Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Poodle (Toy) / Mixed (medium coat). Gabriel was taken into foster care in 2009. I have been fostering him for the past 5 years. Gabriel was an owner surrender when he was a year old, given to a shelter. He came from the Milwaukee, WI area. Gabriel came into foster care as a very abused pup, having brain damage and swelling of the brain. After being on Phenobarbitol for 4 years, his seizures have stopped and he has been Pheno free for the past year. Gabriel is currently taking Prozac to keep him calm. The abuse he endured his first year of life has left him with many fears. He is deathly afraid of brooms, mops, and any type of balls(basketballs, soccer balls and children's toy balls). Our Vet had said that these instruments may be the cause of his brain damage and fears. Gabriel will not be adopted out to a family with children. Children tend to scare him and we can not guarantee him not reacting badly towards them. He needs a dog savvy family consisting of adults only where he will get the respect he is so deserving of. He is a lover, gives the best kisses and loves being a lap pup. He is leash trained and looks forward to his walks. Gabriel is currently being fed twice daily, and his food must consist of a grain free diet. He is house trained and crate trained, he is current on his vaccinations, Heartgard and Frontline Plus.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Saint Bernard / Mixed (medium coat). Good Morning Wisconsin! My name is Kiana, I was found as a stray near Anderson, Indiana. I am microchipped and when the ACO called my home, my owners said they didn't want me. Their loss! I am a very pretty girl and am a little independent. I need a space to call my own. I do get along with most pups as long as they are not in my face. I also get along with most cats, believe it or not! I am spayed, UTD on all of my vaccinations including Bordatella. Today I will visit my new doctor and have what they call a "once-over". I will need to have HW bloodwork done as there is no information on the paperwork that my foster mom received saying this was done. Best to be safe, right? I will be in foster care for maybe 4 weeks so my new foster mom can figure out my personality and be able to help me find the best possible family. Love and nose kisses, Kiana Adoption fee is $250.00

Posted Breed: Lhasa Apso / Poodle (Miniature) / Mixed (short coat). 11-20-2016 Morning everyone! I have come a long way since my intake. Foster mom really knows my personality now cause I wear it on my paw! I do not like to be crated. Nope, put me in a crate and I will relentlessly bark and scream. I do best gated off in a room when foster mom leaves the house. I am more of a player now, most times I will join in the fun of rough and tumble. I am a very gentle boy and play gently, but still love to roll on the floor and rush after pups only to get to their face and then stand still. I am a beggar when it's dinner time for humans, if I can't taste what they have, I will yip relentlessly. Sometimes I am put in another room while they eat. I eat my own meals at a very slow pace, I like to savor the food. No one gets near me when I eat, they know better than try to steal even a small morsel. I am in love with the human race...there is no one I have met that I don't like. I curl up like a baby in your arms and will fall asleep immediately. 9-14-2016 Well, hello beautiful world! I have gained a little more weight and I think I'm ready for a home of my very own! I had my dental and lost 7 teeth, I feel so much better now. I get along with my foster sister and my foster mommy's friends pups. I am pretty vocal when I need to go ourside to do my business or I'm hungry. Otherwise, I'm a pretty quiet guy. I love hugs and cuddles and I will purrrrr like a kitten if you hold me close. I am leash trained and pretty much potty trained. I love rides in the car and meeting new people. I am so ready for my forever home...are YOU ready for me? 8-24-2016 I am feeling so much better now. I have gained a little over a pound because foster mommy is always feeding me. My diet has changed now, I got so tired of eating people food, I surprised foster mom one day and ate my foster sisters bowl of food! YIPEE, I eat a good grain free dog kibble with a tablespoon of canned grain free and foster mom pours some Kefir over it. In maybe 3 weeks I will be strong enough for my vaccinations, dental and microchip. We have to wait and see if I can gain some more weight. Talk about suave...you oughta see me prance. I have moves like no other on earth! Some say I look like a dancing pony. Honest! Keep watching for my updates, say a little prayer for me please to gain strength so I can keep up with the others. Leonardo Intake 7-18-2016 My name is Leonardo and getting healthy is my goal! I was found in an abandoned home with no food or water for 2 full weeks. I lost half of my body weight and I was a matted mess! Foster mom didn't even know if I was neutered or not! I am safe now, thanks to my rescue people. Foster mom is feeding me 4 meals a day of cooked ground Turkey with brown Himalayan rice. I started feeling strong enough to eat on my own a few days ago. I am on a positive up-swing! Foster mom's goal is to get me back up to 15-16 lbs so I will be ready for adoption. I get along with other pups in my foster home. I'm not a 'player', but I love to watch the others play. I am great on a leash and love very short walks. Hopefully soon, I will be strong enough to take longer walks and explore the neighborhood. I adore people, especially the ones who pick me up and love on me. I love to be loved! Keep a close eye on me, Foster mom will continue to post updates on my health. I am too weak for my vaccinations, dental and microchipping at this time. We are hoping for a weight gain so maybe in a month or so I'll be ready to go to my forever home. Just look at how adorable I am!!!

