Posted Breed: Whippet / Terrier / Mixed. Anela is a 9-year-old, 42-pound Whippet/Terrier mix. This sweet old gal is a loving and playful pooch who adores people and will make some lucky person a loyal companion. She's very affectionate and always happy to let you give her a good belly scratch. She thinks she's a lap dog, so if you're sitting on the couch, get ready for snuggles. She can peacefully coexist with other dogs as well as dog-savvy cats. She walks well on the leash and has the energy to hike or walk a mile or more, only pulling when she gets overly excited to greet another dog. Her initial enthusiasm can be a bit overwhelming for some dogs, but she's much more calm with dogs she knows. She's working on developing a more appropriate greeting when out and about. It's not completely her fault—she's just bursting with joy, and it's hard for her to contain herself sometimes. Anela is house-trained and prances around you when it's time to go outside. She's fine being left alone, though she might cry a bit when you leave just so you know you'll be missed. She rides well in the car and her favorite thing to play with is her rope toy. When you need to catch her attention, treats are the way to go. Miss Anela is very food-oriented. Whippets are naturally gentle, sensitive creatures and make devoted companions. They love having a warm place to cuddle up. Can you give this girl a soft spot to land and a loving home? She'll be forever grateful. Oh, and keep an eye on that tail. She's so expressive and happy all the time, she might accidentally wag right into you.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Pacific Grove, CA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Breed: Chihuahua Age: 6 years Weight: 7 pounds Gender: Male Bologna is a great companion, whether you're a senior who sticks close to home or a young family who's always on the go. He has a contagious love for life and an enviable carefree personality. He is loyal and affectionate and still has a lot of puppy-like enthusiasm for adventure! In his current forest home, he gets along great with both dogs and cats. He is also a star among the neighborhood kids who love to pet him and help walk him. They can't get enough of him, and he is always quite the gentleman. He loves going on adventures, particularly long walks and hikes. Whether it's up trails at a park or around the various pet-friendly shopping centers in the area, he loves going out and seeing the world. He also loves the car rides that get you there! At home, he is adorable because he likes to be in the same room as you. If you move to another room, he loyally follows if he senses you're not coming back after a few minutes. He also looks for any excuse to cuddle up and nap on or next to you. He is crate-trained and walks great on a leash. He even behaves while you're gone, which means he's a breeze to take care of. When you get home, he's there at the door with a big smile on his little face. Sadly, both of Bologna's guardians passed away. A family member gave him to a loving couple who offered to help him find his forever family and they reached out to POMDR for help. He just cannot wait to find a forever home that will love him as much as he loves them.

      Belle Terrie...

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Pacific Grove, CA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed. Belle is a 12-year-old, 16-pound Silky Terrier mix. More than anything, she loves cuddling with her person. Since she's blind and can't see your face, she will lovingly lick the air until she makes contact with your chin (at which point you should expect copious kisses). Her personality is precious and incredibly endearing. Since her vision is impaired, meeting new dogs can be a startling experience for her. If they bump into her, or vice versa, she can react in fear and start a scuffle. But sometimes she just sniffs and is on her way. We think the happiest scenario for sweet Belle is one where she is the center of your attention and the only dog in your home. Belle navigates her surroundings with caution but surprising ease and enthusiasm. She enjoys investigating the yard and loves going for walks, especially in wide open spaces where she doesn't bump into things. She's easy to handle and enjoys being picked up. Belle is excited to go for car rides and just loves them. When it's time for her daily eye drops or to take a bath, she's a good little girl. Belle has low vision in one eye and light perception in the other, according to our ophthalmologist. Belle loves being brushed and sits patiently for you, then she runs around the room to show off how pretty she looks. She has the most energy when she's fresh out of the bath! One thing to keep in mind: Ms. Belle is a fan of the culinary arts, so it's probably a good idea to keep food put away when it's not mealtime. Belle spent her previous years as an outdoor dog, being passed around among family members. She was picked up as a stray, and the family made the difficult decision to surrender her to Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter.

      Location: Pacific Grove, CA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Chihuahua / Mixed. This precious little one-eyed lady is Daisy Maisy! She is an 11-year-old, 17 pound Terrier/Chihuahua mix and she'll steal your heart with a wink and a smile! She has a good, yet mellow, energy level, and she gets a little more excited at meal time. One of her favorite activities is going for short walks around the neighborhood with you, and Daisy will love to go for a car ride with you, too. Daisy Maisy lived in a family with both cats and older children and did well with them. She is good with other dogs and falls in love with most people that she meets. Daisy Maisy quickly rolls over to ask her new friends for belly rubs! Daisy Maisy's missing eye has no effect on her great personality - we don't know how long it has been missing, but she has adapted well. She has been diagnosed with Cushing's Disease and she is being treated for it. Though this is is a chronic disease, she is easily medicated, and as she adores being near you, Daisy will be easy to monitor throughout her life. Daisy Maisy was mostly an outdoor dog who slept in a dog house at night in her previous life. She deserves to come inside and be part of a loving family. Other than reminding Daisy not to jump on the couch, she is doing well with 'run of the house' while her current foster family is away. She'll miss you a bit when you go out, and she'll be all happy tail wags and wiggles when you return! She came to us from the SPCA for Monterey County where she was surrendered when her family moved into housing that didn't allow pets.

