Posted Breed: Shiba Inu (medium coat). 08/18/16: Update on Sugar. Sugar has come a long way since first coming to her foster home. She loves to run in the yard now which she used to not know what to do with a freedom run. She also loves attention and comes up when her foster mom is sitting or laying down to get some love--she seems to have never had attention before so she now groans when you rub her face and tummy. She will always probably be skittish so needs a quiet environment that she will not always be startled with loud noises and quick movements. She is probably younger than previously thought as she still runs with the young dogs. She is housebroke and does fine with the other dogs. She does get a little aggravated if the youngest gets too rowdy with her but puts him in his place. She's a sweet girl who deserves some one-on-one attention. 01/11/14: This is Sugar. She is at least a 10 year old (probably older) purebred shiba inu who was most definitely used for breeding. She is special needs in the fact that she is extremely skittish about everything. She is completely unfamiliar with a leash and had never been up or down stairs prior to coming to her foster home a couple of weeks ago. She also didn't want anything to do with the snow storm we had this past weekend in fact she wouldn't go outside (she would stand and scratch at the door to come back in) for two days when there was snow on the ground (although she didn't have an accident during this whole time). I think she may have never seen snow before either?? Her breed is bred to hunt the mountains of Japan so it should be her natural habitat so I believe she has led a very contained life and was just used for breeding. She hunches down when u pick her up and prefers to just stay on the bed. Otherwise she is as sweet as sugar, hence, her name. She loves to have her face rubbed (she closes her eyes as if "this feels so good"). As you will see in the pictures the few times she gets off the bed is to gather the stuffed toys which she picks up very gently and brings them to lay next to her as if they are her babies. She pretty much ignores the other 5 dogs in the home except to snap at them if they bother her "babies" too much. I believe she has had many litters. In fact when she was spayed she had pyometra and infection of her uterus, which was completely infected with pus. She was lucky it didnt' burst. She also had the worse teeth I had ever seen, they were completely black. They are nice and clean now, but she did have to have 6 of them removed. She will require a very quiet home that has easy access to go outside to do her business and understand that she has probably had a hard life and just needs security and time to adjust. She has amazingly only had one accident in the home, but that is not unusual for the shiba breed. They do not like to go where they live. Sugar's adoption fee is $145.00. If you are interested in adopting her please go to our home page at www.partnersforpetsil.org and fill out an online application. She is spayed, current on all vaccinations, heartworm negative, dewormed and microchipped. Adoptions are held at the O'Fallon, IL PetSmart every Saturday of the month from 11am-3:30pm and at the Glen Carbon, IL PetSmart every Sunday and the first Saturday of the month from 11am-3:30pm. We are also at Petco in Edwardsville Crossing every Sunday of the month from 11:30-3:30 pm. The cats are only at Glen Carbon. More About Shiba Inu Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi, my name is Picadilly and I'm a 2 year old Chocolate Lab mix. I was rescued from the St.Clair County Animal Control with Heartworms. Now that I'm done with my Heartworm treatment I would really like to find my forever home. My ideal home will be one where I'm the only female dog as I don't really like other females. I would maybe like a brother but I'm okay with being the only dog. That just means more attention for me! I am crate trained and house-trained and walk pretty good on a leash. I could use some basic obedience classes to teach me to be a better housemate. I am really food motivated so as long as you have the treats I have the attention to learn. If you are interested in adopting me please visit our website at www.partnersforpetsil.org and fill out an online application. My adoption fee is $145. I am spayed and current on all vaccinations, dewormed, and microchipped. Adoptions are held at the O'Fallon, IL PetSmart every Saturday of the month from 11am-3:30pm and at the Glen Carbon, IL PetSmart every Sunday and the first Saturday of the month from 11am-3:30pm. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Came in w/ 3 pups Hi I'm Miley. I do not have a tragic tale of unfortunate beginnings like some of my kennel mates do. I was just stray. Well not just a stray, I was a mom dog with my three precious babies, sitting in the pound. A lady from Partners came and saved my babies and took me too. Oh how grateful I was that my babies were going to live. I was even more grateful to hear that all three were adopted into loving homes. I was so hopefully that soon it would be my turn to find a forever home where I be loved and cherished too....but here I sit. You see, I have what you'd call "stranger danger" issues. New people can be kind of scary for me. I do much better with women and warm up faster to them, but men take me a little longer. I have gotten much better over the years, but the issue is sometimes still there. I do just great with the male care givers at the shelter that I've grown to love and trust. I love to roll over for tummy rubs and play with other male dogs. There is a volunteer that comes a few times a week to walk me and it took me 5 minutes to fall in love with her. I wish there was someone out there who would take a chance on me and be willing to help me work through my fear. I'm really a fun loving girl who loves play, snuggle and give lots of kisses. I am spayed, current on vaccinations, has her annual rabies vaccination, dewormed and micro-chipped. Her adoption fee is $145.00 IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING, GO TO OUR HOME PAGE AT www.partnersforpetsil.org and fill out an application. Posted Breed: Lhasa Apso / Mixed (long coat). 