Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? none noted. Weight: Estimated 5-6 lbs Height: Estimated 8" at the shoulder. Adoption Fee: $269 Fence needed? Yes! also should only be leashed walked until he is comfortable with his home environment. What kind of home would be best for me? Nicholas needs a home with someone that has a soft place for dogs that need work. He needs a home that is willing to get him out of his comfort zone and socialize him. What is my personality like? The best way to describe Nicholas is that he is completely nervous outside of his comfort zone or with new people. This dog will have to have a lot of work to make him some-what sociable. It will truly take dedication to work with him but in the end it will be beyond worth it. Nicholas (when he is comfortable with you) is a true, sweet lap dog. Once he trusts you he does not want to leave your lap! Even though he has anzious behavior he has not shown any aggression what so ever. In all reality he is a soft - hearted boy looking for someone to help him reach his full potential. How I act when I first meet new people: Unsure and anxious. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. My age: Estimate birth date 9/12/2015 Please note - we do not ship dogs. If you are interested in adopting, please take a look at the distance between the foster home location and your location and make sure you are willing to make that trip. To apply, please visit our webpage at www.carolinapoodlerescue.org and visit the tab on the left that directions you to the online application. Please note that when screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. It is very difficult to get to know a living animal from a picture and a short description. Since we are constantly getting in new dogs, this may be a dog not in our listings yet. We want you to be very happy with your new companion and will make suggestions based on what you tell us about you. More About Poodle (Miniature) Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Yes - Diabetes Insipidus Weight: 13 lbs Height: est 13" Adoption Fee: I'm special Fence needed? Yes - Buckles is very active and loves to run. What does Diabetes Insipidus mean? Buckles drinks water - all day - and urinates frequently as a result. This is a rare form of diabetes that is caused by a deficiency of the pituitary hormone (vasopressin) which regulates kidney function. This disorder is very uncommon and is not curable. Here is what happens in the body -Buckles kidney's do not produce the hormone that neutralizes toxins in the body thereby making urine. Her kidney's can accept water but can't process it correctly. Water passes through her body very quickly and that is why she peees so much but often her "urine" is just pure water that has passed through. It does not have a urine odor at all and if you wipe it up there is no yellow to it. It is not what is called concentrated. Her body uses water but Buckles has to consume much more water than a normal dog for her body to get what it needs while her system is pushing it out much faster than it should. Imagine a water hose in the summer running full blast - and your drinking from it. You can get what you need - and Buckles body grabs what it needs from this rush of water going through it - but much of the water is wasted and therefore run on the ground just like our summer water hose. Your body functions more like a glass. Her body functions like that hose. Because of this rapid rush of water, Buckles must have access to water at all times so when she needs it,she can get it. If not she will dehydrate and that will lead to death. Buckles is currently on a hormone-replacement medication (given through eye drops twice per day). It is the hormone she is lacking that makes the urine. It is helping a little but we do not know how much. We are working with her to find out what is the best dosage for her. The medication is about $120 per month. What is my personality like? All that sounds frightening and it is but there is more to Buckles than bad plumbing. Buckles is spunky, friendly and loving. She is energetic and must have a fenced in yard to run in. She gets along with other dogs and cats - and would be a great playmate to another dog her size or larger. Buckles is eager to please and bonds quickly. Buckles does have a "house training" issue only because of her condition. For someone who is retired and is home all the time, her house training isn't much of a problem. She must be taken outside every two hours, and her house training is basically controlled. She would love a house with a doggie door. She goes to the door in her foster home if she needs to go out. She wears diapers if her foster mom is going out more than 2 hours. Buckles cannot be deprived of water as it can be fatal to her. How I act when I first meet new people: Happy, friendly and gregarious. