Siberian Husky

A.K.A. : Chukcha, Chuksha
Overview: The Siberian Husky is very similar in looks to the Alaskan Malamute, yet somewhat smaller in build and not quite as bold. Still, he needs a strong-willed owner who will stay in control. This dog loves to roam and explore, so he needs a nice big yard.
Breed Group: Working
Weight (lbs): male: 45-60, female: 35-50
Height (in): male: 21-23.5, female: 20-22
Colors: All colors from black to pure white.
Coat: Coat is double-layered and medium-length. The guard hairs of the outer coat are straight and somewhat smooth lying. The undercoat is soft and dense and of sufficient length.
Character: Siberian Huskies are not particularly good watch dogs, because they want to befriend everyone they meet. They love to roam and are full of energy and independence.
Temperament: This breed gets along well with other Huskies, but they need to be trained carefully if they're to be kept with other household pets. They will not get along with cats or other small animals, though they do well with children.
Care: Its coat needs brushing one or two times a week, daily during periods of heaviest shedding.
Training: This breed is very intelligent and independent. Handlers should take this into consideration and use patience and understanding during training.
Activity: The Siberian Husky needs to be involved in physical activities and requires a well-fenced yard. If they are not kept active, they can be very destructive and noisy.
Country of Origin: Russia
Health Issue: This breed is relatively healthy, but some have heart disease and eye problems, along with dermatitis.
Life Expectancy: 11-13

More About Siberian Husky Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Siberian Husky / Pointer / Mixed (short coat). www.TheLastResortRescue.com PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING THIS PET THE FIRST STEP IS TO FILL OUT OUR ADOPTION APPLICATION AVAILABLE AT THELASTRESORTRESCUE.COM. If you have a question or inquiry please email us at tlrapplications@gmail.com Azula caught our eye with her stunning blue eyes. She was in a kill shelter in Fayetteville, NC. We thought for sure someone would adopt her. She’s a unique beauty. Her stray hold came and went and no one came for her. She waited and watched as folks toured the adoption floor, but no one picked her. She overheard someone say ‘her time is almost up’, and she became defeated. Azula hung her head in disbelief and awaited the fate she knew would come. But instead, a gentle hand from TLR reached out to her and she couldn’t believe how good it felt to feel love. Azula is now in her foster home in NC and is opening up and showing us her personality. It took a few days but she finally gave her foster Mom a smile. Azula is 3-4 years old and approximately 55 lbs. We believe she’s a Husky/Aussie/Pointer mix, or something of the nature. While her beauty is just stunning she most likely had mange at a young age, a ‘tail’ told by the pock marks on her face. Also, she is heartworm positive. We have begun treating Azula and will continue to do so and pay for all treatment until she’s negative, even if she’s adopted prior. She's potty trained, crate trained and very low key. Azula really likes being able to lay on the couch. She can be shy with newcomers so dog savvy kids only. Azula would do best in a home with no other pets. It takes a while for her to open up and then when she does she longs for your attention. Update from foster home: Azula, who was our cherished The Last Resort save, has made tremendous progress. She's still on the thin side and gets a variety of food. Azula now has a constant tail wag & comes running right up to her foster mom❤ She's still searching for that perfect home, preferably with someone who has a lot of time to devote to her. Azula is current on her vaccines and spayed. She can be transported to MD or NJ for an approved adopter. Can you give Azula the forever love she needs? If you have a question or inquiry please email us at tlrapplications@gmail.com Meet Ellie Mae! She is a husky mix rescued from a kill shelter in NC. She was as owner surrender who was given up because she was too active for the older couple that had adopted her. She is fully vetted and about 2 yrs old. She is heartworm negative and weighs about 39 lbs so she is pretty small for a husky mixed type. She's just a beautiful as a purebred though! She is house trained but does not like to be crated for long periods of time (that's understandable!). She is great with other dogs and would do best in a home with another dog and fenced in yard to play in. She can jump really high...almost over her foster moms head! When she first arrived there, she would jump up and down and has actually never tried to jump the fence but we still feel a tall, secure fence would be safest for her. She also loves hugs! She is in a foster home with Demon if you are possibly thinking you might like to adopt 2 dogs. Ellie Mae is in foster in NC and can be transported to MD or NJ for an approved adopter. Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). www.TheLastResortRescue.com PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING THIS PET THE FIRST STEP IS TO FILL OUT OUR ADOPTION APPLICATION AVAILABLE AT THELASTRESORTRESCUE.COM. If you have a question or inquiry please email us at tlrapplications@gmail.com Meet Lucky! Lucky is a super special boy and he was given a very appropriate name. Lucky was just about to be put to sleep at a high kill shelter in GA and the Last Resort saved his life in the nick of time. It’s a good thing because he has such a gentle spirit and is so sweet. His foster mom says: "if there is just one word I can use to describe Lucky, it's Loyal - Lucky just wants to follow me around all day and be included in activities and get some loving from time to time." The vet said he believes Lucky is about 4 years old, but he could reasonably be anywhere between 4-6. He is a 60 lb Shepherd mix. We are hoping there will be a special soul out there that will want to bring Lucky into their home. We think Lucky was probably an outdoor only dog in his previous life and at times we can tell he has been abused in the past. It is a real shame his previous owners didn’t love him enough to give him his monthly Heartworm prevention so sadly, Lucky is Heartworm positive. That’s really not a big deal though as we will treat him until he becomes negative, at the cost of the rescue. Unfortunately, Lucky has also developed seizures and is currently being treated with Penobarbital. We have been able to get his medication adjusted to just where it needs to be and hopefully he will continue to have very few seizures. It is not unusual for him to experience a seizure about once a month though. Lucky loves everyone and everything – he is great with other dogs and just loves being around them. He is super with people also and has really come out of his shell, although he is still a very easy going dog. He really just wants someone to be his companion and he is really very calm and pleasant to be around. Lucky is very food motivated and knows to sit and beg for food. If you watch his video you will see that he sits up like a statue to beg for treats. It's really cute! Lucky is a gentle soul without a mean bone in his body. He does pretty well in his crate – he whines at first but then quiets down nicely. Hopefully whoever adopts him will be around a good deal and won’t have to crate him. Lucky stays out of his crate overnight and just lays right next to the bed on the floor. Lucky very rarely has an accident in the home, however because of his medication, he does need to go out fairly frequently. We would like for Lucky to be adopted by someone with a fenced in yard as he does occasionally enjoy a good roll in the grass on a nice sunny day. Also - Lucky can not be left alone all day if someone works full time - it just won't work for him. He loves a tennis ball and carrying around his stuffed bear. He does very well on a leash also, although Lucy will have no interest in being a majorly active dog. He just wants to cuddle on the couch with you! Lucky is neutered and current on vaccines. Lucky is currently in foster care in GA and will be transported to MD or NJ for an approved adopter. Please give him a chance. He just wants someone to love him and make him a part of their family forever. Adoption Application http://www.thelastresortrescue.com/adoptionapplication.htm

Posted Breed: Shepherd / Siberian Husky / Mixed (short coat). www.TheLastResortRescue.com PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING THIS PET THE FIRST STEP IS TO FILL OUT OUR ADOPTION APPLICATION AVAILABLE AT THELASTRESORTRESCUE.COM. If you have a question or inquiry please email us at tlrapplications@gmail.com Welcome to TLR MD Daisy! Daisy comes to us from a very rural, high kill area of Georgia. Daisy is a little shy of new people and isn’t a bundle of energy so she was pushed out of the way by the other dogs at the kennel until she made the urgent list. Then one of our wonderful volunteers opened their home to save Daisy’s life and she’s now adjusting to a better way of life here in MD. She was a little unsure when she first arrived and paced trying to figure out what was going on and why was she here? But we knew she’d soon figure it out when her tail started to wag. Daisy is a 3 year old Shepherd mix. She is spayed and current on her vaccines. She is heartworm positive and we’ve begun treating her through the slow kill method. The rescue will provide all medication and related care until she’s heartworm negative. We are just starting