Posted Breed: Rat Terrier (short coat). With a name like Precious, how could this pert and pretty little lady be anything else? As full of energy as a dog half her age, 17-year-old Rat Terrier, Precious, is friendly, affectionate and very loving. Just ask the person cuddled up next to her. A well-mannered miss, she is quiet and never barks, and is fully housetrained if you pay attention to her signals. She once had surgery on her right front leg and now takes daily pain meds for arthritis without complaint. Sadly for sweet Precious, she was released to Animal Control by her owner on his way to life in a nursing home. Luckily for lovely Precious, we intervened, saving her from certain death, to allow her to spend the rest of her own life in the loving security of a real forever home. More About Rat Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (short coat). Just take a look at this sweet boy, Buck! Buck and his siblings were dumped in Genoa a few months ago, but were rescued by their guardian angel! Buck and his sister Sissy are the two pups left from this pack that still need a home. Buck is approximately 3 - 4 months old weighing about 16lbs. He is a fun lil guy, that LOVES to play. His favorite game is playing tug of war with his toy rope or an old shirt. He is learning to play fetch too, he chases the ball, we just need him to bring it back!! :) He is currently working on basic commands with his foster family. Buck loves to snuggle and hide his face in his blanket... how cute! Buck will make the best pet in his furever home. His veterinarian says his prominent breed is German Shepherd, which is obvious by his dark muzzle. Like most German Shepherds, Buck is intelligent and friendly. Buck, like his sister, does gets slightly scared sometimes, but this could be due to being dumped at such a young age. Buck is currently living with is rescuer/foster family. If you are interested in adopting Buck, please fill out an application or if you have more questions, please call or email us. Thank you for stopping by Buck's profile! #adoptdontshop All of our adoptable animals are up to date on routine vaccinations, microchipped and spayed or neutered. Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 100.00. Loves toys, other dogs, cuddling and playing. Silly, cute, playful, friendly, awkward, loving. There are so many wonderful things to tell you about our beautiful Sassy girl. In the time that we have had her, she has made some amazing, positive changes. Back in November of 2016 Sassy was found in a puppy mill dump on Drew Palmer Road. Unlike some of her fellow puppy mill mates, Sassy did not suffer any physical damage. When Sassy was captured, she was very scared and nervous around people. After a few months at the Texarkana Animal League she started to progress. Sassy would play with her new friends (human and canine) and she learned how to use her puppy pads or wait until she was let outside to go potty. One day one of the kennel volunteers noticed that Sassy started to decline in her enthusiasm. Instead of playing outside with her friends, she quickly went back into her kennel. Not only did she rush to get into her kennel, but she would go all the way to the back and just sit there. The kennel volunteer decided that Sassy needed to be in a home in order to thrive so she offered to foster sweet Sassy until she got adopted. Sassy's first night in her new foster home was super fun! The picture you see of her with the big smile is from that night. She was so excited to play and jump around. She introduced herself to all the other dogs there and did great! Sassy soon was learning what is was like to be a regular dog. She got used to the routine of going outside to go potty and to go to her crate when her foster mom gave the cue to do so. Today Sassy is doing what dogs do, she barks at the squirrels, and runs around the yard with all her might. There are still moments in Sassy's life where she feels scared and reverts back to her shy scared self, in these times her foster mom lets her have her space, but makes sure she knows how much she is loved. She gets extra attention, extra hugs and extra loves when she starts isolating. Sassy's foster mom reports that it has been beautiful to watch Sassy grow with each new milestone. If you have ever wanted to make a difference in a dogs life, Sassy is your girl. Being rescued gave Sassy a chance to have the life every dog deserves. If you have questions, we will put you in touch with her foster mom. #adoptdontshop All of our adoptable animals are up to date on routine vaccinations, microchipped and spayed or neutered. Posted Breed: Dachshund (short coat). Adoption Fee: 100.00. Hello! My name is Dottie. I am a sweet girl but very shy. I am so happy to have been rescued :) Dottie is a very beautiful girl but she is very timid and skittish. She is crate trained. She has been in foster care since she was rescued. Dottie was part of a puppy mill dump here in Texarkana in November of 2016. Many of the dogs that were rescued have found wonderful homes, however, some like Dottie, need a bit more TLC. Dottie, is very nervous around people and does not trust easy. At times she snaps of her out of fear. In the time her foster family has had her, they still are only allowed to pet Dottie on her terms. Dottie will not do well in a home with children and must have a fenced yard. There is so much potential for this lil girl, but the family that adopts sweet Dottie needs to understand she is a work in progress. If you feel you can give Dottie the love and patience she needs, please contact us. We will put you in touch with her foster mom. Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Mixed. Say hello to Moose! Moose is a beautiful Lab-Staffordshire Terrier Mix that was lost and found his way into the home of a couple that volunteers at the Texarkana Animal League. After no one came forward to claim Moose, they decided to get him vetted in hopes to find an adopter. Moose has been worked with extensively and is now ready for his furever home. A little bit about this great dog... he gets along with other dogs and cats and is not food aggressive. He can be pet on the head and face area while he's eating with no problem. Updated on all shots, has been neutered, up to date on heart worm medication and has a microchip. Loves to sit in your lap, and play with drones. His favorite toy is a PVC pipe. Moose has learned to "sit" and is now working on how to fetch. He loves baths and playing in the pool. This rescued boy has been showered with love and security. If you would like to apply or have interest in this great dog, please email us or fill out our TAL application. There will be a fee for the cost of transferring ownership for microchip . We will then put you in touch with the family who has been sponsoring him.
