My name's Bubba, and I'm looking for my forever home. I'm a medium-energy lovebug with the all the right stuff (and all the right fluff) to make you the perfect companion. I'm a sensitive guy, so it usually takes me a few minutes to open up, but be patient with me and you'll see just how happy we could be together! I'm at Georgia Avenue waiting for you.Contact: District of Columbia Animal Care and Control Facility & New York Avenue Adoption Center(Operated for the District of Columbia Dept of Health by the Washington Humane Society) 1201 New York Avenue, NEWashington, DC 20002202-576-6664

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Akita. Adoption Fee: $300.00. Ms Sassy and her companion,Bear, came to us as the by product of a divorce. Bear found his home, but Sassy is still looking. One of our longtime adopters looking for a companion for their male dog sent us this write up: Sassy seems receptive to Kansei (their dog) and fell all over herself to be with my husband . She was good with me as well. She is as sweet and friendly w/people as the day is long. You can tell she doesn’t have any menace in her at all. She was probably a great mom. Things to consider with her are that she is EXTREMELY skittish. Out of her known environment (house, run, backyard), she is scared of motion (cars, wind blowing leaves, bicyclists) and noises (cars, Bill said storms too). They say she’s improving, but this would need a lot more work. I don’t know if she’ll ever be that dog that merrily goes on outings. She is a homebody, but she would need conscious socializing to build up her confidence. She’s lost some weight, but could stand to lose another 5+ pounds. Bill and Lynn and doing great there. She has no leash manners and isn’t even sure some of the time how to deal with the leash, Bill and Lynn are working on that too. She was pretty good on lead w/Cuff, but needed some coaxing when scary things went by (cars, wind, etc). She will definitely be fine w/obedience training one day. She is not very food motivated. 3-16-2018 Sassy has shown no aggression whatsoever. All she really wants is to be in the house with the people. If cats run, she would probably chase them, she chases rabbits in the yard as all dogs do. She is a very sweet dog and reminds me of Nyla. All she really wants is a place where she’s safe and cared for. My guess is that she’d be fine with cats. I think that Sassy will be thrilled to have another dog to play with. She played with the other Akita’s at the kennel, although she tended to pounce on them. Sassy is coming along nicely. She's walking on lead very well, as long as nothing scares her. She's lost a good deal of weight but is also finally eating her dog food. She also will now do anything for a milk bone. She is still skittish and won't do stairs. Non the less, we've given her run of the house now with no issues.

Posted Breed: Akita. Adoption Fee: $300.00. Icey and her companion were left at the shelter when one of her owners needed surgery. She was stressed out at first, but they were able to handle her within 24 hours. Both are currently being boarded at this time. Here is what the kennel owner says about her: Icy Spicy; Very sweet, loves to snuggle and get petted. Very patient for brushing and bathing, but does not like her nails trimmed. Listens well and knows some basic commands, walks ok on the slip lead with minimal pulling. Loves to play and sometimes can get jumpy when the playing gets exciting. Came in with Spartacus. They are not housed together, but can play in the yard together. She will need a home with some experience in large, dominant breeds. Written for Icy by her foster home: ISO: A forever home. My name is Isis (aka Icey Spicy). Even though they call me Icey… I’m very warm and loving. I bond quickly to my person and love to get cuddles and give kisses. I’m 72 lbs. of love. I’m a pretty smart girl and know commands and respond well to most of them. Sit, down and come are my favorites and I do know “off” and “leave it”, but need to hear them a couple of times before I respond. I have lots of energy and love to run around in the yard and play fetch. I’ll bound up and down the stairs. I can get overly excited sometimes and it takes a few minutes for me to calm down. I do like my toys but don’t destroy them. My foster mom only gives me two at a time as I leave them lying around everywhere. I like to collect things, so if I see a dish towel hanging off the counter or a glove or sock laying around, I’m going to get them. I’m not food possessive and will sit before my food is placed down. I like my crate and go in willingly. Don’t leave me home without putting me in the crate as I don’t like being alone can act out. I’m a great protector of my home. I’ll bark when the doorbell rings or even if someone pulls into the driveway. I’ll always let you know when you get a delivery. My biggest challenge right now if pulling on leash… I’m so excited to be outside, I do pull, but I’m getting a little better each day when I wear my “freedom harness” …. My foster mom is being patient and working to get me to be a good girl on leash. I’m not too sure about other dogs. I get very enthusiastic when I see other dogs, but haven’t had any intros yet. I will bark and pull especially when they bark and pull back. I’ll need work on dog introductions. OH and did I say, I’m looking for my forever home.

