Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). "Upper Peninsula Animal Wefare Shelter" (formerly Marquette County Humane Society) Duke likes to be the leader and is quite intelligent, independent, confident and clever. He prefers making his own decisions but will listen to you if you make a good case. He longs to be partners in any adventure. Treat Duke like one and you'll both live happily ever after. Duke is super smart and knows many commands such as sit, lay, shake, roll over, high-five. He gets along with some dogs over others (submissive medium size dogs tend to be best) so bring your dog along for a meet and greet. He will not be placed with cats or small animals. Duke longs for a new owner who will continue to work with him with positive methods - Duke has so much potential for the right person or family. He would thrive as an only pet ideally, with a person or family who is willing to continue him training and take him on some adventures. Duke has been fully sponsored for his adoption fee by U.P. General Contracting. Fully paid rate. WEBSITE: www.upaws.org

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). "Upper Peninsula Animal Wefare Shelter" (formerly Marquette County Humane Society) About Riley If your looking for a great dog come meet Riley. Once he gets to know you (he likes to take it slow), Riley is super fun, loves his walks and is pretty good on his leash. He is affectionate and very handsome. He would make a great dog for an active person. And if you have a dog, well, Riley would love that! He appears to like most all dogs he meets. Not many people look ...at him because he doesn't show well in his kennel, he has a hard time not getting excited, jumping and barking. That doesn't mean Riley is a bad dog, it actually usually means that he just can't stand being in his shelter kennel! He wants to meet and greet and be outside enjoying being outside. Please give this dog a chance, don't judge him because he's barks sometimes in his kennel. Riley is a great dog! WEBSITE: .upaws

Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). "Upper Peninsula Animal Wefare Shelter" (formerly Marquette County Humane Society) Hello there! My name is Moo Moo, I am 8 months old and a girl. I am looking for someone to be my whole world! I love my people, and I bond very closely with the people I care most about. I will be up and ready for most any type of adventure! From hiking in the woods, jogging the bike path, playing in the yard to chasing a ball, I am is ready to go, plus I will be your faithful buddy all the way! I can be somewhat nervous sometimes with fast little kids, so older respectful kids are OK. I previously lived with a dog, so please bring dog to meet me. I do like to chase cats - so I probably shouldn't live with cats. Smart and eager to learn, I will work hard to please my people pals. If your home could use a happy, lovable, and very loyal friend, please, consider adopting me! Woof! Woof! ~ Moo Moo WEBSITE: .upaws

      Breed: Husky-Unknown Mix

      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Husky / Mixed (short coat). "Upper Peninsula Animal Wefare Shelter" (formerly Marquette County Humane Society) About Odie Odie started out a very anxious dog with little understanding of basic commands. We got an e-collar and over time he has completely turned around. He is very loyal and is quick to learn new commands, understanding come, sit, stay, and go lie down. He loves being petted and snuggles and will also play fetch! In the woods and on trails, Odie stays with you and comes when called. He gets along really well with other dogs and loves our black lab, Marty, and they love to play and chase each other! When he approaches other dogs, he is very friendly, and like many husky types, he likes to talk. Overall, Odie has never shown any aggressive behavior toward dogs or people. Odie will need some time to get used to his new family and we think a home with older kids would be ideal. Our daughter is 9 years old and there's constant traffic in our house with kids coming and going. This has seemed to make Odie anxious at times. Odie's ideal situation would be in a setting with a lot of land to run. Fenced in would be good, especially with a minimum of a 6-foot fence as he has jumped our fence a few times. The owner of Odie will need to be active as well. He would also make an ideal sled dog! When we have run him in town, he moves straight as an arrow with a comfortable gate and obeys commands. Daily exercise is a must with Odie. Odie is currently in a foster situation in Marquette. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions! His rehoming fee is $100. Odie is not currently at UPAWS, he is being rehomed through his owner with our Home2Home program! If you have any questions about Odie, or you think he would be fit with you or family, please contact Natasha by phone 231-590-9423, or email at kossnatashagmail WEBSITE: .upaws

Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). "Upper Peninsula Animal Wefare Shelter" (formerly Marquette County Humane Society) Arya is a very energetic dog. She loves to play fetch and run. She is a very loyal girl, but is skeptical of new people and other dogs at first, but generally warms up to them shortly after an appropriate meet. she requires daily exercise, which means she would be best suited with a very active family, and probably one without kids until she calms down a bit. She is in need of some quality training, as her attention span is short, and she tends to have a mind of her own. If you are looking for a sweet dog, with a big personality, that you can train how you want, consider meeting Arya today! Arya is in our Home2Home program, so you can contact her owner Lucas via email at luchristnmu.edu, or give him a call at 906-360-5853. WEBSITE: .upaws
