Posted Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Roxy was surrendered at Chicago Animal Care and Control because of moving/landlord issues. It was clear that Roxy wasn't well cared for. She had missing hair patches due to fleas and overgrown nails making it uncomfortable for her to walk. Roxy was terrified in her cage and caught an illness in the shelter. In a matter of days, her status URGENT--she wasn't "showing well" in her cage due to her fear and her sickness. With a cough and very bad congestion, the Animal Welfare League pulled her out and took her into their shelter, where she remained in isolation for over two weeks. Dogs are Deserving found a foster and got her out of the shelter and into a home. Roxy really blossomed once she got into a home. She seemed to know she was finally safe. She sat, gave paw with both paws, went down on command, rolled onto her back, and went right into her cage to lay down. She is a big lap dog. She loves being close to her people, and will nap right on top of you. When she has been crated, Roxy/Baby Bear has a little happy dance she does in the crate before opening it. We believe that her previous owners may have used items to hit her, so she does flinch at anything that is swung near her and at loud noises. Roxy/Baby Bear needs to be in a home with no cats or small animals. And at this point, no other dogs - pending her training. Roxy has been showing some reactivity on leash and is in need of training. DADR is working on getting her into class. And we expect any adopter to continue to practice dog etiquette with her long term. She’s a loving, sassy little thing and she really enjoys belly rubs. Roxy loves to play co-pilot on car rides in her foster daddy’s truck. She loves her dog food and treats. She also loves balls--so much so that she loves them to death...destroying them quickly. She just started getting a hang of the tug toy and is really enjoying that too. Roxy/Baby Bear likes to lounge around the house. She is very interested in looking out the window at the small animals that pass by - sometimes a little too interested that the blinds need to be shut. She also loves to go on walks and on a nice jog. She loves hearing any words that have to do with food and walk! And Roxy/Baby Bear has a lot of patience... waiting at the top of the stairs for her walks until her foster daddy is ready for her to come down for her walk.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Three pit bull mix puppies were rescued after being posted on Craigslist at only 3 weeks old. Their mom was chained to a tree without food, water or shelter. The puppies were in a dirt floor chicken coop, without their mother. When the rescuers arrived most of the puppies had died. Eventually, the mom and these three survivors were rescued. Carmine can be a laid back and want to snuggle; however, he also loves to run after the Frisbee and play in the baby pool! Carmine loves to give kisses. He is shy when meeting new people but he is very curious about them. If a new person sits on a step or the floor he will slowly make his way and start giving kisses. Once he warms up he is a total love-bug goofball. Carmine is not found of dogs who try and dominate him but he does well with friendly pups. He will even snuggle with them. Carmine has never been around young children and he doesn't quite know what to think of them. He is an amazing boy! Please give him a chance!

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Look into the smiling eyes of this wonderful brindle boy! And check out those curious ears! One up, one down. This is Addison Russell. Addison Russell is a 35 pound young man. He's housebroken, loves kids and loves other dogs. We aren't sure what he thinks about cats since he hasn't been around any. He's a curious people watcher, sitting for hours, just staring out the window. He doesn't bark much, even when he sees people outside. He just gets excited and wants to run and play with them. Addison Russell loves his chewbones and plays a little game hiding them so only he knows where they are. He can be picky about those chewbones, showing a little "but you gave it to me!" aggression but he is getting better every day as he learns to trust. And really, who would take this sweet little dude's bone?!? Addison Russell is a snuggle-bug and always wants to be next to someone. He doesn't like it when the kids in his foster house play rough. Maybe he sees this as hurting each other and he will try to get in between to protect them...separating them and breaking it up. He's still not sure about outside and needs more practice walking on a leash without pulling. He will take a seat when you ask him to, but is still learning other words. He's a quick and eager learner. That said, he also has the confidence to express his point of view. When you tell him "no", he sometimes likes to talk back in a barky howl. We think he's explaining himself and trying to persuade you to let him go back to what he was doing. Addison Russell is truly is a great dog and will be a wonderful addition to anyone's home. Give us a call to meet him!

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). This sweet little girl is super-timid, but oh so loving. She only wants to be petted. And when you hear OC’s story, you’ll understand why. You see, OC came into the shelter at 4 months old as court “evidence”. Her person had been arrested for abuse. After 6 months in the shelter, the case was closed. Let that sink in: Seven months of her first year—practically her entire puppyhood—stuck in a cage. She and her four brothers/sisters were released back to the animal who owned them. He decided that OC and her sister were not good enough for his enterprise, so he left them there. We think they are better off with us! Because now, we get to help OC and her sister! It took her a few days to learn to jump up on the bed, but she figured it out. OC now sleeps with her foster, cuddling and burrowing into the covers like she’s always known a bed. The bed truly is her safe haven. She’s still shaky going up and down stairs, but she’s getting the hang of it. OC is learning about using the bathroom outside. OC is going to need patience and love. She still gets a little scared when you move too fast. And going for walks makes her nervous—that leash—she doesn’t care for it one bit. The world is a big, big place to this sweetie, so she likes to know her spaces. Going outside in a fenced yard works just fine. We don’t know how she is with kids, but she is great with her foster dog brother. And of course, she’s got a lot of lost play time to make up! OC loves playing with her foster brother Norman. They run, run, run around the yard and play tug-of-war in the house. She hops like a rabbit when she plays. OC sees herself in the mirror and her ears stand up straight. And she likes to lick you with her long fat tongue. She loves her treats, but she’s skinny. You can see her ribs right now. But she’s growing into them! Won’t you come meet OC? She’s looking for someone who will share their bed, their hearts and their love. She has a lot of missing time to make up!

