Posted Breed: Siberian Husky / Siberian Husky / Mixed. Zara is a 9 month old Siberian Husky puppy. She has been with us since Early June when she was only 10 weeks old. She was abandoned by a backyard breeder who stated she was the last of the litter and they couldn't sell her. Her little body was flea infested and covered in ticks that made her anemic due to all the loss of blood. We pulled her into emergency rescue, not only did she need lots of TLC but the shelter was very full so they had no space for her. Zara came to us scared and very dirty, it was clear she had been living outside and was not socialized. We gave her 3 baths and picked off a ton of ticks. Then gave her meds to kill off the fleas and ticks that remained. Over the next few days Zara felt much better and started coming out of her shell. Zara had unique markings on her coat. She is considered a piebald husky. This means she has a rare genetic trait that gives her a different pattern on her coat. Many people do not know what a piebald husky is, because it's pretty rare. :-) Because of this we believe she was the leftover puppy not only because of her eye, but because she didn't look like your standard husky. Sadly Zara was born with a glaucoma on her right eye. This means bacteria got inside her little eye before her eyes opened ruining her chance at every seeing out of that eye. Because of this we gave her eye drops until she was old enough for her eye surgery. She had eye surgery in early Aug, and was spayed at the same time. She did wonderful with the surgery, and bounced right back to her normal, husky howling, energetic self the next day. She didn't even let her e-collar cone get in the way. She truly has the best spirit! Since being in foster we have noticed Zara is shy in new places, and around new people. She will back away and observe the situation. Having another dog around who is more outgoing brings out the best in Zara. Becuase of this her new home is required to have another active outgoing dog. Zara is great on leash, crate trained, and house trained. She does need work on resource guarding bones from other dogs. Her resource guarding is not major, and with some work I think this issue will go away. Zara is looking for a home who can give her lots of walks and adventures! She needs a 6ft fenced yard since she is an energetic husky. She will likely grow to be able to jump a 4ft fence. She is cat, and dog friendly. Zara would do better with older respectful kids. Her new family should also be willing to do basic obedience training with her. Zara is a chewer being a puppy and cannot be left alone unless crated. Husky experience is a plus. Zara is spayed, up to date on vaccines, on monthly heartworm/flea tick meds and ready to go home with you! If you have additional questions please email Megan her foster mom at MegansHuskies@gmail.com. If you wish to adopt please fill out an application we will contact you for a meet and greet after your application is processed. Her adoption fee is $225.

Siberian Husky

A.K.A. : Chukcha, Chuksha
Overview: The Siberian Husky is very similar in looks to the Alaskan Malamute, yet somewhat smaller in build and not quite as bold. Still, he needs a strong-willed owner who will stay in control. This dog loves to roam and explore, so he needs a nice big yard.
Breed Group: Working
Weight (lbs): male: 45-60, female: 35-50
Height (in): male: 21-23.5, female: 20-22
Colors: All colors from black to pure white.
Coat: Coat is double-layered and medium-length. The guard hairs of the outer coat are straight and somewhat smooth lying. The undercoat is soft and dense and of sufficient length.
Character: Siberian Huskies are not particularly good watch dogs, because they want to befriend everyone they meet. They love to roam and are full of energy and independence.
Temperament: This breed gets along well with other Huskies, but they need to be trained carefully if they're to be kept with other household pets. They will not get along with cats or other small animals, though they do well with children.
Care: Its coat needs brushing one or two times a week, daily during periods of heaviest shedding.
Training: This breed is very intelligent and independent. Handlers should take this into consideration and use patience and understanding during training.
Activity: The Siberian Husky needs to be involved in physical activities and requires a well-fenced yard. If they are not kept active, they can be very destructive and noisy.
Country of Origin: Russia
Health Issue: This breed is relatively healthy, but some have heart disease and eye problems, along with dermatitis.
