Posted Breed: Pug / Eskimo Spitz (medium coat). Virgie is a total mystery to us! He was supposed to be a peke mix,,,,, but he has straight legs and looks more like the overbite and smushed face part of his appearance might have come from a pug ancestor, instead of a peke............... We don't know what kind of a coat he'll have when his hair grows back,, right now he looks like a miniature American Bulldog! He's sweet as can be and loves to run around and play. He likes face time with his people.... but keeps busy playing with the other dogs. We got some pictures this afternoon while the kids played in the backyard! Will try for more soon.

Pug

A.K.A. : Chinese pug, Dutch bulldog, Dutch mastiff, Mini mastiff, Mops, Carlin
Overview: The Pug is one of the oldest breeds of dogs and has flourished since before 400 BC. China is the earliest known source for Pugs, where they were pets of the Buddhist monasteries in Tibet. The Pug is a family favorite. Full of confidence and always eager to please, this dog makes a great playmate for children and a loyal addition to the family.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 14-18
Height (in): 13-14
Colors: Silver, apricot-fawn, or black, with black muzzle or mask, ears, cheek moles, and trace down back.
Coat: The coat of the Pug breed is short and often double-layered, with a smooth, velvety layer of longer hair on top and a shorter, fluffier layer underneath. This type of coat gives the Pug a reputation as a prolific shedder. Often, faithful Pug owners c
Character: Pugs are social and very easy-going. Known for their intelligence, these dogs are generally calm and reserved.
Temperament: This breed gets along well with children, other dogs, and most household pets. They may become jealous if their owner diverts attention to another animal or child.
Care: The Pug requires occasional grooming with a rubber brush to remove loose hairs. Special lotion can be used on the facial creases to clean and nourish the skin.
Training: Since Pugs are stubborn, independent and smart enough to get bored quickly with repetitive exercises, they are not always easy to train. With their silly, distracting antics added to the mix, training a Pug may seem downright impossible at times. Thankfully, Pugs are exceptionally eager to please their owners, and owners who are consistent and patient can usually train their Pugs to exhibit the desired response to his or her prompts. Heaping praise upon them can also help tremendously, since they thrive on attention from their owners. It is also very important that owners do not inadvertently praise behaviors that, while cute, are not the point of the training exercise. This breed is very fond of food and treats, so using treats as rewards may provide some additional motivation for dogs that are especially strong-willed. Working with Pugs during the first six months of their lives is crucial where training is concerned, as it is much more difficult to change dogs’ behaviors after this point. Some owners express concern about how long it takes to house-train Pugs, but puppies of this breed do not develop the muscle strength to control their bowels and bladder completely until they are around 6 months old. As with other commands and skills, Pugs learn to house-train with plenty of positive reinforcement in the form of treats and praise. This breed requires gentle training, as they are very sensitive to the tone of the trainer's voice.
Activity: Pugs love to romp and play outdoors on a regular basis. Due to their small size and rather lazy nature, Pugs do not require a lot of physical activity to stay healthy and in-shape. A daily walk around the neighborhood or a romp in the backyard should easily meet these dogs’ exercise requirements; in fact, too much exercise can exacerbate Pugs’ tendency to wheeze. While Pugs do love to play, especially with children, it is important to prevent them from jumping off high surfaces like sofas or other furniture, since doing so can cause joint damage. Since they do not require much exercise, Pugs make great companions for those who live in apartments or homes without large backyards, including the elderly.
Country of Origin: China
Health Issue: This breed tends to catch colds easily and is stressed by weather extremes. They may be prone to allergies, breathing problems, and skin problems.
Life Expectancy: 12-15

More About Pug Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Tibetan Spaniel (medium coat). This little guy has apparently been abused.... he's had his back legs seriously injured and likely received no medical care in a timely manner,,,, so now he has a very unusual gait. But it doesn't slow him down one bit!! He's just been neutered (as you can see, he's still wearing his lampshade!) but he's managed to figure out the doggie door and getting up on the furniture and his social skills with other dogs are tremendous. And we decided he looks just like a little red panda and have renamed him accordingly. His big hurdle is going to be finding someone who can work thru his real fear of strangers. He showed us on this travels to rescue that he's very quick to accept his "new person",, but seems to only be able to trust one person at a time just yet. We're hopeful that as he finds that he's met many nice people he might come to understand that he can deal with them in larger numbers. But for now,,, it's going to take a special person with a willingness to keep him safe while he learns to trust again.

Posted Breed: Pekingese (medium coat). Dolly is a wonderful little blind senior lady who found herself out of her lifelong home due to human health issues in the family... She had spent her whole life as an only dog in a quiet household and now at the ripe middle age of 11, she was thrust into a foster situation. She is a sweet loving little girl who loves to cuddle and she's quite capable of getting around anywhere she needs to go. What she isn't finding easy to cope with is other dogs that she doesn't know suddenly "appearing" in her space. I'd love to find this little sweetheart a quiet adult home.... she's potentially got years ahead of her, and deserves to spend them in an environment that feels peaceful and safe....

