More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      rescue
      Breed: Saint Bernard
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Saint Bernard. Moonbeam is such a lover! This sweet girl just craves attention. She was one of 13 dogs removed from a humane site in Huntingdon County PA after the Judge awarded custody to ODAAT. We are recommending older children. She has no idea she is a big dog. She rides well in the car and leash training is coming along nicely. We do not think cats would work either as she is reactive to squirrels etc. She is reactive to other dogs and we feel she would do better as an only dog. She deserves to be spoiled and pampered. She is a lover! She does give slobbery kisses. :) Applications are available on our website www.onedogatatime.us.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Bubbles was reported as an injured dog running the streets of Harrisburg. She was found tied to a front porch with no shelter, food or water in 16 degree weather. With a quick knock on the door, the owner surrendered Bubbles . She is approximately a year and a half old. Possible german shepherd lab mix. She is such a sweet baby that had a rough start in life. We were told she was hit by a car almost a year ago. She had a severely injured leg. The owner stated she took her to the vet and they told her that she needed surgery. The owner could not afford vet care. So her leg injury was left untreated. She had no idea what treats or toys were when she came to us. She has been doing wonderful in her foster home. She loves to give kisses. She does not chew anything up in the house nor has she even scratched at a door. She's a sweetheart. She is very affectionate and just wants to be loved. We took her to the vets where xrays were done. Bubbles has lived in pain daily for the past year. He said had the leg been treated when the initial injury happened, the knee popped out of socket, it would have been an easy fix. However, at this point, she had no elbow left, the bones were misaligned and all her muscles were like a rock. We made the decision to amputate the leg and although it may seem traumatic, this girl has bounced back and has taken on a whole new life. She is so full of energy and lives her days free of pain and sadness. Do not let her handicap scare you away...she is very active and can run with the best of them!! Bubbles is 2yrs old. Full of love and energy. She is super sweet. No cats,no small children and fenced in yard preferred. Do not let her being a tripod fool you. She is strong and fast! Breed: German Shepherd Dog
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). WELCOME MARVIN!! A staff favorite, Josh Coble picked this boy up from the shelter yesterday. Marvin is GSD thru and thru. He will need a breed savvy owner, and trust us... you won't be disappointed! Imagine... your dad takes you for a car ride... you get out and think your going to have some fun. Just hours later you are in a cold kennel and everyone around you speaks a different language. :( This poor boy's family was spanish. They had him his entire life. He lived with c hildren and other dogs. They had to move and could no longer keep him so they dropped him off at the shelter. I mean... just imagine! Can you feel his fear? Apprehension? Devastation? Shepherds in general do not do well in a kennel environment. They LOVE hard and are extremely dedicated to their people or person. So many full blooded dogs, shepherds included, die daily in shelters throughout our country for ALL the reasons we love them so much. Their loyalty. Marvin is 4 years old, does well with other dogs if introduced correctly. He would probably do best with older respectful children. Unsure of cats. He LOVES the water!! He likes to play fetch, get belly rubs, does well in the car and just basically wants to be with you. If this handsome, majestic fellow sounds like your boy, please submit an application thru our website www.onedogatatime.us.

His owner passed away and he was with her for days before anyone found them. He came in super confused and hungry. He is like the other pups at the temp kennel, lonely and wanting affection and attention. His tail wags and he play bows. He is good with kids, but would suggest older, respectful children, as he lived with just his mom. No cats. He is a 4 year old, American bulldog/terrier/boxer mix. He does great with most dogs. He has become one of our dog testers. :) This guy needs a foster or adopter. If you are interested in this boy, please submit an adoption application thru our website www.onedogatatime.us.

      Breed: Great Dane-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Baby
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Black Labrador Retriever / Great Dane / Mixed (short coat). Wyatt is paralyzed from the waist back. He has severe nerve damage to the left front leg. He only has the use of his left front leg to navigae. Soooo... the time has come to say good bye and to let go. We have got to make room for the others who will surely need us. We are searching for the BEST family ever for our boy, Wyatt. He will need a very special family. Someone who is committed to making sure his physical, as well as emotional needs are met. Daily care of Wyatt is to express his bladder and bowels. Bladder every 4 hours, so he does not get a uti that could ultimately kill him. Bowels so there is less mess, although he can express them on his own. His emotional health will require he be socialized with people and other dogs. He loves to go for walks at the park and meet new people. He has only ever met one dog he did not care for. That pup growled and lunged at him first. He is good with cats, kids and dogs. He does get frustrated when there is too much activity for a prolonged period of time, because he is only able to be the bystander. He should be in some sort of therapy and a rehab facility that allows dogs to swim, close to your home would be ideal. He does leak urine, but requires a carpeted surface to get around on. He cannot move through the home without it. A larger living area is a must. He is currently being fostered in a small 3 bedroom home and it is often times hard for him to navigate the doorways. We LOVE this boy! Our lives and rescue stopped for him. We want him to live life to the fullest, and with as busy as our rescue is, it makes it hard on us to attend the many events that are needed to keep us afloat. This boy is heavy, at almost 90 lbs. He requires baths frequently to make sure he doesn't get urine scald. His caretaking is not an easy task. He is spoiled. He LOVES squeaky toys and the toys that have the crinkle sound. These are important to keep him mentally stimulated also. If you are interested in making Wyatt a member of your family, please fill out an application on our website www.onedogatatime.us. Please be patient with us. We are an all volunteer rescue and it is summer, so we are spread very thin at the moment. Please Share To see Wyatt's journey thru ODAAT search # WeareWyattsWarriors

      Breed: Saint Bernard
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Saint Bernard (long coat). Fred is a very sweet love bug. He assumes he is small enough to be picked up and snuggled. Fred will need work on manners and not forcing himself onto people. He has amazing leash manners. He is non reactive to most dogs, small dogs he is NOT good with. He would do well in a home with a female who is as laid back as he is. He shows no signs of food or possession aggression. He will more than likely want to lay on couch or bed. Fred is the most “slobbery” of the group. He shouldn’t need too much help housebreaking. If he fits into your family... please submit an application thru our website  www.onedogatatime.us.  We would LOVE nothing more than see him in his forever home!
