Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). This little spit fire was happy to meet us! She was saved from a rural shelter literally at the 11th hour and is certainly grateful for her second chance! She enjoyed her walk, but could use some work on the leash. However, she is housebroken and crate trained, and super smart. This pretty girl needs to be an only dog, but don't let that deter you...she is certainly all the dog you'll ever need. Could you be the lucky one to share your life with this beauty? If you are interested in adopting Roxie, please fill out an application today!

More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Marge

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Hound (short coat). Marge is a beautifully shy hound dog that was rescued after her "owner" (that didn't even give her a name) dumped her at the shelter when he was done breeding her. She has been with her foster family for several months as she was heartworm positive and had to undergo treatment. Marge LOVES eating and hanging out in her crate, other dogs, and taking her morning walks. She is still very shy and unsure with people, but she wants to trust and she will eventually get there. Marge needs someone that will be gentle, patient, and not have any expectations of her. In turn she is low maintenance and a companion to other dogs. Marge simply needs a chance to know and experience love. If you are interested in adopting Marge, please fill out an application today!

      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier. Location: Gloucester, VA This lovely lady has been with us since May of 2017 and had been with a partner shelter briefly before that. Poor Zoe was found all alone, abandoned in a house, and left to fend for herself. While this is enough to break even the strongest of dogs, Zoe never lost her love of life and can't wait to start the next chapter of her story. Zoe is a very clever girl who would like an owner as smart as her to teach her more tricks and put her to work. If you enjoy having just one dog and training them, we think you'll be very impressed with this young lady! She has a ton of potential to learn and the drive to match. She would not enjoy living with young children, or cats, as she likes a quieter space, and she would LOVE to have a place where she can safely spend some time outdoors taking it all in. Please come meet her as soon as possible! Contact us today at sheltermanager@gmhumanesociety.org or (804) 693-5520! Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society 6620 Jackson Ln Gloucester, VA 23061

He was recently re-assessed and we discovered that he can live with a female dog! He loves to play with toys (and is personally one of my favorites). Brutus does pull on the least, but think that will dissipate once he gets proper exercise. He is such a great dog who loves to give kisses. Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier. Location: Charlottesville, VA Lady Bumblebee is a 2-year old, Mountain Cur/Pit Bull mix. She's spayed, fully vaccinated (DAPP, Bordetella, Rabies,) dewormed and heartworm negative. This beautiful girl has a special soul. She is a complete sweetheart with nothing but love and kisses to give. Lady Bumblebee bonds to people very quickly, especially those that she sees on a daily basis. She's very playful and loves to bring you her toys. She's a perfect sized dog for even an apartment and is completely crate-trained and housebroken. Lady Bumblebee can be nervous with some new people, but it doesn't take long before she becomes your shadow. She still exhibits puppy mouthiness when excited but she has learned to take verbal commands very well. Lady Bumblebee isn't interested in sharing her home with other dogs because she falls so deeply in love with her person, that the attention must stay on her. She just wants to be held, loved and in your presence at all times. Lady Bumblebee is currently an office dog at the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA, so if you're interested in learning more about her, please email her foster mom at hsullivan@caspca.org or (434) 973-5959. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Meet ROCKY! This handsome boy is sure to make you smile every day with his silliness, his wiggle butt and his soulful, warm eyes! He just turned 4 so he’s in the prime of his life! He’s housebroken, listens well and has good house manners except for the occasional counter surf! He has lived with other dogs and prefers non-confrontational dogs for his friends. He has lived with kids from toddler to teenager, but because he’s a solid boy and still acts like a puppy at times older kids would probably best. He loves showing off and will often dance around and jump for treats. He does prefer a cat free home. His favorite things are rolling up in blankets, car rides, belly rubs, giving kisses, long walks and just being close to you. Oh and toys, he loves playing with toys, especially ones that squeak! This sweet, funny boy is ready for a new beginning with a loving family to call his own! If you are interested in adopting Rocky, please fill out an application today!

      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Sweet Boofus is a 3 year big boy lab X. He is about 75lbs. Boofus has had a really rough go at life until Ring Dog Rescue brought him in. Prior to rescue he has spent his entire life tied to a tree in a small pen. Once Boofus joined us he had to go through heartworm treatment. Boofus recently finished his treatment and his crate rest. So now Boofus is trying really hard to learn leash manners and basic obedience. He is slowly being introduced to his four legged house mates and is doing well playing with his female pit bull friend. He doesn't read doggie language very well so his friend Lana is helping out and showing him the way. Boofus still has a way to go to get him use to being a companion and learn how Awesome it can be to be a inside dog. Boofus will need a patient and active family. If you are interested in adopting Boofus, please fill out an application today!

She was adopted from a rural shelter where she got away from her adopter on the first day she was adopted and spent the next 9 months on the lam! She was finally caught and brought back to the shelter where an RDR volunteer could not bear to leave her there. Rosie has adjusted fabulously to living life on the inside! She loves the couch (can you tell?), her crate, and her foster family (human and canine). She is housebroken and a very quiet girl. She would do best in a calm quiet home that will allow her to bloom into her full potential without a specific timeline and a lot of expectations. In return she promises to love you unconditionally...a win win! If you are interested in Rosie, complete an application today!

      Breed: American Bulldog
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Bulldog. Louie is perhaps the sweetest dog you'll ever encounter. He loves all people, including children. He also loves to sleep in the bed, if you let him, and appreciates the occasional cheeseburger or chicken fingers from his favorite drive thru. Louie seems to think he's a cat and would gladly curl up in your lap, if you let him. Boarding with other dogs has really helped him socially. He had a girlfriend in boarding that was adopted, leaving Louie lonely for love again. As long as his adopters take it slow and supervise initially, Louie would quite enjoy a compatible dog companion. But, no cats please. Life as an only dog would be quite fine with Louie too; he would be happy to absorb all of the attention. Whomever gets this fine fellow will experience the great love of a wonderful companion. Louie is the best buddy anyone could ask for and begs you to consider picking him, as he so deserves a life in a loving home after patiently boarding so long. See all my videos at: http://bit.ly/Adopt-Louie This adoptable is not a Doggie Harmony animal, but a courtesy listing on behalf of the kind person who rescued and cares for this animal until it can find a forever home. There will likely be a fee to reimburse for the cost of its vetting/care; it will vary by rescuer/animal. Additionally, this rescuer will ask you to complete an application and allow a home visit to ensure pet is a good fit for your home/lifestyle. If you would like to proceed with the application, please click here and fill out our Adoption Application.
