. She has a pep to her step in the mornings and likes to burrow in a blanket and run around wagging her tail when she's being peppy. Most times she just enjoys lounging around and being near someone. She will make someone a very good loyal companion.

      Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Sanford, FL
Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier (short coat). Foster Update: Daisy is an empathetic snuggle-bear! She’s that rare sort of pup who is so thoughtful, and cares so much about how others feel, that she could easily become one of the most important 'people' in your life. She doesn't let her slight heart murmur effect her one bit! If the kids have a bad day at school she’ll come thump-thump-thumping over to you with her big Chewbacca paws and then sit her soft, shiny self in your lap – oomph! That’s a lot to hold in your lap! And does she love to be held!! This 70lb dog is convinced she's a tiny pup. She loves to play and snuggle with everyone! Well, except some dogs bigger than her. She needs a slow introduction to pooches her size or larger. She still acts like a pup when meeting other dogs and has no sense of personal space. The bigger pooches don't always like it and when they let her know she reacts defensively. But other than that, she loves everyone. You should see her with the puppies! I think she'd adopt them all if she could. She even watches to make sure I feed them all before she settles in for her own dinner. Daisy is a 3 yr old lovable & energenic staffordshire terrier. She was rescued at 12 weeks old by her orginal family. She was found on the side of the road scared and timid. Daisy is great with kids and family. She is fully potty trained, and has been through a basic command training course. Daisy roams the house daily, never chews on anything other than toys or treats and does not sit on furniture or beds. She is well mannered, loves attention, going on walks & runs, loves to play and snuggle. Daisy has only been socialized with her companion (an adult rottie who was already adopted) and she is acting defensively to other medium and large breed dogs. She can be with other dogs in the home but must have a very slow introduction. She is currently fostered with another large breed dog who is also looking for a home. Daisy and her companion (who has already adopted) have been surrendered due to the baby having a really bad allergic reaction to them. It has come to a point where the doctor has told them the baby can not go near the dogs and everything needs to be deep cleaned. Daisy has a heart murrur but this does not affect her daily life. She is pretty high energy and loves to play!

      Breed: Labrador Retriever
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Sanford, FL
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Hound (short coat). Foster Update: Meet Clarissa. Clarissa came from OCAS at 50 days pregnant and gave birth on Nov. 2nd to 12 Puppies. All of her puppies have found their furever homes and now she is ready to find her own family. Clarissa may be between 3-5 years old, HW positive and her teeth are worn out, but that doesn't stop her from having a great appetite and play just like any younger pup. Watch out puppies, Clarissa will out run to and steal all your toys. That is Clarissa's joy to have as many toys as she can, but will last just a few days. Clarissa is potty and crate trained, and a great guard dog; she can detect anyone coming to the door, no need for visitors to ring the bell. Clarissa is very lovable, dog friendly (any type of dog and any age) and human friendly. Very sociable and loves to be cuddled and hugged. Clarissa was rescued from a high kill shelter super preganat and super skinny. She has since had her babies and is a happy playful adult dog. She currently lives with several other dogs in her foster home and just loves to play. She would do well in a multi dog home or one where she can get lots of exercise. Clarissa is housebroken and crate trained. Clarissa is Heartworm positive but is being treated via the slow kill method.

Chico is not great with other dogs, he will bark at them even when walking. He will do best as an only dog and with a fenced yard so he doesn’t have to be walked. Chico is such a sweet boy to his people, he will make someone a great companion, but without young kids around, just because he is temperamental with new people. Location: Sanford, FL
Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier (short coat). Autumn was rescued as a very prego mamma dog. Lucky she held out till she was in the safety of our foster home and gave birth to some healthy babies who have now looking there furever home! Autumn currently lives in a multi dog foster home and gets along well with big and small dogs. she is housebroken and crate trained! Meet Autumn...she is a pure bred American Staffordshire Terrier. She came to us scared and heavily pregnant looking for a safe place to have her babies. She found a home that was quiet and had other well behaved puppies that gave her a sense of security. Slowly this momma opened up and showed what a loving and playful puppy she can be. Autumn is looking for an understanding and quiet home who will go slowly with her to build the trust she needs to come out of her shell. Autumn does best were there is another cofident dog in the home therefore we would want her to go to a home with at least one other dog.
