Posted Breed: Shih Tzu / Poodle (Miniature) / Mixed (long coat). Meet Timon! Breed: Poodle/ Shih Tzu Gender: Male Adoption Fee: $75 Date into Rescue: 11/3/2014 Reason for being in rescue: Timon was turned into a local shelter by his previous owner who no longer wanted him. Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? Strong personality Weight: Est 25 lbs Height: Est 15" What is my personality like? Timon has now been in our care for a year and a half. We have watched this fella grow like a wildflower. When he first came into our rescue, he was untouchable. He was grouchy, grumpy and flat out mean! Of course, who could blame him... he was dumped at a high kill facility by his family because they "didn't want him." Over the months we have given him a lot of space, and he has been very obedient and learned our routine well. Just recently we took him out of his comfort zone and let him live in our of our offices, which is a lot quieter with more one on one attention. He is really a GREAT boy once he gets to know you. He has established a light bond with one of our employees and he is just fine with her. Given some time, Timon is going to be a wonderful companion dog for someone. He is house trained, does great with other animals of all sizes, and is crate trained. He walks great on a leash and loves to go for a car ride. Timon does have to be sedation groomed, however if the right, patient groomer would try him...we think he could make progress with that. He is okay being groomed everywhere except his face. Timon loves toys and he really, really loves treats. He is food motivated, he is calm and well mannered. He needs someone with experience, and an adult only home because he is known to snap if he gets aggravated. Who I am seeking: Timon is seeking a couple without children who is willing to work though some of his behavioral problems. Someone who will help teach him that most people are kind and can be his buddy. Age: est 10 years old Please understand that these are rescued dogs, and sometimes their ages are only a guess. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture, and not to discriminate against older dogs. You never know which dog will steal your heart when you meet them! How I act when I first meet new people: Cautious, he either likes someone or doesn't. Please note - we do not ship dogs. If you are interested in adopting, please take a look at the distance between the foster home location and your location and make sure you are willing to make that trip. To apply, please visit our webpage at www.carolinapoodlerescue.org and visit the tab on the left that directions you to the online application. Please note that when screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, color, age, etc. Others here may be a better fit for you. It is very difficult to get to know a living animal from a picture and a short description. Since we are constantly getting in new dogs, this may be a dog not in our listings yet. We want you to be very happy with your new companion and will make suggestions based on what you tell us about you. You can also read our adoption tips page for hints and helps on adopting a rescued dog. http://www.carolinapoodlerescue.org/AdoptionTips.shtml or for general information on Carolina Poodle Rescue, please visit our FAQs - http://www.carolinapoodlerescue.org/FAQGeneral.shtml

More About Shih-Poo Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Date into Rescue: 5/7/2015 ~~My age: est 3-5 years Reason for being in rescue: Sabrina was turned into a kill shelter by her family Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? None known Weight: 8 Height: 10" Fence needed? No What kind of home would be best for me? Sadly we do not have much history on Sabrina, however if her behavior is indicative of her past...it was not a positive one. I will never forget the day we picked her up. We were actually going to the shelter to pick up another few dogs, and we saw Sabrina. She was hairless, crusty and absolutely petrified....and of course, on the Euthanasia list. Touching her bare-handed was not an option. We got her back to the farm where we started making progress. We treated her skin for allergies and it took several months but she has finally grown a full coat back!! She is great with other dogs and has turned into a happy gal. She has also done well walking on a leash for our caregivers! Sabrina needs someone who is familiar with chihuahuas as she has a few quirks. Once she trusts you, she is a breeze to deal with. Sabrina only snaps if she gets very frightened (which happens less and less as time goes on). She has never actually bitten anyone. Sabrina is a sweetheart who is full of life and would really thrive with some one on one attention! UPDATE: Sabrina is becoming more confident everyday. She is such a sweet girl, and does not have one mean bone in her body. Sometimes when you pick her her up she yelps, more so out of fear than anything else. Once she gets acquainted with you, she wants nothing but love and affection. She gets along great with her fellow doggy friends and usually just lays low. She is very polite, she doesn't bark much nor does she get in any kind of scruffles with other dogs. Her favorite thing to do is curl up underneath a blanket and snooze the day away. How I act when I first meet new people: Timid until she gets to