Posted Breed: Poodle (Miniature) / Shih Tzu / Mixed (medium coat). Attention: come any closer and you will fall for Fallbrook! Consider yourself warned about this adorable, scruffy-yet-dapper little Shih-Poo. We rescued Fallbrook from Kern County in April where he was surrendered by his previous owner. Here at TBL, he spends all day in the company of other dogs young and old and big and small. While he gets along wonderfully with everyone during play time, nap time, and cuddle time, Fallbrook does prefer the perks of private dining. He has a curly white and black coat that should make life a little bit easier on allergy sufferers. Fallbrook is a compact size of about 15 pounds, making him ideal for many types of living situations. At around 4-years of age, Fallbrook is well past his rambunctious puppy years. Most days, you will find him lounging around on his doggie bed, preferring to dog and people-watch as opposed to getting in the thick of the action himself. If you are looking for an easy, calm, cool, and collected little cutie, then Fallbrook might just be your guy! More About Shih-Poo Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Weimaraner / Mixed (short coat). You only need to spend a little time with good ol’ Spikey and your happiness level will spike (pun intended) because this happy-go-lucky pooch is a great mood picker-upper! Spike is currently enjoying the foster life, and his foster parents have nothing but great things to say about him. He is completely house trained, walks excellently on a leash, enjoys playing fetch, follows you around the house with a wagging tail, and most of all loves to snuggle with people. Spike is an active guy who would be a great companion for those that like to run, hike, bike, or even just walk. He runs 4-7 miles with his foster mom and dad every day, and enjoys a nice swim post-run on hot days. You would never be able to guess that Spike is 11-years young (as of 2016) after you’ve seen him climb the steepest parts of Cowles Mountain with volunteers! Believe us when we say his age is not a reflection of his boundless love and vitality. Spike is also great in public and around strange people. This was evident in his frequent trips to local restaurants and coffee shops, where he will gladly accept compliments and a favorable pat on the head from everyone he meets. Spike is very intelligent and food motivated, which are great attributes for training. Even though he has a playful energy, he can also sit quietly chewing on a bully stick for hours or just enjoy having his belly rubbed. We would love to see this sweet, affectionate, and loving guy go to a wonderful forever home that he so deserves! Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: El Cajon, CA
Posted Breed: Basset Hound / Pointer / Mixed (short coat). Whether you believe Tarth to be full of Sapphires or not, Tarth the Basset is definitely full of spunk! This handsome guy came to us from Moreno Valley and has quickly risen in the volunteer favorite ranks. Tarth is a lively, energetic, spritely, and playful low riding dude who digs his daily walks and play time with friends. At around a year and half old, we estimate Tarth is fully-grown at about 40-45 pounds. Tarth gets along well with other dogs, including his besties Stark and Avril, and is very happy to hang out with anybody who obliges him. With a short easy to care for coat, Tarth is as low maintenance in the grooming department as they come. This guy truly lives up to his Basset Hound heritage and is quite amiable to anyone he meets. He could do well in most environments big or small, provided he does get a good amount of daily exercise to keep his mind sharp. Tarth loves playing tug of war, and while he still has some puppylike tendencies in his play, this smart cookie definitely has the aptitude for obedience training. Plus, who can resist those classic Basset eyes just begging you for some love? Come in and see just how great this guy is, we guarantee you’ll want to take him home! If you'd like to meet Tarth, please visit www.thebarkinglot.net/adoption-application. Rayne

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-American Staffordshire Terrier Mix

      Age: Adult
      Location: El Cajon, CA
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed. At The Barking Lot, we’re constantly surrounded by dozens of fun, cute, and loving dogs of all shapes and sizes. Yet, ask any Barking Attendant (volunteer) to name a favorite and you’re likely to hear Rayne’s name make their short list. Why? Well, what’s not to love? This 7-year-old girl is simply an awesome dog whose heartbreaking-to-triumphant story is just as amazing. Rayne was found perched precariously on top of her doghouse in a flooded backyard during heavy rains, where her owner had left her for three weeks while he was in the hospital. Then, while boarded over the holiday season, another dog tore off a piece of her upper jowl through a kennel cage, leaving her with a permanently lopsided grin. Now, at The Barking Lot, Rayne's somewhat “unique” look serves as a constant reminder of what she’s been through. However, despite that rough patch in her journey, Rayne is one of the most loving and lovable dogs you’ll ever meet. She craves attention, and will return the favor by way of giving endless kisses. She loves to hang with people, whether in the play yard, on a hike, or chilling on the couch. She’s housebroken, awesome on a leash, and she loves the “spa treatment” of a bath, soaking up the petting and rubs as much as the suds and water. She probably wasn’t socialized much with other dogs in her youth, and lacks a few doggie communication skills, but became besties with Marcel and other male Barking Lot alumnae. She needs to be properly introduced to other dogs to ensure she's comfortable with them, but she has demonstrated potential for successful dog-to-dog interaction and she has hung out happily at dog-friendly breweries. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Hound / Mixed (short coat). Here’s a fun fact about our pretty girl Pinky: she was actually featured as Pet of the Week for South Bay and Harbor Area shelters! How she found herself in the shelter system in San Pedro beats us, but she has come a long way since her rescue. She spent a few months in foster with our director, where she lived in harmony with resident dogs and learned her house manners. Today, Pinky is housetrained, knows her basic commands, knows fetch, is good with dogs, and loves to gives kisses to her favorite human companions. She does need a firm and experienced owner who can show her right from the beginning that Pinky is not in charge, but once you set those initial boundaries with her she is just like any other happy-go-lucky pooch. Pinky particularly loves to play with her friends Popeye and Blossom, and she spends her time roaming the play yards, wrestling with her canine buddies, or chasing after toys you throw for her. She also enjoys going on walks or skateboard-walks with some of our volunteers! Pinky is a playful, active, loving, and great dog who would make a wonderful hiking or running buddy. She is pictured at a little over 3 years of age, late fall 2013. She tipped the scales at an even 50 pounds at her last weigh-in. If you think Pinky sounds like the right girl from you and you’re up to the task, Pinky will joyfully reciprocate with a lifetime of cuddles and kisses! Posted Breed: Basset Hound / Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Size is no indication of personality, and this holds very true for our new favorite low-rider Shorty! He is a bundle of fun packed into a stout 40-pound package. We rescued Shorty in November from San Bernardino where he was picked up as a stray. He has gorgeous red and white coloring, a short and easy-to-care-for coat, inquisitive chestnut colored eyes, and a sturdy and adorable low-to-the-ground physique. Shorty has the strength and affection of a Staffy and the sweet nature of a Bassett. He is a natural people pleaser and will happily wag his tail at the sight of you. He enjoys treats and is all paws on deck when it comes to training and rewards time. When we get him out on a leash, he is eager to explore and loves to check out his surroundings. When we sit down with him for some quality one-on-one time, he will snug right up nice and close and gently wag his tail while enjoying a nice patting. We estimate Shorty to be around 2 years of age, which means he still has a whole lifetime of love and affection to give to his true forever family! Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Beautiful Starfish is a star indeed! She’s got the whole package: she’s smart, sweet, and has a stunning smile that is guaranteed to brighten anyone’s day. Starfish is a very affectionate girl who loves to be around people. Starfish is currently enjoying the good life from the comfort of a foster while she awaits her forever family, and her foster parents have nothing but complimentary things to say about her. Starfish is a wonderful houseguest who is non-destructive, stays off the couch when asked, quiet, rarely barks, crate trained, and completely house trained. She loves to just follow her humans around and is always very interested in whatever her people are cooking, eating, reading, or watching. Starfish has an endless zest for life and nothing ever seems to bring her down. She is great with people of all ages, even little kids, although she doesn’t seem to realize how big she is (around 45-50 pounds) and tries to sit in everyone’s laps. At almost 3 years of age, Starfish still wakes up with a peppy happy-go-lucky energy every day and her foster parents dub her the happiest dog in the world. Starfish has gone through a training program with Pawtopia Dog Training where she learned sit and down, and is working on stay and come. Starfish worked hard in her classes with her manners with other dogs, and still needs a little more practice being introduced to other dogs and cats. Since Starfish is very people motivated, she will do best with a family who is dedicated to spending the time and effort to continue her training. Believe us when we tell you this happy, loving, intelligent, fun-loving and wonderfully affectionate girl is well worth the effort! When we rescued him properly, Shep was hesitant and shy with people. However, within one day of being at The Barking Lot, Shep emerged from under the table to take treats out of the hand of a volunteer, and within two days, he was wagging his tail at the sight of people. Since then, Shep now greets us at the office window, gives doggie kisses, and willingly goes on walks with volunteers that are strangers to him. Though he is a little jumpy around quick movements, Shep shows that he naturally trusts people and wants to become everyone's friend. Shep responds very well to the example of other dogs and would probably do best in a home with another dog who is confident and can mentor him in the socialization he didn't receive as a young pup. Shep is a young dog and has many years ahead of him, and he has come so far already that it will just take being in a loving home to bring him fully out of his shell. Much as the Kithara was played to accompany dances and epic recitations, Kitara the pup was made to accompany you on life’s many epic adventures! Kitara is the embodiment of a faithful sidekick, and her favorite pastime is following her favorite people around like a happy little shadow. Kitara is estimated to be around 2 years old and roughly 50 pounds, and she is truly one of the mellowest and easygoing girls you will meet. She knows how to go to the bathroom outside, and walks very well on a leash. When she’s not enjoying daily walks with volunteers, or following her favorite humans around, Kitara likes to lay back and people-watch. This beautiful lady has a short and easy-to-care-for coat, a reassuring smile, and lovely brown eyes. He was found on the streets of Apple Valley with his mom, dad Darry (http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/25895589), and 3 siblings, including Ponyboy and Sodapop. They were all wary of humans and appeared to have limited familiarity with them. The family was taken in to the local shelter, and the mom and smallest sibling were adopted quickly. The other 4 made it to TBL where they are now getting socialized and waiting patiently for their forever homes. Dally is the shyest of the family, and also the most unique looking. He has a handsome caramel swirl coat and beautiful, soulful green-brown eyes. Dally will need a patient and loving family to help him warm up to the world and come out of his shell. He will be worth the time and effort though, as he already shows signs of being affectionate and sweet. Dally shares his space with his brothers and we think he would do best in a home with other dogs to show him the ropes and prove to him that his humans can be trusted.