      Location: Beloit, WI
Posted Breed: Pekingese (medium coat). Update 1-19-2017 Shilo has had his dental and 10 teeth extracted. He is now ready for his forever home. Shilo is potty trained and loves all pups and people! Intake 11-28-2016 Shilo came into rescue as an owner surrender. He was brought to our Vet Hospital where he was updated on some of his vaccines and also had x-rays taken of his bladder. It was found Shilo had many large and small bladder stones. He was taken into his foster home and after hearing him cry all night we took an emergency trip to UW Vet Hospital. Many radiographs were taken and the surgeon decided to do surgery immediately. Shilo did well with his surgery and was released the afternoon after his surgery. He no longer cries and is out of pain, just feeling a bit under the weather from his surgery. He has done well, and will have his sutures removed in 10 days at which time he will be microchipped. Shilo loves the pups in his foster home. He has come out of his shell and wants to play. He has proven to be a little love, he has seen no strangers and loves all people. Shilo will be up for adoption mid January, we want to keep him in foster care until he is completely healed and has had a dental for severe dental disease. Shilo will need a securely fenced in yard so he can explore at his own pace. He is not a threat of flight risk, he just loves the outdoors and likes to explore on his own at his own pace. We will keep you updated on his progress as the weeks pass by.

Posted Breed: Xoloitzcuintle/Mexican Hairless (short coat). Pupdate 6-17-2016 I have been in foster care for 5 days now, and thank goodness foster mom and dad have discovered that I need to be with my daughter, Taffy in order to be happy. It has been decided that we will be adopted out as a bonded pair so we can live our lives together like it is meant to be. We love all other pups, even big ones and we have no problem playing with the 'big' girls. We sleep in the big bed with foster mom and we are very sound sleepers. Intake June 12, 2016 My name is Tiffin. I am an unusual type of pup called a Coated Xolo. I am very loving and love to give kisses. I am tiny enough to fit in your coat pocket and go with you everywhere! I came from Mexico where my owners took me to the vet to be euthanized. They no longer needed me or my daughter Taffy to be part of their family. A wonderful lady scooped Taffy and I up and took us to her rescue. We have been potty trained, love to go for walks on our leash with our person. We are now at our second foster home looking for our forever families. We would like to stay together, but if that isn't possible, we can find our very own loving forever families. On my way into the USA on the transport, somehow my cornea got scratched. Foster mom took me to the vet first thing this morning so I could have my HW bloodwork checked, my bordatella injection and my eye checked. For the next week I am on special eye drops and internal medications to help me heal faster. I am HW negative, spayed and UTD on all my vaccinations and I am microchipped. I am a beautiful, loving girl that needs a family of my own! PS, Just so you know, I was bred to squirrel hunt, so I need to stay away from them!!!

