Siberian Husky

A.K.A. : Chukcha, Chuksha
Overview: The Siberian Husky is very similar in looks to the Alaskan Malamute, yet somewhat smaller in build and not quite as bold. Still, he needs a strong-willed owner who will stay in control. This dog loves to roam and explore, so he needs a nice big yard.
Breed Group: Working
Weight (lbs): male: 45-60, female: 35-50
Height (in): male: 21-23.5, female: 20-22
Colors: All colors from black to pure white.
Coat: Coat is double-layered and medium-length. The guard hairs of the outer coat are straight and somewhat smooth lying. The undercoat is soft and dense and of sufficient length.
Character: Siberian Huskies are not particularly good watch dogs, because they want to befriend everyone they meet. They love to roam and are full of energy and independence.
Temperament: This breed gets along well with other Huskies, but they need to be trained carefully if they're to be kept with other household pets. They will not get along with cats or other small animals, though they do well with children.
Care: Its coat needs brushing one or two times a week, daily during periods of heaviest shedding.
Training: This breed is very intelligent and independent. Handlers should take this into consideration and use patience and understanding during training.
Activity: The Siberian Husky needs to be involved in physical activities and requires a well-fenced yard. If they are not kept active, they can be very destructive and noisy.
Country of Origin: Russia
Health Issue: This breed is relatively healthy, but some have heart disease and eye problems, along with dermatitis.
Life Expectancy: 11-13

More About Siberian Husky Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). www.TheLastResortRescue.com PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING THIS PET THE FIRST STEP IS TO FILL OUT OUR ADOPTION APPLICATION AVAILABLE AT THELASTRESORTRESCUE.COM. If you have a question or inquiry please email us at tlrapplications@gmail.com Oh Aubrey, where to begin, is there anything we haven't been through together?! This super beauty is Aubrey! She is a 3 year old German Shepherd who we nursed back to health. Aubrey is now completely healthy and in search of her perfect home. Aubrey is crate trained & housebroken, but doesn't know how to potty on a leash so a fenced yard would be a big benefit to anyone wanting to adopt. True to the breed, Aubrey will bond strongly with ONE people and wants to be the sole focus of someone’s affection. Aubrey’s ideal home is one where she won’t have to share attention with other dogs or young children. We have observed Aubrey being scared of men and even nipping at them if she feels threatened. Aubrey would do great in a home with a single woman and/or a patient man willing to take their time and earn her trust. No small pets please. Aubrey is in boarding in NC but can be transported to an approved adopter in MD or NJ. Fostering with the intent to adopt is an option in this case. She is spayed and up to date on her shots. The Last Resort is a foster based rescue. Our dogs are in our foster homes all up and down the east coast. We do not have a facility in which you can visit. We find this a huge benefit because we learn our dogs and are able to educate our adopters on what it’s like to have them live in your home. Part of our process, once pre-approved, is to speak with the foster for the dog you’re interested in. If you’re still interested in adopting from our rescue the first step is to complete our adoption application online at www.thelastresortrescue.com/adoptionapplication.htm Adoption Application http://www.thelastresortrescue.com/adoptionapplication.htm

