More About Basset Hound Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Basset Hound. Adoption Fee: $200. Cali’s my name and being sassy is my game. I’m a sweet girl who didn’t have the best start of life, but now I’m in a great rescue and they’re helping me get all better so I can find a new family to spoil me! I came to Basset Buddies hungry, skinny, and itchy. My foster mom gave me yummy meals, warm baths (which I didn’t like!), and a soft bed for me to sleep in. I had to stay by myself for a while because they said I had mange and was contagious, but I was sooooo happy when I was finally able to play with my foster friends. I really like them, and kitties too! I don’t like to go potty in the house, so my foster mom says I’m housebroken which I think is a good thing. I’m sweet, sassy, playful, and lazy all wrapped up into one little girl. I have a great personality, and I’m finally learning what it’s like to be an inside dog. I’ll let you know when I want something, do a little wiggle dance when I’m excited, and will follow you wherever you go because I just want to be around my people. If you’re looking for a sassy girl like me, apply to adopt today!

Gulliver is housebroken, can use a doggy door, and doesn't pull or tug on a leash. He gets along well with other dogs and seldom barks, but he does grunt. Posted Breed: Basset Hound. Adoption Fee: $200. Flopsy is paws down the sweetest soul you’ll ever meet! Years of neglect have not changed her beautiful spirit a bit. Flopsy was surrendered to Basset Buddies with her right eye bulging out of its socket and causing her pain. It was removed and healed well. Unfortunately an eye specialist later determined that the pressure in her left eye was building and also very painful for her. She was completely blind in it as well. The choice was made to also remove that eye so that Flopsy could experience life pain free. She has adjusted beautifully and has no issues getting around her foster home. She even goes up and down the stairs on her own! She absolutely loves people, especially children. She’s great with all dogs and cats. She can be trusted to free roam in the house when you leave and she's also fully potty trained! Flopsy is just a wonderfully sweet and easy dog. She’d love a family to snuggle with on the couch, give lots of kisses to and love unconditionally. If you’re worried about the special needs of a blind dog, please don’t be! There is nothing she can’t do. Please consider enriching your life immensely by adopting this wonderful soul.