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. Posted Breed: Old English Sheepdog / Poodle (Standard) (long coat). Meet Sherlock! Breed: Shep a doodle - old english sheepdog and standard poodle mix Gender: male Date into Rescue: 7/31/14 Reason for being in rescue: Owner release, can't handle Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? YES -Behavior Fence needed? Yes Weight: Est 50 lbs Height: Est 25 " Adoption fee: $329 Age: birthdater 10/6/2009 (Please understand that these are rescued dogs, and sometimes their ages are only a guess. We go with what we are told) What is my personality like? Sherlock's sad past history of shock-collar training (since he was a year old until he came to us, Sherlock wore an electric shock training collar at all times) makes me cry every time I think of it. This is abuse plain and simple - to be continually shocked for the slightest transgression would drive me crazy too. Sherlock developed some bad, and quite frankly, sad, habits. After being assessed by a trainer, we believe it will take a very long time - possibly years to undo the damage that has been done to this guy. He is very strong on a leash but will walk alongside you, especially when he is wearing a harness. Sherlock is a bright dog with many skills. Cues he knows include : sit, wait (stay), up (stand up from laying down), down (to lay down), leave-it (walk away from whatever it is he's smelling, eating, doing etc.), kennel (go to his kennel), heel, here (his recall/come). There are a few other commands that he knew like "place" and "look sharp" but the previous owner did not reinforce these commands. Sherlock does have some issues with resource guarding , especially inside of his crate over his food bowl. This is most evident when other dogs approach him. Our caregiver can now put his bowl in his crate with no issues. This is a huge improvement from when he first came here. Also, according to what his previous owner witnessed with him, he does not like to be approached while he is lying down. He will growl, show teeth and or bite. We have not seen this at the farm, however farm-life and home-life are two different things, and he may resort to this behavior again once he is back in a home. Also according to his behavior with his previous owner, he could not be bathed or groomed without a muzzle. At first, we were able to do both without a muzzle here, but again he is out of his comfort zone, and sometimes dog's do not show their "true nature" until they are comfortable. A few months into his stay with CPR, he did get wild during grooming and we chose to get him shaved down under sedation but we're going to try again. We have had two bite incidents at the farm with Sherlock. In both cases, Sherlock warned the caregiver repeatedly and the warning one time was ignored and the second time, Sherlock had a rag wrapped around his foot and it was cutting off circulation. Our caregiver was a new one and did not know he had time to call for help so he tried to remove the rag himself. It was painful and Sherlock snapped at him In both cases, the bite broke skin but did not require stitches or a doctor's visit. On a positive note, Sherlock is a happy, affectionate dog. There is much more to him than some bad habits, he loves attention and he loves to be petted. Sherlock is house and crate trained, and is VERY well mannered indoors. He really is a sweet dog who could make someone a wonderful companion, if you are are strong dog leader who understands this dog must always be closely monitored and whose energy must be drawn to positive activities. He loves to run and would make a great jogging or hiking companion. Update: Sherlock is absolutely brilliant. I believe Sherlock would do wonderful with a dog trainer or someone who has a adequate amount of experience with temperamental dogs. Sherlock truly wants to be loved and have a owner, but his past makes it hard for him to put his trust in anyone. With a little bit of work, patience, and time he could be a amazing dog to have. He is extremely dog selective, does not like most dogs! He needs to go to a home where he will be the only dog. Who I am seeking: Because of his behavior, we understand Sherlock may be with for the rest of his life so he is available for virtual adoption and is seeking sponsors to help us afford to care for him. If you hate shocking dogs as much as I do, then consider Sherlock as your virtually adoptable favorite guy. Thinking you can handle him? We have requirements for Sherlock. He must be adopted by someone who is a very experienced dog-owner. Preferably someone who has experience with the breed and with the behaviors that we are describing. He must be an only dog - other animals overwhelm him and spark some of these bad habits of his. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture, and not to discriminate against older dogs. You never know which dog will steal your heart when you meet them! Please note - we do not ship dogs. If you are interested in adopting, please take a look at the distance between the foster home location and your location and make sure you are willing to make that trip. Opie is a very special guy - he survived heartworm treatment and is now clear! Monthly Heartguard is essential to his continued health and well being Weight: est 45 lbs Height: est 22" Adoption Fee: $200 Fence needed: he would love one - or lots and lots and lots of running and play time! Opie is a goofy hound mix with a loving and playful disposition. He loves to play with toys, especially tennis balls. He gets along well with other dogs and loves to go outside and play with his many canine companions. Opie and his other hound friends love to engage in rough play and Opie likes to growl a lot when he plays, but it is all in good fun! Opie knows how to sit, and is also crate trained and runs right in his crate. Opie loves people and always greets them cheerfully. He has a heart of gold and is extremely loyal to his people. He is so deserving of a forever home... Opie came to CPR severely underweight, dehydrated, and a