If you have a question or inquiry please email us at tlrapplications@gmail.com Meet this handsome boy, Sarge. He's 2 to 3 years old. The Last Resort took Sarge in because he would escape from his home in NC and come to play with one of our fosters. His owners would eventually come pick Sarge up. Then one day they stopped coming and moved away. Their loss is our gain...can you say HUBBA, HUBBA, HUBBA??? Sarge is dog friendly and boy is he a player. Sarge needs a home with other young, playful dogs to be his friends or someone who will take him to a dog park regularly. True to the breed, Sarge is not cat friendly. He would do great with older children in the home. He is very vocal and loves to sing to you so no apartments or condos please, and he definitely needs a fenced in backyard that is secure or someone willing to exercise him on lead a lot. He is crate trained, housebroken and very food motivated. Sarge is the independent type. He can be your typical stubborn husky at times, so we are requiring an experienced adopter that is familiar with this breed or someone who has done ample research ((this is a must)). Sarge is neutered and up to date on his shots. Sarge is in a foster home in NC and can be transported to either NJ or MD for an approved adopter. Who doesn't need this type of handsome in their life? Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). www.TheLastResortRescue.com PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING THIS PET THE FIRST STEP IS TO FILL OUT OUR ADOPTION APPLICATION AVAILABLE AT THELASTRESORTRESCUE.COM. If you have a question or inquiry please email us at tlrapplications@gmail.com Meet Lucky! Lucky is a super special boy and he was given a very appropriate name. Lucky was just about to be put to sleep at a high kill shelter in GA and the Last Resort saved his life in the nick of time. It’s a good thing because he has such a gentle spirit and is so sweet. His foster mom says: "if there is just one word I can use to describe Lucky, it's Loyal - Lucky just wants to follow me around all day and be included in activities and get some loving from time to time." The vet said he believes Lucky is about 5 years old, but he could reasonably be anywhere between 5-7. He is a 65 lb Shepherd mix. We are hoping there will be a special soul out there that will want to bring Lucky into their home. Sadly, we can tell he has been abused in the past. He still cringes a bit with quick hand movements but he is improving. Unfortunately, Lucky has developed seizures and is currently being treated with Penobarbital. We have been able to get his medication adjusted to just where it needs to be and hopefully he will continue to have very few seizures. It is not unusual for him to experience a seizure about once a month though. He is on a mix of both phenobarbital and potassium bromide and seems to be doing well on this. Lucky truly loves everyone and everything – he is great with other dogs and just loves being around them. He is super with people also and has really come out of his shell, although he is still a very easy going dog. He really just wants someone to be his companion and he is really very calm and pleasant to be around. Lucky is very food motivated and knows to sit and beg for food. If you watch his video you will see that he sits up like a statue to beg for treats. It's really cute! Lucky is a gentle soul without a mean bone in his body. He does pretty well in his crate – he whines at first but then quiets down nicely. Hopefully whoever adopts him will be around a good deal and won’t have to crate him. Lucky stays out of his crate overnight and just lays right next to the bed on the floor. Lucky very rarely has an accident in the home, however because of his medication, he does need to go out fairly frequently. We would like for Lucky to be adopted by someone with a fenced in yard as he does occasionally enjoy a good roll in the grass on a nice sunny day. Also - Lucky can not be left alone all day if someone works full time - it just won't work for him. He loves a tennis ball and carrying around his stuffed bear. He does very well on a leash also, although Lucky will have no interest in being a majorly active dog. He just wants to cuddle on the couch with you! Lucky is neutered and current on vaccines. Lucky is currently in foster care in GA and will be transported to MD or NJ for an approved adopter. Please give him a chance. He just wants someone to love him and make him a part of their family forever. Update 7/16/17 - We know that Lucky will require a special adopter, due to his seizure history. However, we are just shocked that no one has come forward and adopted this awesome, gentle boy. He's been is his foster home over 1 year now. When is it going to be HIS chance to find his forever home? He really deserves it. ~~~~The Last Resort is a foster based rescue. Our dogs are in our foster homes all up and down the east coast. Posted Breed: Husky / Siberian Husky (long coat). www.TheLastResortRescue.com PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING THIS PET THE FIRST STEP IS TO FILL OUT OUR ADOPTION APPLICATION AVAILABLE AT THELASTRESORTRESCUE.COM. If you have a question or inquiry please email us at tlrapplications@gmail.com Meet this handsome, bi-eyed/parti-eyed, expressive Sibe – TONKA! We saved Tonka from a high kill shelter in NC and he is currently being fostered in NC. Tonka arrived to the shelter as a stray and his owners did not come for him. Tonka loves both men & women and would do well as a side kick to any active person. Tonka is NOT cat friendly but gets along fine with other dogs. He would prefer to be the center of attention. We would like to see him go to someone who has experience with working breeds or has done ample research and understands and can anticipate the stereotypical Husky. No young kids please. Tonka’s smile is as ornery as it is genuine and he’d love a home that would embrace his personality. He’s a big boy weighing almost 70lbs but does well on a leash. Tonka is 4 years old, neutered, current on vaccines and heartworm negative and in search of his forever home. Tonka can be transported from NC to either MD or NJ but anyone applying to adopt him must be willing to pick up in one of those 3 states, if application is approved. Updated bio on Tonka 6/14/17 from foster mom: "Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist" If this saying is not fitting for Tonka, I do not know what is. Tonka has had his issues since coming to me, but my gosh, you wouldn't know he was the same dog anymore. He is experiencing life in a house with love & structure for probably what is the first time in his life. When you think of Tonka, think of a puppy.... He loves learning new rules & boundaries, but equally loves breaking them just as much Tonka is between 2 to 3 years old, neutered, UTD on all vaccines, hw negative & has been kept current on nexgard & heartgard plus! Tonka does have seizures, & is on medication for them to keep them under control, so this is a must to be kept up on with whatever home he goes to. He is fully crate trained, & is housebroken. He does not destroy things, & is now very confident & comfortable when left alone. Loud noises do not scare Tonka like they do most dogs, however I always use caution. No small animals, no cats, & I would have to say only older children who know how to act appropriately around dogs. He is not a dog that will like a child crawling all over him. He has come so far With his leash manners since his arrival, he walks amazing with his Martingale collar & easy walk Harness on. He could go to a home with or without a securely fenced in backyard, so long as whoever adopts him is active & takes him on walks Regularly Tonka is loaded with lots of personality & funny faces that will make you laugh to go with it. He really has become an amazing companion & just needs the right owner to compliment him. Adoption Application http://www.thelastresortrescue.com/adoptionapplication.htm

