If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Schnauzer / Mixed. I'm Adaline (Adie, for short). I'm a svelte 7 lbs and about 3.5 years old. My name in February was "intake" at the Joshua shelter <sad>. I was left there with a few other dogs, through no fault of our own. Despite circumstances out of my control, I am a sweet-natured and loving little girl. I love to be held, and to sleep with my foster mom. She says I earned that honor by sleeping in the right direction - no butt in her face. She's also impressed with my potty skills. Even in the rain I run out to do my business. No worrying about raindrops or the condition of my hair. Every day is a bad hair day, thanks to my schnauzer or wirehaired terrier relatives. I get along with all the other dogs here, big and small, and they all like me too. I am calm and alert. No shaking. No hiding under furniture. No drama. I want to be part of the pack. I'm probably too small for younger kids, but I might be a great match for gentle tweens and teens, or a senior. I excel at lap sitting. If you think I'd fit into your family, please apply to love me forever. Foster: LyndaDFW -at - Gmail -dot- Com Application: http://bit.ly/2EwIO1k The adoption includes age appropriate vaccinations, worming, rabies vaccination, heartworm test (negative), spay, and microchip including registration.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever. ***ADOPTION EVENT @ PETCO 4001 W. GREENOAKS BLVD, ARLINGTON. SAT 7 APRIL FROM 11:30-230 ***COME MEET OUR ADOPTABLE DOGS*** Daniel, aka Handsome Dan and Danny Boy is a big, sweet, playful charmer of a Lab mix. He enjoys getting petted (his fur is SO soft!) and loves to play with humans and most other dogs. (He likes any dog who likes him.) Dan is a big boy – 80 pounds – with a heart to match. He's incredibly sweet, likes to give kisses, and is learning to "shake" when he reaches out with a paw. He's also very smart, and learning to "sit" on command with very little coaxing. If you watch carefully, you can almost see him figuring things out. While Danny is an adult, he is just over a year old. This means he's not growing any more, but he still retains the exuberance and playfulness of a puppy. His ideal situation would be in an active family with older kids rather than toddlers. (Because of his size – did we mention he's big? – Dan would not be a good match with very small children.) Dan is mostly housebroken and does well in a crate when his foster mom is out or can't supervise him. Basically, he's a happy, goofy, dog who needs a family to cuddle and play with. If you want to be his family, and see if he is a match for you please contact Liz at 214 616 6128 or you can fill the online application to be pre approved www.shelter2rescue.org The adoption includes age appropriate vaccinations, worming, rabies vaccination, heartworm test (negative), neuter, and microchip including registration.

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Corgi / Mixed. A sensitive girl like me ended up in a shelter. Horror. The rescue lady who saved me and called me "exquisite" after I'd been her house guest for a while. I didn't pee or poo in the house, didn't bark, went into my crate when asked, and rode well in her van. I had a bit of surgery on my hip. Femoral head osteotomy. A lot of networking people helped my rescuer find the best surgeon. My second foster home helped with my therapy. She had me kick to the front, kick to the back. Bend. Extend. Something about Radio City Music Hall. She called me a "rockette," but that wasn't my name either. Good as new. I keep up with the pack as we race around the pergola. Second foster mom called me "perfection." You probably guessed ... that's not my name. I start off very shy but when I get comfy .... I might nibble on your toes if I see them dangling off the bed. I'll back up and laugh, and wait to see if my human laughs too. If I want attention I'll open my mouth and gently take your arm with my teethsies. I'll look at you and laugh. I love toys, and I have interior and exterior redecorating talent. I may move my toys from the west side of the yard to the east. And I might exchange blanket-a for blanket-b. I tend to follow my foster siblings into their crates. Doesn't matter which one; I love to be next to the warm bodies I'm comfortable with. I get to stay in foster mom's office during the day because I don't make a peep. Things are looking good. Please consider making me a forever part of your family! PS - I'm "Cola" because I came in with a dog they called "Coka." This is the type of "crazy" that happens to animal control workers. Please be kind to them. www.shelter2rescue.org Foster mom: LyndaDFW@gmail.com ----------------------------- The adoption includes age appropriate vaccinations, worming, rabies vaccination, heartworm test (neg), spay, and microchip including registration.