Life Expectancy: 11-13

More About Siberian Husky Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Labrador Retriever
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Meet Lazlo! Lazlo is around 1-2 years old and is a fun-loving Labrador retriever mix. Lazlo can be bashful at first, but comes out of his shell quickly! Lazlo was rescued by some good samaritans that took him in when they realized he was chained up to a dog house with no food and water. In spite of his unfortunate past, Lazlo has never stopped wagging his tail! Lazlo is fostered in a home with other dogs, and is great with all of them. We are unsure whether Lazlo is cat friendly, but are able to test if an applicant requests it. Lazlo loves to run and play, and can not be trusted with a bed, because he thinks dog beds are more fun to chew than to lay on... Because he is still a puppy, the lucky family that adopts him will have to keep his mischievous at times behavior in mind! Lazlo is up-to-date on vaccinations, neutered, has been dewormed, and is on his monthly flea/tick and heartworm preventatives. Lazlo's adoption fee is $225. If you would like to adopt Lazlo, please fill out an application using this link: Adoption Application If you have additional questions, please e-mail the Dog Program Manager at laura@secondchancenc.org. Thank you!

      Breed: Labrador Retriever

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Hi! My name is Kota and I am a 3.5 year old lab/pit mix boy. I currently weigh in around 55-60lbs and should be done growing by now. I was rescued from the shelter along with my "sister" after my family left me behind because of moving suddenly. I am very outgoing and love to run in the fenced in yard in my foster home. I am also doggie friendly and a playmate really should be a must for me! Mama found out that I like other dogs, when I broke out of the crate while she was gone and hung out with the resident pooches while waiting for her to come home. Mama didn't realize she gave me the crate with the broken latch and I may have exploited its weakness. :) I also proved that I am quite kitty friendly then too, since there are a few kitties roaming the house. I just did not want to miss out on the fun! If that is something my forever family would like to do when gone, I will go in one, I just need a little bit of a push since it is all still so new to me. Once crated though I am a fairly quiet guy. So far, I have proven to be housebroken though so you may not even need one! I did pull all the pillows off the couch but I promise I didn't chew them up, just drooled on them a little! I walk really well on the leash and would love a family who could take me for walks so I can smell the smells and see the sights while getting some energy out. I do get excited when seeing other dogs on walks though so I need a family who can help me stay focused and doesn't mind that I bark. Also, I should mention that I absolutely ADORE playing fetch! I will retrieve and come back to you without even being told to. But I do wanna keep my reward so a game of tug with the ball is part of the deal. I am so sweet though and the smile on my face when we play in the yard makes a little tug all worth it! I am neutered and microchipped and I am heartworm negative and on heartworm and flea/tick preventions. My adoption fee is $225. To adopt me, please fill out an application using this link: Adoption Application If you have any additional questions for me please email my foster mama at fchsjess@gmail.com and she will tell you all about me.

I'm a young girl, around 1 - 2 years old, and am an awesome weight at around 35-40 pounds. My foster mom says I'm the perfect small-medium size! I am a very playful gal and I love everyone and every dog I meet. I am a little angel with foster mom around, and I only chew on things I should chew on, but if left unattended I can be a little mischevious! Foster mom crates me when she is not around and I don't mind, especially when she leaves me a good, safe chew toy to keep me Busy! I do well in a fenced in yard and just romp around and play with my foster siblings. I do okay walking on leash but still have some manners to learn! I am going to make someone that wants a confident, athletic, and very loving companion the happiest person in the world! Foster mom calls me a shadow dog because I like to be with her wherever she goes! I almost went in the shower with her once but then decided it wasn't worth it lol! My best friend at my foster home is Marge! I would love to be adopted with her or at least to a home with other dogs! I really enjoy the company and since I have a lot of energy it would help out my forever family as well! I have met my foster moms nine year old niece and eleven year old nephew and I just love them to pieces! Kids are fun, especially the older ones that want to play with me and understand that I'm a puppy! I let them lay all over me and I love every second of it! I am up to date on vaccines, microchipped, spayed, and on my monthly flea/tick and heartworm preventatives. I am heartworm negative and have been dewormed! My adoption fee is $225! Location: USA