victim of neglect and abuse. We put him on a strict diet to gain weight and prevent refeeding syndrome and slowly nursed Opie back to a healthy weight. Despite his condition, Opie was (and still is), very loving and upbeat, wanting to play with his tennis ball while out on potty breaks. Opie does resource guard his food, but considering his past of not knowing when his next meal would come it's not surprising that he would be protective of his food. The perfect home for Opie would be an experienced adopter that will continue to work and train with him through his resource guarding issues. Opie would love an active owner to go for daily walks, hikes or jogs. He would do well in a home with another large dog to play with or as an only dog! House trained? He can only eat rabbit kibble. Weight: est 18 lbs Height: est 12" at the shoulder Adoption Fee: $200.00 Fence needed No but he would enjoy a fenced in yard or some place to go play off leash a couple of times a week What kind of home would be best for me? Alfie came to CPR with hardly any hair and sarcoptic mange. After months of treatment, he was still having issues with his skin so off to vet he went. The vet's office staff decided they liked having Alfie around so much that they are fostering him until he gets adopted. On top of the mange, Alfie also has food allergies, and is now only able to eat rabbit based kibble. We are unsure of Alfie's true breeds. The breeds we listed are our best guess based on his looks and behavior. Alfie has grown a lot of his hair back, but we don't know if he is partly Chinese crested or if his skin is just so badly damaged that his hair just won't grow back in certain spots. Alfie has shown some resource guarding and would thrive best with an experienced patient adopter that can work with him on this issue. He guards his toys, bed, and his home. He would do best in a home with few visitors and no children. What is my personality like? Alfie is one smart boy! He knows how to sit and twirl, and he is a fairly quick study, especially when treats are involved. Alfie absolutely loves to play with toys, but he has shown some resource guarding with his toys so he needs to have some rules and structure when it comes to playtime. Alfie is determined, intelligent, independent, and loving. How I act when I first meet new people: Alfie is finicky with new people. He likes some new people and others he does not like. She was adopted and returned because she was possessive over food - in the shelter and at the poodle farm, Bella has had no issues whatsoever. Please note, we feed Bella in her crate so she knows her safe place can't be messed with. With no history of aggression we placed Bella but sadly her food aggression returned. We're now looking for a dog savvy owner who can work with food/resource guarding and understands that this is an ongoing management issue. Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? overweight Weight: 38 lbs needs to be 25 Height: about 14 inches at the shoulder Adoption Fee: $229 Fence needed? No Bella was turned into a local southern shelter by her owners because they said she was becoming aggressive with the grandkids. She was adopted from the shelter and returned for being possessive over food. Bella then came to us here at CPR and despite multiple attempts we could never trigger these behaviors. Bella was adopted from us and again returned for aggressively guarding the couch and biting the man. Basically, Bella is resource guarding, she is protecting any item she feels is valuable, (food, bones, beds, etc) and is afraid approaching people are going to take it away. Bella needs a home with someone that is experienced and willing to work with her on this issue. She needs a confident leader that will be consistent and give her lots and lots of structure. Bella would greatly benefit from basic obedience training, especially the place, out (give or drop it), and leave it commands. What kind of home would be best for me? Bella needs an owner who understands that food is NOT love, that loving a dog means providing the right balance of food, exercise, and direction. She would love a walking partner and friend. Absolutely no children. We don't know what happened in her first home but do not want to give her or children a chance to interact together in ways that may hurt Bella. Bella's best home will be one that is quiet, thoughtful, experienced and understands that she will not "get better" or "get over" resource guarding but it can be controlled. I think Bella would do best with a laid back, canine companion to help her learn to romp and play. Exercise is always more fun with a friend. However, she would be fine as an only dog also. What is my personality like? Very laid back - Bella has gotten a bit chunky since staying with us. We now have her on a diet. How I act when I first meet new people: Bella says hello and then goes about her business. She does not force affection on you but will happily be part of the group . House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. My age: Est birthdate 3/11/2009 Caregiver updates 2.3.2017....from caregiver Melissa: Thurs afternoon, I chose to spend my time with Bella. Unfortunately, Bella has become the "poster dog" for the overweight. She has become the topic of fat jokes. I enjoyed her company Thurs afternoon. Granted she did have her "sniffer" on the food factor, but she was so easy to get along with. She readily made herself at home in my car. She