Posted Breed: Rat Terrier (short coat). Hi, my name is Winnie, and I'm 12 lbs. and 9 years of feisty personality, but please don't think of me as a crusty old lady (though I can have my moments). With the long lifespan enjoyed by Rat Terriers, you could hardly consider me old. And instead of crusty, I prefer to compare myself to the best French bread--a bit crunchy on the outside, but soft and yummy on the inside. It's true that I don't like kids and big dogs, but I enjoy dogs my own size and even some cats! In fact, one of my best friends is a cat. We sit and sun ourselves together. I also don't appreciate thunderstorms and getting my picture taken. Either one will send me skedaddling for cover. Storms aren't quite so scary when I'm wearing my T-shirt and can find a place to hide, like under the bed. Foster Mom says I can be snarky towards some folks, but if you're patient and gentle--not pushy, I'm sure to show you my soft side and you're gonna love it! For example, I do a little dance when I'm happy, and if you mention taking a ride to the ice cream store, I'll be hopping and wiggling for joy on the way to the door! I am house trained and walk nicely on a leash, but I'm not too fond of being left in a crate. Foster mom says that I'm really quite undemanding. All I need is a quiet home where I can snuggle on the couch and a kindhearted person who is home most of the time so that I won't have to be crated too much. I'm hoping YOU might be that person. To help you decide, I did allow a few more photo ops, and you can see them at http://imageevent.com/newrattitude/winnie . Our adoption fee is $175 for adult dogs or $225 for puppies under 6 months old. More About Rat Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Atlanta, GA
Posted Breed: Rat Terrier (short coat). She may not be a Jedi princess, but Leia has the heart and energy of a brave warrior--one whose primary mission is to seek and capture those fierce rodents of the trees, a.k.a. squirrels. Watching her in action, you'd never guess that this beautiful, fit 21-lb. Rat Terrier is 10. She can keep up with puppies, and she's confident and playful with the other dogs in her foster home. Normally a happy, inquisitive girl, Leia can get nervous (especially on leash) around dogs who are pushy or larger than she. Since backyard squirrel hunting is her most favorite activity, a securely fenced yard is a must for her since she lets nothing get between her and the squirrel she is after. She does have her calm moments too, and in the evenings she'll love to snuggle with you. Leia is working on perfecting her house-training in the rainy climate of the Pacific Northwest, and it's important that you be able to give her regular potty breaks to strengthen this skill. This sweet, silly girl is hoping that you're going to be what she's been waiting for--a family who loves the goofy but driven temperament of a terrier. You'll fall in love with Leia when you see all her pics at http://imageevent.com/newrattitude/leia . Our adoption fee is $175 for adult dogs or $225 for puppies under 6 months old. rescue
      Breed: Rat Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Atlanta, GA
Posted Breed: Rat Terrier (short coat). Life in a puppy mill is a miserable existence, but life there as a breeding dog is a special kind of horror. For four years, that was the only life BlueBelle knew, and it has left its mark on her, both physically and behaviorally. The two teeth that you see in her photos are the only ones she has, and she eats a raw diet due to her allergies. She didn't get the chance to learn how to be sociable with humans while her puppy brain was forming and she was just trying to survive in impoverished, frightening conditions. As a result, her behaviors were like those of a feral dog when she first came to New Rattitude and a veterinary behaviorist diagnosed her with an especially severe case of fears and phobias. As you might expect, 7-year-old BlueBelle is not at all like the average, friendly, playful, lap-sitting, walking buddy that most people imagine when they hear the words “Rat Terrier.” Quiet and small at only 12 lbs., Belle longs for (and deserves) a calm home with loving, gentle adults only, who will respect her need for space, letting her choose whether and when to be touched. In the past, Belle has lived peacefully with a cat but never with children. She'll need at least one canine companion in her new home so that she has a friend and can learn doggy routines. In fact, she’s curious about new dogs and loves sweet, small dogs like herself, but she’ll demand her personal dog-free resting space and do it with a snarl, if necessary. Her threats, however, are reserved for other dogs, and she has never been aggressive toward a person. BlueBelle is house-trained and uses potty pads when no one is home to let her out. She doesn't walk on a leash, so she must have a fenced yard. Her new home should be within easy driving distance of Bogart, Georgia, so that her foster mom can help her transition and avoid any undue panic. Bluebelle won't return your love in the way most approachable dogs would. You'll need to be able to read her subtle signals and take pleasure in small gains, like feeling her stretch a little to nestle more closely into you. But if you've had experience with extremely shy dogs and are the kind of person whose heart will swell simply at the sight of Belle pausing as she takes a drink of water to look you in the eye and ever so briefly wiggling her gray nubbin of a tail, then you may have found your special girl! Take a peek at more photos of beautiful BlueBelle in her online album at http://www.imageevent.com/newrattitude/bluebelle . Location: Atlanta, GA
