Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed. Hi friends! My name is Abe (aka Abraham aka Baberham Lincoln aka Snufflupagus because my foster parents say I make a silly snorting sound when I get a good smell). I am around 1-2 years old and I am ready to find my forever home. My foster parents tell me I am the handsomest boy they have ever met and people keep commenting on my beautiful eyes. I am doing great on a leash and love walking with my foster dog sister. She is faster than me but I can keep up with her when I am not stopping to pick up sticks along the way or smelling all the amazing smells of the world. I am happy to go for walks around the neighborhood and my foster family is introducing me to “city life;” there are still scary noises and I am increasing my stamina with every walk, but I am a brave boy who just needs some reassurance and a firm, consistent, confident family to keep me growing in the right direction. I love to chew and oh boy am I good at it! I need things made for extra strong chewers. I like my Kong bone, elk antler and Benebones in different shapes. I am a pretty low key guy most of the time and will happily give my belly for rubs before I snuggle in with you. But remember, I am still young and a strong boy who needs to work on my manners when I get the zoomies or what my foster parents call “pibble nibbles” (but my nibbles are always gentle). I am looking for a forever family to help me remember my manners and be consistent so I feel comfortable not having to express myself in those crazy ways sometimes! I like other dogs a lot! All of my interactions with other dogs while at my foster family’s house have been positive (even when the other dogs didn’t like me, which I know is hard to believe). I would love a home where I can have a doggy brother or sister or the chance to play with other dogs. I keep trying to get my foster dog sister to play with me but she would rather sniff around for rabbits. I do my bathroom business outside and I am learning to let my foster family know when I need to go. While we are working on communicating (which is hard when they don't speak dog), they are taking me out regularly and giving me lots of treats for doing my business. I go almost as soon as I get outside so we can get back to relaxing and snuggling. I sleep nicely in my crate each night in my foster parents’ room. I go to bed when they do and don't get up until they wake up. Lucky for me, they aren't too lazy because I am ready for snuggles and pets when they get up; my tail whaps off my crate bars and you know I’m up. If you wanted to let me into your bed, I would not mind in the slightest and would snuggle you better than any dog! It took me no time to love my foster family, especially my foster mom, so while I am sure I will miss them at first, I know I will quickly fall in love with my forever family. My new family needs to be patient with me as I get comfortable in my new surroundings. I get sad being all alone in my crate but a nice lady from Paws Across Pittsburgh taught my foster family lots of things to help me feel more confident being alone and they are ready to teach my forever family all the cool things I am learning. For example, I am learning to go sit nicely in my crate when they say “crate” and stay inside until they say “free.” I also will need a heavy duty crate for when I need to be left alone. My foster parents can show you what it looks like. I am spending more time each day in my crate by myself though. Having my dog foster sister around helps too. My foster family is helping me by going about their daily routines while I hang out in my crate, making it easier for me to not be stressed when they leave. I am what my foster mom calls a velcro dog, we are also working on understanding what personal space is LOL. I will continue to need help with this while I get comfortable in a new place so I would probably prefer to have at least one person in my new pack working from home or at home most of the day. I also am nice to everyone who wants to pet me (which is basically everyone because I am so handsome). I am gentle with people young and old but since I am still young myself and get the zoomies sometimes, I might be better in a house without small children. Otherwise, my human parents need to keep a close eye on me for clues that I am super excited and understand that when I see kids playing, I really want to join in but also forget how big I am. If you give me time and have patience and are consistent with me while I learn, I promise I will be the bestest boy and love you forever!
