Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). We are courtesy posting Lucy for another rescue in the hopes she will find a home soon. Lucy is always looked over. There is nothing flashy about her but this girl will make someone an awesome companion. She certainly loves to please you. Lucy is maybe 3 years old and is probably around 40 lbs. She is an excellent size. Lucy is probably lab and pittie and she is sweet. She was rescued from the Lorain County Dog Kennel. If interested in Lucy, please contact Vera @ 440-775-4101 or Peggy @ 440-984-7014.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      THOR-ONE OF ...

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: German Shepherd Dog-Husky Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Husky / German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (medium coat). Thor has always been classified as special needs and maybe he still is somewhat but not nearly as much as the precious boy we took in in Jan. 2017. He has made remarkable progress and a dental surgery he recently had to remove a piece of metal embedded in his mouth had to be causing him tremendous pain. Thor is approximately 5-7 years old and weighs about 58 lbs. He is mostly Husky/Shepherd mix. He had a very sad beginning to life and was rescued out of a hoarding situation. He will need a very special person who can understand what he has been through to adopt him. He is currently on medication for an imbalance in his brain causing anxiety. This is a very inexpensive medicine. He is doing wonderful on the meds and our hope is that someday he may not need them at all. Thor is partially blind in his right eye probably caused by some trauma in his early life. He is up to date on all vaccines, neutered and heartworm tested negative. He is also housetrained and crate trained. Thor loves to go for walks or hikes in the woods, the longer the better. He also enjoys laying around chewing on toys or bones. He is not a "Velcro" dog or lap dog and can be very aloof at times. It does take a little time for Thor to warm up to a new person. He MUST have a home with a secure fenced in yard and access to a safe place inside the home whether it is a crate or something else. He does well crated while his person works at the present time but in a home without other dogs, he probably could have free roam of the house. He would do best in a home with no children or other pets. He does currently live with two other dogs but his dog interaction skills are not the best. If interested in Thor, please e-mail hartmanshounds@gmail.com or call Peggy @ 440-452-1619. For more background and up to date information, please visit his facebook page, "Thor's Voyage".

      PEBBLES

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Australian Shepherd-Beagle Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Beagle / Australian Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Pebbles just arrived into our rescue today, 4/14/18. She came to us from a shelter who felt she would do better with a rescue group in a home so she could learn more socialization. She was turned into there by her people because the other dog in the home did not like her, they had her since she was young. Pebbles is now about 10 months old and currently weighs 38 lbs. She probably will not get any bigger. She looks to be a mix of Beagle and possibly Australian Shepherd? Pebbles is full vetted, all vaccines are up to date, heartworm tested negative and she has been spayed. She is not quite ready for adoption until she gets over some of her fears and learns about the big world. She is spending some time with a trainer to help her in this area. Pebbles gets along fine with other dogs, somewhat interested in cats but we don't believe there is any aggression. She has not yet been around kids but they should probably be a little older, maybe 12 and up. If interested in Pebbles, please e-mail hartmanshounds@gmail.com or call Peggy @ 440-452-1619.

      ROCKY - PEND...

      rescue
Breed: Basset Hound-Treeing Walker Coonhound Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound / Basset Hound / Mixed (short coat). Rocky is a 1-2 year old Treeing Walker Coonhound mix. He weighs around 52 lbs and is at a good weight. He was rescued from a dog shelter in southern OH. Rocky was so shy that they asked for help where he could be in a foster home. Rocky had gone to their prison program and was trained by the inmates and really learned his stuff but still was remaining very shy. He is crate trained and knows his basic commands. Rocky is also housetrained and rides great in the car. He gets along great with dogs but should not go to a home with any cats. We believe he will be excellent with respectful children. Rocky would love a home with a child or two to keep him busy and a secure fenced in yard. The fenced in yard is a must for him and we would like an adopter to be an active person who will walk him daily and maybe do some hiking. Rocky is an excellent boy and is really well behaved but he is not a couch potato. If exercised properly, he will relax and nap with the best of them. If interested in Rocky, please e-mail hartmanshounds@gmail.com or call Peggy @ 440-452-1619.

      PRECIOUS

      rescue
      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Precious is a courtesy post for us. Her caregivers are moving soon and realize it will be hard to find a place with her. They have had her since she was about 3 months old. Precious is currently 4 years old and about 50 lbs. She is spayed and up to date on all of her vaccines. She is a very well mannered girl, is housetrained and is said to mingle well with other dogs. She has been around children 8 years old and up. We do not know about cats. She is an all around great dog who needs a loving home. If interested in Precious, please e-mail hartmanshounds@gmail.com or call Peggy @ 440-452-1619.

      BIDDY

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: American Bulldog-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Bulldog / Mixed (short coat). Biddy is a sweet girl who ended up at a kill shelter after her family decided they no longer had time to care for her. She is an American Bulldog mix and is about 5 years old. Biddy is spayed and up to date on her vaccines. She has been heartworm tested negative. Biddy is gentle and friendly. She is housebroken and great with kids, she has no bad habits. She is a little weary of other dogs at first until she gets used to them and should probably not go to a home with cats or other small animals as she does want to chase squirrels in the backyard of her foster home. Biddy loves looking out the window and is a rather laid back girl. She likes to play with toys and loves playing in the snow. Even though Biddy does not appear to be a runner we would prefer she has a fenced in yard. She does have a touch of osteoarthritis so we tend to keep her walks on the shorter side but she does enjoy them. If interested in Biddy, please call Ali @ 440-865-9357 or e-mail hartmanshounds@gmail.com.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Oscar is a sad product of divorce. He was given up when his people divorced. Oscar is a very laid back guy and is move in ready. He is on the quiet side and is content to relax on the couch. Oscar would be perfect for someone looking for a low energy dog. He has all of his house manners, which includes being housetrained and did live with two other dogs. Senior dogs are just so easy, they walk in and know exactly what to do. If interested in Oscar, please e-mail hartmanshounds@gmail.com or call Vera @ 440-775-4101 or Peggy @ 440-452-1619.