Posted Breed: Xoloitzcuintle/Mexican Hairless (short coat). Pupdate 6-17-2016 I have been in my foster home for five days now. Foster mom thinks it would be best if my mom and I are adopted out as a bonded pair. We are pretty much inseparable and I have been with Tiffin (my mommy) all of my life. If mommy can't see me, she starts crying and searching all over. I am so happy that foster mom and dad have discovered this, we will be together always and forever. My name is Taffy and I'm a very small Coated Xolo. My coloring is remarkable, I am a bowl of ice cream sundae for your eyes! A little bit of this and a little bit of that and you get a beautiful girl like me. I have stunning eyes and a beautiful coat. I get along with other pups, but when it's feeding time, I need to be crated to eat because I just might eat someone else's food and I will let everyone know what my intentions are. I came from Mexico where my previous owners wanted me to be euthanized. They didn't want us anymore. My goodness, I'm only two years old and deserve far better than that!A very nice lady came to my mommy's (Tiffin) and my rescue and saved us from sure death. This nice lady brought us all the way to the United States so we have a better chance of being adopted to a loving family. I love other pups as long as I am introduced to them slowly. I was bred to hunt squirrels, so I need to stay on my leash at all times while I'm out for a walk. I do need a fenced in backyard, and it must be secure. I can jump pretty high and I can run fast! I saw my doctor today, I am HW negative, UTD on all of my vaccinations, spayed and microchipped. I am ready for my forever home! I couldn't possibly be any more healthy than I am now. I love people, I love to give kisses and I make the perfect lap pup. It did take me a small minute to warm up to my foster daddy, but we are inseparable now. No small children for me, I am very fine boned and need older children that can respect my small stature. I'm a lion in a small package!

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Update 10/09/2016 Hey World, check out my new photos from a special photo shoot. Aren't I handsome! --------------------------------------------------------------- Hello world—it’s me, Brutus!! Now that I have been in foster care for a while I get to write my updates all by myself!! First of all, I would like you to know very handsome I am. I am caramel and chocolate colors—and who doesn’t love caramel and chocolate??? According to official Chihuahua breed coloring I am what they call a blue and caramel Chihuahua. But—since looks aren’t everything—here are a few of my winning and adorable traits: I am potty trained—that one is always a big hit with potential new Mommies and Daddies! I love to give kisses and get belly rubs. I love to sit on laps. I love car rides. I am very very smart—(watch out world)!! I play well with others—as long as they are small to medium-sized dogs. I am 5 years old!! That means that I have gone thru all of that annoying puppy stuff but have many many years to love my new family. I am a typical Chihuahua personality—and if you know what means, then we are on the right track to being fast friends. Now that I have you intrigued with my handsome little self, I need to let you know a few more things about me My life has had its ups and downs. My Daddy had to go into hospice care and that is how I ended up in rescue. Some days the adjustment has been hard for me, but I am learning to love this new life and all the other pups here with me. It takes me a while to trust new people. Big dogs and dog parks do not work for me—they are a definite NO in my new home. Also—no small children—those little two-leggers are scary for a little guy like me. I do get scared easily until I know that I can trust you. My new family will have to go slow with me and have patience. I need someone with doggie experience and who will let me come to them at my own pace. When I am afraid it looks like I am trying to be very fierce, but it is just fear. I need a family who understands that about me. During the day when foster mom is gone I stay in a Pack ‘n Play. This keeps me safe and I love it in there. I would also probably be all right in a crate for short periods of time or gated in a room. My new home needs to have a very secure fenced yard as I have been known to push thru gates when I hear or see something that needs investigation. Like a lot of small dogs, sometimes I think that I am bigger than I really am! But I am really 10 pounds of pure soft squishy love. So—if you love little guys like me and have the patience to wait for me to learn to trust you, we could be best friends and I will love you forever. My adoption donation is $300.00.

Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Wirehaired Fox Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). 9-29-16 I'm just one sweet, loving and cuddly boy! My foster mommy takes me to work everyday so I can be socialized. Well, I love everyone, even polite children. I have never growled at anyone, I just want love from everybunny! My potty training is going really well, I let foster mom know when I need to use the yard for my business. I have gained a few much needed ounces and I will never turn away from a good breakfast or dinner. I sleep in the 'big bed' and am totally trustworthy. I love toys and fetch, still trying to understand that I must let go of the ball when foster mom tells me to 'leave it'. I am very low maintenance, I love walks with my other foster brother. 8-30-2016 My name is Sammy, and I come when I am called! I'm doing wonderfully well in my foster home and I get along with all pups. I went to our Dog Dayz Fundraiser and showed off my handsome self. No one heard a grumble out of me cause I am so well behaved! I love all people who show respect. I'm a little nervous around children, they run and make lots of noise. Hope to see an application from you soon! I'm ready to find my forever home! 8-23-2016 Ya wanna know something? I do not come when someone calls my name! My foster momma is going to change my name soon. My favorite name is Sammy, like Sam Elliott! I'm a very handsome, unique dude that's looking for love in all the right places. I love being outside. Every time the door opens, I'm out either exploring or sunning myself. When foster mom whistles, I come a running. I love toys and I'm learning to play fetch. I think I will be pretty good at it. I could eat my way to China too. I have a voracious appetite that just doesn't quit. I get fed breakfast and dinner. Foster mom doesn't believe in free feeding. Good thing, cause I would lose my physique and become rather rolley poley! I love all people, specially the ones who pay lots of attention to me. I seldom bark, sometimes when a foster sister chases me and jumps on me. I let them know that nice girls don't chase boys... I still need a securely fenced in backyard. I love exploring and it's hard to do with a leash. Foster mom just doesn't have the speed I have! 8-19-2016 Jack has fit into his foster home perfectly. He loves to snuggle and get neck and chest rubs. Jack is not quite potty trained, but he will need time to learn that outside is for potty. He gets along with the other pups and is as far from an alpha dog as can be. He is very mellow now and feeling much better after his surgery. Jack says he would love another playmate with four legs. He also let us know he doesn't want to be adopted into a family with children under 12 years of age. 8-17-2016 Jack had all of his vetting done today. He is UTD on all vaccinations, neutered, HW- and microchipped. He did very well and is resting in his foster home. Jack will need a yard with a very secure fence. Intake 8-16-2016 Jack was used to barter drugs. He came into rescue when a friend of A Promise of Love Rescue took him under her wings to get him away from the drug dealers. Not much is known about Jack, he will be in rescue for 3-6 weeks so we can see his personality and likes and dislikes. So far, he is very playful and wants to play with the others around him.

Since they both love to explore outside, they require a securely fenced back yard. Update 10-01-2016 Hello, My name is Oaklee. I am now 6years and 10 months old who has many wonderful years of love to give. I am a sweet boy once I know you. I am starting to give kisses and play with my human. Since I was a breeder in a puppy mill it took me a while to show love since I was never shown it. Though I am leashed trained, my favorite thing to do outside is run in a fenced yard and bounce like a bunny, which makes my foster parents laugh. l love to exercise, but I am a good, calm boy in the house. I love to sleep next to Autumn inside and coax her to play. I sit nice for my meals when told. Call me and I will come to you. I sit like a champ for ear cleaning, grooming, and baths. I am very patient when being fussed over. I wear a belly band and am dry 50% of the time. I have gone on a pee pad with my belly band on. It may be possible for me to be trained to go on pee pads in a small area for breaks. I do my poop outside all of the time. It does not matter if my new owner is male or female, I will love either one. If you are chosen to adopt us, please give us time to adjust and we will love you whole-heartedly with hand kisses and playful bounces. Much Love, Oaklee Update 09-12-2016 Check out my new professional photos! I am a very handsome boy! Update 6-9-2016 Autumn and Oaklee have been in foster care for just over 6 months. They both have become pretty dependent of each other, trusting their foster mom and are no longer frightened. Update Monday December 7, 2015 OakLee and Autumn have been fostered in the same home for the past four weeks. It has come to the attention of Foster mom and dad that these two pups should not be separated. They rely on one another for cuddles, company and love. At this time, we will not be adopting out Autumn and OakLee separately. They will be looking for a home together. My name is OakLee. I am named after my foster mom's family home. You see, there are 5 big oak trees in the yard. She wanted to name me after them because of the beauty of nature and remembrance. I was in a cage for over 6 years of my life. You would be amazed how happy I am to be free. I love people, love to be pet and love, love, love running outside. I am quite social. Because I came from a puppy mill, my mouth and teeth are a mess. I lost many teeth, but I can tell you that my mouth feels so much better. And smells better too! We will be available for adoption after the 19th of November, 2015. Foster mom says I have to heal real good first before I can go to my forever home. We will be looking for an all adult home, we are very fine boned and need extra special care. We also will need some time to get potty trained, this is a whole new world for us and I hope everyone can be patient with us while we learn. I will also need a fenced in yard, we mill pups have flight issues, and boy, can we escape and run fast!

