Posted Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier (short coat). Motley was brought to the shelter by city workers when he was found running loose. He is a precious Staffie who was just terrified when he arrived at the shelter. He quickly warmed up to staff and turned into a big wiggly lovebug! Motley is about 1.5 years old and weighs 45 lbs. He has been neutered. Motley does not care for children (they make him nervous) and should not go to a home with children under 16. He appears to ignore cats and he seems afraid of other dogs so he would probably be most comfortable with other submissive animals or be the only pet. Motley has been through a lot in his short life and would thrive in a stable, secure home filled with love. As scared as he was, he never attempted to bite staff, but any animal who has been through trauma should be treated with patience and gentleness. Motley has already shown he will repay kindness with lots of love and kisses!! Motley's adoption fee is only $60. Unless otherwise stated, the adoption fee for dogs over 4 months is $120.00. Puppies under 4 months are $140.00 The adoption fee includes the animal's surgery, microchip, vaccinations, flea preventative, deworming medication, sample bag of food/treat samples and a free first exam with participating veterinarians. Shelter policy is that all animals must be spayed or neutered prior to leaving the shelter. Our shelter is open to the public on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm and other times by appointment. More About Staffordshire Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      rescue
      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Hillsdale, IN
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Declan and his mom Drew were brought to the shelter when they were found as strays. Declan is about 5 months old, up to date on vaccines and weighs 20 lbs. His mom is about 2 years old and weighs 30 lbs, so Declan will probably not get much bigger than that. Declan and his mom are initially nervous around new people, but they quickly warm up. They are better with women than men, but once they are comfortable with a woman, they will let men pet and touch them if the woman is around. They lived with children previously so they should be fine with kids, but we do recommend a meet and greet to be sure they will all get along! Both mama and son are a bit barky with other animals, but could learn to get along in a positive and consistent environment. Both Declan and Drew will be altered before joining their forever homes. They do not have to be adopted together but they can be for a discount! Breed: Boxer
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Hillsdale, IN
Posted Breed: Boxer (short coat). Vega was brought to the shelter by some Good Samaritans who had been feeding her and gaining her trust over the course of several weeks. She is an older boxer (at least 7 years old) who is up to date on vaccines and weighs 46 lbs. Vega has several health issues, we hope to address what we can and get her into a foster or adoptive home to live out her remaining golden years in comfort. Vega has a tumor on her back hock (probably easily removed) and she tested positive for heartworms. We will consult a vet to see if she can be spayed and have the tumor removed safely. Vega is also half blind from glaucoma. She has been very friendly with staff and walks well on a leash. She appears to be housebroken but cannot hold for extremely long periods of time. Vega is reactive to other animals around her cage and food (who can blame her?) and young children would be too much for her at this point. We do believe she would do well with older children. If you have a soft spot for boxers, please contact us today to help sweet Vega--she has been on her own long enough! Her adoption fee is $10. Breed: Boxer-Unknown Mix

      Location: Hillsdale, IN
Posted Breed: Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Rocko was originally brought in a stray. He was adopted quickly but the other dog in the home never learned to like him so after two months, his owners sadly brought him back. Rocko is a super sweet, loving little guy (he is full grown but still looks like a puppy, and it was hard to get him to stand still for his pictures so this is one dog you'll have to see in person to appreciate!) Rocko is around 3 years old, neutered, up to date on vaccines and weighs 26 lbs. He would ADORE some kids or another nice doggie to play with (when the other dog was aggressive, he would run and hide) so please make Rocko's Christmas wish come true and give him a loving family for life! Age: Adult
      Location: Hillsdale, IN
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever (short coat). Mimi came to the shelter when her family abandoned her--when extended family members found out, they brought her in to be cared for. She is a darling little lab mix who is around 2.5 years old and weighs 31 lbs. She is spayed and up to date on vaccines and heartworm negative. Mimi was not treated well in her previous home and is initially a cautious girl around adults. She ADORES children though and will let them do anything to her! Mimi is also slow to warm up to other dogs (she has found some that she will play with!) and is great with cats. UPDATE: Mimi has been accepted into the ADOPT training program where she will be taught basic obedience commands, housetraining and socialization skills. She should graduate in early March and her adoption fee is $150. Please contact the shelter today for adoption reservation of this great girl!