If you have a question or inquiry please email us at tlrapplications@gmail.com Meet our very sweet boy, Keanu! Keanu is an estimated year old Shepard mix puppy that came to us from a small SC kill shelter. He is very friendly, very goofy & very clumsy- a typical fun puppy! He is crate trained & has had no accidents in the house, but isn’t left alone for long periods of time. He loves to get out & run/play with all the other dogs & absolutely loves water (his favorite is attacking the hose while his foster Mom is trying to water flowers). He needs a little work still with his manners but he's come a long ways in a very short time of being with TLR. He will most definitely need someone that understands the Shep breed and who has a securely fenced yard. Keanu is looking for a low key household without young children and hustle & bustle. He will not do well living in the city of apartment - only suburb living for this guy. Keanu is neutered and up to date on his vaccines. He is in a foster home in NC and can be transported to NJ or MD for an approved adopter. Adoption Application http://www.thelastresortrescue.com/adoptionapplication.htm

If you have a question or inquiry please email us at tlrapplications@gmail.com Update from foster mom 3/25/14 Buddy is a 12 year old Shih Tzu/Maltese mix, and is about 17 lbs. He's being tested for allergies right now, We are currently waiting on his test results. He's had a rough life. I found him wandering a local highway in the freezing rain, filthy dirty, shivering, and crying. He was flea infested, had hardly any hair on his bottom half. He was suffering from flea bite allergy and had scabs, and open sores. He was extremely itchy and would cry because it hurt so much. He was hesitant at first but it took very little coaxing before he came to me. I wrapped him in a blanket and as soon as we were in my car he kissed my face. He sat on my lap all the way home. This poor guy has 3 herniated disks, 3 BB gun pellets (he was shot), a tail that was traumatized somehow, some weakness in his hind legs (caused by the disks), a bluish haze over his eyes which the vet says is comparable to humans needing reading glasses, and plenty of bumps and lumps (which the vet believes is of no concern.) He needs a loving home where someone is willing to give him the life he deserves. He's super sweet, but like his nickname, can be a grumpy old man. He's got the funniest personality! He makes all sorts of funny sounds when he's playing, and his nose works for sure! We call it his super sniffer! He's a great cuddler, loves walks, toys, and treats. He does well during bath time, and he's well behaved in the car. He does well at the vet, and the groomer too. He's excellent in the house, no accidents. Also, he doesn't need a crate, he's very good! He doesn't get into anything or chew stuff up. He sleeps with us too! (Watch out, he snores!) He's completely spoiled. We love him and know that whomever adopts this little guy will love him too! He's great with woman, a bit slow to warm up to men, but he does come around. Kids are ok as long as there is no rough housing. It seems to make him nervous. He's not a fan of lots of action (like running) he's a quiet peaceful kinda guy. Buddy and Maya (my dog) get along ok. They don't play together very often, mostly they just co-exist. Sometimes they lay in my bed together, or next to each other on the floor. He doesn't like when she sniffs at him, mostly because of his tender tail. He has attached himself to me pretty good. If anyone playfully hits me, or anything like that, he will bark and growl. He also growls at Maya if he is laying in my lap and she comes over to visit, but, if she's by me before him it's not a problem. I know that's a lot to consider when thinking about adopting a dog, but honestly, he has given me more then I could ever give him. He's just a joy to have. Please think about how a senior dog might fit into your life, and if you are interested, please fill out an adoption application at http://thelastresortrescue.com/ He's truly worth it. Hi, my name is Buddy. They tell me I'm a Shih Tzu, possibly mixed with Maltese. I love to lay on my foster moms lap, snuggle on my comfy bed, and go for walks! From what I heard, I do pretty well on a leash. Also, I'm fully house trained. I've been with my foster family for 3 days and haven't had one accident. I'm a very good boy! I'm not too interested in toys, but boy do I love my treats! I also like car rides, and kisses! And although I don't fidget too much in the tub, bath time is not my favorite. My foster mom says that I'm going to make a special family very happy. Will it be you? Keep watching, she also says she'll be sending updates on my progress! If you have a question or inquiry please email us at tlrapplications@gmail.com Meet Lex and Luther! They are perhaps a cattle dog / border collie / heeler mix? We really don't know, just a best guess! Anyway, they were rescued from living under an abandoned house in GA after their "owner" moved away and left them and their momma, Lucy there! They were born approximately April 11th, 2015, They are very sweet and good with other dogs! They and their momma will be arriving to NJ on 6/14/15. Update from foster mom 06/17/15 Sweet times 3! Momma Lucy has a very sweet disposition, it’s like she has been with us for years! She easily warmed up to us. Lex – the smaller of the 2 pups, is a ball of fire, he feels he needs to defend himself from his stocky brother Luther. Both are absolutely adorable! Anyone who adopts any of the 3 will be extremely lucky! We have fostered 3 other dogs in the past & I must admit these 3 by far are the best!!!! Update from foster mom 06/30/15 "LUTHER" This cutie is ready for his new come! Another great name would be MJ (Michael Jackson) because his paws look like Michael's gloves without the glitz. He loves to play outside, yet cuddles on the couch too! He was a little skiddish when he arrived to his foster home, but is coming around. Give this Little Guy the chance to grow up in a loving home Update from foster mom 10/21/15 LUTHER – this 6 ½ month old pup is looking for a new foster or forever home. He is quite the cutie. Fully housebroken, neutered and crate trained. He loves to play, cuddle & give kisses. He needs a little more training with cats that is why he needs a new foster….the weather is getting cold and it’s time for the foster’s cats to come in for the Winter months. He gets along terrifically with other dogs and loves to go for walks. Weighing about 25 pounds he is not a big dog. He is a mix (Mother was a Blue Heeler/Aust. Cattle Dog, father unknown) although he looks like he could be part Labrador. Open your arms to this absolutely loving pup! Luther is now a year old as of 4/21/16. Update from foster mom Luther is 1 yr old Australian Cattle Dog mix. He is truly a great buddy. He loves cuddling. He is crate trained as well as housebroken. He is ok with cats and small dogs but not very fond of larger dogs. Adoption Application http://www.thelastresortrescue.com/adoptionapplication.htm

