Posted Breed: Shih Tzu. Ideal Home- Fenced yard required. Quiet low traffic home works best for Teddy. A family familiar with feeding grain-free food is ideal due to Teddy's history of some food allergies. Meet Teddy, a 3 year old Shih Tzu mix. Teddy is so sweet that if strangers enter the home he will walk up to them and give them a kiss. He is sweet and affectionate and would thrive with someone who loves to cuddle him and give him kisses. He's really a big teddy bear who is just waiting to give his heart and soul to a special person. Teddy loves to run outside in a fenced yard and play with toys. Although he enjoys having other dogs around for company, he would do fine as an only dog. Teddy is used to going in the backyard for potty breaks. He's been known to have a few accidents on the outdoor deck but it's easy enough to clean up and wash off with some soap. Teddy goes on walks but is used to the backyard for most of his breaks out so we're hoping to find him a fenced yard to avoid accidents. Walking him on leash is not a problem but we offer the advice about the yard to ensure a smoother transition since this is what he is used to. He's on a grain free food that helps keep him healthy. Contact us to meet this Teddy Bear. We want to provide as much information about our foster dogs, but sometimes it’s hard to do in the simple dog biography listed above. CHR will list the Ideal Home section to help applicants better understand what the rescue and foster parents are looking for this particular rescue dog’s future home. Please, take a minute to read the Ideal Home section .

More About Shih Tzu Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Shiffon
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Shih Tzu / Brussels Griffon / Mixed (long coat). Meet Bodhi! This little guy only weighs 10 pounds and is house trained. Sweet Bodhi is a recent arrival. He is very playful and loves to jump on your lap for cuddles. Bodhi gets along with other dogs but will do best in a home without other dogs or where the other dog does not try to play with him. While Bodhi is a loving little guy, he does show signs of stress in response to certain triggers. For example, Bodhi will bark at men. This is not unusual behavior for rescue dogs—we see it all the time. However, he will need positive reinforcement training to help reduce his fear of strangers. And even with training, Bodhi’s fear of men could take years to overcome. CHR will provide you with the FREE services of a canine behavioral counselor to help with this issue. For the reasons discussed above, CHR is asking for an applicant who has raised a dog before since working with a fearful dog requires prior experience. CHR is also requiring that the home Bodhi goes to is an all-adult low-traffic home where his fear triggers will be reduced (we describe this as a “Zen” atmosphere—see below.) What is a "Zen" atmosphere? 1. A home with only adults, no young children. We like children but in certain cases as in the case of Bodhi, who is stressed from recent and possibly past mental trauma, a home without children is the safest way to ensure that no incidents of nipping or biting occur. 2. A quiet neighborhood with low foot traffic where you can walk Bodhi Example: an apartment building with narrow hallways and lots of people walking by is the opposite of low foot traffic. Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie (long coat). Meet Bailey. Bailey just arrived at CHR so we don't know too much about him but here is what we do know: 1. He's super cute 2. He's 7 pounds 3. He's very sweet and does not nip at all 4. He's very quiet. Bailey was just neutered and is current on vaccines. He was a matted mess when he came to us so we're taking our time grooming him but so far he’s cleaned up pretty well! He's just been through a stressful experience so we want to take it easy on him. His photos do not show him at his best yet—keep checking back for new ones. We want to let him relax a bit so we can get to know him better and help him find the right home. Bailey seems okay around other dogs but he’s a little shy right now. Bailey is housetrained. We think he will need a mid-day break to avoid accidents. We we don’t know if he is leash trained but we will test him within the next few weeks. We’re told Bailey likes to guard his food so we will be testing him during his stay in foster care. We want to make sure we understand all his behaviors so his new parents fully understand his needs. Please understand that Bailey is not totally adoptable just yet because we still need some time to get to know him better. Feel free to apply for him but we may put a hold on your application until we fully understand all of his needs. This bio will be updated as we learn more things about Bailey so this information may change in the next few weeks. Check back soon for updates on Bailey!

      Peanut-AKA K...

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Unknown breed. Meet Peanut! Peanut came from a Maryland shelter. This little munchkin has been through a lot. Peanut was terrified at the shelter and snapped at people a few times. However, CHR has Peanut in a quiet foster home will low foot traffic and he is doing FANTASTICALLY there. We think that with additional time and training, he will do even better. Peanut is such a character. He lies on his back for belly rubs. When you’re lying in bed, he likes to crawl on your chest and cover your face with kisses. It's why we named him “the Kissy Monster!” Peanut LOVES to play. He will play with toys for as long as he can and sometimes bark at his foster mom asking for more play time. Peanut is housetrained and has no accidents. In his current foster home, Peanut uses a securely fenced yard for elimination purposes. We will be testing him to see how he does on walks next. Peanut is scheduled to have a dental soon. Peanut was diagnosed with dry eye. He will need to stay on cyclosporine daily FOR LIFE to treat the dry eye condition. The cost per month to treat dry eye is $35.00. The medication is specially compounded at a pharmacy, which is the cheapest option. CHR is requiring that Peanut goes to an experienced dog owner or someone who is willing to see our dog trainer for 4-6 free dog training sessions. A home without kids is better suited for Peanut. Peanut just needs a quiet home setting to relax while he recuperates from all the stress of losing his home and the trauma of being at the shelter for a few weeks. If you have a quiet home setting with a relaxed “Zen” atmosphere, please email us for more information. CHR will provide Peanut’s new owner with a positive reinforcement trainer for no charge. We want to make sure his new parent is happy and feeling confident that they have all the information needed to make sure Peanut leads a stress-free and pawsitive life. What is a "Zen" atmosphere? 1. A home with only adults, no young children. We like children but, in certain cases as in the case of Peanut, who is stressed from recent and possibly past mental trauma, a home without children is the safest way to ensure that no incidents of nipping or biting occur. 2. A quiet neighborhood with low foot traffic where you can walk Peanut. An example of a setting that does not have low foot traffic is an apartment building with narrow hallways and lots of people walking by.

Posted Breed: Shih Tzu. Sadie is a true gem. She came to CHR from a local shelter in rough shape but, after a few months in our care, she’s really thriving. Her right eye was injured in her last home and she lost her vision in the eye but that hasn’t slowed her down one bit. Sadie is very sweet and affectionate—she loves to cuddle and sit by your side. Because Sadie came to us in rough shape, we have her on a high-quality diet supplemented with fish oil and she is looking much better. Sadie does fine around other dogs but we can tell she came from a home with no other dogs. We're giving preference to adoptive homes without other dogs or with only one dog who completely ignores her. IDEAL HOME FOR SADIE- Sadie is used to going out every few hours or she will potty indoors. Someone home part of the day or a licensed dog walker is necessary to avoid accidents daily. Sadie is used to accessing a secured yard for potty breaks. LINK to Sadie's Application- https://fs8.formsite.com/Caringhearts/form10/index.html