      Location: Pacific Grove, CA
Posted Breed: Cattle Dog / Mixed. Shorty is a 12-year-old, 25-pound Basset Hound mix. Patches is his best friend and she is a 13-year-old, 33-pound Queensland Heeler. Shorty is a mellow guy who is very sweet with all people. He has a charming, calm personality. He gets along well with other dogs and is a well-behaved boy. He loves being petted and will give little kisses to tell you he's happy being around you. Patches is also a wonderful dog and has a quiet, calm demeanor. She is happy to accept scratches behind the ears and will walk up to anyone to say "hi." She is mostly deaf and has mild arthritis in her hips but has a very gentle, loving soul. Patches treats Shorty like her puppy and takes care of him. They tend to stick together and are very bonded. Shorty and Patches are house-trained and walk nicely on the leash, though they won't need long walks to tire them out. We do not know if they have lived with cats before but they are very calm dogs and would probably be fine with feline friends in the household. They are currently outdoor-only dogs and would love an opportunity to come back in the house and be a part of a family again. Shorty and Patches came to POMDR after their guardian passed away and their guardian's family members were unable to care for him.

      Breed: Chipin
      Sex: Female Female

      Location: Pacific Grove, CA
Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher / Chihuahua / Mixed. Callie (previously known as "Mancha") is an 11-year-old, 10-pound Miniature Pinscher/Chihuahua mix. She is a little lover and is incredibly easy to handle. Her foster mom describes her as a "funny, sweet, playful little monkey." She most adores snuggling in a dog bed or under a blanket and darts around like a much younger dog. She is still fun and lively, don't let her age fool you! Sweet Callie has a mild heart murmur that doesn't require any treatment. She came to us with a non-functional left eye, which had to be removed. She's good with other dogs of all sizes and would fit in easily to a low- to mid-activity level home. She rides nicely in the car. She walks surprisingly fast on the leash and finds comfort in having a loving person around. Callie walks with a pronounced arch of her lower back. She has been seen by an orthopedic surgeon, and he said she has a chronic intervertebral protrusion. It is not causing her overt pain. She is going to physical therapy (laser and swim therapy) and it definitely helps her feel more spunky. She also takes joint supplements and an anti-inflammatory for pain control. Callie was part of a family before ending up at the shelter. She was brought in as a stray but her previous guardian was unable to pay the necessary fees to get her back and surrendered her instead.

Posted Breed: Shepherd / Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Bella is an 8-year-old, 75 pound Shepherd/Labrador mix. This gorgeous girl knows that size doesn't matter, and she loves to cuddle with her family! She is always ready to play with her little Dachshund foster sibling, too. Bella is a totally wonderful dog, who, along with her guardians that are getting divorced, was heartbroken when neither was able to keep her. While Bella politely sniffs or ignores new dog friends, she is very friendly when she meets new people because they can pet her and give her treats. She'll show you her appreciation with a big, happy smile. Bella is overly interested in cats in her house, so it's probably best if she is in a feline-free home. She is a fabulous beach dog, or she'll do nicely on a leash for a long walk. A car ride suits Bella just fine, too. She'll ride in the backseat with her head out the window or propped between the two front seats so she doesn't miss a thing. She is house-trained, and even knows basic commands. She's incredibly intelligent and learns quickly. At night, Bella sleeps quietly in her bed. She is very loyal and she might feel a little sad when you have to leave her at home and go out. She'll settle down quickly, though, when she learns to trust that you will be coming home to her soon. Bella's great smile has a big, loving heart to match and she will bring tons of joy to her new forever family!