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). When sweet Georgia came to her foster home, she broke hearts with the empty look in her eyes. It was as if all her hope and happiness had been taken away, and left a fearful shell behind. But we're happy to say that now, several months later; Georgia is getting her groove back. Georgia came into the shelter at 4 months old as court “evidence”. Her person had been arrested for animal abuse. After over 6 months in the shelter, the case was closed. Let that sink in: Seven months of her first year—practically her entire puppyhood—stuck in a cage. She and her four brothers/sisters were released back to the animal who owned them. He decided that Georgia and her sister were not good enough for his enterprise, so he left them there. We think they are better off with us! Because now, we get to help Georgia and her sister! Today, Georgia's beautiful brown eyes are no longer empty and scared. She has an innocent look of curiosity and her confidence is building. When she's comfortable, she holds her head high--standing pretty and tall, tail up and wagging. Georgia can still be a little skittish, especially outside or with strangers. But once she gets to know you, she will also be your floppy puppy--plopping into your lap like a teeny-tiny pup for love and affection. She has a great love of a couch, and she loves blankets so much that she must taste them...shredding them into hamster bedding materials. Georgia has recently discovered her tail, and tries diligently to catch it. It looks like those chewies that she's also starting to show interest in. She's a delicious caramel color and filling out into a lovely young lady. Georgia plays with her foster sister dog, but doesn't know what to think about the more hyperactive foster sibling dog--and they only get supervised leash play for now. Georgia's confidence is a work in progress. And the best home for her is going to be someone with a ton of patience and empathy to get her over her fears slowly. Some things she's wrestling with: "More than four stairs! OMG! Scary. Too many!" She is working on her potty training…it is taking a bit longer because she has been nervous about the great outdoors -- "Tell me again, WHY we are outside?!?" Right now, Georgia is afraid of children, and would do best in a home without the fast-moving little ones. She prefers a quiet secluded spot to play with her toys and nap. Georgia would benefit from being in a home with another dog who can show her the routines and demonstrate that there's nothing more to be afraid of. Georgia's lucky forever home is out there. We know she has a spirit match in this universe. Please give us a call to find out if it's you! :) OC This sweet little girl is super-timid, but oh so loving. She only wants to be petted. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Mickey is a patch-work pit bull mix, with a Mickey Mouse emblem on his back. He is a good boy who has been patiently waiting for a home to call his own. Mickey is selective with dogs he likes. Generally he loves people, but does not like people or dogs to get in his face, it just makes him nervous. So, he would be best in a home without little children who do not understand. He loves to play fetch and run through the yard! And he does great on walks...he absolutely LOVES walks! And since he is totally housebroken, he will want to take you for walks often. Mickey wants ALL of your attention and will be a great friend to the perfect person. Thank you! Hope to meet you soon!!

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Just look at that face! Patient. Curious. Listening. She only wants to be with you and to hear you talk. And those eyes--one blue, one brown! Gaze into those eyes...and wait for sweet Lola's smile. What a remedy for screen-addiction! Just think of the things you can do with this super sweetheart by your side: Go for a run, take a long walk, snuggle on the couch with a book or a remote control. She'll be there! Need to run some errands? She loves her car rides! And Lola enjoys her baths, her ball, bed and Kong toy. She is house trained, and she's smart. Lola doesn't get into anything when left alone in the house, and she doesn't chew on anything but her toys. She knows "sit", "stay", "paw", "leave it", "no", and her favorite, "come"! She is good with dogs who are also good with dogs--but will not put up with cranky-pants dogs. We're not sure what Lola thinks about cats, but we hear she lived with one for a little while. She is good with kids. This doll is about 5 years old and weighs 42 pounds. Her family was forced to give her up because of an unfortunate housing situation and felt they had no other alternative. We know it must have broken her heart, so we are anxious for her to find just the right people to make her happy forever. She only wants to be with her people, to sit near the ones she loves. Lola will make a fine, easy addition to your home and into your heart. Please give us a call to meet this sweet pumpkin!

Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Terrier / Mixed (short coat). One look a those eyes, and you can guess where this pretty girl gets her name! This Elizabeth Taylor is a little slow to warm up. We don't know much about her background, but whatever happened to her has made her a little nervous. She seems to do best when with another dogs...trusting other dogs before she trusts a human being. If you are gentle and take your time, soon Elizabeth Taylor will snuggle up to you for some cuddling. Elizabeth Taylor is a dainty ~28 lbs now. She has a low-to-medium energy level. And while she loves to run around the yard playing with the other dogs, she also knows when to chill out and snuggle on the couch. Elizabeth Taylor is about 1 1/2 years old. She is not a chewer, although she has chewed several electrical cords in her foster home (!!! but something has to power those bright blue eyes!) She won't chew a nylabone but likes peanut butter in her kong. She is good with kids and dogs, but we've not seen her with cats. She's still working on potty training and leash walking. Sometimes Elizabeth Taylor gets very scared and you will have to come to her rescue...picking her up to carry her to her safe place. While she gets nervous and afraid, she does not growl and does not seem to be so fearful that she would bite. Please get in touch to meet this beautiful girl with the amazing eyes! Elizabeth Taylor is looking for that perfect Richard Burton, or maybe Eddie Fisher, or no...maybe Richard Burton again... :)