to get to know Daisy and will post an update soon but so far we know she’s indifferent to cats and dogs and gets along with everyone. She is crate trained and house trained and very mellow. Foster Update 5/1/16: She's doing well. She is amazingly good with the cats and the kids. She is still a little skittish, and doesn't like to be petted much, but she is definitely better than she used to be with that. She still paces, but it doesn't seem nearly as frantic as it used to. She much prefers to be outside than in, and I do have trouble getting her back in the house sometimes. She only barks when she is hungry, LOL. In fact she could be my new alarm clock, because she barks at 6 AM every morning. But she is gradually becoming more receptive to affection, especially if you pet her on the body and not the head. She likes to chew on bully strips, and destroys them relatively quickly, but has not been destructive to any of the furniture in the house. She did rip apart her pillow, but that's OK because she seems to prefer to lay on a hard surface. She totally ignores the dog bed. She really is a great dog! Haven't tried to play fetch with her, but we do take walks periodically and she is getting better on the leash she doesn't pull, it's actually the opposite problem. She lags behind and has to be tugged to get moving a lot. But like I said, gradual improvement. She's been friendly towards other dogs, and interacts with the dogs in my neighbors yard through the fence a lot. One of the two next-door likes to bark at her, but she doesn't bark back. She has a very low tail wag, which at first I thought was a sign that she was scared, but I think now that that's just how her tail is. I've never seen it up more than halfway. Update on Daisy, June 26, 2016: Daisy has calmed down a great deal in the past two months. She greets us with a wagging tail every morning and whenever we return from being out. We no longer crate her when we are not home, and she has not been destructive at all. She also no longer sleeps in the crate, preferring a spot on the carpet, completely ignoring the dog bed as well. She is very well house trained, not having had any accidents in the house; the longest span she has been home alone is probably about 8 hours. She is not a barker with the exception of when she really needs to go outside. In fact, she prefers to be outside, regardless of the weather. She has not shown any inclination to leave our yard, which has a four-foot fence. She still paces a little, usually when she first goes outside after having been inside for a while, but not nearly as much as she initially did. She is still not interested in traditional play – chasing balls and the like – but has become much more affectionate, coming up to us to be petted when we are sitting around. She has started following me around the house when I first come home from being out, and laying down next to me when I work on the computer at night. She continues to get along well with both the children and the cats, and has interacted well with other dogs in supervised situations. She has not had the opportunity to interact with other dogs in the same yard off leash, but her on-leash and through-the-fence interactions lead me to believe she would do well with other dogs in general. All in all, she has been a wonderful foster so far, and I think she’ll make a wonderful pet for a family looking for a relatively calm dog! If you have a question or inquiry please email us at tlrapplications@gmail.com Update from foster mom 3/25/14 Buddy is a 12 year old Shih Tzu/Maltese mix, and is about 17 lbs. He's being tested for allergies right now, We are currently waiting on his test results. He's had a rough life. I found him wandering a local highway in the freezing rain, filthy dirty, shivering, and crying. He was flea infested, had hardly any hair on his bottom half. He was suffering from flea bite allergy and had scabs, and open sores. He was extremely itchy and would cry because it hurt so much. He was hesitant at first but it took very little coaxing before he came to me. I wrapped him in a blanket and as soon as we were in my car he kissed my face. He sat on my lap all the way home. This poor guy has 3 herniated disks, 3 BB gun pellets (he was shot), a tail that was traumatized somehow, some weakness in his hind legs (caused by the disks), a bluish haze over his eyes which the vet says is comparable to humans needing reading glasses, and plenty of bumps and lumps (which the vet believes is of no concern.) He needs a loving home where someone is willing to give him the life he deserves. He's super sweet, but like his nickname, can be a grumpy old man. He's got the funniest personality! He makes all sorts of funny sounds when he's playing, and his nose works for sure! We call it his super