11/05/15 Update!! Honey, This guy is my shadow. He is really a lover boy, if he feels your unconditional love for him. He is very smart. He has a history that only he knows, so he needs love despite this. He would benefit my being with just one other dog, or an only dog. He doesn't need crated if you have a dog door. Car, house and crate trained, but prefers the bathroom with a gate. He has been around children and my grandchildren love him and he them, but all kids are different. He will be at your feet, or on your lap, depending on what you are doing.' Will act for treats. I am my foster moms shadow. I follow her everywhere. I do not like to be crated and would prefer a home where someone is around most of the time. I need someone with confidence to make me feel secure. 01/28/14 Shoney is doing well in his foster home with Dawn and the pack. He has been tested with cats and is doing well. He did good with the grandchildren. More to come on Shoney's adventure with his new foster family. 04/07/13 Shoney is really a sweet and loving boy, he wants nothing more then to be with his people. He really just wants to hang out with you, but he does have some times when he gets a little freaked out and gets a little snappy. He would not do well in a house with not a lot of action going on. We would be glad to do a trial with Shoney as he does not show well at adoption events. He deserves to have a forever home. Shoney would not do well with children, he can be a nippy boy. 12/06/12 Shoney aka Honey is a male not a female, so we had to change his name. :) 11/09/12 Honey is a Lhasa Apso mix. He was rescued from Clinton County Animal Control. He is a cute boy. He gets along well with the shelter dogs, is crate trained and walks well on a leash. He is looking for her forever home. He is neutered, current on vaccinations, heartworm negative, has his annual rabies vaccination, dewormed and micro-chipped. The adoption fee is $145.00. He is very smart, The people in his forever home, need to be dominant. He has been to obedience school and knows his stuff. with a few walks a day, he will be great to listen. He follows direction and correction. He would be a better only dog, or with and older female. (Females are all hes been around on the older side) He respects them. He would make a good jogging buddy. Needs a yard to run in. He is crate and house trained. Markus would be great with older children, he does not do well with small children. 05/08/15 Update from Markus's Foster Mom. I have calmed down but I still like to play. I listen so much better since I have calmed down. If I were an only pup you would get my undivided attention. I am still a kid at heart and smart to boot. If I am left on my own to think I get distracted. I need a strong but loving person to be my best friend. I love to jog and won't poop out on you but when we get home I will take a long nap. 12/23/14 Hello, I am Markus, I have been told that I am very smart. My foster mom and dad say so, an so does, my obedience teacher, at La Best. I graduated!!!!!!! That was rough. They made me listen for 2 hours straight. I can still make my mind wonder and have energetic streaks, if not on command, but hey, I'm a young boy. My wish is to get a preteen (10 or older) for Christmas. I have been tried out with young kids and I am to springy for them. I need people around me that will stand firm. If I could be an only furbaby, I would be calmer. (If my playmate is young and energetic, I will be too.) I could be with an older dog, but that depends on personalities. 11/22/14 Update: Markus has completed his puppy training classes, here he is with his certificate!! 08/09/14 Another picture of Marcus and his foster friend Bindy!! 07/13/14: Markus would do best with pre-teen or older children. 05/03/14: Markus is doing great in his foster home. From his foster family: "He is around 5 other dogs, and that is an accomplishment in itself to behave. He knows who is who and is minding his manners. He is on a grain free food, which helps a lot. We also have a calm down treat for when he is going out, because he does get excited and wants to run. He uses a dog door that leads to a run and a good sized fenced in back yard. He is doing well, and letting loose of some of the energy. As I am here sending this out, he is sleeping in a recliner. He loves truck rides, and follows me all over the house. I havent had him chew on anything but bones and he loves to play with ropes. He will chase a ball, but wont bring it back. Crate trained, although he will cry at first when put in there. he has a bed in the crate and hasn't tore it up yet. He is food aggressive, but many dogs are, They just have to be fed separately, (in the crate), and all is fine. Possessive with soup bones. House trained also, and hasn't learned to raise the leg yet, lol! If another dog is in the picture they probably need to be younger or close to his age, (3). My older dogs don't care much for his youthfulness. 05/23/14: Markus is being returned due to no fault of his own. 01/19/14 Markus was adopted Sunday at the Glen Carbon Petsmart. 01/02/14 Markus is guessed to be a 2-3 year old, lab/terrier mix. He was rescued from Madison County Animal Control. They were owner turn ins. Markus is a sweet boy, although he likes to protect his food. He listens well but needs more manners. He does like to play rough! He will need some obedience training to help him calm down and learn how to play. Markus is neutered, current on vaccinations, heatwormn neg, has his annual rabies vaccination, dewormed and micro-chipped. His adoption fee is $145.00. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Cattle Dog / Mixed (short coat). 10/04/14 Serta is guessed to be a 2-3 year old, cattle dog mix. Serta is a sweet and loving young lady. Serta was found June 10 with a horribly embedded rope around her neck and severely emaciated. She was taken to Horseshoe Animal Hospital where the rope was removed. For awhile there, she had lost her vision too. But through all her treatments and bandage changes, with people she didn't even know, she was wonderful! Always happy, tail wagging, and giving kisses. As if that wasn't enough, the poor girl had to endure heartworm treatment also. Once again, she came through like a champ. Now Serta is ready to know what it's like to have a real home with lots of love. She knows some basic commands like "sit", "down", "shake", and "stay" and she walks well on a leash. Serta would be best as an only dog and in a home with no children. Her adoption fee is $145.00. She is spayed, current on vaccinations, heartworm neg, has her annual rabies vaccination, dewormed and micro-chipped.
