Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). "Upper Peninsula Animal Wefare Shelter" (formerly Marquette County Humane Society) Duke likes to be the leader and is quite intelligent, independent, confident and clever. He prefers making his own decisions but will listen to you if you make a good case. He longs to be partners in any adventure. Treat Duke like one and you'll both live happily ever after. Duke is super smart and knows many commands such as sit, lay, shake, roll over, high-five. He gets along with some dogs over others (submissive medium size dogs tend to be best) so bring your dog along for a meet and greet. He will not be placed with cats or small animals. Duke longs for a new owner who will continue to work with him with positive methods - Duke has so much potential for the right person or family. He would thrive as an only pet ideally, with a person or family who is willing to continue him training and take him on some adventures. Duke has been fully sponsored for his adoption fee by U.P. General Contracting. Fully paid rate. WEBSITE: www.upaws.org

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier (short coat). "Upper Peninsula Animal Wefare Shelter" (formerly Marquette County Humane Society) Home 2 Home Program Available Pet: My name is Leo! I am a little slow to know people because I am deaf. Because of this, my mom has been teaching me American sign language, which I am learning very well. Although I am deaf, I love when people talk to me! Because of my hearing loss, I don't really enjoy busy kids or puppies as they are hard to keep track of. My mom has a bed for me upstairs and downstairs, but I would rather spend my time cuddling with her. I would like to live in a home with other dog friends because when I go to my Grandma's, she has two quiet dogs that I play with. I am very curious and love to follow the dogs and people around to see what they are up to. I love dog toys, and I love them so much sometimes I shred them! Don't worry, I don't eat the stuffing or small parts! I love to cuddle and go for long walks around the town, along with the beach year around. While on my hikes, I have a collar that vibrates to tell me it's time to go back to my people. I want a person that's home more and continue to help me learn commands in sign language! Rehoming fee is $50.00 and will come with his vibrating collar. Leo is not currently at UPAWS, he is being rehomed through our Home2Home program! If you have more questions or would like to hear more about Leo, please contact his owner April by email at apog12@gmail.com or 906-250-0335. WEBSITE: www.upaws.org

Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed (short coat). "Upper Peninsula Animal Wefare Shelter" (formerly Marquette County Humane Society) Are you looking for a dog with superior focus? How about one who is smart enough to learn any puzzle you put in front of him? Are you a bit of a homebody and rather walk a back 40 than on a busy road? If you answered "yes" to these questions, we've got just the dog for you! Meet Austin, a 2 and 1/2 year old Plott hound mix. He's a great dog who just simply prefers someone who will devote and spend a lot of time with him. He can be a active guy who is so smart, he can even get out of wire crate. He just needs an avenue to keep his mind and body busy. Austin has a lot of love to give; he just can't contain himself, he blurts with joy. He has lived with children, other dogs and got along well. He can not live with cats or small animals however. Austin isn't for everyone but is you you're looking for a running, hiking, or agility partner, he is SO your man. Of course anyone, Austin has a quirk or two...well mostly just one. Anything with wheels drives is way too much for Austin to handle. Austin has been known to bananas when he sees moving vehicles, and he is quite sure he prefers a home where he doesn't have to see many of those. Though he can ride in the car without incident, it certainly isn't his favorite thing - did we mention he is a homebody?! Austin does well walking once he settles in, and he would love endless romps through fields and woods - he just is not a car guy! So this does mean that Austin's new family should have access to an area or place where they can walk him that isn't a frequently travelled road. The country life is best for this fellow. So, overall, if you're looking for a fun dog who will learn endless tricks, puzzles, games, and be a sweet and wonderful pal, look no further than Austin. If you have a place where he can run and play without encountering many moving cars, this sweet, sensitive boy may just be for you! Pet Adoption Sponsorship from a Austin fan. Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Black Labrador Retriever (short coat). "Upper Peninsula Animal Wefare Shelter" (formerly Marquette County Humane Society) Hello! My name is Buddy, pleased to meet you! I'm about ten years old and a Black Lab and if I don't say so myself, I am awesome! I have to be...UPAWS saved me! You see, I have a severe weight problem, and I wasn't doing very well at all. When I arrived at UPAWS on February 1st, I weighed nearly 180 pounds. Thank goodness for UPAWS. They took me in with open arms and told me not to worry that they would help me. I couldn't stand up without help, and I had to walk on carpets to move. It took all I could to walk a few feet. UPAWS consulted the veterinarian and recommended that I am to eat appropriate dog food (I was used to table scraps my whole life). This dog food was hard to get used to, I was 'hangry' a lot, but I am used to it know and I like it. It is special food, and it sure has helped! As of March 29th, I have lost 25 pounds! I feel SO MUCH better! I can move around, and I can even go for shorts walks without having to lie down and rest. Heck, I even climbed four steps!! So I'm on my way to a trim, healthy bod! Woof! Now a little more about me. I am a funny guy, and I LOVE deeply and have favorite peoples that I have met recently. The first one I luv is this goofy lady at UPAWS named Ann! She's funny and talks funny to me, and she lets me get away with stuff - can you say SPOILED! Woof!! I luv her (even though I heard she's a 'cat-lady'...what??) But really, I like all the UPAWS staff so much...heck, I love them all! Second I LUV my foster family! Oh gosh, I sure do. They have a terrific and large, comfy home. Plus, I have a doggy pal there that I think is great, and a big family with older kids...they are all so COOL! I enjoy going out on their deck and laying in the snow when it is sunny. I am grateful for them. They have helped me a lot. They are kind and loving to me...they're the best! I like squeaky toys A LOT! A real lot...they are fun. And I like to keep them close to me...especially my Kong squeaky tennis ball. I get a bit "salty" when people try to take them from me! Heck, they are mine!! So little kids wouldn't be the best. I like little kids but not if they try to take my stuff away when I'm not ready. I can be stubborn, but I'm just teasing when I am. I LOVE my belly rubbed, and love to be brushed and I love my moist toilette baths too. Heck, I love life - the glass is half full now for me now with my rose colored glasses on. Well, I am now ready for a forever home. I have to remain on my vet diet and keep up my walks and healthy ways. I'm a really good boy, and I know I will make you a loyal and loving buddy...get it, Buddy! Ha! Ha! Oh, also, cuz I'm so special, I am the Deb's Dog of the Month! Yes, what an honor that is. The Deb's Dog Program will sponsor a large bag of my specialty diet food and two vet health check-ups. And they are helping advertise me on Facebook. Wow, I AM special! Call UPAWS at 906-475-6661 or email info@uaws.org to inquire about me. I have been sponsored by Gary Kughn for my adoption fee! Cool hey! Now my fee is fully paid! Woof! Woof! And big slobby kisses, Love, Buddy UPAWS would like to thank Hill's Science Diet rep Scott Kaczmarek for donating Buddy's metabolic/mobility food while he is under UPAWS care. WEBSITE: www.upaws.org

"Upper Peninsula Animal Wefare Shelter" (formerly Marquette County Humane Society) Yahtzee would do well in a home with kind patient people who can give him the time he needs to become the loving companion he seems to want to be. He's definitely smart and we think would really enjoy learning more as long as it's done with force free positive reinforcement training. If you would like to know more about this fella, please call UPAWS to inquire. (906)475-6661 as Yahtzee is in foster care. Yahtzee's adoption fee is sponsored $60.