sniffer! He's a great cuddler, loves walks, toys, and treats. He does well during bath time, and he's well behaved in the car. He does well at the vet, and the groomer too. He's excellent in the house, no accidents. Also, he doesn't need a crate, he's very good! He doesn't get into anything or chew stuff up. He sleeps with us too! (Watch out, he snores!) He's completely spoiled. We love him and know that whomever adopts this little guy will love him too! He's great with woman, a bit slow to warm up to men, but he does come around. Kids are ok as long as there is no rough housing. It seems to make him nervous. He's not a fan of lots of action (like running) he's a quiet peaceful kinda guy. Buddy and Maya (my dog) get along ok. They don't play together very often, mostly they just co-exist. Sometimes they lay in my bed together, or next to each other on the floor. He doesn't like when she sniffs at him, mostly because of his tender tail. He has attached himself to me pretty good. If anyone playfully hits me, or anything like that, he will bark and growl. He also growls at Maya if he is laying in my lap and she comes over to visit, but, if she's by me before him it's not a problem. I know that's a lot to consider when thinking about adopting a dog, but honestly, he has given me more then I could ever give him. He's just a joy to have. Please think about how a senior dog might fit into your life, and if you are interested, please fill out an adoption application at http://thelastresortrescue.com/ He's truly worth it. Hi, my name is Buddy. They tell me I'm a Shih Tzu, possibly mixed with Maltese. I love to lay on my foster moms lap, snuggle on my comfy bed, and go for walks! From what I heard, I do pretty well on a leash. Also, I'm fully house trained. I've been with my foster family for 3 days and haven't had one accident. I'm a very good boy! I'm not too interested in toys, but boy do I love my treats! I also like car rides, and kisses! And although I don't fidget too much in the tub, bath time is not my favorite. My foster mom says that I'm going to make a special family very happy. Will it be you? Keep watching, she also says she'll be sending updates on my progress! If you have a question or inquiry please email us at tlrapplications@gmail.com Meet Coco, our resident princess. Coco was rescued from a high-kill shelter in Georgia hours before she was to be euthanized. Although we do not have any information about her background, it's seems that Coco's early years did not allow her the joys and comforts of being a family pet, but you would never know it from her demeanor. One look at those soulful eyes and she will win you over! Coco is sweet and generally easy going. She is fully house trained, has good house manners (no jumping or begging at the table, no jumping on furniture) and is great with kids. She's a real nanny dog! Coco loves to play with toys and bones and has good recall. She knows a few basic commands, as well. Although she's not petite, she is gentle. Coco is smart and catches on quickly. She will fit in well with most environments and would be fine with kids or laid-back non-territorial adult dogs. She doesn't need tons of room, either, since she's mellow, and does well in a fenced-in yard or on a leash. When she came to us, Coco was underweight but is now at a good healthy weight and is totally thriving. Coco is fully up to date on vaccines and spayed. Coco has some lumps on her body, which are benign skin tumors. These are not cancer, require no treatment and they do not hurt her. They are very common in labs as they get older. Her teeth are in good shape, so she may be younger than estimated. Coco has so much to give and her happiness is infectious. We hope you’ll allow her sunshine to fill your days with joy. Update from foster on 7/22/16: I wanted to send you an update on how Coco is doing. She's a great girl and has adjusted so well to our home. She absolutely adores the kids - she actually sits at the door and cries when they leave. And nothing makes her happier than when they return (although peanut butter and playing with her toys are close seconds). She is a perfect family dog - fully housetrained, very friendly and not at all destructive. As much as we love having her with us, I hope she will be able to find her forever home soon! We really don't know, just a best guess! Anyway, they were rescued from living under an abandoned house in GA after their "owner" moved away and left them and their momma, Lucy there! They were born approximately April 11th, 2015, They are very sweet and good with other dogs! They and their momma will be arriving to NJ on 6/14/15. Update from foster mom 06/17/15 Sweet times 3! Momma Lucy has a very sweet disposition, it’s like she has been with us for years! She easily warmed up to