Posted Breed: Corgi / Chihuahua / Mixed. Meet Lola, a 4 year old corgi/chihuahua mix. She is a unique mixture of breeds which always stimulates conversation. She is 18 pounds of pure lap dog and loves to snuggle. She has a squeaky toy that she carries around with her and she loves to go on walks! She is good on a leash and is mostly potty trained, though her foster mom is still working on this and an adopter will need to be committed to this training as well. For this reason, we do not recommend Lola live in an apartment. Lola has been nose to nose with a cat without much interest and has done well with other dogs, though she may prefer to be the apple of her owners eye since she loves to be loved! She was introduced to the dog park and preferred digging and cuddling with the humans to playing with the dogs. Lola is a very affectionate girl and loves to be reminded that her people are her anchor. She would be a wonderful pet for a retired couple or someone that works from home, as she loves spending time with her family. She gets very attached to her person and can be protective when in the home. She may need to be crated when new guests come over so she does not try to guard her family. Lola is a good eater and enjoys dry and wet food. She loves to play fetch with her squeaky toy! She can be vocal sometimes, whining and singing the song of her people, much like other little dogs. She is a very sweet, special girl and is looking for the right home! Lola is up to date on vaccinations, spayed, microchipped, and on her monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventatives. Her adoption fee is $225. If you would like to adopt sweet Lola, please fill out an application for her using this link: https://www.secondchancenc.org/adopt-a-pet/dog-adoption-application/?src=sidebar If you have additional questions about Lola, please contact the Dog Program Manager at laura@secondchancenc.org. Posted Breed: Schnauzer / Schnauzer / Mixed. SPECIAL NEEDS DOG - Please read carefully before considering putting an application in for Gray. At only 5 years old it is hard to believe Gray has had congenital kidney issues her whole life. It did take us awhile to figure out to what degree the condition affected her adoptability and life expectancy. If she is kept on her special kidney food and visits a vet for frequent bloodwork then she could live a full life. Gray certainly is not an easy snuggly dog, which we feel may have have something to do with her condition. She is as anxious schnauzer (now on meds) who seems confused about the proper way to react to even the simplest touch. She will take a long time to trust anybody new in her life and having a buddy that already knows the ins & out may help her confidence. This buddy should be under 20 lbs, as big dogs tend to receive quite a bit of schnauzer attitude. Yes, Schnauzer Attitude! If you know what this means and are willing to put up with it then please consider Gray. With the time she has spent in her foster home we have learned her snapping triggers. So far we know she should never be awoken without expecting her Elivis snarl and a snap. She is also not easily groomed or have proper manners when visiting the vet. This is mostly because they both tend to have to touch her face and bum areas. Because of her tendency to react by snapping she will not do well in a home with children or with anyone who's reaction time is slower than average. So do you have patients, understand a schnauzer attitude, are willing to continue medical care and already have a small dog who is looking for a friend? Well then you may be a good fit for Gray. She really is a good girl once you give her a chance and she eventually connects to you through time and trust. Gray is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccines, on my monthly flea/tick and Heartworms preventatives. Posted Breed: Italian Greyhound / Plott Hound / Mixed. Hi my name is Cleo and I am a very loving little gal that can't wait to find a family to call my own! I am around 2 years old and weigh about 24 pounds. My foster mom wanted to name me Egypt because I remind her of the Egyptian dog statues, but instead decided to name me Cleopatra aka Cleo! I like my new name, as I too think I'm a queen. I am extremely people friendly and love to be held and give kisses. Foster mom picks me up like a baby and I wash her face with kisses when she lets me! I've never understood why she goes and washes her face again after I do it but she does it every time. Humans are weird... Foster mom is trying to teach me not to jump out of excitement when I meet new people but it is still a work in progress. I am dog selective and tend to prefer larger dogs to smaller dogs. With a slow introduction, I do well with pretty much all male dogs my size or bigger, and most large females. My best friend, that already got adopted, name was Brownie! We ran around my foster mom's backyard like there was no tomorrow! I