Posted Breed: Poodle (Standard) (long coat). Whitley is a princess who always wants to have her way. Thank you for your interest in a rescued dog. Our descriptions contain all that we know about this dog today. We'll update as more information is known. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture. While we like to know what you like in looks, a dog is more than a pretty face. Our goal is to match you with the best possible pet for you and your home. We want to create furever families. Are you looking to adopt within the next 30 days? If so please visit our webpage at www.carolinapoodlerescue.org and complete the application. You'll find it in the menu on the left hand side. You'll also find a total listing of all our dogs available. Just browsing but interested in poodles and poodle mixes? Please drop a note to applications@carolinapoodlerescue.org with your name, address and phone # and email. We'll add you to our mailing list. thanks the CPR Adoption team Date into Rescue: 02/21/2011, returned 07/2016 Reason for being in rescue: originally an owner surrender due to not receiving enough attention, but came back to us due to her resource guarding Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? yes - resource guards Weight: est 54 lb Height: est 22 in Adoption Fee: $350.00 Fence needed? Yes What kind of home would be best for me? An adult only home with an experienced standard poodle owner who is able to work with Whitley one-on-one, and who is patient with her moods when they change. No other animals or children. Update 2/15/2017: Whitley has improved some the past few months. The key to Whitley is being firm when she throws her fits but also understanding that she is a rescue dog. Asking her to "sit" comes a long way with her and shows her you are the one in charge. On the plus side she is very obedient for treats! If you are lucky enough Whitley will show you her playful and rambunctious side. She will run circles around you and ask for a game of chase! Although, I will admit her roughness while playing needs to be corrected. She is still needs some work but she has great potential and improves every day. Update/ as of August 2016:/ Whitley is a gorgeous orange (apricot) Standard Poodle with white markings. She is active and curious. She loves people, and would do well with a confident, experienced owner who can spend time with her. She enjoys taking walks, but will pull a little on the the leash. During a recent temperament test, Whitley was OK with dogs (large and small) and cats. However, we feel that she would do best as an only pet. She is an active dog, she harassed the other dog in her previous home. We feel she will harass a cat, as well. She needs a home where someone can work with her one-on-one. (Only pet, please!) Whitley's food resource guarding seems have improved while in a controlled situation. I was able to give her treats while she was alongside six other dogs, and she was polite and patient the entire time. However, she was in an unfamiliar place, and on her best behavior. She still reacts strongly to mops and brooms. (We will work on this.) When she feels threatened, she will give a clear warning signal by growling. For example, when someone approached from behind her to remove her from a muddy area outside, she growled to let the person know that she did not like them coming up behind her. She is highly food motivated, and will "work" for food! She is leash trained, house trained, and knows many commands (sit, down, etc). She loves men and women. Due to her background and reactivity, we feel she should be in an adult only home. (No children!) Whitley is OK with being groomed, and stands nicely on the grooming table. Our groomer said that Whitley has the best coat she's ever seen! Update as of July 2016: Whitley was adopted from CPR years ago and unfortunately has now returned due to some behavioral issues. Her family reported that Whitley has shown aggression when being asked to do something she didn't want to do and aggression over food. Since she has been with us here she has shown reactivity towards mops and brooms, and she does resource guard her food. Due to her resource guarding issues we feel she would fit best in a home without children. Whitley needs a home with a dog savvy person, someone confident in their dog handling skills, because Ms. Whitley is going to push the envelope and see what she can and cannot get away with. Once she is made aware that that behavior is unacceptable and wasn't going to be tolerated, she behaves like the good dog we know she can be. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. My age: estimated birth date 07/25/2008 Please note - we do not ship dogs. If you are interested in adopting, please take a look at the distance between the foster home location and your location and make sure you are willing to make that trip. To apply, please visit our webpage at www.carolinapoodlerescue.org and visit the tab on the left that directions you to the online application. Please note that when screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, color, age, etc. Others here may be a better fit for you. It is very difficult to get to know a living animal from a picture and a short description. Since we are constantly getting in new dogs, this may be a dog not in our listings yet. We want you to be very happy with your new companion and will make suggestions based on what you tell us about you. We'll add you to our mailing list. thanks the CPR Adoption team Date into Rescue: 11/23/2016 Reason for being in rescue: Owner release health of owner. (Ana was surrendered to a vet clinic in Mobile, AL and the vet reached out to CPR.) Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? None known. Weight: Estimated 56.6 lbs Height: Estimated 18" at the shoulder. Adoption Fee: $229 Fence needed? Yes, Ana is timid in some ways and badly undersocialized. A fence is a must to give her a safe place to run and play with her human friend. What kind of home would be best for me? Ana needs a home that is laid back and quiet, and that has a good deal of understanding of canine personality and how to shape behaviors in an older dog. Ana was badly under socialized all her life and so does not trust easily. She has also recently exhibited resource guarding and has bitten several of our caregivers hard enough to draw blood. We've moved her to a quieter area but are watching her carefully. What is my personality like? Ana came from a quiet and reserved home where it was just her and her owner. She is very timid and shy, she is not one to run up to you and tackle you with hugs but will most likely stay in a corner. Ana needs confidence and patience and a great deal of understanding of canine behavior. We may try her on prozac to alievate her fears. Ana does not like walking on a leash but only out of fear of going somewhere she is not familiar with. She has the potential to be a very sweet girl given the opportunity. Ana has bit a few of the caregivers here, mostly out of fear but never badly enough to need stitches.. please be mindful of that if you are interested in adopting her. How I act when I first meet new people: Timid and that timidity can manifest in fear aggression with some people. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. Breed: Poodle (Standard)
