Posted Breed: Shih Tzu. Meet Teddy, a 3 year old Shih Tzu mix. Teddy is so sweet that if strangers enter the home he will walk up to them and give them a kiss. He is sweet and affectionate and would thrive with someone who loves to cuddle him and give him kisses. He's really a big teddy bear who is just waiting to give his heart and soul to a special person. Teddy loves to run outside in a fenced yard and play with toys. Although he enjoys having other dogs around for company, he would do fine as an only dog. Teddy is used to going in the backyard for potty breaks. He's been known to have a few accidents on the outdoor deck but it's easy enough to clean up and wash off with some soap. Teddy goes on walks but is used to the backyard for most of his breaks out so we're hoping to find him a fenced yard to avoid accidents. Walking him on leash is not a problem but we offer the advice about the yard to ensure a smoother transition since this is what he is used to. Teddy was a bit itchy when he came into the rescue but washing him once a week keeps his skin and coat shiny clean. He's on a grain free food that helps keep him healthy. Contact us to meet this Teddy Bear.

More About Shih Tzu Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Shih Tzu / Mixed (short coat). Hi there! My name is Snoopy - just like Charlie Brown’s best friend and I’m ready to be yours! I’m a two-year old Shih Tzu mix. I have nice long legs made for walking and prancing and playing with my dog friends. I’m not clingy and I don’t need to be by your side all day to be a happy boy. When I need a tummy rub or some lovin’, I channel the real Snoopy and walk around on my back legs. One of my FAVORITE things to do is play! I love playing with my dog friends so I hope my new home has another friendly dog that I can be buddies with. I’m house trained and love my fenced-in yard for potty-breaks. I’m waiting patiently for my forever home. Will you be my Charlie Brown? UPDATE- Snoopy was recently vacation fostered temporarily by another foster mom and she wanted her thoughts of Snoopy entered in his BIO. Temp Foster- I can’t begin to let everyone know what a sweetie this cuddle bug is. Snoopy is a quiet soul that is just looking for love. He rests quietly near you, just absorbing all the good life has to offer him now. When we go outside for a potty break, I usually sit on a swinging chair in the backyard to hang out a little while with the pups. Snoopy will rub up against my leg like a cat for attention. He’s a bit lover boy! He LOVES his chewy bones and will sit quietly savoring every bite. He’s healthy and very good with other dogs but he doesn’t like any other dogs trying to take his chewy bone away from him. This sweetie is a real catch and anyone reading this should hurry to apply because he’s a great little dog.

      Location: springfield, VA
Posted Breed: Poodle (Toy) (long coat). Sweet Brie is a toy poodle who is 3 years old and weighs only 6 pounds. Brie has a gentle nature and is a very quiet little girl. She feels more secure when she is near her person so will follow you from room to room. When she is sitting on your lap and looks up at you, you would think that her whole world revolves around you! Brie really likes other dogs. She wags her tail and dances around other dogs. She will lay next to them and has learned how to play. Brie came from a group of dogs rescued from a puppy mill. We’re hoping to find her a home where her new guardian will introduce Brie slowly to new experiences. She is a vibrant little girl who loves attention and races around the yard playing with other dogs. We’re asking that Brie goes to a home with a fenced yard and to someone home part of the day since she needs a break outside every few hours. She is not used to all of the new sights and sounds she encounters on walks so having a fenced yard resolves this issue because she will be able to get used to the backyard for bathroom breaks and then can be transitioned to a routine of walks for elimination over time. She is being leash trained now though. Brie is doing much better with her house training habits now that she has been in a foster home for several months. She does fine loose in the house and is not destructive. Brie came from a history of being stuck in a cage so crating her is not a recommended because that is yucky since she spent her life stuck in a cage. If you enjoy having a little cuddle bug by your side, then Brie is the right baby for you. You will become her whole world and we’ll be there right by your side to help with any questions you need answered along the way. CHR offers behavioral support to help transitional newly adopted dogs into their new home.

Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie (long coat). Meet Mopsie! Mopsie is a precious 7-year old Yorkie. She is a gentle, low-key girl who likes to relax quietly near her people. However, don't think that means that she's a couch potato! This girl LOVES to play with squeaky toys and can entertain herself for a while just chasing her toys. Check out her video to see her in action! Mopsie gets along fine with other dogs in the home (not sure about cats just yet). She came from a very busy household that was a bit too hectic for her so a quiet home with no children would be perfect for her. Mopsie doesn't really care for walks longer than a few minutes so a home with a fenced yard would be ideal. She is house trained. Mopsie had a dental so her teeth are all nice and clean for her new family. She also had bloodwork that shows that she is in excellent shape. This girl will make a loving and loyal companion. Don't hesitate to come meet her!

Posted Breed: Shih Tzu (long coat). Meet Rascal. This spunky little boy is a little rascal. He loves to play and keep busy. Please keep this in mind if you work during the day. He's not a good fit if you want to take him to work because he is just a puppy and you will never get any work done. Rascal enjoys taking walks. His foster parent takes him on walks and he enjoys meeting new people and dogs. Rascal is being fostered with several other small dogs and enjoys playing. He sleeps next to his furry friends too sometimes. He doesn't like sharing his bones though with his 4-legged buddies so keep this in mind if you have other male doggies. Rascal is allergic to corn products so a grainfree diet is best for him. We're asking for an owner who has experience or owned a Shih Tzu or similar breed in the past. Rascal is only 10 pounds. Rascal is neutered and utd on vaccines. He is microchipped. Posted Breed: Shih Tzu / Mixed. This is Liam aka LeeLee. He is a very sweet 2-year-old boy! Liam is a house trained, neutered, 20lb shih Tzu mix. Liam has a long, soft, and luxurious coat that is wonderful for petting and he loves to be brushed. One of Liam’s favorite things is food but he is not a beggar. He loves his toys, especially the ones with squeakers. Every day at his foster’s house he takes each and every toy out of the toy basket to play. He is a great snuggler and enjoys being a couch companion. He is a good watchdog too. He loves to sit in the window and watch the goings on in the neighborhood but he is not overly barky. He does alert if something “special” is going on. The ideal home for Liam will be a quiet home with someone who is around part of the day. Liam was quite nervous when he came to us but he has blossomed nicely and now walks bravely on a leash. He enjoys his daily strolls around the neighborhood, but also enjoys playing outside and rolling in the grass. A fenced yard would be great for him. Meeting new people can be scary for Liam so he needs to be introduced slowly. Liam likes other dogs but can be fearful of larger dogs.
