Posted Breed: Weimaraner (short coat). NELLY - Austin 5 yr old gray female Hi there! I am NELLY, a beautiful gray Weimaraner. I am a sweet girl who loves nothing more than to be loved on and rubbed on. Well, okay, my other favorite activity is chasing squirrels in the backyard. But, that is a close second to being loved on and petted. I am potty trained and get along well with kids. I do not get along with small dogs, but ones my size are just fine. I came into rescue with several lumps that looked like bad news to the vet. I had surgery (see my cone of shame picture?) to remove them and test them. The tests revealed that I had mast cell cancer and removal of those lumps mean removal of most of the cancer. I might have more lumps show up later in my life, but with medication and a watchful eye on my lumps, I can have many great years ahead of me. Especially if I find my forever family. My ideal family would continue to work with me on learning how to walk properly on a leash and also be willing to teach me many other cool things since I am a smart girl. They would also keep an eye on my health as I get older. Another dog in the family is a must for me as well. Would you consider giving me a forever home? Please ask about NELLY when you contact Weimaraner Rescue of Texas. For donations, please make your check payable to: Weimaraner Rescue of Texas, Inc. 4347 W. We are an all volunteer, 501(c)(3) non-profit, charitable organization. Donations are tax deductible as allowed by law. More About Weimaraner Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Weimaraner (short coat). Meet Sawyer, a gray 6 year old male, who is very laid back, except for when it is time to eat. He is a very calm chill dog (If you are looking for a calm weim – he’s your boy!). He uses a doggy door to go potty. Rarely barks at people or animals (totally ignores the Doberman that lives next door that barks at him). Responds well to guests entering your home (even small children) – no jumping only sniffing. Loves to just be with his people wherever you are, sleeping with you or hang out on the couch, but will sleep on his bed if you make him. He is learning that car rides are a good thing and can be fun. He is also learning how to properly walk on a leash, without pulling. He does ok meeting other dogs, as long as properly introduced. Sawyer suffers from some separation anxiety when left alone. He does pace inside and will drool at the back door, but is not destructive. He is learning how to occupy his time alone with treats and food puzzles. Sawyer is not a fan of the crate, he will try his best to get out of it. Sawyer is very food motivated and is doing well with his training. He will however, counter surf and dumpster dive in the garbage if it is left out. Sawyer's ideal forever home would be a home with older children and someone that is home the majority of the day. He does not require a lot of exercise, just a short walk every day would be great. He mostly just wants to be with you. Please ask about SAWYER when you contact Weimaraner Rescue of Texas. For donations, please make your check payable to: Weimaraner Rescue of Texas, Inc. 4347 W. Breed: Weimaraner

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Weimaraner (short coat). Meet Gunnar, a handsome 5-year-old male Weimaraner who has been with the rescue for over 10 months. Gunnar has worked through some behavioral challenges with his foster family, but has adjusted fully to being a part of their family and is ready to find a new forever home! Gunnar will take some time to warm up to a new family, but once he trusts someone and is comfortable with them, he will absolutely LOVE them and be excited to see them! Gunnar would probably do best in a home with an experienced large dog owner without kids, and with dogs that are not overzealous. He gets along with other dogs, but tends to be a loner, and does not like other dogs to be in his face. Gunnar is a little nervous on walks and outside of the home but does travel just fine. He will not be a good candidate to go to dog events or dog parks; he is more of a “chill at home with his people” kind of guy! He does know some basic obedience commands and is very respectful of correction and feedback. Gunnar is house-trained and crate trained, but does not like to be crated. He is fine out in the house as long as there is no food left out. He enjoys squirrel watching, playing with toys and tennis balls, and snuggling under blankets. He will be a wonderful companion for an adult only household that understands that trust takes time, but once earned he will be your loyal companion. Gunnar’s foster mom and the rescue trainer are available to answer any questions you may have and can help with Gunnar’s transition into a new home. Please consider making Gunnar a part of your family! For more detailed bio information or questions regarding Gunner, please contact us! Please ask about GUNNAR when you contact Weimaraner Rescue of Texas. For donations, please make your check payable to: Weimaraner Rescue of Texas, Inc. 4347 W. Posted Breed: Weimaraner (short coat). Meet Tucker! Tucker is a calm and super sweet boy who is looking for his forever home. Tucker is a very well behaved and well-mannered gentleman! He is fantastic with young kids, dogs, and cats. He would make a great companion. He is housebroken and doesn’t need to be crated . He loves his comfy bed, treats, and naps. Short, gentle walks will help keep his joints moving, but unfortunately he won’t be running any marathons. He will need a special family that is willing to give him