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Adult
    Location: Pittsburg, CA
Posted Breed: Poodle (Standard) (medium coat). Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" 3 yr old, 32 lb GOING BLIND Standard Poodle NEUTERED MALE for ADOPTION ***To donate towards Tazo's care, please make a tax-deductible donation at www.paypal.me/UOH. His expenses are estimated to run us $1500 while he is in our care and our all-volunteer team needs donors to continue our work of saving senior, special needs and medically needy animals*** Tazo is a 3 yr old, 32 lb Standard Poodle. He is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and free of parasites. He joins us from City of Manteca Animal Shelter via a partnership with Tailchaser Rescue Tazo is in the early stages of a disease called Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) which causes eventual blindness. There is no treatment and no cure. It is common in poorly-bred poodles. He is in the VERY early stages and he can still see well in regular lighting. He has a little bit of trouble when the lights are dim. Eventually he will progressively go completely blind but HE WILL BE FINE. Dogs do very well with blindness especially if they are familiar with their environment already. He has had a definitive diagnosis by the ophthalmology resident and faculty at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. An adopter is more than welcomed to continue to have him evaluated by an ophthalmologist if they choose, however, it is not necessary to do so. His condition is not painful and does not require any treatment or monitoring. It just is what it is. He is a regular dog who acts like a regular dog and he only needs to be treated like a regular dog. He needs rules and boundaries and leadership and exercise and play and snuggles just like any regular dog. Tazo will require regular professional grooming every 6 weeks and the expense of such needs to be a part of any adopter's budget. It can run $100 or more. Tazo is perfectly potty trained (squats to pee, too). He is crate trained and walks well on a leash. He knows "sit" and "shake" and possibly some other commands but he has not shown us those yet. Tazo is great with other dogs and is fine with cats. Tazo has some minor (high-value) resource-guarding issues that may be related to his loss of sight. For this reason, we will only place him in a home with children over the age of 12. We also require his new family to speak with our behaviorist. It is very manageable and seems to be stress-related (poodles do not do change very well). He is spending a week at our trainer's place to work on this and he is doing very well. It is a non-issue if his family continues to work with him on it. Tazo is located in the SF Bay Area of CA and we adopt to people who live anywhere as long as they are willing to travel to us to adopt. We care about our animals enough that we want to meet their new people in person. It is unfair to send a sight-impaired, high-strung dog on a random unregulated transport to places unknown and we will not do that. If you feel that you are a good fit for Tazo, please send a detailed email to beourpet@gmail.com and let us know what you can offer him. #startastoryadopt #shelterpetlove #standardpoodle #blinddog GENERAL INFO: Housebroken?: Yes Crate Trained?: Yes Leash Trained?: Yes Rides Well in Car?: Yes Non-Shedding?: Yes Good with cats?: Yes, we think so Good with dogs?: Yes Qualifies for Seniors for Seniors?: No Umbrella of Hope does not have any strict rules on ages of children because all children are different, but our best approximation is that this animal would do best with children over the age of 12. We will not place this dog in homes with young children due to resource guarding behaviors. Umbrella of Hope is a non-profit animal rescue based out of Pittsburg, CA that rescues animals off death row from local shelters. We offer rebates of adoption fees after completion of obedience classes and CGC titles. Also, ask us about our seniors for seniors program, where we adopt animals 5 years or older to qualified homes with a $5 donation as an adoption fee. All animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, treated for parasites and given any additional treatments (dental work, bloodwork etc) as recommended by our vet. Some of our senior animals have sponsorships for their food/vet care/medicine for the rest of their life at our vet in Pittsburg, CA (94565) Adoptions to veterans of the US Armed Services are ALWAYS free to thank you for your service. Other retired public servants, please let us know what career you retired from and we can let you know if we offer any discounts for your adoption Please send an email to the Umbrella Of Hope Animal Director with any inquiries at beourpet@gmail.com. Detailed emails will be answered first. We thank Maddie's Fund for their sponsorship, Well Pet Vet Clinic for providing most of our veterinary services, Lovely Grooming for our grooming needs, and Delta Dog Camp for training. We thank Memoirs of a Dog and Share the Joy Photography for the beautiful portraits of many of our animals and a special thanks to volunteer photographers Barbara, Kristy, Christine and Natalie. Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? Chewbacca is people selective and needs someone that can work with his issues! Weight: Estimated 50-60 lbs Height: Estimated 20" at the shoulder. Adoption Fee: $399 Fence needed? Yes, but also should be leashed walked at first. Chewbacca is nervous in new situations. What kind of home would be best for me? An only dog home, must have patience, He is also Male selective. What is my personality like? Chewbacca was found as a stray after Hurricane Mathew. When he first arrived, he was terrified and shut down.. but since then he has came great strides into the dog he is now. He always wants to be on the go and loves to have things that keep him busy, outside of his crate he is back and forth between doors just itching to do something! He does need some leash work, once his nose is to the ground he gets carried away and pulls. He has sat for a treat before, but tends to get distracted sometimes. Chewbacca is nervous in new situations and may growl and try to snap/bite but after he knows he is okay he loves to have attention and his back scratched.. but only if you can keep his curious mind still long enough! (It can be hard to get a read on Chewbacca because he is people selective! Some people he is perfectly okay with and while others, not so much. He needs a dominant and patient owner that can help him work through his issues.) How I act when I first meet new people: Cautious, and may snap/bite out of fear. you have to take it easy once I warm up I am fine. House trained?