Posted Breed: Rat Terrier (short coat). When you look into Adele's soulful eyes, you'll feel her gentle spirit and immediately recognize that this 16-lb. beauty is one dream of a dog. Her list of wonderful qualities is a long one. Though it may take her a moment to warm up, she seems to get along with all dogs, both large and small. Her bark is infrequent and short-lived. She's 7-8 years old, fully house trained, and a perfect traveler in a car. Adele appears to like everyone. She adores getting affection and being talked to and is an absolute love around children. She doesn't jump up on furniture and will quietly sleep in her crate, if you want. She'll also happily sleep with you, though she's hesitant about being lifted. She does appear to have some arthritis and currently takes an anti-inflammatory, which seems make her more comfortable, and a joint supplement. In her prior life, she may have had some type of accident because her gait is a little "off," but she appears to have fully recovered, except for the slightly unusual gait and the bit of arthritis. This dream of a dog is also a dreamer herself. And what does sweet Adele dream of? Simply to be loved and pampered by a family or person to call her own. Wouldn't you like to make Adele's dream come true? Check out more pictures of her in her online photo album at http://imageevent.com/newRattitude/Adele . Breed: Rat Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Atlanta, GA
Posted Breed: Rat Terrier. This beautiful chocolate Rattie girl has great looks, fantastic athleticism, and a bright mind to boot! Nine-year-old 15-lb. Zhorbit is a fast learner, who loves to show off her tricks, especially when they are in return for a treat! She's also house trained and will bark to be let out. Yes, Zhorbit has many wonderful qualities, but there’s a reason she has been in foster care for six of her nine years: she has a pattern of fears and anxieties, similar to what you might see in a puppy mill dog. She can’t be picked up, won’t tolerate being bathed or having her nails trimmed, and must be sedated at the vet’s office for even the most minor of procedures. She’ll never be a social butterfly because at some point in her past, she learned that strangers can't always be trusted. She gets along with dogs her size if given slow and proper introductions, but she finds larger dogs too intimidating. And kitties are just meant to be chased! Zhorbit is looking for a caring and compassionate childless home to help her continue to build her confidence and give her the space she needs to feel comfortable and safe. In return, she promises to be a loving and faithful companion. Potential adopters must live within driving distance of Lansing, Michigan, so they can have a preadoption meet-and-greet with Zhorbit and her foster parents. For more pictures of Zhorbit, visit her online photo album at http://imageevent.com/newrattitude/zhorbitdewittmichigan . Breed: Rat Terrier
      Sex: Female Female

      Location: Atlanta, GA
Posted Breed: Rat Terrier (short coat). Meet Nina, the 11-lb. 6-year-old sweetie of tender heart and spunky spirit. It's hard to believe that not long ago, Nina found herself in a North Carolina animal shelter, battling a nasty bout of kennel cough, along with several skin ailments caused by her allergies to flea bites. Now in a New Rattitude foster home, she's been able to focus on making a wonderful recovery, and her personality has emerged, along with a beautiful new coat of fur! Nina is well-behaved and gets along great with her two canine foster brothers, as well as several dogs who've come over to visit. It may take her a while to warm up to new people, but with slow introductions at her pace, she has done well with all the humans she's met too. Nina is house trained and knows how to use the dog door. She may dribble some pee when her foster mom or dad arrives home from work, but she's working to overcome that tendency. Nina's favorite activity is walking or jogging with her foster mom, but she is almost as happy just napping in the kitchen on her dog bed, chewing on a bully stick, sitting on Foster Dad's lap to give him kisses, or chasing squirrels at full tilt in the backyard. More than anything, Nina is looking for someone to share in her joy and enthusiasm for living life and receiving love, and she's hoping that someone is YOU! Check out her online photo album at http://imageevent.com/newrattitude/nina . Our adoption fee is $175 for adult dogs or $225 for puppies under 6 months old. Breed: Rat Terrier-Whippet Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Atlanta, GA
Posted Breed: Rat Terrier / Whippet / Mixed (short coat). Noella is a young, playful Rat Terrier-Whippet mix about 3 years old and 27 lbs. Fun is Noella's formula for life, and she’ll draw you in with her big smile and inviting play bow for a romp in the yard, toy chasing, or even a gentle wrestle. Highly sensitive and sweetly affectionate, she will be happy to join you for a quiet rest too. She is reliably house-trained, has some lovely house manners, and is learning to modulate her naturally exuberant bark. Noella gets along well with the familiar dogs who live with her. She is crate-trained, but she can also be trusted loose in the house when she's home alone (as long as your counters are clear of food). She even knows how to use a potty pad. She is a calm car traveler and loves long walks in a harness and exploring nature trails. As adorable as she is, Noella does have some behavior challenges. A fenced yard is required since she is afraid of unfamiliar people and dogs, and she can bark and/or lunge in fear while on leash. She has bitten strangers who came into her home. She has safely and lovingly shared a home with children, but currently cannot be trusted around children she does not know. She is being worked with on these issues, and New Rattitude offers behavior modification coaching and support to adopters. Despite her fear issues, Noella is a cuddly doll at home with her people, and she knows how to love big and have fun. See more photos at http://imageevent.com/newrattitude/noella . Perrito (GA)...