some extra TLC. He was born with hip dysplasia and now has osteoarthritis in his hips. He will require medications to help manage his pain and inflammation due to the OA, but other than that he is in good health. He is very smart and has quickly picked up on some basic commands. He knows sit, come , and crate . If you are wanting a low-key boy, then Tucker is your man! Tucker's ideal family will help maintain his health with OA medication and give him a relaxing place to chill with a little bit of exercise to keep his joints moving. Posted Breed: Weimaraner (short coat). Meet Tango, a gray male who turned 4 this March and has been living the life of ease with his foster family. As easy as life is with a family with three crazy children and lots of friends over! One of the crazies is a 3 year old boy that "hugs" him each time he sees him, uses him as a pillow to watch movies and gets in his face since they are eye to eye often. Then we have to mention the 10 year old girl who likes to walk him around the neighborhood and show off his good looks and lock him in her room so she can dress him up. Finally there is the 11 year old who thinks Tango should just suit up in wrestling gear because that is all these two do! Oh, but we can't forget the foster mom who takes him for 5 am runs ranging anywhere between 3-9 miles. Call it what you want - life or ease or an avalanche of chaos. Either way he would fit in both environments nicely. Whether he has gone for a run or slept in he is going to lay around the house most of the day. No crate is need while he lounges, he has not damaged a thing or done any counter surfing during his year stay with his foster family. However he is crate trained if you prefer that, but he pouts when you tell him to go to his kennel. Tango came into foster care with his brother (a domineering boy who liked to hog all the attention). Therefore his confidence was very low. He has improved tremendously, however, he is very slow to warm up to other dogs. Not to say he won't. He has become best friends with his labrodoodle foster brother. They love to play tug of war. Tango can possess this timid behavior with other things as well (i.e. strangers, tile floors, sprinklers, and loud cars passing while on a walk/run. Keep in mind how rewarding it is to see your family members overcome these difficulties and earn trust in you and his new environment. Congenial follicular keratosis, try saying that three times fast! Congenial follicular keratosis is a condition Tango was born with presenting itself on his face. Additional flaky spots are seen on his elbows and knees. There is no known cure, but the good news is it is purely cosmetic! Tango's life will not be hurt or shortened due to this. It does not lead to any other conditions later in life. There are no known cures although 1 vitamin A capsule 800mg a day has improved the look of things by 30 percent. If you are going to have something this is an easy thing to deal with. The rescue has all the doctor documenting and foster family is willing to answer any questions you have regarding this issue. We have shed many tears watching this boy coming into his self! Please ask about TANGO when you contact Weimaraner Rescue of Texas. For donations, please make your check payable to: Weimaraner Rescue of Texas, Inc. 4347 W. Posted Breed: Weimaraner (short coat). Miracle is a real sweetie! She came into rescue overweight, with mast cell tumors, fatty tumors, weak hips, and a toenail that grew straight up. After three surgeries and a dedicated weight loss regimen, she is ready to go. She has lost 20 pounds, lost a toe, lost all the mast cell tumors, and has been diagnosed with a minor thyroid issue that is treatable with medication. She has her bounce back! Miracle (Mia for short) is low-key, but is definitely food motivated. She will sit at your feet and let you know it is time to eat...sometimes trying to move dinner time up a little bit! Otherwise, she likes a soft bed wherever her people are, walks, ear scratches, and definitely naps. She has not attempted to get on the furniture in her foster home and is happy sleeping on her bed in the bedroom beside her foster mom. She is house-trained, crate-trained, and is good with kids and dogs. Unknown about cats, but she doesn't seem interested in the squirrels in the yard. Mia deserves a good home that will appreciate her laid back, undemanding style. She is a loyal, loving companion. Posted Breed: Weimaraner (short coat). Gus is a handsome, gray Weimaraner with the most soulful eyes you'll ever see. This sweet boy had a rough life before coming into rescue and needs a routine, therapeutic environment to learn how to trust again. He already knows how to love, and will give it generously once you have gained his trust. The way Gus shows his fear is that he runs...he can be quite the escape artist. This can be remedied by taking him outside on a leash to do his business and then bringing him back inside. If you have a secure yard, Gus has learned how to use a doggy door, but he has been known to dig out, so it would need to be very secure. When spoken to, Gus will wag his little nub tail to let you know how much he is soaking in the attention. He is also a big fan of belly rubs. Gus will need another dog in his new home to show him how to trust and learn the ropes of living in a household. Gus's ideal family will be patient and gentle, and willing to overcome his fears and challenges, and with this sweet boy the rewards will be great. For more information about Gus, please fill out an application on our website.