know you House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. Please note - we do not ship dogs. Date into Rescue: 07/11/2015 Reason for being in rescue: Found as a stray in North Carolina Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? no Weight: est 18 lbs Height: est 12 inches at the shoulder Adoption Fee: $240 Fence needed? No What kind of home would be best for me? An adult only home, as we have seen him resource guard a few times, Lollipup Jack needs a strong leader in his home to correct his attitude at times with resource guarding. What is my personality like? Overall, Lollipup Jack is a very sweet guy. He is friendly and happy, and gets along well with other dogs. He will sometimes go into his crate and growl if you try to grab him. He likes his own space! Once he is out of the crate he is very friendly and loving. He will guard the crate. Jack gets along really well with other dogs and loves to play. He is crate trained and overall has good manners. He will make an excellent addition to someone who is confident and a good trainer. You need to understand resource guarding and how to redirect his behavior to the positive. Update 2/16/2017 notes from caregiver.- "Lollipup Jack! First with the bad habits. He's crate aggressive. So crate aggressive he gets mad when I crate his cottage mates. Inside the trailer he's more uptight and aggravates other dogs in their face. Constantly barking at them when he's wound up. But outside he does MUCH better. He let me walk him. But he pulls a good bit. He's such the cuddle bug and a playful nipper. He played with a toy with me for a little while. He will sit and laid down a few times. He would probably do his absolute best as an only dog. And if he has any siblings they need to be patient. He barked at Salem the cat a lot. No kids. He's a big kisser! And loves to tickle your nose with his poofy hair." 7/6/2017: All Jack is, is a huge love bug with a not so good reputation. He is very loving but he is also head strong. Even though he has his own behavioral issues, that does not mean he cannot be loved. He just needs a stern and patient leader to help him over come his obstacles. How I act when I first meet new people: Friendly House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. Date into Rescue: 09/06/2013 Reason for being in rescue: found as a stray in Union County Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Weight: Est 30 lb Height: Medium Fence needed? no Adoption Fee: $200 Special Needs? Keegan needs to be fed a grain free diet to help maintain his healthy, shiny coat. He came to CPR with chronic ear infections and heartworms and both have been resolved. What kind of home would be best for me? Someone who will work on building Keegan's trust and confidence so he can become the amazing dog he was meant to be. Ideally someone who is home more often than not so that Keegan can get lots of love and attention. He gets along well with other dogs and currently lives with several in his foster home. But his forever home will be rewarded with a wonderful dog and shining personality. Keegan has been in a foster home for a few months now and has been coming out of his shell. He has gone from a very timid dog to part of his foster family's pack and even looks forward to leash walks every day! Date into Rescue: 12/27/15 Reason for being in rescue: Found as a stray Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? No Weight: est 40 lbs Height: growing Adoption Fee: $200 Fence needed? Preferred, she needs good exercise daily. What kind of home would be best for me? Deanna is a happy, goofy big puppy! She is friendly and loves everyone. She would do great in many different environments. Although we have not seen her around kids, we feel she would be a great addition to a family with kids; she keeps us on our toes! She is very loving and affectionate, and pretty calm for a puppy. She and her brother are best friends and we think she would do great with another dog in the home. Deanna recently spent one-on-one time with a caregiver and he shared: "Deanna needs a lot of work on a leash. She will chew on them. She loved playing outside. While inside she was mostly focused on playing with the crated dogs. She is a serious love bug and will have no problem becoming connected to an adopter." UPDATE: 10/11/2016 We cant help but wonder why Miss Deanna is still here! This girl has made huge improvement since she has came in. She no longer pulls on the leash unless something catches her attention. She can sit on command is highly treat motivated so teaching her commands would be easy with time. Deanna is dog selective.. she only likes certain dogs and she must be the leader with her doggy friends. When she is with other dogs, she is a completely different dog and becomes a robust, playful dog. Alone, she just wants to sniff everywhere while being by your side. Deanna is extremely loyal and can be your constant best friend if you let her. How I act when I first meet new people: Friendly House trained? What kind of home would be best for me? 6/23/2017"I'm Brett, I was found a stray with my bud Deanna by one of the caregivers here at CPR. I have been here for a little over a year now,, I am getting pretty lonely and really want to find some family of my own. When I first got here I was still a puppy, and I think that is what scared some people away. But since I have grown wiser and older I have calmed down a great deal! I love love love affection, sometimes I think I'm a little lap dog. Although I am still active, and love to explore.. I still like cuddling up next to someone I care about and having their attention at the end of the day. You wanna what kind of tricks I can do? I can sit, stand back up, catch a treat in my mouth and I will even let the treat roll down my nose. Give me a chance!" 