us. Lex – the smaller of the 2 pups, is a ball of fire, he feels he needs to defend himself from his stocky brother Luther. Both are absolutely adorable! Anyone who adopts any of the 3 will be extremely lucky! We have fostered 3 other dogs in the past & I must admit these 3 by far are the best!!!! Update from foster mom 06/30/15 "LUTHER" This cutie is ready for his new come! Another great name would be MJ (Michael Jackson) because his paws look like Michael's gloves without the glitz. He loves to play outside, yet cuddles on the couch too! He was a little skiddish when he arrived to his foster home, but is coming around. Give this Little Guy the chance to grow up in a loving home Update from foster mom 10/21/15 LUTHER – this 6 ½ month old pup is looking for a new foster or forever home. He is quite the cutie. Fully housebroken, neutered and crate trained. He loves to play, cuddle & give kisses. He needs a little more training with cats that is why he needs a new foster….the weather is getting cold and it’s time for the foster’s cats to come in for the Winter months. He gets along terrifically with other dogs and loves to go for walks. Weighing about 25 pounds he is not a big dog. He is a mix (Mother was a Blue Heeler/Aust. Cattle Dog, father unknown) although he looks like he could be part Labrador. Open your arms to this absolutely loving pup! Luther is now a year old as of 4/21/16. Update from foster mom Luther is 1 yr old Australian Cattle Dog mix. He is truly a great buddy. He loves cuddling. He is crate trained as well as housebroken. He is ok with cats and small dogs but not very fond of larger dogs. Adoption Application http://www.thelastresortrescue.com/adoptionapplication.htm

Roscoe is a husky that was surrendered by his owner who did not have time for him. It is very sad, but Roscoe spent his whole life on a chain. He did occasionally have a walk every now and then but then it got to the point where he was on the chain 24/7. He is approximately 5 yrs old, fully vetted and heartworm negative. He has been in his foster home about 8 months now and is learning so much. He is learning how to play with other dogs and just how to run free (in his fenced yard of course!). He is good with other dogs and enjoy playing and loves people. He also loves hugs. His foster parents are working on his house training. He is good on a leash. At first he did not want to have a leash on him as he thought he was going back on the chain but now is fine with one. It just took him some time to get to know that he is truly loved now. We're going to make sure whoever adopts him will spoil him rotten all the days that remain for him. Roscoe is in foster in NC and can be transported to MD or NJ for an approved adopter. If you have a question or inquiry please email us at tlrapplications@gmail.com Update from foster mom 2/7/14 Meet Kamali better known as Molly. She is a special girl born on 8/14/10 looking for her forever home. She bonds very well with one person female perferred and gets a bit scared when quick movements come her way. So she is looking for a quiet home with a loving person who she will adore to lay next to her. She is crate trained and housebroken and enjoys playing with her feline family. She has also done well with other dogs in the home. So if your looking to open your heart to a little girl who will make you her world you should adopt Molly. Kamali AKA Molly was sadly returned to us when her owner no longer could keep her because of a change in her living arrangements. She was adopted at just 12 weeks of age. She was born 8/14/10. She is very shy and timid. But has only been with me for a couple of days. I am hoping she will settle down once she learns she can trust us. She is doing great with my kids even the youngest who is only 6. She is crate trained and doing well with house breaking. She gets along well with other small dogs. I have two other Chihuahua's and a Pom. She loves to go out for walks and run in the back yard. She has lots of energy and would be a great addition to an active family. She may be little but she is mighty:) Adoption Application http://www.thelastresortrescue.com/adoptionapplication.htm

If you have a question or inquiry please email us at tlrapplications@gmail.com Meet Lex and Luther! They are perhaps a cattle dog / border collie / heeler mix? Update from foster mom 06/30/15 "LEX" is a spunky little fellow, small but fierce! He is searching for his "forever" home. Not sure his mix, but reminds me of a minature dobie/australian cattle dog (his mommy was Australian Cattle Dog). A little lover, has quite the personality, makes cute grunting noise when he is HAPPY to see you. He is also housebroken! Lex will be a year old (April 2016) Adoption Application http://www.thelastresortrescue.com/adoptionapplication.htm