Since I have been fostered, I have learned to walk on a leash. I am not much for running in the yard. I just wish to quickly do my business and come inside to be near you. When you have the time, I love to sit next to you on the couch and be petted. I will give you kisses ‘cause I really appreciate being loved since I was a former mill dog. At mealtime, I will sit nice when told. I eat soft food and clean my dish. Though I wear diaper, I am dry overnight and most of the day. My foster mom feels if I was put in a small room with pee pads for potty breaks that I eventually would not have to go out in the weather. I do enjoy being outside for a bit on the patio. Foster mom takes care to keep me out of the sun to prevent cataracts and off the grass after breaks to prevent fleas. My favorite thing is being near my human and sitting on the couch with her. I favor women, but can get used to a man with patience. The lucky person who adopts us will find that once I warm up to you, that I will bring you great joy and love. It's so beautiful there this time of the year. 5 pretty oak trees in the yard with stunning colors. My mate, OakLee is also named after their family home! I came out of a puppy mill. I have given birth to many babies, and well, it was time to be retired. I now live in a super duper home with other pups. I get along well with small pups, I've been around pups all my life. Anyway, for the first time in my life I have had a lovely bath and a warm snuggy bed to sleep in. I am in love being free. I love people and will keep nudging you till you pet me. Foster mom says I'm pretty much socialized, but I need some potty training. I am wearing a pair of panties now, we don't know if I will ever be able to go with out them. You know what people say? Accidents happen! To no fault of my own, I will try to only go potty outside. There are no guarantees in life, but I am a great girl and this should not stop you for putting in an adoption application. Due to my size and fragility, I will need to be in a home with adults only. I will need a fenced in yard so so I can enjoy my freedom. Foster mom has watched me play outside and snoop for holes under the fence. Not to worry, I couldn't go too far, she always has her eye on me and she's pretty quick to pick me up. I don't have many teeth, I had my dental today and most of my teeth were rotted and had to be pulled. I will require a soft diet of grain free food so I can continue on the road to good health. I will be available for adoption on November 19th. I need time to heal and my foster mom needs to learn as much about me as possible to make sure I find the right 'match'.

She has kept her weight stable for almost a year now and seems quite content. Lilly is now potty trained and will run to the door when she need to relieve herself. Lilly loves all people including young adults. She would love to find her forever home where she will get all the attention she needs. She loves to cuddle and rarely barks and will make a family very proud to call her their baby girl. Lilly needs a securely fenced yard where she can get plenty of exercise. Lilly gets along with all dogs, small and large, a playmate would be ideal for Lilly. Update on Lilly! We are proud to announce that Lilly is on the road to recovery. Although she will be on daily medications for the rest of her life, she will certainly make that ONE certain family a happy-go-lucky pup. Lilly was diagnosed with EPI (Exocrine Pancreatic Insuffiency), a digestive disorder that can cause devastating starvation. It is a very treatable disease, and successful management can be achieved with the correct balance of treatment (proper enzymes, diet and if needed, B12 and or antibiotics) So far, Lilly has gained back the weight she had lost and continues on a steady road. She will need enzymes in her daily meals to keep her from starving to death. She is happy-go-lucky girlie100% of the time but will need to continue with her enzymes daily. Sept. 7, 2014 Lilly came into rescue on September 6, 2014. Lilly is an owner surrender who was given up because the family could no longer financially care for her. On intake, Lilly had abrasions of unknown origin from her right shoulder, down her spine to her left lower side. She was seen by our vet immediately upon arrival to Beloit. She was given a heart worm test (neg) a fecal float(neg), given her needed vaccinations and seen for her abrasions. Lilly is currently on an oral antibiotic, topical antibiotics and antibiotics for ear infections. Once Lilly is healed, she will have her dental and be microchiped. Lilly is a sweet, loving girl that gets along well with other dogs. She is not leash trained or potty trained but we are currently working with her on these issues. She loves her time outside in our fenced in backyard, running with the wind and flashing her face to the sun. She will make a great pup for any family. Lilly Jilly Bean requires a grain-free diet to maintain her beautiful coat and keep her healthy. Update/10-20-14 Lilly has healed completely! She is a lovely little girl that just wants to please you. She gives great kisses and loves to hug close to your neck. Due to the severity of Lilly's burns, the hair will not be growing back in. Her lovely personality and her warm eyes will capture every beat of your heart. We are still working on potty training her, she has come a long way since she was brought into our rescue. Lilly gets along great with all pups, she loves to play chase with the youngsters. All Lilly Jilly wants is a warm loving home where she will never be tormented and loved for the beautiful little girl she is.