2016- Brett is a sweet and loving guy. He is a big goofy puppy who loves attention and likes to show affection. He is playful and friendly although we found out recently he's afraid of cats so a cat free home is now part of Brett's wish list. He is as sweet and easy as they come! Brett has the hound type personality down pat. He loves to romp and run in the field until he wears himself out. Brett would be great for an adventurous- outdoorsy type of person. He is friendly as he can be but would do well with someone that has experience training dogs or someone that is willing to further training in a obedience class. Brett recently spent one-on-one time with a caregiver and he shared, "Brett's leash training needs work but he did well. He was active and enjoyed being outside more than in. He's a love bug and attaches to you quickly." How I act when I first meet new people: Friendly! House trained? Date into Rescue: 12/3/2016 Reason for being in rescue: Found as stray after hurricane Mathew, Horry County Shelter. Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? Chewbacca is people selective and needs someone that can work with his issues! Weight: Estimated 50-60 lbs Height: Estimated 20" at the shoulder. Adoption Fee: $399 Fence needed? Yes, but also should be leashed walked at first. Chewbacca is nervous in new situations. What kind of home would be best for me? An only dog home, must have patience, He is also Male selective. What is my personality like? Chewbacca was found as a stray after Hurricane Mathew. When he first arrived, he was terrified and shut down.. but since then he has came great strides into the dog he is now. He always wants to be on the go and loves to have things that keep him busy, outside of his crate he is back and forth between doors just itching to do something! He does need some leash work, once his nose is to the ground he gets carried away and pulls. He has sat for a treat before, but tends to get distracted sometimes. Chewbacca is nervous in new situations and may growl and try to snap/bite but after he knows he is okay he loves to have attention and his back scratched.. but only if you can keep his curious mind still long enough! (It can be hard to get a read on Chewbacca because he is people selective! Some people he is perfectly okay with and while others, not so much. He needs a dominant and patient owner that can help him work through his issues.) Caregiver update 6/29/17: "If Chewy likes you, he likes you. If he doesn't, he will let you know that. He is not the overly affectionate type of dog. When he's comfortable enough, he will let his guard down and let you love on him. Showing too much love back doesn't seem to be his thing. Playing hard to get? Maybe! He did pretty good on leash; not too much pulling. He enjoyed his time in the big field where he got to explore all the new smells and see all the new sights. He listens well and so far has adjusted well here at the rescue. He needs a patient owner that will allow Chewbacca to be himself and get fully comfortable. He doesn't seem interested in toys, but can sit on command. He's a catch for sure, just need to find the lucky owners who will realize it." How I act when I first meet new people: Cautious, and may snap/bite out of fear. you have to take it easy once I warm up I am fine. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. Date into Rescue: 02/21/2011, returned 07/2016 Reason for being in rescue: originally an owner surrender due to not receiving enough attention, but came back to us due to her resource guarding Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? yes - resource guards Weight: est 54 lb Height: est 22 in Adoption Fee: $350.00 Fence needed? Yes What kind of home would be best for me? An adult only home with an experienced owner. No children. Update as of May 2017: Whitley loves people (both men and women). She is intelligent, confident, inquisitive and active. She loves to take walks and "explore" the world. On leashed walks, she is so excited to be outside that she will pull on the leash at first. As a result, I generally let her run around the fenced yard to burn off some energy before putting a leash on her. After doing this, she walks well on the leash. However, she will pull if she sees something of interest. Whitley was relinquished to CPR because she bit the owner and her adult son. The bite to the owner occurred when she tried to take away a piece of chicken from her. (It had bones in it, so the owner persisted, even though Whitley had growled and then showed teeth.) The bite to the son occurred when Whitley ran out an open door. He grabbed her by the hips to stop her, and she whirled around and bit him. (I do not know if this was a reflex reaction or intended bite.) I have found that Whitley will "trade up." For example, she was was exploring a muddy area and didn't want to get out. So I asked if she