Posted Breed: Weimaraner (short coat). NELLY - Austin 5 yr old gray female Hi there! I am NELLY, a beautiful gray Weimaraner. I am a sweet girl who loves nothing more than to be loved on and rubbed on. Well, okay, my other favorite activity is chasing squirrels in the backyard. But, that is a close second to being loved on and petted. I am potty trained and get along well with kids. I do not get along with small dogs, but ones my size are just fine. I came into rescue with several lumps that looked like bad news to the vet. I had surgery (see my cone of shame picture?) to remove them and test them. The tests revealed that I had mast cell cancer and removal of those lumps mean removal of most of the cancer. I might have more lumps show up later in my life, but with medication and a watchful eye on my lumps, I can have many great years ahead of me. Especially if I find my forever family. My ideal family would continue to work with me on learning how to walk properly on a leash and also be willing to teach me many other cool things since I am a smart girl. They would also keep an eye on my health as I get older. Another dog in the family is a must for me as well. Would you consider giving me a forever home? Please ask about NELLY when you contact Weimaraner Rescue of Texas. For donations, please make your check payable to: Weimaraner Rescue of Texas, Inc. 4347 W. More About Weimaraner Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Weimaraner (short coat). Miracle is a real sweetie! She came into rescue overweight, with mast cell tumors, fatty tumors, weak hips, and a toenail that grew straight up. After three surgeries and a dedicated weight loss regimen, she is ready to go. She has lost 20 pounds, lost a toe, lost all the mast cell tumors, and has been diagnosed with a minor thyroid issue that is treatable with medication. She has her bounce back! Miracle (Mia for short) is low-key, but is definitely food motivated. She will sit at your feet and let you know it is time to eat...sometimes trying to move dinner time up a little bit! Otherwise, she likes a soft bed wherever her people are, walks, ear scratches, and definitely naps. She has not attempted to get on the furniture in her foster home and is happy sleeping on her bed in the bedroom beside her foster mom. She is house-trained, crate-trained, and is good with kids and dogs. Unknown about cats, but she doesn't seem interested in the squirrels in the yard. Mia deserves a good home that will appreciate her laid back, undemanding style. She is a loyal, loving companion. Location: Dallas, TX
Posted Breed: Weimaraner (short coat). Gus is a handsome, gray Weimaraner with the most soulful eyes you'll ever see. This sweet boy had a rough life before coming into rescue and needs a routine, therapeutic environment to learn how to trust again. He already knows how to love, and will give it generously once you have gained his trust. The way Gus shows his fear is that he runs...he can be quite the escape artist. This can be remedied by taking him outside on a leash to do his business and then bringing him back inside. If you have a secure yard, Gus has learned how to use a doggy door, but he has been known to dig out, so it would need to be very secure. When spoken to, Gus will wag his little nub tail to let you know how much he is soaking in the attention. He is also a big fan of belly rubs. Gus will need another dog in his new home to show him how to trust and learn the ropes of living in a household. Gus's ideal family will be patient and gentle, and willing to overcome his fears and challenges, and with this sweet boy the rewards will be great. For more information about Gus, please fill out an application on our website.

I love all people, especially kids. I get along well with other dogs, but need a slow introduction. I would do best in a home with another dog to help keep me company and give me confidence. I am house trained and even taught myself how to use a doggy door. I don't like the crate, so I prefer to only be in it for short periods of time.
