ROXANNE Breed: Shiba Inu Mix Estimated DOB: 1/1/13 Heartworm Status: Negative Gender: Female, spayed Shots: up to date Microchipped: Yes Notes: is very afraid of other animals, cats and dogs, and needs to be the only animal in home. Because of this, she also needs a home with no small children. Roxanne is a very lovable girl who loves people. She loves to give hugs and kisses, cuddle with you on the couch, and get all the attention you can give. She absolutely adores children and would spend all of her time laying on her back so they can use her belly as a pillow if you'd let her! She also has the prettiest smile you've ever seen on a four-legged fluffy pup. Sadly she is not very good with other dogs (or any other animals) as she is very afraid of them, so she will need to be the only pet in the household and will not be the type of dog who can go to the dog park. Roxanne would do best in a household that can spend lots of time with her and have patience with her while she gains confidence learns to feel comfortable in her new surroundings. She behaves as if she was not allowed inside her previous home so she needs someone to make her realize being a part of a family inside a home is a good and safe thing. This will take a little time and effort but if you’ve got lots of love and want some soft thick fur to bury your fingers in, Roxanne would love for you to make her your new baby! If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Dachshund Mix Female, spayed DOB 9/1/15 Up to date on vaccinations Heartworm negative Microchipped Hi human! Could you be my new mommy or daddy? I’ve heard that my very own family will be coming to adopt me very soon! But until then, I’m learning just how great having a family can be at my wonderful foster home! When I first went to live with my foster parents, I was scared of everyone and everything, including my foster parents and dog and kitty siblings. It took me a while to open up to the new surrouondings, but now my foster mom says I’m her little, 4 legged shadow! I love to cuddle and play fetch (sorta) and tug-of-war. I get along great with my foster siblings too, but I know they need their space once in a while although I may not! I can get anxious when left alone and I really don’t like being left in a kennel while you’re gone. My foster mom says I do much better left in the house with my foster siblings. I’m also working hard on being house trained. Because I’m much happier with others around, I would probably do best in a family with other dogs or lots of mommy-daddy-Penelope time! Whle it may take me some time to fit in with my new family, it’ll be all love and cuddles when I realize that you’re all mine! Breed: Brussels Griffon Mix Estimated DOB: 12/3/13 Heartworm Status: positive Gender: Male, neutered Shots: Shots up to date Microchipped: yes Hey there friend! My name is Ludo and while I may look like any ordinary pup, all my friends know I’m a champion and survivor! Because of my positive heartworm status, I developed an enlarged heart (yes, more to love with too!) A few months ago, I was rushed to the emergency vet because I fainted. They found out I have Pulmonary Hypertension and need to receive medication 3 times a day. I started my heartworm treatment and I completed it without any complications. My heartworm status will be rechecked again in March 2016. Although, these things may sound scary, I’m a fighter and won’t let any of it get me down! My foster says I’m a scruffy ball of energy who absolutely LOVES to play with toys and friends, especially my 4 foster doggy siblings! I’m also doing great with my potty training so far and am very well behaved. However, nothing wins me over like a belly rub and some good loving and cuddling! So, come and meet me. I may be special, but maybe that’s just what will steal your heart away! Breed: Jack Russell Mix Estimated DOB: 8/1/14 Heartworm status: Negative Gender: Female, spayed Shots: Up to Date Microchipped: Yes Dear future family, I’m Hope! After coming to CAAWS after the flood and raising puppies of my own, I’m ready to find my forever family and be spoiled by my very own mommy or daddy! I’m a sweet, scruffy girl who absolutely loves people. I love to play with other dogs, especially my daughter Faith. I’m not a big fan of actually playing with my toys, but making confetti out of them definitely isn’t out of the picture if you give me the chance! If there’s one thing I love the most, it’s bellyrubs! One glance and I’ll flip right over for hours! Make sure you tell your boss you may be late for work sometimes, because I’ll be squiggling at your feet waiting for my kisses and snuggles! I also love going on walks and exploring the sights of the world. However, some of these things are still new to me, so I need some time and training to learn my manners. I’m a smart girl though and am extremely affection motivated and eager to please. So with some training and love, I’m sure to become my mom or dad’s perfect angel in no time! Breed: Rat TerrierMix Estimated DOB: 8/21/08 Heartworm Status: negative Gender: male, neutered Shots: up to date Microchipped: Yes Reggie's owner was placed in hospice care and this poor guy ended up at a kill shelter. He used to sleep every night in bed with his owner. He is a 25lb dog in a 40lb body so he will need to be on a very strict diet to loose all that extra "luv" around the middle. But he is a sweet and loving guy who just needs someone to help him become the biggest looser. 7/19/16-Reggie went to the vet today. They ran a thyroid test and came back negative. So beyond his weight, he's in decent health. He will need to loose 20-25lbs, which is at least half his body weight. He is on a special diet and we are going to try and take him swimming to help loose weight because at this time walking would put too much stress on his legs. He will go back for a check up in 2 weeks. She does get along with other similarly sized dogs though. Hi human! My name is Oakleigh! Though I may look like another member of the dalmatian group, I am a “horse of a different color.” I am a confident and independent young pup who is looking for my forever family! I have lots of energy and would love a family who is just as active and adventurous as I am. I am the queen of tug of war and vow to win every battle! I also love, love, love going on walks. My foster parents say I’m very smart and can adjust to my family’s routine easily. I know when it’s time to go to my crate and even respond to the command “kennel.” However, I am doing well with my potty training and would also do great without a crate. As I am food motivated, tricks are a breeze when I get a treat! However, I can be rather independent, so I would do best with a human who can show me who’s in charge! I am best suited to a home with high to moderate energy and need a Mommy or Daddy with the time and patience to teach me my manners.