      Breed: Shih Tzu
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Pacific Grove, CA
Posted Breed: Shih Tzu. Dixie is a 13-year-old, 17-pound Shih Tzu. She is as mellow and loving as they come. And boy does she love food! She may generally have the lower energy level you'd expect from an older dog, but when food is involved she'll practically do back flips to charm it out of your hands. Even when it's something healthy like carrots (her favorite snack). Her new family will probably need to take her on regular walks to help her lose a few pounds. Dixie Chick still has some pep in her step and enjoys her walks. She's not setting any speed records, but she does walk nicely on a leash. She's polite to the dogs she encounters and never barks. Dixie isn't big on playing. She's just happy to coexist with other dogs and people. She fits in beautifully with everybody in her foster-family pack, which includes several dogs and kitties. She's self-sufficient and reliably house-trained. She also knows how to use puppy pads, if needed, and appreciates easy access to the outside. Dixie isn't demanding, aggressive or vocal. She takes lots of naps throughout the day, lounging on a blanket or in her dog bed. At night, she's happy to cuddle next to you. When it's mealtime, it's a good idea to keep Dixie separated from other dogs' bowls. If you don't, this hungry little gal is likely to eat their food as well as hers. Like most senior dogs, Dixie has some age-related hearing and vision loss. This doesn't slow her down one bit - she keeps up with the rest of the dogs, jumps on the furniture (if invited) and is fine navigating stairs. She needs eye drops each day and is very good about letting you put them in. She's also on a daily allergy medication. Dixie came to us when her guardian was going into assisted living and felt she couldn't offer Dixie the life she deserved.

      Location: Pacific Grove, CA
Posted Breed: Pomeranian / Mixed. BB King is a 10-year-old, 14-pound Pomeranian mix. He's a real charmer with a gentle, loving soul and beautiful, kind eyes. There are three things you need to know about BB King: he does a happy dance when you pull out his leash to go on a walk, he loves a good brushing like it's a full-body massage, and feeling the wind in his face while riding in the car is about the best thing ever. He happily greets every new person he meets, sometimes even flopping on his back for a belly rub. BB King has a mellow personality and gets along well with the dogs, cats, bunny, birds and fish at his foster home. Sometimes he wrestles with the dogs and one of the cats, who all seem to understand he's a little older and treat him gently. Otherwise, he's more into cuddling than running around. BB King does have a severe heart murmur and is on several medications. The cost of the medications is about $100 per month. He will also need a veterinary exam and possible x-rays every 4-6 months. Because of the risk associated with putting him under anesthesia, we will not be altering BB King. He has a very gentle, easy-going personality, and we know someone will love him exactly as he is. BB King came to us from the Hollister Animal Shelter. He's just the coolest old guy who's hoping for a wonderful companion for some quiet time, cuddles, brushing, and short walks. He's content to simply be part of your life and know he's loved.

Posted Breed: Poodle (unknown type) / Mixed. Dixie is a 23 pound, 11-year-old cuddly Cockapoo. She is a peppy little senior gal that loves attention and really thrives on human contact. She is on the timid side when meeting new people; she takes her time and then slowly warms up to them. Dixie's sight is impaired which may explain her timidity. Dixie is intrigued by cats and would love to have a cat friend in her life if possible. She has lived with dogs, too, and would be fine as an only dog or part of a pack. She hasn't shown interest in toys. When walking on a leash, she doesn't pull, but she wanders in all directions. She never runs unless encouraged to do so. When she gets excited in the house, she does have accidents. This can likely be corrected with training. She whines a little when separated from her foster, but quiets down eventually. Her foster mom says "Dixie loves to take car trips. She doesn't act her age. Minus the cataracts, you wouldn't know she was about 12. She acts younger -- bouncy, and happy!" Dixie has multiple health issues that need ongoing attention. She is on daily eye medication, but only sees the ophthalmologist every six months. She has chronic ear and skin issues and is under the care of a dermatologist. She has environmental allergies and takes daily medication to help keep her skin and ears healthy and needs weekly medicated baths. She also has low thyroid and is on a thyroid medication and needs to have her thyroid levels checked every 4-6 months. She is looking for a devoted adopter who isn't bothered by her special needs. Dixie came to us as a stray from Salinas Animal Services.

Posted Breed: Norfolk Terrier / Silky Terrier / Mixed. Jerry is an 8-year-old, 10 pound Norfolk Terrier mix. He is a quiet, gentle dog and gets along fine with other dogs. He doesn't have much experience walking on the leash but is making progress. He calmly tolerates being groomed and treated by the vet staff and is learning to understand that humans are also petting him to show him love. Jerry is looking for the perfect person to show him some kindness and affection and make him part of their "pack." He would love someone patient enough to teach him that the world is a safe place to be! This sweet soul really needs someone who understands that because of his turbulent past, he will never be a terribly outgoing boy and will have to become your friend over time, making gradual progress. He will sometimes approach his foster mama (a display of confidence that has taken time to achieve) and will even lick her hand. He just needs that special someone to be loyal to and trust. Jerry arrived as a stray that was really in need of medical attention and grooming. He is being treated for skin issues that are responding well to medication. He has re-grown a considerable amount of his coat and is now looking very handsome! Jerry came to POMDR from San Jose Animal Services after being picked up as a stray.