get new friends a lot at this home but keep hoping my forever will come along! I love children of all sizes, but I would prefer to go to a home with older children (pre-teen - teenagers) or to a kid-free home because of my high energy. I am not good with cats. I am crate trained and potty trained and I love to snuggle on the couch! If given a little time, I could be left in the house without a crate. I am an escape artist and got out of the fence at one of my foster mom's friend's house. Luckily, I am not a darter but just to be safe I should not be left unattended in the back yard unless it is very secure! Speaking of backyards... I would love to go to a home with a big back yard to play in. Currently I have a large back yard and am trained to use a doggy door. I have leash aggression that has improved while I've been with my foster mom, but it still has a long way to go. For the time being I would prefer to get my exercise in the backyard with my family or on walks where there are not a lot of other dogs. I love to walk but I get way too excited when I see a strange dog and I do not seem nice when that happens. I would benefit greatly from an owner that is dog savvy and willing to spend extra time with me on socialization/training related to my leash aggression. I am up to date on vaccines, microchipped, spayed, heartworm negative, and on monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention. My adoption fee is $225. If you have additional questions about me please contact my foster mom at laura@secondchancenc.org. If you would like to apply to adopt me please do so using this link: Adoption Application I can't wait to meet my forever family because I have so much love to give! Could it be you??? Posted Breed: Hound / Hound / Mixed. Dancer is a beautiful girl with some rather specific needs. When she first entered the program, we quickly learned she had some pretty bad anxities. We were having trouble with house & crate training because she was so nervous about being left alone. So we decided medication was needed. The medication has helped so much. The one thing that is still important to know is that she refuses to crate and will do best in a home that will learn to trust her quickly and will leave things for her to chew on when alone. Being all alone is not good for her, having another dog is necessary. Having someone that is home all the time would be awesome for her, but in the foster home she is in now, that is not the situation. She currently lives in a home with a doggy door. This has been perfect for Dancer as she can take herself out to potty whenever she has to go, as well as allowing her the freedom to let her energy out by running laps around the yard at her leisure. While a doggy door is not necessary, a fenced in yard is. She is a big eater too! If she does not get enough food she will look for it on the counter and even in the refrigerator. Wow, right? Dancer comes with some pretty specific needs. However, she is one of the sweetest dogs you will ever meet. Loves having her huge floppy ears rubbed while cuddling during TV time. Will sit for a treat if she sees it in your hand. She loves to cuddle at night time. The road to becoming adoptable has been a long one for Dancer. She has come SO far since we pulled her from a rural shelter. Yes, she has a lot of needs in finding a forever home. But we know the right family will fall in love with this beautiful girl and her quirks will not matter to them. Location: USA
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / German Shepherd Dog / Mixed. Meet Nyx, a 3 year old black German Shepherd who weighs in at 100lbs! Please read very carefully before applying for adoption. Nyx Requires: *Six foot tall privacy fence *An adopter with previous German Shepherd and large breed experience *An adopter who will commit and enroll in positive reinforcement training classes upon adoption Hi there, I am Nyx and boy do I have a story to tell you! I've had a very unstable life in my three years so I am looking for that special place to call my own. I was surrendered to the shelter by my first family. I spent some time there before being rescued. After 2 weeks in my foster home I started to herd the resident kids as any untrained German Shepherd is inclined to do and the foster felt like it was not going to be a great fit for me so I moved to another home. I was only there a short time before I was adopted to what I thought was my special forever, but I did thrive in my second foster home. Sadly, my adoption did not work out for me as I learned to throw my weight around to get my way. I quickly learned that my mouthy puppy behavior could make people do what I wanted. I also developed an aversion to the word "no" that made me balk. Eventually I was returned to my rescue because the family wasn't sure they could handle me anymore, remember I am a BIG boy. Even my former foster mom was worried about me because of how I was behaving, but she and her friends were determined to help me get back to the good boy we all knew