Posted Breed: Akita / Mixed. Adoption Fee: $350.00. This is Fat. He came from Louisiana. He belonged to his recent owner's mom. Rather than turn him into a shelter when mom was gone, this nice lady brought him back when she moved to the NoVa area and was going to try to keep him. This lady had never owned a dog in her life, nor was she a dog person. She called rescue to see if we could help. I went out to meet him and was totally charmed by the personable, little guy. I offered some suggestions which the new owner followed through. She had him neutered and updated on shots. The family was working with him and there was someone home most of the day. But then everyone got a job or was at school. With no fenced in yard, he was tied out when they were home or kept in the sunroom. With all the best intentons in the world, things just were not working out for him and the family. The lady called us back and said they just could not keep him, so Armac agreed to take him. Fat needs some training in leashwalking, which is happening. His tail curls and drapes over his back when he is walking/happy. He goes in the crate if you throw a treat in. He lived with a small dog and children as an outside dog. He has not shown any aggression to the resident dogs, but was a bit too predatory toward the kitties. He is adjusting and we will keep you updated

She supposedly lived with children. She has been okay with the kids in the neighborhood but not really interested. She mostly ignores the household kitties. She has had no training, no boundaries. We are working on that. She is very food motivated, very sweet, and has walked well with one of our males. She has not been loose in the yard with him. She met another Akita and seemed interested in him, but not in a bad way. She is currently being walked on a halti. Once she does her business and settes into her walks, she does fairly well on lead. She loves her toys and is not generally destructive with them. Athrna is afraid of fireworks

Posted Breed: Akita. Adoption Fee: $300.00. Bruno and his companion, Eva, were taken on a humane hold by animal control when neighbors complained they had no food, water or shelter. The owners signed them over to AC. Bruno seems to be quite good with people when they have visited him. Bruno would be best as an only pet in a home with no small children !! Bruno is now in a foster home. Here is their comments about him. First a couple of "health" comments: He's eating well now. At the kennel he had a tendency toward runny eyes; this seems to have resolved. We've noticed some stiffness when he's been lying still for a while - stiffness when he begins to stand, and sometimes a limp for a few minutes. This goes away once he's up and moving, and he does not seem to be in pain but wondering if he has some hip/joint discomfort. Overall - adjustments to the household - both dogs and people - continue. We've made no attempt to introduce Zoe and Bruno, and our house set up makes keeping them separate pretty easy. Bruno enjoys his "house time", and loves attention, but is perfectly willing to curl up and chill if the house is quiet. He tends to put himself to bed fairly early - he'll go into his kennel and curl up on his blanket usually between 8 & 8:30. However, he is awake and ready to go out around 5:00 a.m. -- and he is not quiet about it! We are trying to make a point of engaging him later in the evening in the hopes he'll sleep a little later in the morning. He is quite curious, and at this point has few boundaries with respect to "people things". He loves soft things (plush blankets and throws, hats, yarn . . . ) and will wander off with them given the opportunity. I have discovered that he can open my "yarn box" - he's learned to flip the lid - so I now know that I have to put that up out of reach! He does not chew on furniture, which is a good thing. He listens to "no", so it is not difficult to get him to leave something alone. I am watching Jodi's "toy" reviews on Facebook with some interest, as he totally destroys plush toys in a matter of minutes. We don't like to leave things in his kennel that he might destroy and then choke on, but would be interested in ideas for "safe" chew toys to leave with him during the day, as he really must be kenneled when we are gone during the day. Both dogs have been loving it this week because Stephen has been on vacation and has been home all week! He does not seem to much like stairs - he'll go down into the basement sometimes (he has a blanket down there too), but needs to be encouraged to come back up. He has not gone up the stairs to the 2nd floor from the kitchen. Other comments: He is affectionate and seems to like people; when there were too many people in the living room on Christmas Eve he wandered over to the door and let it be known that he'd rather be outside. He is not terribly vocal - he doesn't bark much (except first thing in the morning when he wants to go out!) - he will bark when a delivery truck comes up the drive. He typically does not bark when someone he knows enters the house (he now knows all the "regulars") -- very unlike Zoe! Some observations on the "other dog" awareness: As noted above, we have not made any attempt to introduce the dogs. They are both clearly aware that the other one is here. Bruno is pretty disinterested - doesn't tend to pay much attention if he can hear Zoe in the next room. When he first got here, Zoe would whine at the door if Bruno was in the house - that has become much less frequent. She has actually been very gracious - she does not bark or fuss when it is Bruno's house time. She is getting much better at self-distracting; on the few instances where Bruno has been in his yard and Zoe has been out on her run, she will go out to the end and look. She has not been barking at him, and will quickly wander back up on to the porch. If she does seem to be staring, she is very easy to distract with a verbal "come back", but tends to self-distract more often than not. Have to admit that we don't have this particular situation very often, so it may not mean a whole lot yet. With the holidays and the cold we haven't gotten out. We will be taking him to a local "dog wash" fairly soon, and will get him out for a walk off the farm so we can see how he does. I would like to do some obedience training with him, but don't want to start a class in January - will research the options further on that. We do basic obedience work with him in the house, but I do want to see how he does in a "class" setting with other dogs (and I like obedience work!)

