Posted Breed: Boston Terrier. Bianca is an 13 year old, 22 pound, beautiful red and white Boston terrier. She has diabetes that was not treated prior to CAWS rescuing her, which lead to glaucoma in both eyes. Unfortunately at different times each eye was removed. Despite having diabetes and both eyes removed, Bianca is very confident, independent, sassy and spunky. Pretty sure she knows her eyes are missing, but she does not let that hinder her. Her foster home has a dog door with a ramp. Bianca knows the layout and trucks in and out very successfully. Her diabetes is totally under control now. She eats a prescription dog food and gets an insulin shot after each meal. The bag of prescription dog food and vial of insulin lasts a couple months, so diabetes is not actually any more costly than any other illness. She gets along wonderfully with the other furkids in her home, after proper introductions of course. She needs to know who is in her pack so she feels safe. She is very close to another 18 year old diabetic in the home. She grooms and cuddles with him daily. She loves to be on the couch with her buddy or humans. Bianca will do a bark if she is lost so her humans can talk to her to find her way to them. Other than that she is not very vocal. She will talk to you with muffled growls to tell you how her day is going, or if you disturbed her sleep. She is just a little ham. She does try to play with her best friend as best she can. He is so gentle with her. If Bianca is standing in the middle of a room by herself, he will stand next to her so she is not alone. Bianca walks confidently with a harness on a leash. She just needs talked to so she can follow you, or alongside another 4 legged friend. She might be a little too curious with cats so not a good idea to go to a home with cats. Due to no eyes Bianca needs to go to a home with older children. She is able to navigate a few steps but not flights of stairs. A home check is required to be sure she could function safely in the home and yard. Bianca is crate trained but does have an occasional accident if left longer than she is used to. Bianca has many good years left. She would love to find her furever family and live happily ever after. Due to her diabetes she does need to be on a schedule. Adopting Bianca is definitely a commitment, not a decision to be made without weighing the pros and cons. But diabetes does not mean hours of extra time either, just an extra minute for the insulin shot, or to be taken to the vet for glucose checks periodically. Millions or billions of humans live with this dreaded disease. We have found our 4 legged furkids live just as well as the 2 legged people. If you are interested in adopting a CAWS pet, please fill out an online application at www.caws.org.

More About Boston Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler. Ozzie is a 73 lb. sweet gentleman who's easy going and easy to love. He's been through a lot of hardship in his life and is blind, but you won't find a nicer guy. He gets around his foster home with no problems at all and can navigate the four stairs going outside just fine. A long staircase would be a challenge for him to get down. He listens closely to his foster mom and comes to her voice. Sometimes he needs a little encouragement from her, and then he's on his way again. He's working on his crate-training but is perfectly house-trained and hasn't marked in his foster home at all. Ozzie wants nothing more than to be next to his human for snuggles and pats. He will curl up by your feet barely touching you so he knows you're there. He also walks well on a leash and loves to sniff the trees and add his mark to them. He gets along with his furry foster siblings though he would not do well with a high energy or reactive dog. Small children would also be too active for him. He needs a calm home with a routine to feel secure. Ozzie is waiting to learn what it's like to be truly loved and cherished by his forever family. All CAWS animals are fixed, microchipped, and vaccinated. His adoption fee is $150. Location: USA
Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Hello! My name is Lucian and I can best be described as a big love-able doofus! Don’t let me fool you though, as I am actually smart as whip, and can figure out any food puzzle in less than a minute. I’ve had to learn, because I was on “bed-rest” which is really tough for a doggie like me. You see, I came from Texas and people call me a Hurricane Harvey dog, which I think means I’m a pretty lucky dog. I was diagnosed with heart worm though, which is a parasite that infects my heart. Don’t worry I can’t spread it to humans, and only other dogs can get it if we are all bit by the same mosquito. But the good news is, I am finished with the treatment, and am cleared to go on hikes and runs! This is good, because I certainly gained a few pounds while I was being treated. One thing with my heartworm treatment though is that I MUST have heartworm preventative (such as Interceptor PLUS, etc.) every month. It is also good to have an up to date