wanted to take a walk. She loves to walk, so she left the mud. On another occasion, she got a hold of some cinnamon rolls. I approached her, and she growled at me. I respected this warning, and backed off. If I had been able to trade a "higher value items" (such as hamburger), she probably would have let me "trade up" for the rolls. However, I didn't have anything of value, so I let her have the rolls as they weren't anything "harmful." It's possible that Whitley will get over this guarding as she builds a trusting relationship with someone, but I can't tell you for sure if this will happen. Fortunately, I have always been able to either "trade up," or she had an item that wasn't an issue. Because of her resource guarding and bite history, CPR requires that Whitley go to an experienced adult only home. (No children.) Whitley is OK with some dogs. There was another dog in her previous home, and she regularly goes outside with several large dogs. She may be OK with other dogs in a new home, but I would be cautious about bringing her into a home with another dog due to her resource guarding history. (Resource guarding with multiple dogs present is something that's beyond my personal experience level, but many people have more knowledge and experience with this issue than I do.) Whitley is very intelligent. Her previous owners taught her a long list of commands. She enjoys interacting with people, and will do well with someone who uses positive reinforcement training (treats/rewards and praise). When she arrived at CPR, she reacted to mops and brooms by barking. I've worked on this with her, and she seems to have gotten over this - provided she is awake. If she is sleeping in her kennel, and someone wakes her up when cleaning, she will bark. (Maybe she just doesn't like being woken up!) Whitley loves to run and play in the larger fenced field at CPR. When I ask if she wants to take a walk, she will run over to me. She loves adults, and will go up to men and women without hesitation. (I haven't tried her with kids, only because we haven't encountered any yet.) I feel that Whitley is ready to find her forever home. She would do well in an adult only home that is knowledgeable about dogs. Update/ as of August 2016: Whitley is a gorgeous orange (apricot) Standard Poodle with white markings. She is active and curious. She loves people, and would do well with a confident, experienced owner who can spend time with her. She enjoys taking walks, but will pull a little on the the leash. During a recent temperament test, Whitley was OK with dogs (large and small) and cats. However, we feel that she would do best as an only pet. She is an active dog, and reportedly harassed the other dog in her previous home. We feel she may harass a cat, as well. She needs a home where someone can work with her one-on-one. (Only pet, please!) Whitley's food resource guarding seems have improved while in a controlled situation. I was able to give her treats while she was alongside six other dogs, and she was polite and patient the entire time. However, she was in an unfamiliar place, and on her best behavior. She still reacts strongly to mops and brooms. (We will work on this.) When she feels threatened, she will give a clear warning signal by growling. For example, when someone approached from behind her to remove her from a muddy area outside, she growled to let the person know that she did not like them coming up behind her. She is highly food motivated, and will "work" for food! She is leash trained, house trained, and knows many commands (sit, down, etc). She loves men and women. Due to her background and reactivity, we feel she should be in an adult only home. (No children!) Whitley is OK with being groomed, and stands nicely on the grooming table. Our groomer said that Whitley has the best coat she's ever seen! Update as of July 2016: Whitley was adopted from CPR years ago and unfortunately has now returned due to some behavioral issues. Her family reported that Whitley has shown aggression when being asked to do something she didn't want to do and aggression over food. Since she has been with us here she has shown reactivity towards mops and brooms, and she does resource guard her food. Due to her resource guarding issues we feel she would fit best in a home without children. Whitley needs a home with a dog savvy person, someone confident in their dog handling skills, because Ms. Whitley is going to push the envelope and see what she can and cannot get away with. Once she is made aware that that behavior is unacceptable and wasn't going to be tolerated, she behaves like the good dog we know she can be. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. Yes - Diabetes Insipidus Weight: 13 lbs Height: est 13" Adoption Fee: I'm special Fence needed? Yes - Buckles is very active and loves to run. What does Diabetes Insipidus mean? Buckles drinks water - all day - and urinates frequently as a result. This is a rare form of diabetes that is caused by a deficiency of the pituitary hormone (vasopressin) which regulates kidney function. This disorder is very uncommon and is not curable. Here is what happens in the body -Buckles kidney's do not produce the hormone that neutralizes toxins in the body thereby making urine. Her kidney's can accept water but can't process it correctly. Water passes through her body very quickly and that is why she peees so much but often her "urine" is just pure water that has passed through. It does not have a urine odor at all and if you wipe it up there is no yellow to it. It is not what is called concentrated. Her body uses water but Buckles has to consume much more water than a normal dog for her body to get what it needs while her system is pushing it out much faster than it should. Imagine a water hose in the summer running full blast - and your drinking from it. You can get what you need - and Buckles body grabs what it needs from this rush of water going through it - but much of the water is wasted and therefore run on the ground just like our summer water hose. Your body functions more like a glass. Her body functions like that hose. Because of this rapid rush of water, Buckles must have access to water at all times so when she needs it,she can get it. If not she will dehydrate and that will lead to death. Buckles is currently on a hormone-replacement medication (given through eye drops twice per day). It is the hormone she is lacking that makes the urine. It is helping a little but we do not know how much. We are working with her to find out what is the best dosage for her. The medication is about $120 per month. What is my personality like? All that sounds frightening and it is but there is more to Buckles than bad plumbing. Buckles is spunky, friendly and loving. She is energetic and must have a fenced in yard to run in. She gets along with other dogs and cats - and would be a great playmate to another dog her size or larger. Buckles is eager to please and bonds quickly. Buckles does have a "house training" issue only because of her condition. For someone who is retired and is home all the time, her house training isn't much of a problem. She must be taken outside every two hours, and her house training is basically controlled. She would love a house with a doggie door. She goes to the door in her foster home if she needs to go out. She wears diapers if her foster mom is going out more than 2 hours. Buckles cannot be deprived of water as it can be fatal to her. How I act when I first meet new people: Happy, friendly and gregarious. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. Date into Rescue: 3/7/16 Reason for being in rescue: breeder/hoarder Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? none Weight: 8.2 lbs Height: est 8" at the shoulder Adoption Fee: $ 149 Fence needed? yes What kind of home would be best for me? Sophie was one of many dogs seized from a hoarder in Abbeville, SC. Many of the dogs were terrified and under socialized with humans and have taken a long time to warm up to our caregivers. Sophie has to yet come around and be fully comfortable with human touch. Sophie will need a quiet low key home with an experienced patient adopter that understands that it will take time for her to warm up and be comfortable. What is my personality like? Sophie is an active girl that loves to go outside and play with her many friends. She would probably do best in a home with another chihuahua or small dog to learn from and help build her confidence. Sophie is a very fearful dog and almost feral dog. Sophie needs someone that understands that it is going to take time and work for her to become socialized around people. Sophie needs someone with a lot of patience, a gentle touch, and someone that is up for the challenge. Sophie is crate trained and runs right into her crate, which is great getting her to vet visits and where she needs to go. She really needs help learning she can trust humans.. and with many, many dogs here there isn't enough time to sit with this sweet girl and get her used to the human touch. He can only eat rabbit kibble. Weight: est 18 lbs Height: est 12" at the shoulder Adoption Fee: $200.00 Fence needed No but he would enjoy a fenced in yard or some place to go play off leash a couple of times a week What kind of home would be best for me? Alfie came to CPR with hardly any hair and sarcoptic mange. After months of treatment, he was still having issues with his skin so off to vet he went. The vet's office staff decided they liked having Alfie around so much that they are fostering him until he gets adopted. On top of the mange, Alfie also has food allergies, and is now only able to eat rabbit based kibble. We are unsure of Alfie's true breeds. The breeds we listed are our best guess based on his looks and behavior. Alfie has grown a lot of his hair back, but we don't know if he is partly Chinese crested or if his skin is just so badly damaged that his hair just won't grow back in certain spots. Alfie has shown some resource guarding and would thrive best with an experienced patient adopter that can work with him on this issue. He guards his toys, bed, and his home. He would do best in a home with few visitors and no children. What is my personality like? Alfie is one smart boy! He knows how to sit and twirl, and he is a fairly quick study, especially when treats are involved. Alfie absolutely loves to play with toys, but he has shown some resource guarding with his toys so he needs to have some rules and structure when it comes to playtime. Alfie is determined, intelligent, independent, and loving. How I act when I first meet new people: Alfie is finicky with new people. He likes some new people and others he does not like.
