Posted Breed: Rat Terrier (short coat). Pet Allies in Show Low AZ Blue is a purebred male Rat Terrier, about 25 pounds. In his foster home, Blue enjoys spending the day on the couch with the other dogs (one picture shows him with Leah). He is PERFECTLY house trained using a doggie door. Blue will take treats from his foster mom’s hands but prefers not to be petted because he grew up as a “backyard breeder” dog with little human interaction. He makes small improvements every day. For example, he has gradually started sitting closer to his foster mom. Blue is good with most other dogs, although he does not like to play with them. He is a quiet dog who rarely barks. We were told Blue is 10 years old, but he is in excellent health and looks like a younger dog. He has many years to live and love with a patient person. A home visit may be part of the adoption process. To start the adoption process, an online adoption application is available at http://www.petalliesaz.org/dogadopt.php Pet Allies, also known as the home of the Barkin Basement Thrift Store at the corner of White Mountain Road and Fawnbrook in Show Low, finds non-lethal solutions to pet overpopulation by offering low-cost spay/neuter services and placing homeless pets in caring homes. Pet Allies, a non-profit organization, is funded by donations from the community, sales at the Barkin Basement Thrift Store, grants and adoptions. In October 2012 Pet Allies also entered into a contract with the City of Show Low to operate the City’s animal control shelter where animals may be seen and adopted. More About Rat Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Billy Ray

      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Show Low, AZ
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Pet Allies in Show Low AZ Billy Ray is a 2 year old male Chihuahua. He is a cute blond who is a typical little guy. Feisty, but gets along with other dogs; very playful, wants other dogs to play with most of the day. He dances away from you reach for him but comes and gets on your lap or wants to sleep next to you when HE approaches you, typical of Chihuahuas! Billy Ray had 25% of his fur at the time he came to us due to non-contagious but untreated demodex mange. After 4 months of daily doses of his medication, he has about 65% of his fur and much of the rest growing in. He will need daily doses of meds for another 4-6 months. After that we believe he will be able to be on a monthly pill, or even a pill every 2-3 months. The daily medication is easy to give and inexpensive and will be included with his adoption at no charge. It's a liquid that can be squirted into a bite of wet food which he greedily gobbles down! Simple. He does best with a bath once a week or so to help with his itchiness, due to the dry skin. A bit of fish oil in his food will help his skin become softer and less dry. Billy Ray uses a doggie door but as is typical of many small dogs, will sometimes refuse to go outside. We're working on getting him comfortable, so that he knows he is safe outside. This may take some work on the adopter's part as well. Billy Ray loves his person and has a tendency to bond to one person, whom he follows about the house (when he's not playing) and keeps an eye on. When you leave he goes outside and waits for you to return. He's there to greet you at the door, jumping up in the air waist high, to touch you and say how happy he is you came back. Adoption fee waived due to his life-long skin condition which is NOT contagious. Billy Ray is a very active and playful dog, who will do well in a home as the only dog or with other dogs who enjoy play time. A home visit may be part of the adoption process. Highly treat motivated in training, excellent on leash, well behaved in the car and well mannered in the house (i.e. no climbing, chewing or begging). Calm and patient while Howie worked at his desk. They took two 7 mile hikes and Rocko loved it! He learned "sit, come & no" commands in that one weekend. Rocko loves being petted and getting a belly rub and positive reinforcement.