heart worm test every year and I may show up positive for a few more months on these tests, but that is normal. More about myself… I love humans, of ALL sizes. I do love kids too, and could definitely find my forever home with a family that has younger kids, as long as they know I might accidentally knock them over. I have shown no signs of aggression towards people at all. I do however have a fascination with small furry creatures. I really like to chase them and don't much like to share with them. So I will need a home with no other cats or dogs. My foster mom really hopes I find my forever home. She says I am a pretty perfect dog, and although I love her (almost too much), I know that her house is too small for me! She wants me to find my forever home so badly, and although I will miss her, I would like that as well! All CAWS animals are fixed, microchipped, and vaccinated. His adoption fee is $150. Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Saint Bernard / Mixed. Thumper is a big boy with an even bigger heart! Thumper is a 7 year old Saint Bernard/Lab who weighs 100 pounds. He is on a weight loss journey and has already lost nearly 50 pounds! He is getting around much better, but still has a few pounds to go. Thumper is a mellow boy who enjoys nothing more than a good nap on a soft bed. He enjoys a mellow walk around the neighborhood and then loves to share the couch with his people. He is a heavy shedder and will need to be brushed frequently to keep his lovely coat from becoming matted. Thumper is great with other dogs and has attended Deseret Dog Daycare. He has never been around cats and would prefer a home with older, respectful kids. He is house and crate trained, though he is trustworthy when left alone in the home. He loves his people and greets them everyday with a big smile and sometimes a youthful hopping with his front legs. Do you have a big enough bed for this big boy? All CAWS animals are fixed, microchipped, and vaccinated. His adoption fee is $150. Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Meet Mr. Bean, your typical, uncivilized (yet strangely charming), Royal Chihuahua! Bean is 5 years old and weighs 6 pounds. Bean is looking for a calm and quiet home with minimal to no traffic. He thinks other dogs (big and small) are quite the bother and would prefer to banish them from his existence. He is very much a ladies man and will go to the ends of the earth to protect his precious maiden. Once he has the preferred Bean-defined time to learn the love language of his person he is fiercely loyal! He asks this of his potential adopter- Do you have a quiet palace where he can reside undisturbed and peacefully? Will he be the ONLY apple of your eye? Due to his royal status he will require time to become comfortable with sharing space, will you have the patience? (Bean has likely been an only dog in his past home and has not had much if any socialization. He prefers women over men and does not enjoy other dogs. He will need a quiet place, with extra time to warm up and adjust, where there is minimal or no people traffic. No children and preferably someone who is home most of the day. He is a special dog who will need a special home. Would that happen to be you and your home?) Thank you for considering a rescue dog! *Dogs are not placed on a first come first serve basis. Posted Breed: Shepherd. Serby is an 18 year old 74 pound Carolina breed dog. His best friend recently passed so Serby ended up in a shelter. That’s how Mr. Serby ended up with CAWS. He is such a precious and sweet little big man. He gives the best gentle kisses. He gets along great with males and females, big and small. He learned the dog door from day one. Serby is on pain meds for his arthritis and will benefit from losing 10 pounds or so; we will work on that slow but sure. Serby doesn’t have any other health issues, his eyes and hearing seem to be okay too. Serby is house and crate trained, can be trusted to be left out in the house. Serby’s ideal forever home wouldn’t crate him at this time of his life. We took Serby to a swim orientation at Dog Mode for which he passed with flying colors! He doesn’t even have to wear a life vest. But he does have to have the Dog Mode Water Handler Dave in the pool with him in case his back legs give out. After passing his swim orientation we’ll see about setting up swim therapy sessions to further aid in his arthritic legs. Serby needs a home with no stairs or very minimal. He needs to be in a home with older children at this time of his life. A home with a fully fenced yard so he can just meander and take his time. Serby will be the best buddy you could ever ever ask for. He bonded with his foster mom really quick, so he'll idolize and cherish the person(s) who actually adopt him. This big little man just needs someone to follow around and lounge with, feed him, get him his meds and be sure he is able to get out for potty breaks. If you can provide this precious and unique soul a last forever place to hang his leash, please fill out an application and come meet him.
