Posted Breed: Basset Hound (short coat). Are you looking for a brand new best friend that is fluffy in all the right places? You've come to the right place. Meet Fred. You might call him Fat Fred in the beginning, but get to know this guy and you'll be calling him Freddy the Teddy. Oh yeah... he's good! His hair is also a touch fluffier than normal, only adding to Fine Freddy's endearing qualities. And his smaller frame would make him the perfect lap dog. Fred might have had a bit of bad luck before being rescued, having his owner pass away, but he's a treat jar half-full kind of hound and ready for the next chapter in his life. He's possibly the shortest shadow you'll ever have, as Fred likes to be nearby, he doesn't want to get left behind again, and who can blame him? Perhaps Fred is an international traveler and speaks multiple languages... we don't know... but currently the English versions of "sit' and "stay" ain't really scratching him where he itches, if you know what I mean. He does however speak "treat", so show him one of them and you've got this MENSA card toting hound's full attention. Fred would also love to take a walk with you and does well on a leash. Freddy seems to have a soft spot for the ladies and the kids and some of the softest fur you've ever felt. He might pull the slow basset stroll most of the time, but when it's called for, Fred can turn on the speed. Once settled in, he'd likely do best as an only dog and should be a great addition to any family. Ask for Fred. 06/09/15 To apply online or to see other available basset hounds, go to www.cbhr.com.

More About Basset Hound Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Basset Hound (short coat). Hi, it’s been awhile since I’ve updated my story. I’m now 11 years old. The first 6 years of my life I was used as a basset puppy making machine. My vet said I probably didn’t miss a heat cycle having babies. I was rescued by CBHR and had my very last litter. I was adopted and had a great home for 5 years but my Mom got sick and had to return me to CBHR care. For the past 2 years I’ve been in my same foster home where I get so much love and care. You see I do keep a strict daily routine of potty break time , breakfast and supper and sunning in the yard if the weather is nice. I used to enjoy walks with my foster Mom but now I can’t walk as often or as far. My vet said I have bad arthritis throughout my spine and hips which causes me stiffness and pain. I also get urinary tract infections. Foster mom brushes my teeth to try and save the teeth I have left. I don’t like that much. I feel special because CBHR volunteers have designated me “a forever foster”. This means I will stay with my foster Mom who knows me best and not be adopted. I currently take 4 medications everyday to help keep my pain level down and keep me more mobile. I’ll be on these medications for the rest of my life with changes if needed as my condition changes. I usually don’t mind taking my medicine because it comes wrapped in yummy cheese. My medication is expensive and is refilled monthly but it keeps me mobile and helps me be the best I can be at this stage of my life. If you would like to donate to CBHR to help pay for some of my maintenance medications, I know the volunteers would appreciate it so much. Posted Breed: Basset Hound (medium coat). I am soooo glad that you are checking back because I have much to tell you about since I last updated by CBHR resume. I am happy to report that I am much improved and ready for my forever home. My foster mom will tell you that I am a really sweet girl. She tells everyone I am “smart as a whip” and can learn all kinds of new things with a little instruction. In fact, she says show me twice and I have it down. I prefer to be inside, but will play outside if you play with me. Otherwise, I will just lie around being cute, and gently encourage my humans to rub my belly. Another thing that my foster mom says about me is that I like a schedule! I am up on time, like to eat on time, and like to be on time for my appointments. My only issue, like many girls, is that I have a history of urinary tract infections. Those are now a thing of the past as long as I eat special urinary-sensitive food, some limited treats, have enough water…. and absolutely no table food. If I need to go out, I will surely bark to let you know. You can count on it! So, if you are looking for a happy, playful girl who also likes to just hang out with people… I am just the hound you have been looking for. My bags are packed. I love to take walks with my foster mom any time she will go and I would even like to run with someone who jogs! I am a very spunky Basset Hound! I LOVE humans and I will immediately roll over for a belly rub any chance I can get! I do well with other dogs and cats but I am not fond of them getting in ‘my space’ so I would probably do best as an only dog. If you are looking for a low key basset hound that can be a couch potato when you want to relax but also play and go for walks… then I’m your guy! If you are interested in meeting me or hearing more, please contact CBHR and fill out an application. My bags are packed and I’m ready for my very own forever home! I have been on the mend with my foster parents, but