Posted Breed: Akita. Adoption Fee: $300.00. Foster home write-up: If I am remembering correctly, part of the reason she was surrendered was aggression towards other animals. On our walk today there was a Golden across the street that was doing some posturing as we were passing. She got a little excited, but it was definitely more of the, "I want to play" rather than "I want to go fight". During her house time tonight, I let her see E.V. and Trey through the closed (and locked) sliding door and she did not show any aggression towards them and a dog aggressive dog would have at least done something towards E.V. (another female and the top dog.) There is one thing that is hard for me to judge and it goes back to Chino (Kiko actually reminds me a little of him). Chino did fantastic with people that took charge and let him follow them, but did not do well with people that were timid around him and more or less made him take the lead. Because of that experience with Chino, I would probably recommend placing Kiko with owners who are going to be in charge and let her just be the dog. Also, just so that you know, Lori really likes her and she seems to like Lori as well. Lori can walk by her crate and there has not been any aggressive body language. The three of us have been taking walks in the afternoon and other than trying to get Kiko to understand how to walk with the stroller so that she is not run into, we have not had any issues. Kiko is full of energy, so we have not let Lori and her play together just due to the fact that Kiko would knock her down and being swatted by a paw would hurt. I would probably not recommend that she be placed with a novice owner with young kids because I am not sure if that would be a good mix, but experienced owners with young kids might work (again, it all depends on the owners.) Kiko is a very sweet dog and hopefully her shyness will dissipate with time, but the worse-case scenario is that she is shy with new people and loves on her family which is not a terrible situation.

Hi, my name is Niko and I’m a 7 year old Akita who weighs around 95 lbs. Let me tell you a little about myself. I can be the biggest couch potato who loves to hang out with my foster family, but I also enjoy taking long walks. My foster mom walks me for 40 minutes every day and if she tries to cut it short, I’ll stop and let her know we aren’t done yet. I have very good manners inside the house. While I do well with the other resident dogs in my foster home, I would really prefer to be the only dog. I like older children who are dog savvy and know how to give me my space when I need it. You’re probably wondering where I came from. Freedom Farm rescued me 5 years ago when I ended up at a Ft. Campbell shelter. In my first foster home, I was the only dog and I loved all the attention. Shortly after I was rescued, the 2010 flood happened. My foster mom was so scared because her house had started to flood. So she grabbed me and my leash and we headed to higher ground. Luckily, some nice people were out in boats helping families and they picked us up and took us to safety. After that, I did have to go into boarding for a little while. That’s when a family saw me and took me home. Sadly, I was recently returned to Freedom Farm because I wasn’t used to having a baby around. Overall, I’m in pretty good health for my age. I do have thyroid medicine that I take every day and I’m taking glucosamine to help with my arthritis. I’m a sweet boy who loves to meet new people. Do you have a spot on your couch for me?Niko is located in Nashville Tennesee. Contact Kim at akitas2love@gmail.com for more information