Roscoe is a husky that was surrendered by his owner who did not have time for him. It is very sad, but Roscoe spent his whole life on a chain. He did occasionally have a walk every now and then but then it got to the point where he was on the chain 24/7. He is approximately 5 yrs old, fully vetted and heartworm negative. He has been in his foster home about 8 months now and is learning so much. He is learning how to play with other dogs and just how to run free (in his fenced yard of course!). He is good with other dogs and enjoy playing and loves people. He also loves hugs. His foster parents are working on his house training. He is good on a leash. At first he did not want to have a leash on him as he thought he was going back on the chain but now is fine with one. It just took him some time to get to know that he is truly loved now. We're going to make sure whoever adopts him will spoil him rotten all the days that remain for him. Roscoe is in foster in NC and can be transported to MD or NJ for an approved adopter. She is a special girl born on 8/14/10 looking for her forever home. She bonds very well with one person female perferred and gets a bit scared when quick movements come her way. So she is looking for a quiet home with a loving person who she will adore to lay next to her. She is crate trained and housebroken and enjoys playing with her feline family. She has also done well with other dogs in the home. So if your looking to open your heart to a little girl who will make you her world you should adopt Molly. Kamali AKA Molly was sadly returned to us when her owner no longer could keep her because of a change in her living arrangements. She was adopted at just 12 weeks of age. She was born 8/14/10. She is very shy and timid. But has only been with me for a couple of days. I am hoping she will settle down once she learns she can trust us. She is doing great with my kids even the youngest who is only 6. She is crate trained and doing well with house breaking. She gets along well with other small dogs. I have two other Chihuahua's and a Pom. She loves to go out for walks and run in the back yard. She has lots of energy and would be a great addition to an active family. She may be little but she is mighty:) Adoption Application http://www.thelastresortrescue.com/adoptionapplication.htm

Update from foster mom 06/30/15 "LEX" is a spunky little fellow, small but fierce! He is searching for his "forever" home. Not sure his mix, but reminds me of a minature dobie/australian cattle dog (his mommy was Australian Cattle Dog). A little lover, has quite the personality, makes cute grunting noise when he is HAPPY to see you. He is also housebroken! Lex will be a year old (April 2016) Adoption Application http://www.thelastresortrescue.com/adoptionapplication.htm