hope to be ready for a forever home in the very near future. As I have had more time with good care, my energy levels and personality have come right back. I am a good all around mature gal and can get around just fine. I like people, other dogs, and am good in my crate if I need to be there on occasion while my humans are out. I will even use a doggie door! I might need a little TLC and patience from time to time, but promise to repay you with lots of affection and tail wagging. I can be a little vocal (I'm a lady with something to say) and I might be better as an only hound because I'm worthy of your FULL attention! Being a basset I have an excellent voice and could probably sing just as well as Johnny though. I’m so happy the good people at CBHR have taken me into their loving care and my foster family has given me a place to crash for now. They are taking excellent care of me and I am really appreciative of their love and affection. I’m an older, wiser gentleman with a few aches and pains, but I have plenty of energy for a fun life. I am good with people and animals, and make friends easily. I love to hang out and travel with my foster dad when he’s working. After a hard day of being cute and lovable I like to curl up under my blanket on the sofa. Life is good, but could be better if you would consider giving me a forever home. Posted Breed: Basset Hound (short coat). Chloe is all done with her heart worm treatment, getting her teeth all clean and shined up, and is officially ready to begin the search for her new best friend! 11/29/16 Hello basset hound admirers, I am Chloe, or you can call me Mooney, my foster mom likes that name too, and I'm so happy that I was scooped up by CBHR recently. Life for the past year and a half or so, prior to being rescued I was mostly kept in a crate. My parents divorced and then my dad became ill and could no longer care for me - yada yada yada - here I am. Foster mom describes me as a petite 47 pound basset of a certain age. But despite the actual number (11ish), I’m a lively golden girl with a sweet and sunny disposition. More importantly, I am cute as a button – just take a look at these photos. I do have a little hitch in my giddy-up when it comes to my hind legs, but that's only an issue when going up stairs. I can do it, but to be realistic, I need a home with very few stairs. Once inside or outside, I'm good to go. I'm sweet and mellow and I do like things a certain way. I'm currently bumping noses and getting along famously with my foster brother, it just took a little time to adjust. We mostly ignore each other, but I yearn for the attention of my humans. I now know happiness again and my tail wagging proves it. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that I prefer a home with no small children, just a hunch. I like to ignore my foster brother Buster and that works out just fine for both of us. I am eating well, I’m potty-trained, don't chew or climb on the furniture, and there’s no counter surfing - those crazy days are over. I am usually wagging my tail and will lay by the door waiting for my foster mom to come home and I love to lay on one side and foster bro Buster on the other when she is working at her desk. My heartworm treatment is just about over, and I'm almost be ready to start my brand new life with you as my bestest friend. Foster mom says she loves me so much I can stay as long as it takes to find just the right home. Just give me a chance. I promise you won’t regret it. – Chloe 09/25/16 Carolina Basset Hound Rescue adopts primarily in North and South Carolina. Posted Breed: Basset Hound (short coat). Lucky is lucky indeed. Blind and hearing impaired, his life was deemed unworthy by the high kill shelter where he ended up. Fortunately CBHR quickly scooped him up in their caring arms and he is now learning he is loved and valued. Despite his limitations, Lucky gets around well using his nose and sense of touch. He is able to navigate in and out of a doggie door and up and down a few steps. Though he enjoys exploring and isn’t afraid to get around on his own, he would not do well with a lot of steps (getting up is not a problem…getting down is another story). Lucky may be a bit testy and cautious around new people at first but once you have earned his trust, he loves to be loved and petted. He would not do well around younger children. He hasn’t been around cats but since they could easily avoid him, it shouldn’t be problematic. He is good around older dogs who give him space but might not like young or playful dogs. He enjoys short strolls outside but likes being inside most of the time. He doesn’t mind being in his crate and will stay in it all night with no problems. He is doing well with house training but could have an accident if he gets confused where he is and cannot get outside in time. Patience and routine are key with Lucky. Lucky needs eye drops twice a day to control pressure in his eyes. He is good about getting these as long as he can smell you and the drops. He seems to know they help him feel better so he usually doesn’t fight it. If you’re ready to give this deserving fellow a chance, call CBHR today. 05/10/16 Carolina Basset Hound Rescue adopts primarily in North and South Carolina.
