Siberian Husky

A.K.A. : Chukcha, Chuksha
Overview: The Siberian Husky is very similar in looks to the Alaskan Malamute, yet somewhat smaller in build and not quite as bold. Still, he needs a strong-willed owner who will stay in control. This dog loves to roam and explore, so he needs a nice big yard.
Breed Group: Working
Weight (lbs): male: 45-60, female: 35-50
Height (in): male: 21-23.5, female: 20-22
Colors: All colors from black to pure white.
Coat: Coat is double-layered and medium-length. The guard hairs of the outer coat are straight and somewhat smooth lying. The undercoat is soft and dense and of sufficient length.
Character: Siberian Huskies are not particularly good watch dogs, because they want to befriend everyone they meet. They love to roam and are full of energy and independence.
Temperament: This breed gets along well with other Huskies, but they need to be trained carefully if they're to be kept with other household pets. They will not get along with cats or other small animals, though they do well with children.
Care: Its coat needs brushing one or two times a week, daily during periods of heaviest shedding.
Training: This breed is very intelligent and independent. Handlers should take this into consideration and use patience and understanding during training.
Activity: The Siberian Husky needs to be involved in physical activities and requires a well-fenced yard. If they are not kept active, they can be very destructive and noisy.
Country of Origin: Russia
Health Issue: This breed is relatively healthy, but some have heart disease and eye problems, along with dermatitis.
Life Expectancy: 11-13

More About Siberian Husky Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Blue eyes Red-White fur coat Possibly good with dogs and cats Good with kids over 10 years old Normal energy level Adoption Application - Go to www.huskyrescue.org n families..... we tend to keep the Crystal. It is considered special - a family heirloom, has history, and is passed down for others to cherish and appreciate. It may be rough around the edges- but it's beauty and shine..... always surpasses time. Crystal is almost priceless. This special girl, was quite like that. She was owned by a breeder in Iowa for nine years. A treasure. She is AKC registered, bred over and over, producing some champions for him.. But when her owner was done with her..... he just took her to an auction and if he did not get any money for her - she would simply be killed. After a long day, at the auction in Missouri - no one had bid on sweet Crystal. Someone stepped-up and offered to save her life...... and contacted a volunteer of FSSR. Sweet girl was saved by a stranger- just so that she would not die! We are blessed to have been able to help her. Crystal is a very good girl. Crate-trained, potty-trained, walks great on the leash, and likes the company of other dogs She is as bright as the sun shinning though a clean window.... but a little rough around those edges- that were cut, just as you might think. She has never really experienced LOVE. She loves people, likes to be rubbed and touched, and knows what squeaky toys are all about. She just needs someone to SHOW her how a dog should be loved, hugged, and cherished...... to "Sparkle" again. This dog, gave half of her life..... to a human that was using her. And then tossed her out like rubbish. We think that's just garbage! Crystal is a very special dog that has waited a very long time to LOVE someone and BE loved. What an amazing thing that will be!!!! She wants to show you. More than a piece of glass to pass on to family......This Crystal will be a beautiful story of love, to share.......forever and ever. Crystal can be cat- tested upon request. Brown eyes Brown-Black fur coat Possibly good with dogs and cats Good with kids over 10 years old Normal energy level Adoption Application - Go to www.huskyrescue.org Sometimes inner strength, hope, and a desire to Believe..... Are the only things that separate one rescue dog's attitude from another - while they wait. Some can be saddened, after a while and some can even seem defeated. Herbie has been at FSSR for 5 years, now. Waiting. But he chooses to Believe. He LOVES to be outside! And, while he runs under the bright shine of sun - playing with toys, flipping them in the air, and jumping up , like gravity does not exist to get them...... or while he dreams of it at night - He feels warm, happy, and Strong. He LOVES the pool! And while he is in it - spinning, dunking, and splashing.....or while he dreams of it at night - His Hope floats. He LOVES to investigate all things new and to explore! To smell the fresh green grass....... or to just pee - on each and every tree. (He always dreams of THAT at night). Herbie has always been shy- but he LOVES the comfort, kisses, and gentle touches from the volunteers he has come to know, trust, and depend on. The JOY......of seeing one of his favorite people - is so incredibly special! If he knows you.....he will run to you, jump up and wrap his paws around you, and give you a hug (that stands still). He looks into your eyes...... and tells you, "I still Believe.". Free Spirit Siberian Rescue is looking for a very special person to BELIEVE...... in Herbie. He dreams of you at night.
