Overview: | The Cypro Kukur is an ancient and rare dog breed originating in Kumaon area of India. Also known as Kumaon Mastiff, the dog has a history that goes back to some 300 years B.C. The dog is believed to have been brought in the area by Alexander when he invaded this region. Local people bred this dog as guard dog. The breed is now facing danger of extinction and a very small number of pure Cypro Kukur remain in the area of its origin. It is believed that larger number of this breed are present in Europe than its native country. Cypro kukur is a large dog with fairly lean, muscular, well-boned bodies. It has a large powerful head and a strong neck . The dog has a short, soft coat that always comes in brindle, ranging from dark to light shades. It may also have white markings. The average height of these dogs is 28 inches. Their appearance has been described to be similar to old Great Danes. This dog is NOT recognized by AKC or any other major kennel club. |

Character: | The Cypro Kukur is an aggressive dog breed that makes an excellent guard dog. Its aggressive nature helps it keep the intruders away and the home safe. The dog is obedient and friendly to its master and family and gets along well with children but it is unpredictable with strangers. It can not tolerate other dogs around it. The Cypro Kukur is renowned for his self-assured and protective temperament, unbelievable drive and enviable power, but he is notoriously prone to aggression. Therefore, early and consecutive socialization is absolutely imperative, and this breed is ill-suited for inexperienced or uninitiated people. |
Temperament: | The Cypro Kukur will get along with the children in the family, but is unpredictable with strangers. They don't do well with other dogs, particularly other dominant breeds or dogs of the same sex. |
Care: | The coat needs very little care. |
Training: | The Cypro Kukur needs training from a dominant owner. Only experienced dog owners should attempt to train this breed. Training from puppyhood is absolutely essential for this dog breed due to its aggressive nature. The dog should be trained to obey his master's commands. Harsh training methods may not work with this dog. The owner should establish himself as dog's confident and stable pack leader. |
