Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Shar Pei / Mixed (short coat). PRINCESS HAS GOOD NEWS! HER ADOPTION FEE HAS BEEN 100% SPONSORED BY A FAN OF HERS! THAT MEANS HER FEE IS $0 TO A QUALIFIED APPLICANT. "My ideal home has no other animals and my people have lots of time to spend with me!" Princess has been patiently waiting for her forever castle. Moats are optional, although Princess does enjoy a refreshing swim once in a while (go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ua2Ee3TKkzI). A patch of grass would be a welcome addition. At 70 lbs., Princess appreciates a good back scratching roll. Princess has the impeccable manners you would expect from a royal. She responds to basic commands, walks nicely on lead and looks good in a tiara. Not surprisingly, Princess is a tennis fan. She would rather watch it on the tube with you than sit in the Royal Box at Wimbledon. She is learning the ins and outs of baseball and American football. Give her a spot on the sofa and her own bowl of popcorn and Princess will follow your favorite sports all season long. Princess is affectionate and devoted to her humans. She is happy to accompany you on a stroll or spend the afternoon lazing about the house. Princess makes few demands on her humans but she does insist on being the only furkid in the home. If you can commit to keeping only one furkid in your castle, come adopt this very loving and affectionate Princess! Since Princess’s estimated birthdate is 12/2/2008. If you want to know more about Princess and to speak to an Adoption Counselor, please complete an application at https://furkids.org/dog-adoptions/application. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix

      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Grayson is a great little dog who chooses his friends carefully, but once a friend you’re a friend for life! Grayson is living in a foster home and here’s what his foster mom told us: “Grayson is housetrained in my home and is very smart. He goes into his crate when I say, ‘in the crate’ and gets in his cushy bed when I say, ‘go lay down.’ He knows ‘do you want a cookie,’ and will run to his cushy and wait patiently to get his snack. If he is closer to his crate, sometimes he will go into his crate. If he wants a cookie before he’s asked, he’ll walk up to where the snacks are kept, then walk up to me, then walk back to the snacks. He also understands ‘time to eat’ and will get in his crate (I put his food bowl in the crate for him – he feels safer eating in his crate). “Grayson gets along with my personal dog and is sweet, but I have to watch his body language. When I get home, he is real excited and comes up and wants petting. He even gives kisses on my face. At other times, he will take a few steps back and look at me. That is when I know that he’d rather not be petted. If petting is forced on him, he will growl and lunge. His adopter will just have to accept that he wants petting and loving on his condition and at his ‘invitation’. Sometimes when I say ‘good boy, Grayson’ a few times he will come up for petting. If he growls and acts up, I tell him to go lay down and he’ll head to his cushy growling the whole way. “Grayson has trust issues, so he needs a dog-savy female (he does not like men), who will be patient with him. If you adopt Grayson, you will adopt a friend for life!” Since Grayson's estimated birthdate is 3/19/2011, his adoption fee is $275 [senior citizens (age 62 and older) and military personnel receive a 15% discount on adoption fees]. If you want to know more about Grayson and to speak to an Adoption Counselor, please complete an application at https://furkids.org/dog-adoptions/application. If you adopt me, our trainer will teach you how to help me learn that I don't need to guard things.” Annabell Barbie was once lost but found herself at Furkids' shelter where she became one of the shelter staff's favorite dogs. Her efforts to please and be noticed got her a free ride to one of our wonderful foster homes. After a few days with her foster family, we received a report that Annabell Barbie is very sweet, playful, curious and happy. She plays with great delight and vigor, but settles down pretty quickly. Annabell Barbie loves to be with her two-legged friends and will give you the joy of having a companion forever. She does not particularly like to be crated, but is well-behaved in the crate. I love to run and play and then find my mom or dad to give them kisses, and then I'm off to play with my toys, a doggie friend, chew on a bone, or roll around in my bed. "I have learned that bathroom time is for outdoors and my meals are taken indoors. I have been learning not to pull on my leash when I walk, I also walk very nicely with other dogs. I'm a young guy with lots of energy, so my foster mom thinks a backyard is ideal for me. I like most other dogs and love to wrestle and sleep up tight next to them. Each morning I wake up with a smile, I sit for my treats on command and am grateful for all the loving care you can provide. Caine, f/k/a...

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). WE HAVE EXCITING NEWS ABOUT CAINE! HIS ADOPTION FEE HAS BEEN REDUCED TO $0 TO A QUALIFIED ADOPTER. Caine, f/k/a Van Morrison, is a show stopper! With his gorgeous fawn coat, athletic build and serious countenance, he can even look a bit intimidating, but Caine is actually a very loving and very loyal dog. Caine came to Furkids at eight weeks old, the runt of a litter of eight starving puppies. You can read all about the puppies' rescue at https://furkids.org/blog/ archives/03/2014 (Caine is the only fawn-colored puppy in the litter). Caine has been raised in two loving households. The first was a home where he was a constant companion to a young girl. He adored the girl and spent many nights hosting sleepovers and dress up parties with her friends. Caine was off to a great start with his new family but ironically the love and coddling he received backfired and landed him back in Furkids’ shelter. We had hoped that the love and affection that Caine received would help him to develop into a balanced and happy member of the family. Unfortunately, Caine's devotion to his family quickly grew into a more protective behavior. They enlisted a trainer and tried to be the leaders that Caine needed them to be, but that didn't happen. Caine's second home was a perfect one -- all adults and no other pets. Caine came to love his new family and they loved him deeply, too. In fact, when it became known that a baby would join the family, they made sure that Caine went through intensive training to ensure that he would accept the baby. Unfortunately, Caine is one of those dogs that cannot be in a home with young children or other pets. As much as they are sad to see him go, we are confident that we can find Caine the type of home that best suits him, especially since he is in all other respects the perfect dog. He is extremely loyal, intelligent, obedient and a sucker for love. Caine is crate-trained and house broken. He loves to play ball and go for walks/runs on a leash, but he is not a high energy dog. He can be very chill and lounge all day and watch TV with you on the couch. He is well-trained and knows these commands: down, touch, go to your bed, rollover, paw and when you tell him to sit, he will remain sitting until you tell him to "go". Caine does get nervous in new situations and when meeting new people, but once he gets to know his surroundings and the new person, he is fine. Caine’s latest home got him trained at U.S. Canine, whose services last the lifetime of the dog. This means that all continued training and assistance needed with Caine is already covered by U.S. Canine. U.S. Canine will meet with new owners and help them get acquainted with what it takes to “be the leader of your pack,” because that is the type of home Caine needs - someone to trust and guide him. Caine's estimated birthdate is 4/18/2014 and his adoption fee is $175. If you want to know more about Caine and to speak to an Adoption Counselor, please complete an application at https://furkids.org/dog-adoptions/application. Must be at least 21 years of age to apply. (If the dog you're interested in meeting is living in a foster home, the Adoption Counselor will make an appointment for you to meet the dog at the shelter.)

Well it should be because it’s what I’m best at (other than being cuddled in your lap). And treats! I’m great at taking all of those you want to give me, too!