Posted Breed: Pekingese (medium coat). This little senior gentleman is just getting thru his vetting and will be so happy to get rid of that pesky lampshade!! But he's cruising around the back patio and checking out his foster siblings. He seems to have great social skills with other small dogs (which are all we've seen him around) but he's not real sure of strange humans yet. We don't know if that attitude will chance as he settles in or if he's always going to be kind of a "one person" or "one family" kind of guy. He came in with lots of mats and indications of rather lax care but good nutrition and some grooming is already making a difference in those problems....

Posted Breed: Pekingese (medium coat). We're kind of jumping the gun on this little cutie!! She just came in and hasn't gone thru her initial vetting yet,,,, but hopefully that will happen in the next week or two. She still needs to be spayed and we wanted to give her a chance to settle in with us a bit before doing that. She lived her whole life in the same household and at 8 yrs of age is having to deal with the trauma of being uprooted. She doesn't appear to have had much contact with other people so being scared and alone is harder for her than it is for a more socialized dog. But once she decides you're okay, she's a real snuggler,,,,,, and did I mention extremely cute?

We're posting this little guy way earlier than we normally would,,,,, he's so darned sweet that we want to be sure and not miss any opportunity to find that rare and wonderful adopter out there who is willing to take on a senior, He's got wonky legs and limited vision and who knows what else is going on,,, but what we do know for sure is that this little lover boy deserves his own home and his own person/people to enjoy what will hopefully be many good years yet.... He's got a great appetite and a lot of energy,, and a wonderful attitude that includes giving kisses to anyone he meets that will let him. We're going to have our vet check him out this week and update his heartworm test etc...... We'll update his profile as we know more.

He is a wonderful little fella with oodles of personality and a great curiosity for finding out what's going on around him..... We think his vision is very limited,, and we're not sure about his hearing,,, but we are sure that he's a real social butterfly and has done the "meet and greet" with everyone ,,, two or four legged ,,,, that he's encountered! He's fun and he's sweet and if you need a small dog to complete your family,,, maybe Georgie will be the guy for you.....

He's getting along great with his foster siblings and spends a lot of time playing or napping on the back deck by himself,,,, no he's not needy about time and attention. He suffers from dry-eye so needs eye ointment and while he's not crazy about it,,,, we've found a method that he's fine with.... and he gets daily pills to keep his heart murmur from causing him any problems. He's all for the idea of the pill in the hotdog treats!! No problem there. If you are looking for a cute little dog who's a bit on the shy side (and might not be the best choice for young kids) you might want to consider Joey.

Posted Breed: Pekingese (short coat). I have no idea what breed to put this boy down as!! He's here because someone said he was a peke/shih tzu mix,,, and since he was absolutely hairless at the time, it was hard to dispute that theory or any other one!! He has since grown his hair back and he's certainly not a peke.... what we do know is that he's a terribly sweet little guy who gets along quite well with other dogs. He's got one eye that looks like a white marble,, obviously no vision out of it, but it doesn't bother him and we hate to put him thru a surgery to remove it solely for cosmetic reasons. We're hoping that someone will see past the strange looking eye, and see the sweet lovable dog he is. We'll post better pictures soon.

      Breed: Pekingese
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Oakdale, TN
Posted Breed: Pekingese (medium coat). Arlo is a darling little fella.... he came to us from a shelter where they knew the chances of him getting adopted were slim, as he's blind. That seems to be a big roadblock in our human minds,, but somebody forgot to tell the dogs!! This little guy gets around amazingly well, and has right from the get-go. While in quarantine when he first arrived, we did leash walks and he just pranced around happy as could be. When he was introduced to the other dogs, it took him no time at all to figure out the doggie door and even the ramp up and down into the yard from the deck. He's claimed his favorite spot on the couch which he accesses by way of a ramp, and he figured that out all by himself too. He'll happily snuggle up for cuddle time, but if you're busy, he'll just curl up in a doggie bed and take a nap. Between his attitude and his shorter haircoat, he's very low maintainance and will make someone a very loving companion.

      Lil Bit and ...

      Breed: Pekingese
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Oakdale, TN
Posted Breed: Pekingese (medium coat). Lil Bit and Big Sis came up to us from Florida,,, both are supposed to be blind... and Lil Bit is,,,we're not quite sure with Big Sis............ They depend on each other to some extent,,,, but that has been lessening as they settled in. Big Sis goes her own way a lot of the time and wanders around checking things out,, while Lil Sis spends most of her time sleeping in one dog bed or another,,,, she goes out on the deck and spends a lot of time out there in decent weather. Occasionally she'll go down the ramp into the yard and then get confused and holler for help...... but she seems to know that help will come,, and she doesn't get upset about it... They are both estimated to be about 9-10 yrs old and have been vetted and are heartworm negative and have great appetites (we're going to have to rename 'Lil Sis' soon at the rate she's going!!) If you have room in your home and heart for a little blind dog or two who are very low maintenance and very appreciative of any attention shown them,,,, I'd like to nominate this pair.
