January of 2009, weighing 12 pounds. Daisie is primarily cream colored, and will need regular grooming to keep her looking spiffy. This little girl is blind in both eyes but has no problems quickly learning her way around. She's completely potty trained and loves to go for long walks, sleep in her foster mom's bed and snuggle on the couch. Daisie enjoys playing with squeaky toys, is fantastic in the company of other, gentle dogs, enjoys sunbathing and is real easy going girl. Upon a recent wellness check Daisie is now diagnosed with early kidney disease, she is currently doing well on the special diet. She would do best in a family with a quieter, more sedate environment, no young children and would be happy to accompany her human on daily walks. She is spayed, microchipped and current on vaccines. Adoption fee $100. All of our dogs are in private volunteer foster homes, and as such these individuals are most qualified to answer any questions regarding the dog. We do not have a central shelter or kennel locations - you must make a private one-on-one meet and greet appointment with each individual dog at the foster family's convenience. To protect our foster families' privacy, we must have an APPROVED adoption application on file before we release their contact information. All of our dogs are fixed (spayed/neutered) and up to date on shots. We have a 2 week foster-to-adopt period to make sure the dog is a fit for your family. Adoption fees vary from dog-to-dog. Please note that an approved application DOES NOT guarantee that the dog will be placed with you. More About Shih Apso Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Cute as a button, this 8 year old, male, Chihuahua mix weighs about 9 lbs. He is a good mannered and sweet-tempered guy who walks well on leash and appears to be crate trained. PeaWee came to us cranky with a stiff neck, and has been to a vet & specialist who suspected of him having something called Cervical Inter vertebral Disc Disease (IVDD=Narrowing of disc in the neck). PeaWee was placed on pain medications and this is managing his condition and restored his sunny disposition. PeaWee must be walked on a harness, as he experiences neck pain due to the IVDD. We will make every attempt to process all applications within 3 business days of receipt // // Zinfandel is too long a name for such a little girl, so her nickname is Zin. Zin is a tricolor (dark brown/black, light brown and cream white) chihuahua that weighs about 4.5 lbs and is approximately 5 years old. She looks like a very tiny pinto pony. Zin was one of almost 200 dogs confiscated from an abandoned illegal puppy mill. Think of her as a super shy canine introvert who is praying no one will ask her to dance, but who might be open to quiet conversation that includes snacks. She has been working on her socialization skills with her foster family for months: she will now come to take treats from their hands, sit nearby, and is slightly less stressed at being leashed, picked up and crated. She does not like to be cuddled, but she adores treats, chases crickets in the backyard, dances for her dinner, steals socks and hoards small dog toys. Zin's ideal person has a quiet adult home with one or two people who have lots and lots of patience, who truly gets just how tough it can be for a little dog in a big world, and who has another little, very social, preferable male chihuahua as a mentor and guide (what can we say, she is a flirt and likes the boys). Zin has super neat potty habits on newspaper, and goes in/out the back door to a fenced area along with the others in her foster family dog pack. A safe fenced area off the house is essential so that leashing her all the time is not required. Are you her lifeline to love? She would love to meet someone who understands canine introverts and has a place for her in their pack. She had a dental done and 3 teeth removed. Zin is spayed, up-to-date on shots, and microchipped. All of our dogs are in private volunteer foster homes, and as such these individuals are most qualified to answer any questions regarding the dog. Shortly after coming into our rescue we learned that Cowboy has a severe heart condition. We immediately scheduled him to be checked out by a specialist, only to be told he is not a candidate for surgical repair. We are currently able to control some of the heart problems with 3 medications, which cost approximately $70/month. He was given a life expectancy up to 3 years give or take and is doing quite well. He is approximately 4 years young, weighs about 13 pounds, and is a total love bug. Cowboy is not the most confident dog in the pack, but he loves his furry companions! He gets along well with dogs, and could care less about the cats. He would probably benefit from the company of a confident dog in the house. He bonded very quickly to his foster mom's daughter, and follows her all over the house. He is house trained and has good doggy manners. Please note that an approved application DOES NOT guarantee that the dog will be placed with you. The final decision rests with our fosters as they know the dogs the best, and please be aware that there may be other applicants interested in the same dog. We continue accepting applications on a dog until the dog is with the new adoptive family in their home. Thank you for visiting our dogs located at www.SecondChanceDogRescue.org

We will make every attempt to process all applications within 3 business days of receipt // // Say hello to Richie... after being abandoned at a local dog park, he found himself in doggy jail. But the kind folks at the shelter saw something special in Richie, and reached out to us to save him. Richie is about 7-8 years old & sweet as can be. He is a happy, older gentleman who enjoys quiet lap time, loves walks & gets along with other dogs. Richie is 7 pounds of adorable! This little guy is quite charismatic. There is something about him that makes people smile. Though he is cautious with his trust, once earned, Richie bonds very deeply with those who care for him. He has a very playful streak but most of the time is happy to follow us around the house and spend time on our laps or sharing a dog bed with his canine buddies. Richie knows to do his business outside. He sleeps through the night just fine and wakes up happy and playful. Richie’s barking is very low for his breed and mostly barks briefly in happiness when his favorite people return home. Richie will be a great companion to anyone with love to give. He does not need much space so an apartment or condo would be fine. He likes walks and is great on the leash. Richie is neutered, microchipped & up to date on vaccines. His adoption fee is $250. All of our dogs are in private volunteer foster homes, and as such these individuals are most qualified to answer any questions regarding the dog. We do not have a central shelter or kennel locations - you must make a private one-on-one meet and greet appointment with each individual dog at the foster family's convenience.