I could be. So she sent me to the Hot Dog Man in Ohio (mama said his real name is Steffen Baldwin, you should check him out!) with hopes that he could get me back on the right track. And after 6 weeks away with the Hot Dog Man, and now 4 weeks back in my foster home, I am pleased to tell you my real story has begun! Now I am on the hunt for that special forever that can make sure I stay the good boy I am. That is why foster mama is posting the requirements that she has. I need a home who knows my breed, who knows the behaviors that come with being a German Shepherd. I need a mom/dad who is confident in handling a boy my size and continuing to socialize me with people of all types. I need a forever home that will commit to training me FOR LIFE. I am too smart to sit around and be bored. Even the Hot Dog Man said my intelligence is what gets me into trouble. Because of this, foster mama requires enrollment in positive-reinforcement training classes for an approved adopter before they can bring me home forever. I need a fenced in yard. The reason for this is I do have a lot of energy that needs worked out. I need to be able to run and use my nose for more than just a walk. I did great playing with the other dogs while at training, but prefer to play one-on-one instead of a group. I do take correction well from other dogs too. I live with cats in my foster home, but may be best in a home without cats only because when I go to sniff them I accidentally push them around. I also live with small children and I do love them. Sometimes I forget how big I am though and they may take a tumble in my presence so maybe a home with two-leggers who are more stable on their feet? If you can be that home for me, here's what you get in return: *A big doofus of a boy who wants to love and please you *A super intelligent companion. Wait! Did I already mention that?! Well I know "watch", "sit", "come", "wait", "down", "paw" (though I am a bit rough with that so mama doesn't use it often). *A great Netflix-and-chill partner *A loyal companion and protector for life Foster mama said she would wait as long as it takes to find that perfect home since I deserve nothing less that perfect after how my first 3 years of life went. She told me I deserve nothing shy of the best going into my 4th year. If you have questions about me please email my foster mom at fchsjess@gmail.com and she will tell you more about me. I am already neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm negative and on prevention, dewormed, and on flea/tick prevention. My adoption fee is $225. Posted Breed: Husky / Husky / Mixed. Hi! My name is Phoebe and I am a very loving young girl! I am estimated to be about 2 years old and a husky something mix. I would make a great addition to a home with just women in it. Sometimes I get scared and anxious around men and boys, and act out with fear. I have been offered some free training sessions by a wonderful woman from Teamwork's, which I'll be starting in January 2018! These sessions are a starting point for me to overcome my fears, but it can take a long time. You see, I was owned by a young man that abandoned me and my puppies which is how I came to be in a foster program. It is unclear whether he was mean to me (though I was very malnourished), or whether I was just severely underaicialized with men other than him. I am grateful that he did give me up, because I really like having a full belly and a warm place to lay my head at night. I also love having lots of doggy playmates to romp around with! My foster home has lots of dogs in it and I get along with all of them. I do like to run and play so a home with another playful dog would be preferable but not required. I feel more confident when I have other dogs around but know I could build confidence as an only pet with a patient adopter. I love to get belly rubs and spend time chewing on yummy toys. If you come up to me and sweet talk me I will roll over on my back and ask for some scratches! Even though I was malnourished when I was taken in, I do not have any food aggression. I know how to sit, and I walk pretty well on a leash, but still have some learning to do. I do not like to hop into the car, but once I'm in I ride very well. At my foster Mom's house, I do not sleep in a crate, but I am okay in a crate if necessary in my new home. I managed to escape from a crate when I first got to my foster Mom's house, but I did not destroy anything and honestly just prefer to chill out with the other dogs or play with them when she is not home. I am also trained how to use a doggy door. Please consider making me your new best friend! I am a really awesome gal and am already spayed, up to date on shots, on monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventative, and microchipped! My adoption fee is $225 and applications can be filled out at secondchancenc.org. If you have any questions about me, please contact my foster mom At laura@secondchancenc.org You can also fill out an application to get the adoption process started.
