Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). "Upper Peninsula Animal Wefare Shelter" (formerly Marquette County Humane Society) Duke likes to be the leader and is quite intelligent, independent, confident and clever. He prefers making his own decisions but will listen to you if you make a good case. He longs to be partners in any adventure. Treat Duke like one and you'll both live happily ever after. Duke is super smart and knows many commands such as sit, lay, shake, roll over, high-five. He gets along with some dogs over others (submissive medium size dogs tend to be best) so bring your dog along for a meet and greet. He will not be placed with cats or small animals. Duke longs for a new owner who will continue to work with him with positive methods - Duke has so much potential for the right person or family. He would thrive as an only pet ideally, with a person or family who is willing to continue him training and take him on some adventures. Duke has been fully sponsored for his adoption fee by U.P. General Contracting. Fully paid rate. WEBSITE: www.upaws.org

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). "Upper Peninsula Animal Wefare Shelter" (formerly Marquette County Humane Society) Arya is a very energetic dog. She loves to play fetch and run. She is a very loyal girl, but is skeptical of new people and other dogs at first, but generally warms up to them shortly after an appropriate meet. she requires daily exercise, which means she would be best suited with a very active family, and probably one without kids until she calms down a bit. She is in need of some quality training, as her attention span is short, and she tends to have a mind of her own. If you are looking for a sweet dog, with a big personality, that you can train how you want, consider meeting Arya today! Arya is in our Home2Home program, so you can contact her owner Lucas via email at luchristnmu.edu, or give him a call at 906-360-5853. WEBSITE: .upaws

      Louie

      Breed: Brittany
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Brittany (medium coat). "Upper Peninsula Animal Wefare Shelter" (formerly Marquette County Humane Society) Louie is a 1 year old, neutered male purebred Brittany Spaniel. He is a very active puppy who needs a home where he can RUN (not just walk) a lot!! If he doesn't get enough exercise, he will take to chewing on your things! He will be an indoor house dog only, living outside is not an option for him. He sure loves his people and cuddles with me all night every night. Louie likes to give hugs and kisses and he will curl up on your lap like a cat. He is still learning his manners, so kids over 10 years old would be ideal. He is crate trained and is used to being crated for up to four hours a day. Louie loves to play with other dogs, but he does chase cats. He loves playing with squeakie toys and chewing on deer antlers. He has done well on his e-collar and responds to "Louie, here!", therefore, I ask you keep his name as he knows it well and I have used it in his training. He loves learning new things, so a home that is willing to extend his training of tricks and manners would be great. He's not a big fan of wet paws or the cold weather, so I got him a vest to wear for the cold days when he shivers and he really enjoys it. Louie is pretty decent with his potty habits, but still has an accident from time to time in the house. After a big family change (resulting in me being the only adult), I simply cannot give him the running exercise he needs. I want him to have the chance to have a better home than I can provide and if I cannot find him a better home, he will stay with me. I love him very dearly-- he's my baby boy. If anything were to ever not work with his new home, I would take him back. He is currently eating Purina One Smartblends chicken & rice and he currently receives 1 cup 3x a day. I can include his crate, blanket, bowns, leash, vet & AKC paperwork, and favorite toys. If you think you can give my Louie a better life and the exercise he requires, please feel free to contact me, and I am located in Ishpeming. His rehoming fee is $250. Louie is not at UPAWS, he is being privately rehomed through our Home2Home program. If you think you would be a good fit or have any questions about him, you can reach Rachel at 952-486-0680 or by email at rlshellumgmail WEBSITE: .upaws

Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound (short coat). "Upper Peninsula Animal Wefare Shelter" (formerly Marquette County Humane Society) Hello, Hawk my name. Nice to meet you! I'm 5 years old and I worked hard all my life. Now I would like to live my best-ager-years more relaxed. Even though I'm a Treeing Walker Coonhound I am more on the chill side and pretty quiet. I love a good hike, but even more do I like my ears rubbed, my chest rubbed and a butt scratch. Heck, all cuddles are highly appreciated! I bet I would also love relaxing on the couch with you. I'm ok with other dogs and don't seem to mind cats, so bring your dog for a butt sniff. Maybe we'll become best friends forever! Come to UPAWS and meet me! WEBSITE: .upaws

Nahla is a gorgeous and striking dog. And there's such a loyalty there - such a desire to find someone and look after them and devote herself entirely to them. She would be a faithful companion to the extreme! Born in 2012, she likes to play, run, and have lots of fun. She's a terrific, easy leash walker, and has so much fun on hikes and play dates. Nahla is recommended for older respectful kids, and have a meet and greet with your doggy. She just needs that little extra time to get used to her new family. She is looking for someone to snuggle with and go on car rides down the country road, with the scent of Fall flouting through the open windows. In closing, Nahla is a staff favorite - we all adore this happy, sweet girl. And Nahla adores us! Come out to meet this little love and see why she is our favorite! Location: USA
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). "Upper Peninsula Animal Wefare Shelter" (formerly Marquette County Humane Society) We are heartbroken. Nico has been our best buddy for the last 3 years, and although we love him very much, we feel that it is best for our family to find him a new loving home. He is showing signs of anxiety around our baby, especially as she is finding her voice and starting to move. He has done okay with her so far, but will do best in a home without other pets or young children, and with an owner who can continue to work on his behavior. We would prefer to find him an experienced dog owner. Nico is hilarious, athletic, loving, snuggly, and sometimes full of mischief. He needs exercise and consistent training to be on his best behavior. He is still not great with other dogs (besides ones he knows), but has improved significantly with training and the familiarity of routine. We have worked with Sue Kapla of Canine Consultants, who has helped us tremendously, and we are willing to connect Nico's new owners with Sue to continue his training. Nico is not currently at UPAWS, he is being rehomed through our Home2Home program! If you are interested in hearing more about Nico please contact Matt by email at thomemdcomcast or by phone at (906)-281-5373. Nico has a rehoming fee of $100. WEBSITE: .upaws