wasn't affected by any dog or activity in the admin offices. She was patient when I went inside to clean Salems box, she was patient when I put the admin dogs up. I felt comfortable with her. She was Bella. Don't sell her short. I really really really enjoyed her company. Please note - we do not ship dogs. If you are interested in adopting, please take a look at the distance between the foster home location and your location and make sure you are willing to make that trip. To apply, please visit our webpage at www.carolinapoodlerescue.org and visit the tab on the left that directions you to the online application. Please note that when screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, color, age, etc. Others here may be a better fit for you. It is very difficult to get to know a living animal from a picture and a short description. Since we are constantly getting in new dogs, this may be a dog not in our listings yet. We'll add you to our mailing list. thanks the CPR Adoption team Date into Rescue: 12/27/15 Reason for being in rescue: Found as a stray Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? No Weight: est 40 lbs Height: growing Adoption Fee: $200 Fence needed? Preferred, she needs good exercise daily. What kind of home would be best for me? Deanna is a happy, goofy big puppy! She is friendly and loves everyone. She would do great in many different environments. Although we have not seen her around kids, we feel she would be a great addition to a family with kids; she keeps us on our toes! She is very loving and affectionate, and pretty calm for a puppy. She and her brother are best friends and we think she would do great with another dog in the home. Deanna recently spent one-on-one time with a caregiver and he shared: "Deanna needs a lot of work on a leash. She will chew on them. She loved playing outside. While inside she was mostly focused on playing with the crated dogs. She is a serious love bug and will have no problem becoming connected to an adopter." UPDATE: 10/11/2016 We cant help but wonder why Miss Deanna is still here! This girl has made huge improvement since she has came in. She no longer pulls on the leash unless something catches her attention. She can sit on command is highly treat motivated so teaching her commands would be easy with time. Deanna is dog selective.. she only likes certain dogs and she must be the leader with her doggy friends. When she is with other dogs, she is a completely different dog and becomes a robust, playful dog. Alone, she just wants to sniff everywhere while being by your side. Deanna is extremely loyal and can be your constant best friend if you let her. How I act when I first meet new people: Friendly House trained? Yes - for her safety. Nadia has never lived in suburbia, she will need introduce to this world and a fence will keep her safe What kind of home would be best for me? One that wants a project, one that understands this dog does not have the background yet to be a pet. None known Weight: 8 Height: 10" Adoption Fee: $200 Fence needed? No What kind of home would be best for me? Sadly we do not have much history on Sabrina, however if her behavior is indicative of her past...it was not a positive one. I will never forget the day we picked her up. We were actually going to the shelter to pick up another few dogs, and we saw Sabrina. She was hairless, crusty and absolutely petrified....and of course, on the Euthanasia list. Touching her bare-handed was not an option. We got her back to the farm where we started making progress. We treated her skin for allergies and it took several months but she has finally grown a full coat back!! She is great with other dogs and has turned into a happy gal. She has also done well walking on a leash for our caregivers! Sabrina needs someone who is familiar with chihuahuas as she has a few quirks. Once she trusts you, she is a breeze to deal with. Sabrina only snaps if she gets very frightened (which happens less and less as time goes on). She has never actually bitten anyone. Sabrina is a sweetheart who is full of life and would really thrive with some one on one attention! We hope to find her a forever family, as almost 10 months has gone by and she is now ready! UPDATE: Sabrina is becoming more confident everyday. She is such a sweet girl, and does not have one mean bone in her body. Sometimes when you pick her her up she yelps, more so out of fear than anything else. Once she gets acquainted with you, she wants nothing but love and affection. She gets along great with her fellow doggy friends and usually just lays low. She is very polite, she doesn't bark much nor does she get in any kind of scruffles with other dogs. Her favorite thing to do is curl up underneath a blanket and snooze the day away. Update 2/9/2017 notes from caregiver: Sabrina is one very sweet girl, but take her out of her comfort zone and she starts to shut down. She did great walking on leash, but was very scared of the new dogs around her and in a new environment. She's very comfortable in Gretta's, so when this adorable little girl does get a new home, lots of patience will be the key to get her acclimated to everything new. She keeps to herself, doesn't bother a soul, and behaves very well. A perfect apartment sized dog with a quiet laid back owner would be perfect for Sabrina! How I act when I first meet new people: Timid until she gets to know you House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained.