      rescue
      Breed: Rat Terrier
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Atlanta, GA
Posted Breed: Rat Terrier (short coat). Patience is a virtue, they say, so Perrito must be one virtuous pup! You see, he's been waiting and waiting for a VPH (very precious human) to adopt him so that together they can enjoy the beautiful relationship that only a special dog and an equally special person can experience. Perrito can be a mellow fellow, enjoying ambling walks, sitting by your side, and following you around the house, and he can be a delightfully devilish dynamo, entertaining you by tugging, chasing, and pouncing on his favorite toys with terrier gusto! So what, then, is special about Perrito and why does he need a special person to love and care for him? Well, in addition to packing a huge, quirky, lovable personality into his short, adorable 8-lb. body, this tiny 10-year-old powerhouse also comes with some behavioral and medical issues. He's house-trained, but he also has a condition that doesn't give him much time between feeling the need to urinate and the act itself, so when he has to go, he has to go NOW--no waiting around for a leash to be put on. (He'd appreciate a fenced yard and, if you have to leave him alone for more than a couple of hours, an enclosed indoor space with pee pads.) In addition, Perrito walks politely on leash and likes to meet new people as long as they don't touch him. You might say he has a thing about being touched. He doesn't like to be touched by surprise or handled in certain ways, and because he has bitten in these situations, he can't be adopted to a home with preteen children. On the other hand, once he knows you well, he'll request an ear scratch or back massage. You should see him melt into a good back massage (of course he'll tell you how to perform it to his specifications). Perrito gets along with the six other dogs in his foster home, but he can be grouchy and will guard his food and toys. Nevertheless, if you need to leave him home alone, he should have another dog companion because he seems to have a fear of abandonment. He's also afraid of being left outside and will feel more secure when you're outdoors with him. To complicate matters a bit, Perrito has had multiple bouts of pancreatitis (chronic pancreatitis) and needs a special raw diet provided in four small daily meals, along with supplements. He also takes fluoxetine (generic Prozac) for Canine Compulsive Disorder. His food and medication needs add up to about $70 per month, not an exorbitant cost, but a significant one, especially when your time and responsibilities are factored in. Perrito's foster person is ready to work with you to help him transition to his real, forever home. Don't feel sorry for him because of his special needs, but DO take a look at the pictures and videos of him at http://imageevent.com/newrattitude/perrito . When you see this tough little dude "recycling" bottles or playing catch with his ball, you'll be touched by his indomitable spirit. And maybe, just maybe, (despite the chance that he won't want to cuddle with you), you'll be special enough to know that Perrito deserves not to be kept waiting any longer. Our adoption fee is $175 for adult dogs or $225 for puppies under 6 months old. Posted Breed: Rat Terrier (short coat). Beauty's only skin deep, they say, but in the case of 1-1/2-year-old Julianna, her beauty is everywhere except her skin--or fur, in this case. Having inherited a recessive gene from both her mom and dad, this 22-lb. sweetheart has a permanent but treatable skin condition that causes her fur to mature in three days instead of the normal 30, so she sheds a dandruff of matted dog hair and parts of her coat can look pretty yucky. But listen to Julianna tell her story and you'll understand what beauty really is...Hi, my friend, I'm Julianna. I'm all about fun, fun, fun, and I love to run, run, run!!! I love to play and cuddle. I play nonstop with my foster siblings, and my favorite game is tug-of-war with toys. I also love to chew, but I only chew on dog toys, nothing else, except for the occasional collar belonging to one of my foster siblings. Nevertheless, my foster mom has nicknamed me "Destructo" for my amazing ability to destroy any dog toy except a Kong. I think people are great! I love my teenage humans and my human grandboy, who visits often. He's 3 and we have great fun together. I also love all dogs--big and small. I don't chase cats, but I did get swiped at once when I was just trying to say hello. All this skin stuff really doesn't bother me much; it doesn't itch. I take vitamins for it, get a bath twice a week, and lots of brushing, and I must say I am looking stunning! I'm house trained and sleep in my kennel quietly every night. I'm not a picky eater, and I'm food motivated, so training me is easy! I've mastered a few commands like sit pretty, stay, and come. I walk on a leash fairly well, but I get excited and can pull sometimes. All in all, I'm one sweet pup who's looking for someone to love. If you're looking for love and can look beyond the outside to the real me inside, then I'm the girl for you! I'm waiting for you. Love, Julianna...p.s. Wanna see more pics of me? You could call her the "Comeback Kid." This amazing 14-lb. 8-year-old came to rescue with partially paralyzed legs, but today she lives a nearly normal life thanks to having had intensive physical therapy and acupuncture. She can walk, run, and even climb shallow stairs, and she LOVES to play with other dogs. A healthful diet that includes wet food, broth, and a cranberry supplement has enabled her to practically eliminate the urinary tract infections that used to bother her, as well as the need to wear a nighttime diaper. How proud she will be to show you how she does just about everything other dogs do! So call her the Comeback Kid, the Can-do Canine. Call her anything; just call her, as in "Come, Gaia, you're home!" and expect to be showered with inspiration (and snuggles and kisses).
